Good day, I have recently taken over a 2002 X5 E53 M57 3.0D (right hand drive) from the in-laws after losing my job. The X5 has been standing for a while and to be honest I don't think it was well maintained. When we took it, there was little sign of smoke coming from the car but after the first 600km the smoke started pouring our from the back. I had a general service done and replaced some of the pipes that have started to perish due to the car standing in harsh sun hoping it was a leaky pipe or something similar. I have found employment again but this is the only mode of transport we have for a while so we need to make sure to take care of it. I am now looking to change the PCV but the locals (including 3 BMW dealerships) all tell me there is no different part for the 2002 models than the loo roll that is currently in there. It is completely clogged. Do you perhaps have a part number for me or a link where I can purchase the new complete unit and the housing? I will have to bring it into the country and want to make double sure I get the right part Thank you for a great video as well :-)
Hmm strange here in Germany almost everyone downgrades to the Vortex Filter. It is much more capable of filtering the oil than the zyklon (you just upgraded to). Even BMW suggest in Rheingold to downgrade. The only downside withthe vortex is, that you have to change it regularly (every 30.000 km - max. 50.000 km).
I'm thankful this video exist if wasn't you I wouldn't never change my vortex breather not to mention when I removed the old one someone took out the filter from the vortex ....unbelievable I drive my car like that for almost 2 years I think that's why my car was rough, running tanks again.
I have changed this twice myself and once at the garage. The first time was because of heavy smoke and BMW explained I need to change it. I have a 2003 X5 E53 and one I have changed is the old one you mention and have cast. I have just changed yesterday but I have never had this explained to me. So looks like I will have to do it again.😢 Since getting that smoke 5 years back. Now I am really paranoid with this filter. Thanks for that explaination!!! BMW did not tell me.
Any chance you can provide the part number for the new type breather? It looks like an easy job to DIY and very beneficial for the engine, I am definitely going to do this!
Guys should the “vortex” filter snap into place in the housing ? I managed to do mine yesterday and it didn’t snap in but it the housing screwed in flush after I pushed it down.
Thanks so much for this video. Going to do this on my e39, can't believe my specialist garage haven't replaced it but it seems they haven't. I have a bit of smoke and smell. Smell most obviously noticeable at idle when sat on the drive. If this is the culprit will replacing it mean problem solved or is it likely something else (turbo?) has been wrecked in the process? Car is not down on power as far as I can tell but it hasn't been used often for a long time so maybe I've forgotten how quick it was! I would not say the smoke is particularly noticeable visually, mainly the smell! Thanks again.
I dont know if you are still answering questions but I have old style breather filter and I have this thing that a lot of oil is going through intake, sometimes car struggles to go then squishes a lot of oil through that tube that comes out of air filter housing(below it) and it goes smooth for a while again. I thought my turbo was bad, but I removed it and took it to the shop and they said turbo is in a good condition.
Nice one. Bit fast N furious 🙂 When breather gets clogged, oil return from turbo to sump is sort of blocked, results in turbo fail in long run...right? Does this happen with vortex breather?
Hi, does this vortex breather also need to get replaced from time to time? My 2009 E60 530d LCI 6speed manual already has it, but with 105.000miles. Should I get a new one? I meant it's only 25euros.
I've recenlty changed mine it was already the new type , but I wanted serviced non the less , I bought a Swag ccv vortex type . It was right around when the weather was starting to get cold. After I changed it my car started to smoke white smoke when cold and rpm hunting after the temp needle gets out of the blue it all goes away . Its m47 2003 320d is it possible that the new ccv is defective , the car does not seem to burn oil .
@forsaken5897 Hello bro 3 yrs passed but did you fixed it?I have a bit of smoke but cat tell it is oil or diesel...(smells diesel,i have no egr snd cats, straight pipe exhaust)So im paranoid of pcv😅I got it changed to a new one but it its cheap thing so idk what to do.Buy better quality cyclone or old type vortex.
