As a musical theatre guy, this is my favorite “musical” 5 WHOLE ACTS (an album each) It is more than music, it is a story. I love the visuals it gives my mind! Thank you for listening to it!
@@MrsRealistic it's all composed and written by the lead singer too, a story about boy from birth to death told over 5 albums. Acts I - V. This is mid Act IV
Saw them open for Coheed in ‘12. Top 3, maybe fav band ever. Have been to many live shows since, Casey and crew put on one of the best performances ever. His banter with the crowd is standup comedian level.
Thanks for taking my request!!! More people need to hear The Dear Hunter! As some have already said, this is part of several acts, and it's kind of hard to pick a good song to start with the ACT albums, but this is kind of the peak music wise with the ACT albums. They wrote and recorded Acts IV and V with an orchestra, so its more prevalent in these songs. But Acts I - III are just as good and has lots of instrumentation as well. Definitely a lot of music to listen to but the journey is so worth it! Again, thanks again for taking my request!!!
I got to see these guys play live with a full symphony orchestra about eight years ago...probably the best concert I've ever been to. As good as they sound in the studio they somehow sound even better live.
This song comes after a man comes back from war, but the reason he’s back from war is because he took the place of his half brother who’s tour was ending soon after the brother died, this song shows him going on a night on the town with his “friends” who in reality are strangers to him, and evading their questions that he doesn’t know the answer to when he sees his past lover, their breakup was the reason he went off to war in the first place
@@MrsRealistic Some more details about the structure: Act I - Hunter (the main character) is born, and we see his relationship with his mother. She dies when he is very young and he moves to the city. Act II - In the city, Hunter finds the sort of central social gathering place. The Church (and the Dime, which is a brothel run by the Priest). There he meets one of the women of The Dim, Ms. Leading and falls in love. Things ... don't go well for the naive Hunter. Nor Ms. Leading. Hunter resolves to join the Army and fight in WWI. Act III - Hunter fights in WWI. MANY things happen and many discoveries are had. As OP says, he returns by pretending to be his dead half brother, and assumes his life in the city. Act IV - Hunter tries to navigate life as another person. He gets addicted to opium. Nonetheless, he starts to rise in social standing. Act V - Hunter, now a respectable member of society, resolves to make the city better by taking on the Priest. This too doesn't end well for Hunter or anybody close to him.
The Dear Hunter went from being a band I'd never heard of to a band I loved and whose extensive discography I owned the entirety of in the space of a few months. Brilliant and creative songwriting and a wonderful take on prog rock.
this was the first song i heard by the dear hunter back in 2015 and for the past nearly 10 years now, theyve been my favorite band. this is still one of my favorite songs of theirs. its a compositional masterpiece. glad you enjoyed it! this video reminded me of discovering this song for the first time. explore the rest of their Acts albums. and their newest - antimai - such an incredible shift in their tonality with more of a scifi setting while still maintaining the soul and compositional complexity, if not pushing that even further. casey and co. continue to blow me away and ill always be able to come back and listen to their work. if you want to hear another incredible track check out Ring 5 - Middle Class off Antimai.
Always love to see more tdh reactions. They've introduced me to such a nice niche of music and (if you couldn't already guess by my current pfp) I adore their stuff so much. I can only recommend checking out some more of their "Acts" series🙏 I love that you said this at 11:33 because the five albums in the series basically tell a story in musical form. Just some small insight about this song: It's kinda hard to explain without the context of the first three albums but here it is. This song specifically is about the main character and - as the title suggests - about his night in a city he had left behind many years ago. He returns to the city, spends a night there, meets old acquaintances and recalls his experiences from the First World War (The entire third album is about what the main character goes through in the war) I'll stop myself here but yeah this band is great😅
Been a fan since Casey broke off from The Receiving End of Sirens back in like ... 06? I only realized the fullness of what he created with this ... thing ... after Act V. It's *wild*.
This is fantastic. The artistry and lyricism on this album is A night on town must be one of the best songs yet could you review J FLA Before I Met You thx
Casey is undeniably talented, I'm a big act 1/2 guy but unfortunately I wasn't listening to a lot of a music when they moved forward because of reasons. Still got to see them with Dredg live once. I'm trying to catch up. I too feel really lost now.
This song is one song on one album of 5 albums that are all part of a bigger story. The story from Act 1-5 tells about the life of a boy from birth to death in the turn of the 19th century. Involes pimps, priests, prostitutes, war, corruption, revenge, and plenty of bad decisions and consequences of them. The Story notes for this song from genius lyrics. With the sixth track Hunter (the boy) is abducted by friends of the Son/Brother and is given a night on the town with them after returning home from war with a stolen identity. At first they accept him and say that everything is fine, but they become more suspicious when Hunter doesn’t recognizes them. So musing on the life he now leads, Hunter just embraces them and their ways to throw their suspicions off and to set himself into this life. As they celebrate, however, Hunter sees Ms. Leading working the bar at a tavern they visit... You should check out the song The Revival
This is like taking a 2 minute clip from a movie and expecting to know the entire story in that 2 minutes. This is usually the song people introduce the Acts as you get a bit of each variation of their theatrical sound. If you enjoyed it, highly recommend a deep dive starting with Act 1 and follow along with lyrics and maybe even Genius notes. Generally the Story is about the life of Hunter. A young boy naive about the world, but innocent needing to figure things out on his own. He has internal struggles with a manipulative character in the early 1900s The Pimp and the Priest which you can guess is someone of the church and a brothel.
I'm glad you picked up on the 1900s theme and are curious about the story. The story is insane. You need to listen to all the Acts as the songs mostly seemlessly blend into each other (as you heard in the end there). Believe it or not, this song PALES in comparison to many of the rest of their songs. The story and songs are incredible. One of my favorites is The Old Haunt.
🎼🦏🦏🦏🦏 .. I like them. Nice .. really cool video. I like the wind instruments .. maybe an oboe .... I hear a trumpet .. the songs builds very nice. Okay .. I am interested. 🦏🦏🦏🦏🎼

WOW! That must have been an amazing experience!

A nine minute song, eh? Well,it's part of a 'narrative whole' that - so far - lasts 5+ albums ...
i love the dear hunter, they need a million more fans fr

Really reminds me of the band Of Monsters And Men.
Also, in some parts it reminds me of The Oh Hellos.
I'll have to listen to that, I don't know if I've heard them.

I played clarinet in 8th grade... so my ears pricked up at that part... I'm not sure if that's what it was... but an oboe is certainly a possibility!
Sounded great but also doesn't know what it is about
Greetings from South Africa
