Welcome to Make My Space Work - a series where Shopify, in partnership with home decor expert Alexandra Gater, gift entrepreneurs with makeovers to make their spaces more functional and beautiful.
Would you find working in a confined space with your desk just inches away from your bed effective? This was the dilemma social entrepreneur Kim Kirton found herself in. She literally had no separation between her work and rest spaces. She found that her 9-to-5 and 5-to-9 were blending into one. In this episode, Kim asks for Alexandra Gater's help to create some division between her work and life. This is an extra challenging feat since Kim shares her apartment with two roommates. However, Alexandra has a clever idea to give Kim the space she desires that involves ditching the bedroom office all together. How will ALexandra solve Kim's cramped work set up? Watch the episode to find out!

I love this light fixture ... just not in this room ... it blocks view of the beautiful back wall.
Yeah i agreed with you. The back wall should be the highlight
This is exactly what I thought.
A) you are the cutest thing ever! B) when you trimmed the lamp it made my entire life (saw it on your behind the scenes video) c) Putting a collage up with cutesy tape is genius and TOTALLY gives it a scrapbook vibe! You are a genius! That’s it, that’s the post. 💕
Make My Space Work 🥰 Always
What a compliment, thank you for the lovely note!
@@AlexandraGater 💛
As long as Kim likes the light fixture no one else's opinion matters, but I have to be honest and say I am not a fan.
I love the light fixture--especially when I work at night!! Super cozy vibes. Thank you again Alexandra, we love it so much.
Kim Kirton that's awesome! I would have to give a light fixture like that a name. Haha
When I first saw the light fixture I didn't like it but at the reveal it looked much better.
How about "It"? For Cousin Itt from The Addams Family show?
Me either, I'm not a fan too.
I love the lamp - this is a space for creatives, not corporate/banker/lawyer types (or maybe it should be). Very nice space.
I would love to see how the bedroom looks like now.
Me too!
@@toriam15 I thought that we will be have two space makeover!!!
Me too!!!
Yes yes! We need that bedroom makeover too at Alexandra’s original channel!
So many people want to see the bedroom! Maybe when I can start shooting makeovers again! This is such a good idea!
I like the light fixture, but not in that space, at least not the office half of the space. It looks like it belongs in a beach hut and it blocks all the stuff in the background. I think it would be nice on the living side of the space. Either way, great transformation!
I don't love the light fixture, personally, but I like the idea of a more textural light in this design. It adds interest but is still neutral.
Awe, I really wanted to see the bedroom too. I was like oohhh we are getting a two for one...and then we it was just the office. BUT wow the office turned out really amazing and the light had grown on me...the only part I don't like is the way the straw kind flips out at the end, but the feel of it fits the room for sure.
I think it was '2 for 1' because it is an office AND a living room area in one room. But yesss, hope Alexandra does the bedroom too! Would love to see that in another video.
@@justinelandis-hanley6963 lol, thank you for this. that makes so much sense. and yes very much still wanna see the bedroom 😂
Imma say no on the light fixture, though I’m glad you trimmed it, that did make a difference! But overall I think this room looked incredible!
Oh no, I can’t believe so many people dislike the light fixture! I absolutely LOVE it. It has serious Tulum vibes. You did an amazing job!!
I didn’t like the light fixture at first, but the more times I saw it the more it grew on me. I have to say, I’m a fan.
Love the light fixture is so avant-garde not your typical basic & standard look gives the area personality and uniqueness the straws gives me a beachy a cabana look
Apart from the light fixture, this is a great makeover. As soon as I saw the fixture, my instinct was the same as Alexandra's. Get the scissors! But also it is too long and low into the space. The scale seems off. And also, it doesn't seem like a professional touch. It is more "day at the beach" vibe. It is surprising how the contrasting trim on the windows helped the space and the white shade too and definitely covering the electrical box. Love the placement of the couch and the separation the rug gives. Love the baskets in the storage unit and how much better it looks not covered in wine bottles. Love the plants in the space and that you put her screen prints on the wall. Great job.
I love that you went in yout clients home, heard her problems and truly found a solution that works for everyone who uses the space! You're amazing.
Thanks Ash!
I really like the light fixture! It’s just so different.
I can't believe she never used that space for work before! Turned out so nice.
I rally like the light. It added an edgy vibe!!!
I love the light fixture!!! And the statement wall is *chef's kiss*
It's funny that you did a mini dance in the beginning of the video cause I do a dance *every time* I see that you uploaded!💃😄💕 loll thanks for keeping us entertained with these bombs vlogs during this quarantine time you rock💯👍👍
Possibly best makeover ever!
I love that you used her old furniture and gave it a new place. A lot of times people throw away their old stuff, while it’s still lovely.
