  • One of spy's many unique tools is his ability to disguise as opponents. This begs the question: what is spy's best disguise? Well, let's take a look at the different disguises and how competitive players abuse them

In comp, I'd disguise as a friendly medic and bait the enemy into some unneded sacrifice with the true medic still alive

cool idea except medics typically should have someone pocketing them if there is anyone alive + if there are teammates alive, they should be building uber/healing/buffing them. idk if i can think of any situation where that tactic would give an advantage

i've seen quite a few prem/invite HL badwater POVs where the RED spy does exactly this with dead ringer, also sometimes sniper as well, since medic and sniper are the two most important picks in HL

My comp TF2 experience is more heavily rooted in Highlander compared to 6s, and one thing I learned during my time in Highlander through teammates who played Spy is the underutilized aspect of Spy being able to inspect what weapons the player they're disguised as is using. By default, pressing B when you're holding out your Revolver, Sapper, or Knife while disguised pulls up the weapon your disguise target is using, corresponding to your disguise's primary, secondary, and melee weapon. This is most useful to check what Medi-Gun the enemy Medic is running during set-up time, but there are other applications to it as well such as checking if the enemy Soldier is running a banner or opting for Gunboats for a more roamer-like playstyle, or checking if the enemy Pyro might be using jetpack since Pyro bombs are quite common during sack waves.

In casual, dead ringing while disguised as a teammate is a good way of getting behind the enemy team.

one easy rule of thumb to follow when pretending as you're disguised is to look at your own team, but let's be honest, pretending to be an enemy is a coin flip since the game doesn't punish you for excessive spy-checking anyways

this is actually an interesting balancing idea: if tf2 ever had friendly-fire, how would that affect spy-checking?

It would make Spy will always get that one kill because people will be too afraid to check teammates as risk is too great.

Not so much related to spies, but people would hate pyro, soldier, and demoman.

I would not say 6s is stale. Its like an olympic sport. Swimming could be considered stale in the same logic

What do ya know, the two classes that benefit most from a 24 person lobby, Spy and Engineer, are damn near useless when you cut the amount of players in half. Almost like this game wasn’t designed to be a 6 versus 6 game. It peeves me that 6’s is _”the” “competitive”_ TF2 when it takes so much away from the game.

He is kinda right imo. The classes were designed and balanced for large servers. But its not necessarily practical or engaging for competetive to have large servers.