Would a clogged vortex cause sluggish low down power? If I’m in 3rd at 20mph and put foot down the car bogs & then when turbo kicks in at 1700rpm it takes off
Just to update you guys. Early m57 in e39 and e60 has loo type .Revision lead to vortex type 05/-08 approx LCI onwards has nothing inside. Vortex lead to more issues bmw left out and now you will get more oil in intercooler and charge air pipes. Nothing wrong with turbos here. Just live with it it’s inherent design issue. Avoid vortex or loo but do change due to CCV rubber wears over time
This is the first time I've heard about the having nothing inside. Please tell us more. Why build something with this part inside if it will work without?!
Thinking of changing too. Any real benefits of the new type? I just change the looroll filter every other oil change. Costs 8 bucks with gaskets included. If you don´t change it it pressurizes the head/crank and smokes from underneath the oil cap.
I ve opened mine and it didnt have the filter inside. The car was remapped, is this could be the reason why no filter or person who took it out is just an idiot?
When i replaced mine on my E90 330d there was no loo roll type filter nor a vortex filter. Is this normal for the filters to be removed? The new one I bought for it was a good quality Febi Bilstein OEM one without a vortex filter, so I was wondering why there was no vortex filter with it if the vortex is an updated version.
Hi. Great video. Thanks so much. I am wandering if the 2011 335d with M57Y engine needs that replaced or bmw already switched to the new style for that year. Thanks so much.
I just went online to search for the new breather and to my surprise they are sold as a whole set or you can buy the Vortex breather part separately. So my question is can you just take the filter part away and replace it with the new Vortex breather part and will it fit with the old plastic cover? I do understand that plastic goes bad anyway and also the red rubber sealing which as ju said can rupture and cause a lot of damage. So I understand that it's best to the change the whole set every time just to be sure.
Hi mate love the videos I just need to ask would this be in the same location on a 2003 range rover L322 with the m57 and is the part still the same ??
Hey BMW DOCTOR , great video very helpfull , will check my breather tomorrow to see if its old style as i had old style one on e46, now lets say loo roll is clogged and bad , would this cause any engine power loss ??? Thanks
Probably no chance of a reply but worth a shot. Got the m57 231bhp. Getting 22mpg on a good day, could the ccv cause bad fuel economy, checked most other things Inc thermostats ect. At my wits end and have no other ideas on what could be causing it
Hey, did you control the running temperature of the engine? I've replaced both thermostats about 2 years ago and the fuel consumption went up again recently. After connecting the OBDII device, I have seen the temperature fluctuates between 80 and 85 degrees, rarely goes up to 90. I replaced the thermostats again and the fuel consumption dropped from 7,8l/100 km in the summer to 6,9l/100km now in the winter. There is also a 3rd thermostat if you have an automatic transmission oil cooler, I've read about these going bad and causing high consumption.
Hi, Another video of yours concerning the M 57 engine you talk about the CCV system that needs to be changed to the plastic one, I have a BMW X5 M57, Question is: is this the CCV you talk in another video or is this something else that needs to be done as well? Is the CCV system only plastic hoses that needs to be changed ?
Bmw comeback and sayd on intern info to comeback to old style cause Vortex its the one giving turbo problems My qyestion is I need to comeback to old style How can i find the plastic box cause they only sellyng the filter
Awesome video and channel! Just a question regarding the breather, my 530d -09 LCi has the new, open breather, no vortex or filter in it. What would you reccomend changing it to? The car has 230k km on the meter. Cheers!
Your videos have helped me to track down so many issues with my car, cant thank you enough! Whats the estimated change intervals for these filters? Nothing in the manual about it. Or is the smoking the indication to start investigating?
