Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise is a nearly perfect album, in my opinion. From front to back it’s just so polished and beautiful. Act V sounds like a true Part II to that album. The first three acts fit more into that post-hardcore envelope.
The "unease" at the end is a callback to Act II, The Bitter Suite I and II Edit: and the little piano bit at the very end is a callback to Mustard Gas on Act III
I think its pretty incredible that you say, "A little bit of mystery here." literally during the reintroduction of the character Ms. Terri from act I & II. They did such a great job with her motif lol those lyrics are about her.
You mentioned that this band must be classically trained, well Casey Crescenzo has actually released a classical album called Amour & Attrition. As for how the band records from what I understand it's really just Casey composing everything then hiring musicians to play it on the albums. For this album and the 5th I think it was the Awesome Orchestra that played. There is a band that plays live ofc, but that's just Casey singing + guitar, a second guitar player, drum, bass and keys.
I came here to literally write this exact comment basically. The acts are an actaul musical with characters. Dear Hunter would probably be it's title. A 5 act story of a boy named hunter. Funny you said the end sounded like mystery because it actaully does. That subtle smile, is the smile of ms. Terri. It's a nod to the beginning of act 2 ms. Terri and ms. leading a summer smile with winter skin. Im sure you can find it and you'll noticed right away it's the composition.
@@forafewnightsout ms. terri doesn't have anything to do with song I'm afraid The ending part you're referring to is Hunter seeing Ms. Leading for the first time after returning to the city during his night on the town
@@forafewnightsout ms. Terri is hunters mother Hunter doesn't meet Ms. Leading until after Ms. Terri dies at the beginning of Act II when he goes to the Dime for the first time
That whole ending from where you said it felt uneasy until you said they brought the tone back up is all a call back to Act2 and EVERY single time they put that little piano melody into a new song I get chills and teary eyed. I love that reoccurring melody throughout the Acts.
The Dear Hunter are awesome and somehow criminally underrated. Casey is an absolute genius and I always look forward to anything he's involved in. I can't wait for you to get to Uneven Structure - Frost/Hail. I think you'll appreciate the layers which add so much atmosphere as well as the visuals of the video too which make it just a beautiful package in my opinion.
Just found about your channel, what a nice surprise! I second the album reaction ,because there is so much behind the story/lyrics and this is reflected in the music as you noticed (these unexpected parts. Like 8:35 ,this is actually a reprise (bitter suite I ),its something tDH does a lot and in an amazing way Thanks for your video ,you wont regret exploring more this criminally underrated band
Oh hey, I wasn't at all expecting to be mentioned at the start! What a great surprise lol. Glad I had a hand in you revisiting TDH :D I may have actually suggested A Night on the Town back on your first TDH reaction, but I don't remember for sure. Either way, it was a solid pick and I'm glad someone recommended it. I'd totally be down to see you do full albums with this band at some point, should you choose to. Act I's a little short/prologue-y, but Acts II through V are all great, diverse, in-depth experiences. I'd love to hear your insights, and based off of your videos I've seen, I definitely think you'd at the very least enjoy them. (That's not to knock Act I btw, which I still think is quite good. It's just definitely setting the stage for what's to come.) Also, that tease at the end: NeO hype!
There are six people in the band proper, but Act IV, the album this song is from, was recorded with a full symphony orchestra. They commissioned Awesome Orchestra in Berkeley and recorded this album (and Act V!) with the full orchestra in the studio. Can't wait to see you react to more TDH! They're by far my favorite band.
I just discovered your channel and I love what you’re doing. You cover a lot of bands that I don’t see talked about much. You’ve even already covered some of my favorite bands, with The Dear Hunter and Between The Buried And Me in particular holding my 1 and 2 spots. Keep up the great work!
