  • There is a long list of medications that can cause constipation, are you taking one? Doctors often forget that constipation can be a side effect of the medicine you are taking, and thus don't warn you. Many people think their constipation is caused by something else, never thinking their daily medication could be the cause.

6 weeks ago I went cold turkey off Reactine (cetirizine, zyrtec) after 5 years of daily use. Once the worst of the withdrawals ended, I quickly realized how many side effects I'd had the whole time. I had terrible bowel problems on that med and I blamed my health! Now my IBS issues seem to be clearing up themselves.

Yep,certain heart meds switched me from IBSU to IBSC. Holigos helped, but having to take these drugs is frustrating. I also worry about my colon up regulating to laxatives,so I don't use them often.
Also,I went to Daily Dose of Medicine linked in this comments page and one of the offering was "detoxifying" the pancreas. As soon as I saw that,I left.
Could you do one on why detoxifying is bs?

Traditional cures for constipation were earlier sauerkraut, also a way to preserve cabbage over the winter, and later milk of magnesia. Any big pharmacy will have stool softener pills on up for laxative effects. Like prescription drugs, you might need to try several to find one that works for you without any bad side effects.

I for one haven’t trusted doctors for over 40 years. When I see family members on tons of medications, and take them because they believe their doctors, I just want to spit! I love doctors like yourself and other doctors who broke out of their molds and really look at different research. I have known doctors get their pockets lined by big pharmaceutical companies, and which many people die from every year. We are just cattle to them and it’s about time we take our health into our own hands, and if needed get help from doctors like yourself. It’s going to all change very soon. In the meantime I have to talk, again, to my husband about his different medications and first have him get at least 50 lbs off, then he probably won’t need anything he is on. Oh and on another subject you talk about is the Carnivore Diet. I need to get more educated on it, only so I can explain it to anyone I talk with. I’m getting huge resistance right now.

Dr. Berry: you left out 3 entire classes that cause the Big C: benzodiazepines, anti epileptics, anti psychotics, and far more than just two of the anti depressants-basically all of the anti depressant class can cause constipation. ALL of the aforementioned classes cause constipation because they change the natural chemistry of the gut/brain axis. Once in awhile someone will have diarrhea from trying to stop one of these too fast or in very rare cases one of the drug classes mentioned might have a paradoxical effect and just do not work as intended. You are probably not too familiar with these drugs Dr. Berry because you are not a psychiatrist. I can further tell you that only about 1 in 100 psychiatrist can tell a patient who is taking any of the afore mentioned drugs how to safely taper off them. That’s an issue for another day but that’s the case in the US. European doctors have developed some tapering methods that can actually work.

    • @k.c.8535

Chronic constipation may cause an accumulation of hardened stool that gets stuck in your intestines. Intestine that protrudes from the anus (rectal prolapse). Straining to have a bowel movement can cause a small amount of the rectum to stretch and protrude from the anus👍

After watching one of your videos today, I am interested in learning more about intermittent fasting. I have no trouble not eating from 6:30 pm until after 10:30 am. I do that naturally already. However, I do enjoy a great cup of coffee when I wake up, usually around 6:00. I have been putting cream in it and not even one half teaspoon of sugar. Eliminating the sugar would be fairly easy, but I would like to be able to use cream. The fattest cream I can find is only 35% (I only use high fat, lactose-free dairy products when I can find them because I am lactose intolerant; covid has made my search more difficult). Would that be breaking my fast? I should add that I don't need to lose weight, and have no issues such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

The best thing to do to avoid constipation is NEVER, EVER take medications. If the doctor says you should go medication, IGNORE THEM!!! Medications cause way more harm than the condition itself, particularly if that condition has no symptoms present and you are otherwise fine. Being on medications only causes you to become sick and develop health problems that make you go to the hospital regularly. Having that condition is much better to taking medication.