Hi mate got a oil level sensor fault Changed part also wiring to plug new plug too Got smoke coming out of oil filler After loads of research Iam pointing to the breather Whats your thoughts Also please provide part number 2008 lci 535 Please help
Hi mate I’ve got a 530d 2005 218bhp, my car smokes on idle even when it’s warm, also black smokes high in the Rev range when accelerating quite bad, I’ve had the following below changed New thermostats BOSCH MAF turbo boost seal DPF delete Decat Remap Swirlflap blank When mapping was showing injector 2 was lower percentage than the others, do you think this could be the issue with the injector? Thanks mate 👍🏼👍🏼
Hi Pal I have a 1.5 diesel, I found oil flowing through air intake hose in to my turbo , is that normal ? if yes why and if no then what can be the reason ? please advise as you said in the video that turbo needs oil flow
I just changed mine completely but car still goes into limp mode over 2500 rpm's and start spilling oil out the oil filling cap and start smoking grayish smoke...do you perhaps know wht can be the cause?
Forgot to mention car is mapped but had it detuned to a stage 1 map to see if that will help...dpf has been deleted but dpf warning light keeps coming on after about 10minutes of starting the car
that remap is your exact problem if im honest with you its ONLY PEOPLE with remapped diesels that come on here with problems immediately someone says they have problem with there diesel I ask is it remapped straight up yes well that's your problem right there if your not happy with the power without a remap go for a 550i or 530i why remap most people do this as they cant afford petrol and want something quick and cheap me on the other hand I can have both expense is nothing for me I don't even look when I fill up my car
Yesterday after driving 200 miles with no smoke suddenly started burning oil. I'm hoping it's this. My car has done 211,000 miles so I'm hoping it's not the turbos or valve guides😒
Its definitely this, I've just changed mine to the vortex and its stopped the blue smoke, has now got power on low end of turbo and its stopped me from destroying it.
Just change the loo roll element every oil change, I got the new type fitted and 40k miles and 8 years later it was blocked oil everywhere air filter , intake hose etc…
I have the new type on an lci 535d e60. Problem is there is a lot of oil inside the intercooler and from what i read is because the new type doesnt filter the oil and sends it inside the air pipes. How do I fix the problem? Its driving me crazy already
Hi mate, brilliant video, love it m your content. I blew my turbo a month and and have installed a new one now. I used to get a lot of smoke and changed the vortex breather. I still get a lot of white smoke, when I take the oil filler cap off or dipstick out, the white smoke is pretty strong. Do you have any suggestions, do you think there could be a blockage deeper in the system, or my worst theory of a warn piston ring. But not sure if that cause instant white smoke straight out the engine? Look forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestion. Thanks mate
hi there. I have the same problem. I replace the ccv tiwce but oil still gets through. As a workaround I have disconnected the pipe that goes to intercooler(right before the turbo) to prevent oil getting into air system. I collect the oil in 'oil catch can' but is very annoying.Theres a lot of oil dropping out to the streets. Im driving with 3L oil in the trunk...I suspect broken valve gasket or vaccum leak ...still researching for a solution
Is this the same thing for a E92 M57 335D - “Crankcase Breather Valve BMW 335D 535D E90 E91 E92 OE 11127809512 Febi 100133 “ I have a lot of smoke, turbos replaced 4 years ago.
Great video mate thanks. I have a problem with my 320d M47 1999 E46, after I changed fuel filter bosch brand and it started to smoke too much and no power after 2000 rpm. I have been to a professional bosch car service and said to me a vp44 pump problem. Low pressure. , 😁 but for two days she runs well but it can't go faster than 130 km/h. Little bit smoke comes from exhaust manifold. Boss, Any suggestions?
