- The Trawler 'Sharelga' sinks near the Kish Lighthouse when a submarine got caught in its nets.
The 70-foot trawler ’Sharelga was about 35 miles north east of the Kish Lighthouse when it was dragged by a submarine. The trawler owned by the McEvoy family from Clogherhead had its fishing nets out when fishermen on other vessels say,
It was suddenly dragged backwards at high speed. After being towed for about two miles, the boat overturned and sank.
Nobody was injured as the five crewmen were picked up by two other trawlers and taken to Clogherhead. The submarine has yet to be identified.
Ministry of Defence officials in Britain say it wasn’t one of theirs.
At Clogherhead Pat Connolly, skipper on the rescue trawler, the Supreme spoke to RTÉ News.
Sharelga crew members Mick Kelly and Noel Kirwin describe the incident but skipper Raymond McEvoy was too shocked to be interviewed.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 18 April 1982. The reporters are Kieron Wood and Brendan O’Brien.
It’s was the British submarine HMS Porpoise that sank the Irish fishing trawler. The British navy eventually claimed responsibility and paid the owners of the Sharelga an undisclosed sum.
Marc Davis, thank you for this information.
In 1982, the crew of the Sharegla, a 100-tonne Irish vessel, escaped injury when the vessel capsized and sank after it was dragged backwards for about two miles by the Royal Navy diesel submarine, HMS Porpoise, after becoming entangled in its nets.
Yes, and they lied at first, claiming it wasn't them. It was an accident but they damn well knew and lied about it.
Keep that in mind next time you hear of our military claiming they're not responsible for an attack that killed dozens of civilians in some foreign country. Our "leaders" are far from the benevolent men and women most people assume they are. Lying is par for the course.
Wow thats actually crazy glad that man got paid like
It's got Uncle Albert written all over it
There was always speculation that a similar incident with a submarine off the donegal coast was responsible for the total disappearance of the fishing trawler Carrickatine and its six crew in November 1995
What was the weather off Donegal that time
@@michaeloconnor9809 As far as I can recall the weather conditions was pretty normal. As far as I know the only item the search parties found was a butane bottle that may or may not have being from the vessel. It’s wreak or wreckage was never discovered. It has always been a mystery in the same vein as maylasian airlines flight 370. It was a shocking and dreadful tragedy for the families and the victims of this
The very same Submarine, (HMS Porpoise) got tangled in the nets of a French Trawler in 1969.. HMS Porpoise also collided with an Aircraft Carrier in 1963 while leaving Portsmouth harbour.. Then this incident in 1982. All from the same Sub.. How many Subs have caused vessels to sink while at sea and it’s been kept secret?. Even with all today’s radar, sonar and GPS technology it still happens.. In 2019 a Royal Navy Sub narrowly missed a passenger ferry in the Irish Sea.. In 2020 a Royal Navy Sub narrowly missed a passenger ferry in the North Channel. And that’s just the ones I remember hearing about.. British, American and Russian Subs have been prowling our waters for decades playing their little “War Games”. There are numerous reports of incidents with Subs but when there are casualties then these “BIG POWERS” go to extraordinary lengths to cover it up… Look up the MS Estonia 1994.
Most of these incidences were accidents. The Estonia however...
@JohnMcMahon The MS Estonia in effect sank itself. It failed to properly secure its bow doors, took on water which flooded the car deck and capsized. A combination of a poor ship design and a careless crew, plus bad weather did for her.
@@stevebarlow3154 The doors were secure until she struck something. A large number of passengers onboard were Swedish policemen. The ship's firefighting parties were mobilised to deal with an incident in the car deck.
@@Brecconable It seems that there were loud noises coming from the bow doors which were investigated but nothing found. When the wreck of the Estonia was examined a large hole was found near the bow, however the Swedish government could not find any evidence of a collision with any object, whether a submarine or shipping container. The RoRo design which lead to the vessel becoming unstable with just a few inches of water on the car deck was probably the main cause of this tragic accident in which nearly 1,000 people lost their lives. The only good thing to come from this disaster is, just like the Titanic, a big improvement in safety equipment, ship designs and other things relating to safety at sea.
1:37 looks like a young Sean McGinley
Even when it was "Unknown" it was known very well ffs
Go on...
@@MeChoonChannel Go on what? Do you still not know?
@@MeChoonChannel Royal Navy.
@@barra6709 HMS Porpoise to be precise
@@stevekildare4053 Thanks, I didn't know that.
Wow, the man loses his boat and livelihood and could have lost his life and O’ Brien calls it an ‘adventure’.
Sure you know the brits they will blame jaws anything bar the truth
There were a couple of incidents of this, a fishing boat from Holyhead (opposite side of the Irish sea) vanished without a trace sometime in the mid-late 80's.
it happend off ardglass northern ireland a few years back but it was meant to have been a russian sub this time
Is clogherhead like it use to be 😂Fabulous place😂, great people
Uso
Look at the quiet rage on the face of the fisherman in the thumbnail. His words only tell a fraction of the story.
See alot of familiar faces in this Video
Definitely wasn't one of our Submarines...
Irish subs ☸️have the ability to go into other dimensions and suddenly appear again....cutting edge technology that the aliens 👾 want!!
The reporters attire shocked me the most.
Aquaman
It was Godzilla
Thank you for sharing the footage. ✨🦀
It was obviously a megalodon, or sutin.
Maybe it was a alien, or sutin

Fergie Mcevoy what a story and its true
It' took a brave person to question the Brits in 1982.
The world’s getting it’s revenge now though. We Brits were even tricked into voting for our own demise 😀
Im fair nosey about the outcome, do anyone know what it turned out to be?
@James thank you!
@James Typical lying Bearla then.
@James thanks James, very interesting, you could tell the fisherman knew what they werw talking about, they looked pretty shook
They imagined it 😂
A whale))
It was a British submarine, the HMS Porpoise. The only whale in this story is the "whale of a tale" told by the the British government. In other words they're liars. The fishermen saw right through it.
@@sanyopoweraid1 Isnt a Porpoise a little whale? ))