The best makeover EVER
You’ve gotten so much better with each video, it’s such a joy to watch you work ❤️❤️
I was about to be worried abut the light fixture over heating and you immediately said how to deal with that. This looks great!!
One of the best Space fix! Excellent work Alexandra!
I know a lot of people aren't a fan of the light fixture but I kind of like it lol It reminds me of a beachy vibe and feels like she brought an outside island vibe inside. Which is a nice touch I would enjoy. Being surrounded by everyday modern and being stuck inside I would enjoy the beachy vibe!
100% agree!
I like it, I just don't know how tall Alexandra is, but it seems just a bit big for the space. I like it though.
It's nice, but I don't feel it's for this space, it's to big and it hides the nice plants.
Hard no on the lamp, otherwise, it's a great room. Very stylish. I would love to work in there
I love love it and the owner just came on and said she loved it, whitch is what really matters
I knew it was going to be a hit or miss!! I think it's fun and different and glad Kim thinks so too!
I love how this makeover turned out. The entire space looks beautiful, and I am so here for all of Alexandra's funky light fixture finds!
Woooow the most low budget but really big impact makeover. What a rearrangement... Everything flows much better... And it is much more useful
Yay, so glad you enjoyed Sara!
This is my favorite makeover of yours that I've seen so far!! I absolutely love every single part of it (especially that shaggy light fixture...so cute! 😍)
I really liked the end result. Trimming the hanging lamp shade made all the difference - I can't say I love it, but I did think it added texture to the space.
the room looks AWESOME
The hanging lamp looks like a scraggly hula skirt.. a miss for me!
To me it’s giving me straw broom teas.
I love the light!! And the art! And the plants! I learned some great tips on this episode (white washing the wood, hanging over the electrical panel, string of hearts). Nice!
Your videos always make me happy. Your enthusiasm makes me smile.🌷🌷🌷😁💜
OMG!!! Love the light fixture!!!
I love this Makeover very much ! Especially the home office area. Job well done!
Loving the hair!
omg tell me you're also doing her bedroom!
The light totally reminds me of one of Nick Cave’s sound suits. Ha! Whimsy :)
Love the space but don’t love the light fixture. I would go for a more “see through” solution that didn’t cover the beautiful hanging plants... maybe a glass or smoked glass or even a loose knotted macrame would be quiet nice. Big hugs ❤️ Julia
It turned out amazing.
Smaller light and white plant pots instead of gray. Everything else is perfect
This was one of your best makeovers, for sure. LOVED the final result, a cozy and funcional space. Well done 🧡
Awesome job, Alexandra!
I love the end look... 100 times better!! I can't say I'm a fan of the light fixture though.
I love this makeover. Well done girlie 👍👍👍. I gotta get this blinds.
I love the light fixture! Love it 😍
It's no on the lamp for me, but I love the electrical-box solution (and nearly everything else!).
I actually like the light! It’s “light” and airy and acts as a bit of a statement piece that suits the space! I probably would have chosen a rhipsalis or string of pearls for the hanging plants though as they are a brighter green and would have contrasted with the wall nicer😍
Pretty, yet when I think of working in here, I would make some changes: slide the desk to the other wall and center between the windows, then the computer screen would not be reflecting light, and puts space between wall board and desk. Also, put the couch against the back wall so it faces the desk, and raise pictures higher. This way can sit on couch and converse with her at the desk, as well as look out windows. If door opening is a problem, remove door and hang heavy (for sound proofing) upholstery fabric that is still flexible enough to pull aside when desiring an "open door".
this is probably your best one tey!
I kept feeling like I had seen this space before. Major deja vu. Then I realized it was from Alexandra's vlog... 😂 glad I'm not going crazy
Joana Guedes I kept thinking the same thing!!! So glad to see the finished room 🥰
Hahaha that's so funny!
Amazing, as usual! You have such an eye!
Love this so much. I actually have such a big office table in my bedroom and I hardly use it. I so will change that now. 👍🏻
Great job! This was a really nice makeover.
Also anyone else checking to see if Chico's shirt matches the paint
I love everything but the light... I actually like the light, but I think it hides the back wall too much. Other than that, great job!! -Lindsay
Beautiful job as always. ♥️
You smashed it out the park - really successful use of space and repurposing of objects the client already had. Love the pendant light - nice to see you using a different light instead of that IKEA one! Brava!
Thanks Zoe!
This looks really great! A wonderful job, Alexandra! Although.....I never thought I would be wishing for your usual light fixture from Ikea, (LOL) but I would def like it better than the straw one, which doesn't, IMHO, match the vibe in the rest of the room. Everything else, though, is fabulous! :) ♥
LOVE IT! Kim is so deserving of this, I look forward to the amazing things she’ll create out of this space 😍
I want to see the bedroom now
I feel like the dark color surrounding those Windows close the space in, makes it feel smaller.