If your having blow by mate.... has your car been remapped or was remapped that’s the only time blow by happens it doesn’t happen if the car is standard and I would not advise a catch can in my ownership of Diesel engines I have never had problems with blow by I don’t know if that’s just me as mine was all low mileage 70k and 90k to be precise have you also got the old style breather system the diaphragm may be ruptured hence causing blow by that is usually signs of to much pressure on the crankcase usually REMAPPED OR BEEN REMAPPED
@@BMWDoctor remapped from previous owner tho looking it back to standard..not much blow by..not enough to lift the oil cap when unscrewed..put new vortex in, did oil change and all filters and did glow plugs 2 days ago along with module..runs alot better but noticed oil on few of the old plugs..had fault for all 6 until changed them
Ian Sonny Black there your answer is there mate it has been remapped before your ownership and clearly the last owner probably lacked maintenance also you don’t know how they treated it these cars if left un remapped are not worth the hype they are very very slow as standard hence why I went back to petrol mate from time people are having to remap them it shows mate these cars ain’t worth the paper there on as I don’t know anybody who has told me they like a standard diesel bmw but I know lots of petrol owners that wouldn’t and won’t dream of remapping there petrols no need to be honest mate if your keeping it original go to a petrol they are much much much better on power then the 530d trust me 530i n52 is a rocket same as n53
mate you wont regret it trust me I hope you pass mate you know how strict the rules are on diesel now hence why I wont own one ever again I like them yes but why own it when I can drive it and give it back trust me mate you wont regret it make sure its 530i though mate 258bhp not 525i not worth it for no gains at least my videos will have relevance for you mate swell as this will probably be the last and only car on my channel mate going back to petrol as you can see my views on diesel are NOTHING like the petrol ones believe me petrol is better I have had them all and I wouldnt go back to diesel all them emission problems started on e60 and have only got worse and worse to lower pollution forget that if its diesel MOT tester will find ANY reason to fail it if its petrol there ok if it fails emissions BUT HELLLLLLL NO ON A DIESEL
Dude your videos must've saved a large amount of BMW engines from destroying themselves, I'm glad I stumbled on it otherwise mine was scrap yard. Now shes sat outside with a new MOT and with the two broken rear springs being replaced (no I didn't have any idea they were broke, ride height and stability of car weren't affected?!) shes a beast to drive again. Must admit the E39 is too hard to let go! Could I ask one thing mate? After getting car back from garage my speakers aren't working, there doesn't appear to be an amp in the boot where the disc player is. Could it be elsewhere in the car? yes I have aftermarket head unit but its got the right harness for steering wheel etc and has worked flawlessly for four years. I'm stumped as the fuses are fine, speakers are connected and obviously were disconnected during springs being replaced. Any help much appreciated.
Yeah thank you man, I will contact them. Another Question, in your other Video about M57 you say put Injector Cleaner in the Diesel Filter, but why not in normal Tank? And I also want to put Engine Clean before Oil change but can it be Bad for the Turbo? You know when big flake of old oil or something goes to the small oil hole to turbo. I hope you understand it 😂👍
Hello, is this revised version available for e39 520d m47? I always change it when I change the oil along with all other filters but I want to fit in the revised version...
Great video mate! Ive recently just landed a cheap 2006 525d manual with 205,000 miles! what would your advice be to look out for? Ive removed the swirl flaps, egr and dpf and had it mapped and gave it a service. Seems to be running okay for now but is there anything to look out for? Have you had many timing chain failures on the m57? Cheers! Ed
mate timing chains are a common common issue and they do fail mate on these engines but usually only if remapped and there a big big job as there on the back of the engine on these mate
BMW Doctor hey mate! Thanks for the reply! I must say my car is the 525d m57 6 cylinder 177bhp im sure its only the m47 4 cylinder that is at the back isnt it? Cheers Ed
Hi dean I've just changed this breather but my car already had been changed from the loo roll type but without an insert so once I changed it with the new one I got smoke coming out the oil filler cap , could you explain what this means and what I should do please
just replaced it on my 330d, i have a question though, when i removed the old one, it didnt have any filter in it? just the housing. I have no idea for how long was it like that or why, but could it have caused damage?
Great video... Would this be the same for a 2008 320d (177bhp) it's smokey on start up a big Big puff of white smoke.. Also I have to reset clock all the time. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated 👍 Jay
Can this be the problem that my e60 smokes black and gets increased emissions error ? This is the only filter that I did not change. I have new air filter oil and diesel filter changed.

