  • In this video we show you some of the tricks of installing these Panasonic FV-0511VKL2 and FV-0511VK2 fans. These are a little trickier to install than your standard cheap-o fan, so Perry from Done Right Electric helped me out to do this properly. Hopefully this can help some of you in the future as you install these fans. They are pretty awesome for the price, and in my opinion, well worth it for moving fresh clean air.
I purchased the fans from here:

The mounting bracket is actually supposed to be used in both new construction and a retrofit installation. It folds to allow it to fit up in the hole through the drywall, then unfolds and should be screwed to framing. This allows the fan to be secured on two sides, as opposed to one side like you did. These are large heavy fans and should be mounted firmly.

Yep. I just installed one and it was a dream compared to what I saw depicted online. The exhaust port and junction box assembly slides off for retrofit installation. I had solid ducting, so I removed the exhaust flap and foil taped the connection from the inside of the ducting. Pleasantly surprised.

The metal mounting bracket is for new and retrofit. The electrician doesn't know when he's talking about. You install the folding bracket between your ceiling joists then attach your ducts to the Panasonic duct assembly. Then the housing box lays flat on drywall, screwed through the drywall and into the metal bracket, then you mount the motor and hookup electrical harness.

You can use this in a remodel with the bracket. The trick is that the vent coupling and electrical box comes off. You then wire/duct that part first. Then the fan part will slide back into it and against the bracket. The instructions have a real brief area mentioning it. I missed it a first but caught it on second glance.

This video was crazy helpful for a lot of reasons. However, digging into this model fan a bit, it looks like you should be able to install the mounting bracket on a remodel and insert the box without attic access.
The reason the mounting bracket bends is so that you can insert it through a drywall hole that's only big enough for the box. The metal plate that has the junction box and vent hookup on it, which would block you from sticking the box up into a box-sized hole, comes off and can be mounted before the rest of the box.
It looks like you're meant to mount the bracket into the empty hole, connect your wiring and vent pipe to the detached hookup panel, install that to the mounting bracket, and THEN install the rest of the box up into the hole.
I haven't actually done this yet, but I'm basing this off of videos on the "Panasonic Business Solutions" youtube channel, and the amazon product listings for these fans, which show the bracket installation and removable hookup panel.
Just thought I'd mention this before anyone else is intimidated by these fans, or rips their hair out trying to get them in through the attic. :)

15:05 NOOOOOOO the bracket is used 100% used in the retrofit. the bracket slides open to be secured to your framing members which you can reach through the pre cut hole and you dont slide it down onto the bracket, you push it up into the bracket and then bolt the fan casing to the bracket for rigidity. Attach bracket to wood frame, slide in fan housing, then the fan, then the cover.

It's not as powerful as I thought it would be, but it works very well. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGjG43--gYqIoT4Xkur2PqCrtbKwTv2h There are three options to circulate air, and best of all a remote control for us lazy people. Installation was a breeze (no pun intended). It actually took longer to open the box then it did putting the side extenders on and sitting it in the window opening. It's a perfect alternative when you want airflow, but not the AC. Just might order another one for a different room. UPDATE: Bought another one like I said. They work great. Why not have two...

  • @theboss1625
    @theboss1625 3 роки тому +6

YO Matt, you need a new handy man. You can DEFINITELY push the box up. The system is basically modular, and you can it all apart and slide everything into place as a retrofit. That system can definitely be installed when there is a room above.

Panasonic has fans that are like this one, easier to install in new construction, and they have models for retrofit. At my house I first bought one like the one in the video and hired an electrician, he was so pissed to install it, said it was the hardest fan ever. Then on the other bathroom I bought the retrofit model and installed myself, it was a piece of cake. On the retrofit model you slide the brackets through the hole, then extend it and attach the bracket to the joist. Then the silver part of the fan with the outlet and electrical connection comes off of the black part and you mont that to the bracket. Then finally slide the black part in and connect the harness that comes from the electrical box. Then drive a couple of screws that hold the black portion of the case to the bracket and you're done. Very easy.

In this situation he is using the white wire as a hot. He has rewire the circuit in the attic junction box to make it so. You see, In the electrical code it is permissible, under an exception, to utilize a white wire as a hot but only if it feeds a switch. You may never use a bare copper or green wire in any circumstance for anything other than a ground as it is not a current carrying conductor, but the white can become a hot if used in a switch. The red wires, for this fan, may be used to manually control High/Low CFM. When the switch is toggled “ON” than the CFM is in “High” mode, whereas in the off or down position the fan is on “Low” CFM mode. The red wires are low voltage wires only and Panasonic warns not to apply 120V to these specific wires. The electrician may place the switch for the low voltage red wires anywhere, which to me screams… use a “Shelly Switching Device” which would allow you to change the CFM with your phone… from anywhere. OOOOOH BOY! That is DA BOMB! Heck you could install the same type of Shelly device to turn lights on and off at your house too… using your phone… and do it from anywhere in the world… if your phone gets a signal. WOW!🙀.

I wish you had posted something about this prior to just filming the video and installation. I had a similar situation but solved it myself. I use 12 volt DC "computer fans" which are DESIGNED to run 24/7/365. I mounted them outside my home in water prof boxes so there is no noise at all inside. The box they are mounted in are connected into the house - hence they extract air. Because the system run s on 12 DC all I need do is to run 12 transformer leads to the motors (very safe). Because the fans are DESIGNED to run forever, they have been operating for 24 years with only one replacement ($10 bucks each) . I keep a back-up just in case one craps out and I then will get another backup to store. I also installed two fresh air inlet vents so that fresh air can enter the home. Because the computer fans move less air than the Panasonic, air conditioning and heating is virtually unaffected. I also have the same Panasonic "bathroom ceiling fan" you just installed and while it runs OK I dislike the noise - it is not as quiet as they say if you need to listen to it all day and night. The Panasonic unit is now only used as an ordinary bathroom fan as one would normally use it for. I also dislike the fake looking LED light it gives off but there is at present no replacement bulb unit that is warmer. After "Professionals" said they could not improve on a store bought ceiling fan THAT is when I decided to solve the problem myself - works like a charm for over 24 years! If your Panasonic fans don't work out - contact me and I'll be more specific.

The vent should be removed from the fan assembly, wired and installed and the assembly should be installed and secured to the bracket last.

But thank you for the clarification on the red wires. The instructions are terrible and say On to use pick a flow setting and Off to use multi-speed settings. Doesn't say anything about motion or condensation modules so since I want to use pick a flow when motion is detected I connected them together. Going to have to bring the fan back down and disconnect them.

You are, but fresh air needs to be introduced.

Being as obsessed as you are you should look into Aria Vent covers it flushes the look into the ceiling so you don’t see a ugly looking grille they make an exhaust fan model fantastic product I became addicted put em all thru the house painted covers to match wall and ceiling colors blows people away they scratch a bald spot on they’re head when I explain what and how they work I modified and fabbed my covers to use the Panasonic light and sensors along with them

This is not right. You actually don’t need attic access with this one, that’s what that bracket is for.

  • @cengeb

Oy vey, use Wagos, and the bracket is so the unit slides up from the bottom. The flex bracket works great, retrofit made easy. Follow the directions. Ya take the duct wiring box side off as a separate slide up into the hole, it snaps back together, this electrician is cluless

  • @cengeb

The cardboard is to make the new hole size correct, its plainly written on it. Always use the supplied bracket, it's meant for retrofit, oy vey....follow the instructions
