much wonder... why. Well, why don't you see and find out because here's
Metropolis Zone.
I had nightmares with this Metropolis Zone when I was a kid. It used to be such a hard game back in the day.
I played it on steam and only died 4 times, wing worthless is way harder
This and Winged Fortress always killed me when I was younger. And on the sega genesis no saves so game over literally meant game over and restarting from the beginning

Act 1: Metropolis zone? This should be easy. Act 2: Alright, gotta beat the boss later this act and I'll be finished. Act 2 (end): Where is he? Why is there a signpost? Eh, glitches. Act 3: WHAT?! THIS ONE HAS 3 ACTS?! NO OTHER ZONE IN THIS GAME HAS 3 ACTS! THIS IS MADNESS!

yeah, you can thank sonic team for scrapping a level that was supposed to be played after metropolis zone act 2, so since they didn't have time to implement another interesting level, they decided to make an act 3 for metropolis zone... dear god

@@Ozzman6662 I think sky chase and wing fortress is like the same zones with other names, i mean, sky chase would perfectly count as act 1 since it doesn't have a boss. You reach wing fortress and at the end you find a boss.

Act 1: Meh, Not Easy, But Passable,
Act 2: Mrgh, I Can Make It Through.
Act 3: Now I Can See Why This Was Going To Be Genocide City Zone.
Boss: Pure Suicide Worthy Level Of Difficulty.
You did a pretty good job on act 3.

Sonic 1: Labyrinth Zone
Sonic CD: Wacky Workbench Zone
Sonic 2: Metropolis Zone
Sonic 3: Carnival Night Zone
Sonic & Knuckles: Sandopolis Zone.
Idk why people think wacky workbench is hard. All my gameplay through that zone was expecting the part when you bounce endless amount of times, expecting... expecting... and, whoa, i reached the end, where was that part? Wait, i passed through it in like 10 seconds!
Why does sonic 3 even have one? The barrel of doom? That’s because people didn’t think it through
This level is the pure definition of pain
I have literally sat somewhere and started humming this beat, not remembering where it came from or remembering but not being sure which game or the name of the lvl. You’ve brought back a memory. ALSO I never knew you could super so I’ve in any lvl like this

The problem with this zone is the cheap level design and the enemies are almost hard to avoid. The moment a Slicer appears on screen they start shooting at you, meaning you must have skilled reflexes to avoid being hit. Another problem is you can barely tell which direction the Asteron’s spikes aim at, so you have to be SUPER careful. The Shellcrackers placements are pretty bad, but are pretty easy to avoid as long as you jump over them without taking damage.
I like the challenge that you call "cheap." I'm 50. I grew up during a time of truly challenging games, without as many cheats available. No internet to spoil the games. No loot boxes, no pay to win bs. Multiplayer was 2 or more people in the room with you. You saw their faces and expressions when they lost or won. The 80s through the mid 90s were the best times for gaming IMO. The 8 and 16-bit eras; the golden age of games.

Metropolis 3 is usually where I throw my hands up and say it’s not even fun any more with the ambushes and the melee attacks. I’ve had this since I was 11, I still can’t get past it. I lost my original Sega and games in a fire two years ago, trying to do it on a touchscreen is even worse.
Oh, you were going to hate the later levels after this one anyway.
This is why I want another Bluetooth controller. Nothing will equal the Genesis' controller D-Pad, though. SMH

I spend allot of time making levels in games and I study game design, to see what is fun and what isn’t, and I have to say... that this zone is just garbage, they didn’t decide to make it difficult in a fun or fair way, they do it in cheap ways that trick the player were they literally could not know that was going to be there, like seriously, having spikes just above were you can see them and have a spring that you have to jump on to progress, my instinct is ti take the first jump to observe everything around me so i know were to land next, so i jump on it and... face full of spikes, oh man so predictable, so fun, so fair. I liked this game when playing though around the first 5 worlds, “liked” is the key word.
for real. i love this game but this zone has some of the shittiest game design of all time, i dread it every time i play through the game
I liked when this player lost a life at the start of ACT two. You could see that they were playing pissed off. I also liked the section in ACT 3 where the player almost lost SS, just shows sometimes you just need to have patience.
Metropolis is actually a close representation of Scrap brain zone

I noticed something: Some of the Genesis instruments get cancelled out for a quick second. Why?
Limitations of the technology of the time. Some of the sound effects are loaded into the same channels as some of the layers, meaning when certain sound effects come up they drown (cancel) out a particular instrument for a few seconds at a time.
There's a guy on UA-cam who does a bunch of Sonic Music Theory videos who explains this way better than I. Check him out!
To add to this although I'm replying a few months later, the same thing happens on the SNES as well. It's particularly noticeable when you're playing games like Donkey Kong Country for example.
You can never see the enemies coming you just have to know they’re there
Honestly I just beat this level in my first try easily. I have no idea why it's considered hard. I was expecting labyrinth zone hardness from all the comments i heard. But this is starlight zone difficulty. I don't mean to sound like a bragger. I know I'm gonna get insults and stuff. But this level was super easy for me.

This is the only zone with three acts in sonic 2
The act 3 was supposed to be another zone
Van Halen Jump and this BGM for this zone are pretty similar. So they probably did a little remix of it for this level.
It was the most remembered zone i've ever played, and i didn't find it that hard.
I found it challenging, but I wouldn't say hard, either.

I legit beat the boss but a glitch happened and eggman kept exploding and it never stopped. I had to redo the level and now I'm stuck.

this was the only stage in sonic 2 with 3 stages so it was harder then the other stages before it. Wing fortress insanity then the last stage. The difficulty spikes.