So essentially this is a Oil Catch Can ? Part Numbers would be greatly appreciated
Simply, ABSOLUTE AWESOME 👌. Thank you for sharing.
one question i hace a 2007 e60 525 lci in my car is nothing inside do i have put this vortex inside or i dont need it?
Any chance you can provide the part number for the new type breather? It looks like an easy job to DIY and very beneficial for the engine, I am definitely going to do this!

I've opened this up to find nothing inside, old style, no loo roll, and completely dry, not sure if this is good or bad?
Is this something i should do before any problems? The car is e91 330d
Lmao..all good
My M57 engine don't have this in the parts diagram. Did they change the valve covers on newer M57s? Like for the E70 X5 35d?
yours is m57n2 from factory without oil separator. but bmw advice to install it if you see increase in oil consumption
Yesterday after driving 200 miles with no smoke suddenly started burning oil. I'm hoping it's this. My car has done 211,000 miles so I'm hoping it's not the turbos or valve guides😒
my friend it will sure be this take my word
Its definitely this, I've just changed mine to the vortex and its stopped the blue smoke, has now got power on low end of turbo and its stopped me from destroying it.
Hi i have been change Crankcase Breather Valve but oil still come from Breather Valve, do you know have any problem?
I bought a M57, checked this part it didn1t have the filter at all. It has a place for it (older type) but was without the round filter
Ive just checked mine and same situation
Did you fit an aftermarket vortex? or was it an original bmw one?, I phoned bmw up and they told me that they only sell the housing with no filter.
Would this part be the same for my e90 320d 2006?
Can I ask you something? I’ve had a timing chain snap on my 07 plate E70 m57 3.0d. Would a E53 m57 engine fit in the car. Thanks for yr time
Hi Doc! Can the revised breathers fail to? I have a bi-turbo M57 286 hp. It’s a 2007 E83. Blue smoke 💨 with strong smell kills me.
Is this the same thing for a E92 M57 335D - “Crankcase Breather Valve BMW 335D 535D E90 E91 E92 OE 11127809512 Febi 100133 “
I have a lot of smoke, turbos replaced 4 years ago.
Does the new vortex breather need to be oem? Or will more or less any new style do?
Great video mate thanks.
I have a problem with my 320d M47 1999 E46, after I changed fuel filter bosch brand and it started to smoke too much and no power after 2000 rpm. I have been to a professional bosch car service and said to me a vp44 pump problem. Low pressure.
, 😁 but for two days she runs well but it can't go faster than 130 km/h. Little bit smoke comes from exhaust manifold.
Boss, Any suggestions?
My ccv also is same and old and never changed. I checked.
Hi mine doesn’t have either of what you used in the video mine is completely empty is this okay?
I know you commented a long time ago but mine was exactly the same. No filter or vortex type just empty.
Hi mate iv got a 6 series bmw 07 plate my he’d light as stop working hi -low beam it’s dead I’m thinking the ballast has failed any ideas
What’s the part number please for the newer type?
Thoughts in fitting an oil catch can? Would that help stop excess oil getting into the engine..(egr and dpf deleted)..and help with blow by?
@@BMWDoctor up for Mot tomorrow..once get a full years ticket on it thinking of changing.. petrol might be worth a try . something different
mate you wont regret it trust me I hope you pass mate you know how strict the rules are on diesel now hence why I wont own one ever again I like them yes but why own it when I can drive it and give it back trust me mate you wont regret it make sure its 530i though mate 258bhp not 525i not worth it for no gains at least my videos will have relevance for you mate swell as this will probably be the last and only car on my channel mate going back to petrol as you can see my views on diesel are NOTHING like the petrol ones believe me petrol is better I have had them all and I wouldnt go back to diesel all them emission problems started on e60 and have only got worse and worse to lower pollution forget that if its diesel MOT tester will find ANY reason to fail it if its petrol there ok if it fails emissions BUT HELLLLLLL NO ON A DIESEL
Hello dean could this be the course of my turbo whistle or could it be due to having a blocked dpf?
