- Unless you’ve completed medical school and are a doctor yourself, you probably believe various stereotypes across surgical specialties and have a distorted perception of the personality types of surgeons. Some stereotypes are true, but most aren’t. This is the truth about each specialty.

What are some other specialty stereotypes you've heard of that I didn't cover!? Let me know =)
Med School Insiders Cardiothoracic!
ENT
Vascular Surgery please
Cardiothoracic surgery
EM Docs!
Yes please do another specialty video. Cardiology, anesthesiology, and even family medicine
seconded!
Agreed :D I'm looking forward to seeing what you say about my speciality :o
Yas, non surgical specialties next
Yep, would like to see that video too, I can predict what would be said about family medicine but let's see xx
Yes! Psychiatry too please!
I feel like anyone who calls any kind of doctor/surgeon a "dumb bro" is a lil' misguided
They're just insecure.
theres a lot of bad people who become doctors too lol
@@pavk883 So true 😤
@@pavk883 thats true but they are bad decision makers not dumb, dumb people don't work hard and study 8+ years, they settle for less.
@@italislife7461 believe me there are dumb people that were in my class and became doctors. you dont need to be super smart for the job. just really goal oriented and disciplined
So these five doctors decide to go duck hunting. While waiting, they agree to take turns when shooting. After a bit, some ducks show up...
The GP gets ready to shoot, but then thinks, "Is that a duck? I'd better get a second opinion." The duck gets away.
The Ob-gyn gets ready to shoot, but then thinks "What if the duck getting ready to lay? Can't do it!" The duck gets away.
The psychologist gets ready to shoot, but then thinks "I know it's a duck, but does it know it's a duck?" The duck gets away.
The surgeon gets ready to shoot, and BLAMM. The duck falls to the ground.
He turns to the last doctor, a pathologist. "Go see if that was a duck."
I have heard this one...
Internists: Know everything, but never do anything.
Surgeons: Know nothing, but does everything.
Psychiatrists: Neither know, nor do anything.
Pathologists: Both knows, and does, everything...
...but then it is already too late!
Haha funny joke. But how can someone be so utterly stupid as to fucking mistake PSYCHOLOGIST with PSYCHIATRIST? Unless it is intentional, in which case you are a douchebag and I hope you never step in a medical school or anything of the like.
MrGrenardo you seem very personally invested in a strangers joke...you alright bud?
MrGrenardo looks like we found the neurosurgeon 🎊

I am doctor in the UK and it's amazing how we have the same general stereotypes about surgeons over here despite being in different continents. Great work for debunking some of these myths! xx
I'm barely 14 and I'm already scared just about considering to be in the medical field

@@lydia3139 let us know in the comments how it works out
Dr. Hosa Is the stereotypes about Nurse the same too?
The most toxic part of medicine in-fighting is how competitiveness of specialities falsely correlates to the quality of a doctor.
What do you call Two orthopedics looking at EKG?
Double blind trial! 🤣🤣🤣
@EKGsandPianoKeys That's hilarious haha, in his defense maybe he knew how to read an EKG but didnt bother for that specific patient
Is there a fracture?
Hahaha
That is a Running Joke that surgeons can’t properly read an ECG since they only look for the General Well Being of the patient in the Pre or Post Operative period and only see the EKG to make sure the Patient doesn’t have any condition that predisposes to Clot formation (like FA)
But they won’t diagnose a Second Grade Mobitz Type 2 AV Block since they tend to ask an Internist to read the EKG at times
I personally want to be a General Surgeon, but many people have told me that I think more like an Internal Medicine Doctor

Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons be like: “AM I A JOKE TO YOU?, I GOT MY DENTAL AND MEDICAL DEGREE”
I am doing both at the same time, and I want to be an OMF surgeon. most people, when talking about surgical specialities forget about them.
Hahaha oral surgeons have a worse God complex than neurosurgery
Also, OMFS has an absolutely amazing scope
That's only required in the UK, I think. In the US, it's just a regular specialty.
@@pnp072000 Romania too, you need both degrees
If you want a more informed opinion about the stereotypes, ask the anaesthesiologist. We see all of the specialties in the same OR all day.
OMG! I'm an orthopedic surgeon in China and what he said about orthopedic surgeons is the truth, lol. It's very interesting that people of the same type chose the same specialty.
Quite weird, because Ortho is a very vast speciality, with tons of equipment and procedures, yes sure we might not be that great at patient care regarding their medical pathologies, but after all that is not our main concern. Ortho bro's are mad skilled surgeons, better than most of other fields.
@@ramondamian5067 I'm in India and here too Orthopedic surgeons are regarded as dudebros.
Thanks for this video! Will be waiting for a part 2. I think i can agree with most of them but in the end all are respected
How do you hide $100 from an anesthesiologist?
You don't need to hide it, just don't wake him up!
and never hide it in the sudoku book
*From orthopedic? Give it to the patient ( they only look, and treat the X-Ray) 🤣🤣
* From Neurosurgeon? Give it to their family!
* From plastic surgeon? Don't even try, you can't.
* From Internist?
Do maxillofacial surgery! Where you have to do dentistry, medicine and surgical training!
Your videos are amazingly helpful! Thanks for producing such great content! I would totally love to see a similar video on non-surg specialties.
Yes please follow up with other stereotypes! Everything you post is golden, Dr. J. ✨
Thank you Dr Jubba for posting a video about Surgery!
Do the non-surgical specialties! I can’t wait to hear about Psych
@Ricki G lol they went through medical school and graduated as doctor so they are indeed doctors, they just specialize in Psychiatry, people tend to forget that every specialist is a general practitioner before they took their specialty course
Everyone think Psych are deranged (and they're a little bit), but most of them (or at least the most I've met) are very charming and have an inner peace like no one else has (in some sort of way like pediatrics).
Lol doctors are one of the only group I’ve seen who actively reinforce their own stereotypes.
i clicked on this so incredibly fast; this is an interesting video, and good job! 😁
Hi Doctor Jubbal would you mind doing a video on which specialty gives the MOST and Less work/life balance???
The rumor about certain specialties is that they never see their family so they need to find a partner who will be okay with that. For those of us who would like to get married after med-school could you offer some guidance?
Yea me too
Radiology for sure or dermatology.
Ophthalmology. I have good timings and I love it
or maybe rheumatology. Anesthesiology can have a good schedule depending on where you work. If you work in an outpatient surgery center then you won’t have to take call.
Loved this video! Do one on primary medicine physicians!
Some of us OB/Gyns take extreme pride in our cesarean scars and closure. Anyone who thinks OB/Gyns aren’t surgeons have never seen a cesarean hysterectomy or laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy. Oh and don’t forget that the laparoscopic approach was invented by OB/Gyns! Great video and yes it is 4am and I’m still up. 😳
Exactly! I hate when people look down on it it’s giving misogyny
Yup... Ob-Gyns are always overworked and handle too much pressure. Csec is a surgery and is not a minor procedure as d video portrays
I’ve always wanted to specialize into general surgery and I’ve never in my life thought of it as an ‘easy’ ‘non competitive’ specialty. However, this doesn’t change my view on general surgery and I will happily stand by my choice in what I want to specialize in :) At the end we all know that doing what you enjoy the most brings happiness into ones living
As a high school student who is interested in medicine, I find your videos super interesting and helpful!!! In your future videos, can you please include more information about pediatric surgery/pediatrics in general?
Loved this, Kevin. But small disagreement - I've actually seen some of the most incredible surgical nuance and technical finesse during all my training from our general surgery / trauma faculty. For example - kocherizing the duodenum in a field coated in bile, blood and more doesn't sound like it would be delicate, but it teaches us to be every bit as meticulous as when we're setting up a vascular anastomosis
Great point!
@@MedSchoolInsiders I'm on a pathology rotation and today while I was summarizing the op note I mentioned they kocherized the duodenum and everyone in the room looked at me like I was an alien. I was so confused until the other medical student asked me how they made the duodenum kosher lol
If someone says General Surgery is easy and for "crude people",they obviously have never seen an oesophagectomy.
Trauma surgeons have the technical finesse of an elephant tap dancing. Simpleton cookbook checklist brainless autonotons.
I’d love to see you dedicate an entire video on psychiatry & the various sub-specialties in that field of work
Love this video! I would love to see one for non surgical specialties!
Ophthalmology, ENT, and dermatology!
"orthopedic surgeons are strong as an ox and twice as smart"
Excellent video both part 1 and 2.
finally someone talked about OB-GYNs!!! all these medical yt and nobody ever talks about OB-GYNs!! Thank you, Dr. J!! OB-GYNs are some of the coolest, most chill physicians. I work as a scribe in the ED and when they gets calls in the middle of night, instead of arguing and getting mad (cough) cardiologists (cough), they just say "ok" and come down to the ED. Can you please do a day in the life of an OB-GYN please?
Yeah I’m waiting for that too
Loved the video. it was really helpful. But I would love one about cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, otorhinolaryngology and ophthalmology. Thank you so much.

