As a Nanny , years ago I had to do the Heimlich on a one year old. The mother stood looking helpless while I looked outwardly calm. I managed to clear her airway and get her breathing normally again. It was the single most terrifying incident in my 24 year career. When she was calm and breathing again I left her with her mother then hid in the bathroom to bawl my eyes out.

My 18mo. baby was choking on a french-fry (try not to judge). I noticed they weren't breathing starting to look a bit panicked. two fingers below the sternum and two quick presses later, they were breathing again and reaching for another fry.
      ah, kids.

I had that exact same experience when my next door neighbor came running to my house with her three-month-old. I actually was calm until it was over! Then I freaked out.

I had to Heimlich my kid when he was almost 2. He was classically gripping his throat, no air in or out, turning purple. I grabbed him, sideways thrust twice and this giant ball of soft taco shell came flying out. He cried for about one second then was fine. l, however, was not. I fell on the floor and cried and shook. Scariest moment of my life but my brain shut off in the moment and my body just did what it was trained to do after years in nursing.

When I was in 6th grade it was mandatory in my health class to learn CPR and the Heimlich. It wasn’t a school thing, it was my teacher specifically. He was awesome and wanted us to always practice safety in everything. He even helped the students that wanted it get certified in first aid- I did. Luckily I’ve never had to use what I learned for more than minor burns, cuts and bruises and just life BS.

Your lucky. I’ve never taken a class but have seen some videos but I’ve had to give it probably 15 to 20 times before because dope kills fast, and sometimes the person has been there a minute and is dead dead, my I found my now boyfriend one day not breathing, no heartbeat, completely blue and with his eyes and mouth wide open, I only had 2 nasal narcan and immediately gave him both and got him up on the couch because there wasn’t room between the couch and coffee table for me to give him cpr he has at least 50+ pounds on me because he’s a man but I got him on that couch no problem and then for 20 to 30 minutes maybe longer I did cpr, I’d exhale any air I had in my lungs and take the biggest breath I could and give it all to him, I had his head back and nose pinched and I did compressions before giving him that first breath and would give him I think 3 to 5 compressions with each breath and did it to the staying alive song, at first for like 5 to 10 minutes there was nothing from him then I noticed that on a few of the breaths he would inhale just the smallest bit so I kept going till when I would start the breath he would finish it every time and then kept going till I saw him inhale and exhale on his own for several breaths in a row and when he was at that point I ran to get him something to drink for when he woke up, he woke up before i was back and wondered why he was soaking wet (I dumped my water on him before realizing he was for real dead because he was slumped over and I didn’t see his face till I grabbed his head and pulled it back) and he was very sick because naloxone throws you into instant horrible withdrawal and while the last thing you want to see someone do after going through that is to immediately do what put them there if you’ve felt what they are feeling and you know u can stop it and make it better you will even though you don’t want to. He was the first person I’d ever saved like that and now I’ve lost count but luckily no one has ever stayed dead around me and hopefully they never do. Also I’ve never been narcaned or brought back because I try to be careful although one time I passed out on a shot before doing half of it and my boyfriend found me my face purple because I had a tie on and I was face down in the bed and he yelled my name, I sat up with a needle sticking out my head shot not even done and I think that because I have to do it slowly due to my small veins Is what saved me from going out

I feel this! My son was born at 26 weeks, and the nurses said he may not cry when he comes out. They tried everything to slow down labor, and help his lungs before birth. I had fallen a couple weeks prior and the placenta tore. Anyways when he was born and I heard that cry it was the best thing in the world. I swear to this day 17yrs later with a healthy amazing teenager I can still hear that cry. ❤

Never been in so much pain, as when needed to, but could not pee! I walked (barely) into an E,R and ASKED for a Foley catheter. Apparently I was born with a ureterocele. My valve had become stuck and ballooned filling my entire bladder. After medicating me my beyond my ability to stay awake, TYVM BTW, They ran some tests and found out my kidney was beginning to shut down. I required emergency surgery. It sucked, but it saved my life. Following up with my urologist, I always got weird looks as a teenage girl in the waiting room full of old men with prostate issues. Thank you, Dr. Nickle and Dr. Morales for saving my life & kidney.

When I AMA’d from the ER, I was just there for an extraordinarily painful sinus infection that flared up in the night when nothing was open but the ER. I was grateful for the emesis bags, but I got out once the local UrgentCare opened because I hadn’t been seen yet (other than triage), and I knew I’d not only get faster treatment, but free up resources in the clearly overwhelmed ED.

I have had to perform those back blows to help my first born daughter who was choking on some of my plastic wedding table decorations as a 6 month old. The table decorations flew out across the room after a few back blows in the position described. I haven't had to do that since.
I don't want to go to the Emergency department unless I have absolutely no other options whatsoever. I have to be practically on death's door to want to go. If people would only go in a serious medical emergency, then we would have less wait time and also those who have just been through getting hit by a car won't get kicked out of hospital when he's just barely able to stand up. If your kid has the sniffles or a bump or bruise, you don't need the Emergency department for that. Go to urgent care instead. Let the kid who's just recovering from a hit and run take up that emergency department bed longer and perhaps get a CT scan to figure out if he has soft tissue damage that they couldn't find on palpation. Like maybe, I don't know, a concussion or whiplash injury? I'm a little bit bitter about that because my 9 year old son was that very person who was dismissed from the emergency department when he hadn't even been given all of the tests and was barely able to stand up after major trauma, and made to wait in the waiting room for his dad with a bunch of little kids who were bouncing around and having a great time, and obviously weren't unwell enough to be there, were being admitted to the Emergency department. Stop treating the emergency department as an urgent care centre or doctor's office. That way patients who are truly unwell enough to be there will not be dismissed prematurely.

Actually me and my friends when we were about 12 all took pregnancy test even tho we were all virgins and they all came back positive and we each probably took another 6 (the girls mom was trying to get pregnant again so they were everywhere) it turned out the specific brand was defective and we all had to go to the ER after one of us fainted and another one of us puke
So ya I can say that happened to us it was a freak manufacturing mistake but non the less it happened

If proning is what's done for those with covid, I guess I should count myself lucky for being such a big side sleeper, not exactly on my stomach, but still giving my lungs room to breath, especially when I did have covid back in January

A couple of years ago I had really bad pneumonia - I went to the ER about it. They not only failed to diagnose me correctly (I had to go to urgent care two days later for that) they did a pregnancy test (blood test) without my knowledge or permission. wtf?

I once had to go to an urgent care for a pregnancy test. I had already bought one from the drugstore and it was positive but because I was 40 years old my husband said that I needed to go and get another one done because he didn’t think that the drugstore one was accurate. When I called urgent care to see if they did pregnancy test, the nurse that I talk to said that your husband actually think a 40 year old can’t get pregnant?

I was in labour for 3 days, i had two foleys inserted and i pushed both of them out because my body was trying to push out a baby with no dialation (i had a fused pelvis and noone knew) in the end they just kept changing the sheets whenever i wet the bed since I was losing water anyway. It made peeing post csection sooo painful and ended up with an infection.

In the choking baby video, if anyone is like "I can thrust like that with my fingers!"
the Red Cross have said that it is ok to thrust like how you would giving cpr on a baby, just use your thumbs.

It's a good idea to have a doctor confirm a positive pregnancy test, because false negatives are rare but possible. But you can't get that at the ER, you need to see an OBGYN.