I have been SEARCHING for this comment! I knew I couldn't be the only one that thought this. It definitely made the room look smaller
That dress is so close to the print you used on DIYDanie's bookshelf :)
best all of their roommates are using this space now LOL
The ceiling light looks like a giant broom waiting to catch more dust and doesn’t add life nor personality to the social entrepreneur. Notice the clue....watch how Kim didn’t say anything about that main-awkward fixture that actually hid her view of the neatly hung planters. Lighting is important. Great job on the backdrop & window frames that highlight a small space.
Great job! Love it!
It looks amazing
*You look so pretty!!!* ♥️♥️🐈 I love the makeover. I'd love to have a space like this again. Very reminiscent of the sun room at my Mom's. I'd do a Tiki/Hawaiian/WW2 theme since I'm now inspired by that lamp lol! I kept thinking I'd have to use a theme like that for the garage 😂
Looks great!!!!!
What must it be like to have a place with a completely unused room.
I love your outfits ❤️
Looks amazing! Could please tell us the paint colour you used on the accent wall, thanks.
I don’t think the light fixture itself is bad, I just don’t think it necessarily goes with the style of the rest of the room (which is great by the way!!). Overall I really did like this design though!
Not a fan of the light (not my style and that's okay!), but glad you used a different one than the ikea one AND used it to explain about how to deal with overheating. This makeover is what I come over here to watch as inspiration :) I kinda wish we knew what the budget was here, curious to know if it's feasible for me to try something similar :P. (also redemption from last week's episode!)
Fantastic! Beautiful and so functional. I love the windows. They now look like art!
Any other asian feeling a bit uncomfortable seeing the rug being stepped by shoes.....? Lol 😅😧
Btw the transformation is amazing haha love how cozy the light fixture is, how well the spaces are divided, utilized, and I love the fact that she’s Canadian, go go Canadians! 🇨🇦 💕
Love it!!
As you predicted, the light is a polarizing force. It's not my fave but I think you worked well with repurposing the items in her room. Great job.
The room looks so amazing. Clean, sharp, sophisticated, but homey as well. Love it. I don’t care for the light fixture but if she is happy, that’s all that is important. All in all, beautiful!! 💜💜
love the ideas!
Hello from France! This is probably my favorite makeover from all your videos. It is really a transformation and it turns the space into a positive workplace. I would have loved to see the transformation of the bedroom too... 😜
Best regards from Alsace, eastern France.
Marie-Hélène
So glad you loved it!
Everything looked gorgeous! But that little $4 blind was a game changer! I tried to order 2 from Ikea online (they were listed for $2.99 a piece) but they were out of stock. 🙁 I will keep an eye out for them! 😂 Thanks Alexandra!! 💕
FYI when you put it up, use command strips. Those blinds fall off after a short time.
You can find those paper shades at any DIY center. I agree with SuperLunchable that you need to use a different adhesive because they won't stay up otherwise.
They are the best!!!
Looks to me like one of those "temporary shades" they sometimes use for staging new construction etc., if you need a term for searching online.
Love your videos Alexandra!
Did you paint the baskets to match the wall or did they come in that color? (if you mentioned in the video, sorry I must have missed it)
So cool!
I like the dark window frames!
This is so perfect for everyone working at home right now!
The painted window frames were a great idea to match the accent wall. But I don't understand why you also didn't paint the window frame on the inside wall. The chandelier is too big - texture is great but the size is overwhelming the space, it looks out of balance. Nice rug choice! And the blind on the bathroom window, good choice. The space looks much more inviting but is more functional at the same time.
I actually like the lamp in this space. It’s funky and weird but it really works
Alexandra, your ideas for the space were good, but I have a serious problem with a desk right by the electric service panel. No one should be in that close proximity to one. Also, concealing the service panel is fine, but best to hang something over it by attaching to the wall so it can cover (i.e. a box or frame) instead of putting something directly on the service panel. Please know that I am a professional in the electric utility industry in the USA and I am very familiar with electric codes and clearances from electric energy sources.
Love the light fixture❤️ It definitely warmed the space with its natural element and texture! Great find!
Love it! However, where did the desktop computer go?
Lovely end results, what happened to her other items that were on top of her drinks cabinet
Me seeing Alexandra and Xico high-five: 😱😱😱 NOOOOO 😱😱😱
I personally think the light is a little too big for this room. Like, she could't see the hanging plants because the light was covering it. It's a really beautiful light tho.
I've legit had a flourecent bulb catch on fire and burn down my bathroom. More to do with the wiring and housing of the light. - that light scares me a little♡
I'm all for a super-big light shade but soz, in this instance quirky does not = good 😳 However, the rest of the room is great 👍😀
Love your style so much! Thanks for inspiring me to think outside of the box 💕 sending love from Brooklyn, NY
I love!