I would love to see pediatrics, dermatology, or maybe a video on how physicians who work with missions organizations in third world countries, practice medicine without perhaps the equipment that doctors in first world countries might have!
Pediatrics is extremely variable
But Neonatologists are probably more tough going than General Attending Pediatricians
My urology preceptor is one of the funniest people I know. Great video!

Dr. Jamal I have watched a substantial number of your video's, and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Gave me a more current and freshened perspective on a number of different aspects related to education and becoming established in the practice of medicine in general and surgery in particular. I feel that your discussions are, generally speaking, oriented more towards surgery. However, you are, after all, a plastic surgeon. It would seem that a great deal of medicine, has remained unchanged, while at the same time the computer, IT has greatly impacted how students go about accessing & assimilating knowledge. Even with the enhancements gained to both teaching and learning, much still relies on the motivation and diligence of the individual to gain a solid foot hold academically. I also feel that American med school grads would still benefit by learning and applying the "scientific method". I did two fellowships in UK. But, a graduate degree in a basic science would add too many years to an already long course of study. I must tell you that my difficulty in gaining admission to med school and immediate enrollment in a Ph.D. program in clinical biochem. was the best thing that could have happened to me. Made all the difference for me to begin medical education having first completed an earned doctorate.
Well, I wish you well in your business and surgical careers. It would be great if you could add some discussion on the "third" branch of the profession, there's plenty on 2 branches, namely medicine and surgery, but only a mere mention of the 3rd, that would be pathology,
my area of endeavor, maybe I could gain some insight into how I fell in, back in 1980.
My boy just completed int. med at R.I.Hosp/Brown U. in June; cardio. fellow now, then card
electrophys fellow after. Thanks. Best Wishes.

How about cardio thoracic surgeons?
Spot on
I have been in health care for almost 40 (oh dear God) years; initially as an RN in an inner city trauma center, and then, for the past 26 years as a Family Practice Nurse Practitioner. I have worked with just about every branch of medicine (especially as residents) and seen the kindness, humor, ego, and, on rare occasions a**h***s. One of the most heartwarming stories I have is when I received an email from one of the Bariatric Surgeons who cared for one of my patients a year and a half earlier. The surgeon emailed that he had been going through charts to see how his previous patients were doing and was surprised to see our patient had died; he asked what had happened. I emailed back that he had killed himself when his wife left him; he did this after signing himself into the hospital for 72 hours to get help. Upon release, he shot himself. I had seen him probably 2 weeks prior to the incident and he was so thrilled about getting his life back after the surgery and had lost over 125#.
I wrote how guilt ridden I felt because I knew how devastated he was and I meant to reach out to him, but got swamped, and then it was too late. The surgeon wrote back the kindest email writing about times he felt he let the patient down and sent me quite a bit of emotional support. I was so impressed he was checking on his prior patients (obviously, he does not make a penny doing so, contrary to stereotypes) but he honestly cared. And his compassion to me was something I will remember always………
Can u do video on cardiothoracic surgery?
that is what I want to go into
Videos like these make me wanna do surgery more, but the training (and lifestyle) seems so rough :/
Ent and Hand have good lifestyles after residency
Medicine is tough...7 years minimum training to get to your first specialty. So those 20s are gobbled up by studying, memorizing dissecting cadavers, rounds interviewing patients, trying specialities u don't want as part of training while you are criticized and responsible for real people's care. Then u choose your life of dermatology looking at acne all day, but no on call, or emergencies. So choose what you love, not choose for lifestyle.
Joy Webster just be true to you. I think to most people, you do something for 40+ hours and week and the excitement, passion, and overall satisfaction for the job dulls eventually. Most jobs become just that. Jobs. When the novelty of a new job wears off, what position would you rather be in? Plenty of disposable income and time to fund your hobbies, pursue dreams outside of career aspirations, and spend time with your loved ones? Or have very little control over your time and sporadic work life balance that hinges on your ability to experience this one and only life you have. Very few people on their death bed wish they’d have spent more time at work. But that being said, lifestyle in surgery is possible. Pick lifestyle friendly surgical specialties (MOHS, Breast focused oncology surgical practice, ENT, Ortho sports, Hands (not at trauma centers), Ophthalmology private practice etc etc) and/or be willing to sacrifice location/pay. Losing your 20s and probably early 30s is a given in surgery. But pick the right surgical sub specialty, and as a attending, your life does not need to be sacrificed to the alter of medicine
i really like general surgery i can see myself doing it in the far future