Bro u r the man
Will this vortex type fit the M57N2 if not can you give me the part number Cheer Doc
I just purchased the new vortex type breather but it didn't come with a housing can i use the housing from the loo roll version?
I do not believe you can you can try but if not I would order the new housing aswel
Yes you can, just done that.
Any help much appreciated.
mate the BM54 module common fault all speakers go on them its a common common problem
Hi very good video ...I have a BMW X5 e70 3.d would the new filter type fit ...Thanks in advance
Yes it will mate you have M57 so this will for yours aswell
BMW Doctor Hello again .Looking to find what grade of oil to use 0w30 fully sec....or .....?????? It’s a 2007 E70 3D ..Thanks again270,000 km on it
Hi thanks for the good Video, but one question, what can the E39 Drivers with M57 do? Is there also a new Vortex for us?
You would need to ask a E39 guy who owns M57 I did own this car but got rid
I’m sure mate the USA guys will be able to help you mate
Yeah thank you man, I will contact them.
Another Question, in your other Video about M57 you say put Injector Cleaner in the Diesel Filter, but why not in normal Tank?
And I also want to put Engine Clean before Oil change but can it be Bad for the Turbo? You know when big flake of old oil or something goes to the small oil hole to turbo.
I hope you understand it 😂👍
Mate I’m not very good with diesel
Person who owns this channel is away we are now taking over
Does this same thing work for e46 330d
I don’t see anything like that in my engine bay of my 2006 e92 335d, do I have one?
very good again, but on my 35d 2006, this separator looks different altogether from the top...
Is this the same as the CCV (crankcase ventilation)?
Hello, is this revised version available for e39 520d m47? I always change it when I change the oil along with all other filters but I want to fit in the revised version...
I have the bmw x3 2.0d is the vortex the same as the 3.0d bmw x3 as can't find this for my 2006 model.
Cheers
Ed
I know old comment but do you still have the car? How’s it been?
Would you say this sounds like my problem the little bursts of burning oil uphill?
that will probably be your problem mate
@@BMWDoctor Nice1 I'll check it in morning.
Did this solve your problem
They never update you.@@Kevbaddis246
Hi dean I've just changed this breather but my car already had been changed from the loo roll type but without an insert so once I changed it with the new one I got smoke coming out the oil filler cap , could you explain what this means and what I should do please
update??
@@gertryberty586 maybe too late but isn't it supposed to vapour a bit on high temps?
How much is the new style vortex breather and is there a link for it?
Does it causes same effect on bmw e90 320d 163hp
do x5 e70 need to upgrade their vortex breather also? they have same engine m57 also
just replaced it on my 330d, i have a question though, when i removed the old one, it didnt have any filter in it? just the housing. I have no idea for how long was it like that or why, but could it have caused damage?
because your engine is m57n2 i guess and it doesnt have filtering element from factory
Would this fit my 335d e92 ? do you have link for good quality verson
Hi guys
My m47 started smoking blue on cold start after I had the breather replaced (still the old version tho)
Any ideas?
Great video... Would this be the same for a 2008 320d (177bhp) it's smokey on start up a big Big puff of white smoke.. Also I have to reset clock all the time. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated 👍
Jay
Any luck with that?
The small o ring how are you suppose to put it in
hi can you tell me what size is the Allen tool thank you
Can this be the problem that my e60 smokes black and gets increased emissions error ? This is the only filter that I did not change. I have new air filter oil and diesel filter changed.
Check your egr valve
I've changed mine to the newer one and it still smoking from the exhaust
Whats the part number of the new Breather?
Is this common fault on a bmw 330d m57 2008
One youtuber said it's too wet inside (that's not good), this youtuber says it's too dry (that's not good).
I'm like wtf
Makes me wish I just didn't have a car lol
What happens if it does rupture can it cover your engine in oil
Yes and pop your valve cover and also destroy your turbos
