  • Obstetric Fistula is a devastating childbirth injury caused by prolonged, obstructed labor in the absence of timely and adequate medical care. The root causes of obstetric fistula include poor quality of care and inadequate access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, lack of reproductive rights (RR), poverty, sociocultural barriers, and gender inequalities. Multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination, marginalization, lack of education, child marriage, malnutrition, and adolescent pregnancy are the main contributory factors to the existence of obstetric fistula.
The International Day to End Obstetric Fistula (#IDEOF) was instituted by the United Nations to be commemorated annually on May 23rd. Its goal is to raise awareness, strengthen partnerships, and foster commitment, national leadership, and ownership to #endfistula
2023 marks the 10th year of the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula and the 20th year of the global Campaign to End Fistula.