I'm glad I found your reactions through the Ants of the Sky video. You should absolutely go for album reactions when it comes to TDH. I'd say Acts IV and V have more of that larger sound (that actually does bring Polyphonic Spree to mind at times) than the first three acts, but the whole thing is awesome. As someone else mentioned their The Color Spectrum concept is also very intriguing and shows even more how diverse and rich their sound is. I also second the Gazpacho recommendation. Black Lily or Gold Star could be great songs, but I'd personally go with The Walk parts 1 and 2 together.
whole album reactions! take notes of all the motifs you hear and character themes! you should also know he's a great classical composer, went i think #1 on billboard classical for a few weeks in a row
@@CriticalReactions They sure did, someone made a 40 minute compilation of all the repeated motifs throughout the acts: ua-cam.com/video/I17haL7TOnY/v-deo.html
The one with classical composition training is Casey, the lead singer! He writes and composes basically everything by them as far as I know. The end of this song was a reference to a recurring compositional theme from other Acts.
Excellent video and insightful reaction! Thank you for taking the time to listen these bands, as I think they appreciate it too. Based on what you've been sharing in your other videos, as well as this one, I think you should check our Gazpacho- Black Lily. It's a good starting point for the band, in my opinion.
The Dear Hunter is really special, glad you’re enjoying them. I’d recommend you do Rebirth and The Old Haunt (together, they’re essentially one song). I feel like that’s one of the best introductions to them anyone could get. You should also check out The Fire (Remains), or all of Act V for that matter.
Smash 64 baseball bat for notifications and the Street Fighter 2 "Sonic Boom" sound bite for text messages. The classics just work so well for notification tones :)
100% on board with an album reaction, that's definitely the way Casey wrote all of this stuff and it's a wonderful experience listening through the whole story!
So, between Act III and Act IV, they took a break and did some side stuff. That includes Casey writing a Symphony and having it recorded by the BRNO Philharmonic in Prague. After having that experience, Casey weaved a lot more orchestral instrumentation into the sound of TDH. And actually before the symphony I don't think Casey has ever composed anything that big.
More Ne Obliviscaris? Yes please, they do have lots of great stuff. I hope revisit week can become a somewhat regular feature, just one song is rarely enough to show what many of these bands can do. :)
I've had a lot less time to dedicate to the channel since COVID hit the US in March last year. I had some big plans, including album reviews, but then I became a full time teacher since I decided to keep my daughter out of physical school. Hopefully by the end of the year I can resume my plans on expanding the channel's scope.
Prior to The Dear Hunter, Casey Crescenzo was part of a post-hardcore band called The Receiving End of Sirens He took those tendencies with him when he started The Dear Hunter This edge on his voice is noticeable throughout Acts I-III Acts I and II were released in the same year (2007) and Act III was release in 2009, but Act IV was released in 2015 During those six years Casey and the band worked on other, less hardcore, projects and his voice really smoothed out While he isn't incapable of bringing out that edge when necessary (I'd suggest We've Got A Score To Settle off the Red EP from their 2011 Color Spectrum project as a prime example of this) you won't find much of that on Acts IV and V These two parts take on a much more theatrical and classical style in presentation and instrumentation Just so you know what to expect when going into these albums
oh man, PLEASE do reactions to The Acts. It has changed my life. So many things you're saying are RIGHT ON for what the track means to the story and concepts and I'd love to know what you think of so many other tracks.
The Acts are great, Migrant is great, but The Color Spectrum is The Dear Hunter on another level in my opinion. Can't recommend it enough. Also, the "remorse" part is from The Bitter Suite, and yeah, I would say remorse would be a proper word to use.
Casey is the best rock voice I've ever heard apart from Freddie Mercury... Such musicality there it's almost unbelievable. THD has a Queen feel too with overlapping voices singing together, but their music if far much more interesting that Queen's : their compositions are all at Bohemian Rhapsody's level. The pinnacle of Progressive Rock ! Can't believe I'm gonna see them in london this fall !

I'm really curious to see how you'd react to the full version of Dr. Breacher and the Time Travel Anomaly by Others By No One.
