All the songs related to eggman in this game sounds this way, while songs related to sonic sounds way more magic and happy to show the difference between the characters and to make eggman look more imposing. Its a nice touch.
I don't think it has to do with Eggman necesarily but the song also means like you are almost at the end of the game, it gaves you the vibe that your quest is about to end.

It does look unfinished towards the end, the conveyor belts and what seems to be a zipline don't work at all. There are portions if scaffolding that the developers seemingly don't want you to see. The boss has no sound effects at all! Most of these were fixed in the 2013 remake, but it was probably still unfinished in the original. Maybe that's why they decided to make Flying Battery in S3, maybe they wanted a second shot at making an airship themed level.

Little tip for all if you hit that 1st cannoneer and do a hard jump press the propeller will shoot you straight up to skip that bugged platform spot in the beginning and if you do it to the T you will save about 20-30seconds at best. Also at the tail of the ship if you hit the speed boost and are going fast enough you can projectile right to the boss, completely skipping the cascading floors part too but it requires pixel perfect timing to one of the 3 floating rings to land on instantly hitting jump on impact then hard holding right iirc.

There /is/ actually 2 acts. Sky Chase is Act 1, and Wing Fortress is Act 2. Also, I remember realizing that you /can't/ fly under there, but also discovering a Tails-only shortcut that allowed me to circumvent that.

Even if I ever get good enough to do a no-hit run on any Sonic game at all, with my playing style, I could never get a no-hit on Sonic 2 because of the Wing Fortress boss. Those little spiked platforms, grrr!

it honestly depends on the obstacles. Some of the latest stages have easier obstacles than the earlier ones yet the earlier are somehow easier when you're not caring about getting hit.
You did just like WaddlerD did on his LP of Sonic 2 for this Special Stage and the other one: You created artificial difficulty for yourself during the part where bombs were coming down the middle of the track at set intervals. Jumping from left to right and vice versa instead of trying to walk through the spaces of the bombs is much easier, Wolfie. ;D
i remember, even at like age 10, being like: "this sounds like Indiana Jones Nazi music, and it's cool as fuck. Sorry, they may have been a monster party, but they had great style.
Out of interest is it true that it is possible to get a "Time over" during the transition scene after you beat the boss? Anybody on here ever had that happen to them?

Are we just going to ignore the fact that Right before Robotnik escaped Sonic clung on to his jet and was able to hold on the entire way there, not even slipping, even when it escaped earths gravitational field and made it into space, and the fact that this is a weaker and less experienced sonic makes it all the more impressive.
30 years later, just watching Wing Fortress Zone is still giving me anxiety

It seems Egg Fleet from Sonic Heroes was heavily based on this stage. The main difference in Egg Fleet is that you go on a lot more ships.

you dont have to jump as soon as the first platform opens, you can beat out the platforms much quicker by skipping platforms in between jumps.
