  • Here we are in Killybegs harbour in County Donegal. It’s located at the end of a very deep Fjord like inlet, making it one of the most perfectly sheltered deep water harbours in Ireland.
A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.

Believe it or not the Girona of the Spanish Armada moored here in 1588, so that gives you some idea of the ports long and exotic history.
The mackerel and herrings landed here are often exported as far as Nigeria and Japan. It also exports prawns and Lobster to mainland Europe.
…and this explains why such a massive fleet of large fishing vessels is seen in this video. It’s considered Ireland’s leading Fishing port. Consequently, there’s now apparently a community of European fishing families that consider Killybegs there home.
The port can cater for vessels of up to 300 metres in length and 40,000 tonnes dead weight.
Obviously the harbour is used to land fish, but it also deals in large freight and containers and other general cargo - it even accepts large cruising vessels. I can’t really imaging large groups of tourists disembarking in such a rural part of Ireland - but I guess it happens.
Actually, while the town’s primary industry is centred around its port, it also has a thriving tourist industry. Killybegs is located amid some of Donegal’s most scenic areas and there are many fantastic beaches and incredible coastal areas close by - some of which can be seen in other Naked Ireland videos. Check out our Fintra Beach or Sliabh League cliffs films for example.
But the harbour is certainly a great place to come and see - watch the ships come in and out and appreciate the buzz around the town.

Killybegs is a great place, memories from early days and more recently, though those boats are always impressive. Good fish and chips too👍😊

I didn’t sample the fish and chips when I was there - that was a mistake I think! Thanks for taking a look at the video.

What a lovely place. I love how in Ireland you can get this close to ships, here in Uk no chance and docks closed to the public. Many a happy hour I spent in Wexford and Duncannon looking at the fishing boats close up. PS that's a hint for Duncannon video hahahahaha.

@@nakedireland Yes very hard work for a young 16 year old 🙂but I loved it and it was very rewarding. I spent many months training at the BIM Fishery College in Greencastle Co Donegal before I went to Sea. So I was trained well and prepared in all aspects of seamanship and survival at sea
