  • Mazda's prototype endurance racing efforts widely became popular when they won Le Mans in 1991 with the 787B, but that wasn't their only achievement in prototype racing... Mazda returned to taste victory AGAIN, this time within the IMSA championship supplying a factory backed DPI effort from 2017 - 2021. This is the story of that project, and the road of prototype endurance racing after Mazda's Le Mans victory in 1991.

i saw the show model at the LA auto show when it was revealed, I was floored by how good it looked. That deep metallic red, the way the grille came out of the nose, how simple and clean everything was... I didn't realize racecars could look like that. Sad they didn't make a new car for GTP, I would have loved to see something with that design language still running.

The Mazda DPi is actually more successful than the 787B.
The car is mostly remembered for winning lemans, but if you look at the rest of the seasons, the car was really behind.
The DPi was able to improve and become really competitive. Expecially 2020, the first time I was watching the IMSA races live.
And a cool thing I love the DPi is that Mazda was using a 2.0L I4 turbo agains Caddy giant V8 and Acura V6 Twin Turbo and was able to be toe to toe with them.
I wish Mazda would return to prototype racing.

Glad this channel was recommended. As a current BP Mazda3 owner, and a former FC RX7 owner, I really hope Mazda comes back to IMSA. Sucks that racing is expensive, and they're a small car company compared to their rivals.
Mazda is such a underrated car company. They make fun reliable cars. I went from a BMW e90 that I had for 12 years to a BP Mazda3 hatchback awd. In terms of driving fun, I personally think Mazda is the affordable Japanese equivalent of "The Ultimate Driving Machine" . They build what BMW used to build back in the 80s to early 00s. The Mazda3 feels like I'm driving a e36, not a lot of power but it feels balanced and driver focus without being so harsh on the road for us older guys.

I think the real issue for Mazda is that they are not a luxury car brand. Selling high ticket price cars helps pay for the racing and prototype racing is very expensive sport. With the exception of Toyota ( which does have a luxury car division, Lexus) all of the WEC and IMSA manufacturers are luxury car makers. Mazda's press releases for the decision to leave stated they are going to focus on "grass roots" racing in lieu of continuing to spend on prototype (and instead of possibly shifting its focus to GT racing).

If you think you built a good car, and arent getting results, call reinhold joest lol. If his team cant win with it, its probably not a good car. But in this case, joest proved they did indeed have a good car. They just needed a team with alot more prototype experience to prove it and tell mazda what really needed improvement. Then multimatic just kept that momentum going. Speedsource is obviously a good team, but being primarily a gt team, they were a bit out of their league in dpi imo

The Mazda DPI was the most beautiful DPI right from the start. The Multinatic chassis is simply beautiful. In 2017 he lacked a bit of speed but after that he showed more and more often that he had real potential. At the end of the DPI era he achieved several poles and three important victories. Road America, Watkins Glen and the 12 H of Sebring. And I liked it best in metallic gray. After that they were both red metallic.

I love the Mazda car manufacturer. I worked a total of four year at a Mazda dealership and witnessed personally their customer care during the rotary engine teething years. I worked in the parts department and watch them improve their parts and they found a solution to the problem parts., watchjng through the part number changes. I also witnessed the brand warranty cars that were out of warranty back in the mid to late 70's that had rotary engine issues. This company was totally committed to their name and their customers. This is a great small auto manufacturer that loves their customers and loves racing. I'm sure they will be back. I would LOVE to see them rock the auto world with a GT3 car. They could do it if they wanted.

Mazda's DPI was not only a beautiful race car (more so in that soul red from the mx5), but one of the overall fastest in the field. They set track records at Daytona with a 4cylinder vs the big V8's that GM brought. I was really sad to see them leave motorosports again. I think had they secured their partnership with Toyota a little bit sooner, maybe they could have the hybrid tech to have a car for the hypercar / gtp class. There is still 1 team out there that reminds me so much of Mazda. Vasser-Sullivan Racing Lexus. Again, an absolutely stunning car, one of the best liveries, fights for championships, BUT still missing that overall GT win in a major endurance race (like Daytona, Sebring, or Petit Le Mans .

To be honest I think the DPi class is a really underrated class as a whole, mostly because it was bridging the gap between LMP1 and Daytona Prototypes, which ALMS enthusiasts will know that NASCAR basically said "F you" to anything faster than DPs. It showed the beginning of unity between NASCAR and France aand lead to LMDh today.
However the Mazda was another breed. The car was f-ing beautiful in every way, truly the best DPI that was out there. You'd see the two Acura and Caddy fanboys fighting tooth and nail for supremacy, and if you said "Mazda is the best!" They'd both turn and say "we know, we're fighting for second here." Everyone loved the Mazdas.
Also you should've mentioned how hard they were getting hit with BoP in 2019 cause THAT was pretty funny, cause they kept winning after getting like 30kg added

As an Englishman I can really get behind Mazda as a smaller manufacturer, an underdog so to speak. Their cars are quite good looking, and of course they make the lovely MX 5. They are interesting. SKYACTIV-X is a compression ignition PETROL engine! Really efficient and torquey. Compare that to Toyota who make very good, but boring cars. I'd love to see them in Hypercar, but it's probably too much financially, even if they went LMdH. And that's a shame.

    • @CharlesMiddleton-ms2ng

The Skyactiv engine would've been greatly helped with the addition of the Bosch-Williams hybrid system. It could've been the equivalent to the Porsche V4 hybrid in design, not to mention the performance capability to equal many LMDhs today. It's definitely worth a proper shot.

the Mazda RT24P is a really beautiful car, it's a shame Mazda didn't continue to race it for one last season in DPi.
Also would it be an idea to look at each of the other DPi cars that raced as well? I think all of them have pretty interesting stories

Loved the Mazda Dpi program as those prototypes were beautiful especially that crimson red and it wasn’t from Honda/ acura or a GM brand like caddy.

Have you heard of Alfa romeo? They said they wanted to pursue racing in endurance (WEC) after they left f1

The Mazda DPi was by far the best-looking car in that era of racing in IMSA. Really wished they would have entered a car or two with the LMDh regulations.

I honestly hadn't heard of this car as I don't follow American endurance racing. But, on this evidence, I think they could have adapted well to LMDh if they were willing to put the resources into it.

Always great learning some IMSA history. I do always get caught up for a second hearing WTR Cadillac and Penske Acura

I remember the morning reading about Mazda pulling out of IMSA. It made me feel a little sad , they added something special towards the series.

These where my first team when I started watching IMSA because Olly Jarvis was one of the only names I recognised. I still miss the team and really hope Mazda come back with the new regs

I really truly wish Mazda return to prototypes in the form of an LMH entry!
Just imagine how sexy it would look...

Wow I didn’t know they were that successful. Shame I like seeing different manufacturers race luke the glory days of f1 and now seems like a perfect time for manufacturers to come racing in either WEC or IMSA

Mazda would have a perfect base for building an lmdh thqnks to this car. It is sad they choose to not to

It was an interesting story I haven't heard of before because I didn't know that Mazda joined a prototype racing as a factory team even though they didn't take part in domestic races as a factory here in Japan.
