  • First and foremost, if you're curious how I built my rack in the first place, check out hortonbarbell.com/build-a-diy...
I wrote this article before I started the Garage Gym DIY youtube channel, so while there is unfortunately no video, the article does include pictures, materials and step by step instructions on how I built a Squat Rack for less than $60.
For this video, I discuss the 3 mistakes that I would fix if I started this project all over again. One is on the build itself (the worst one), one is on materials used and the final one is more of a dimensions preference.
Even with those mistakes though, this rack has been a beast for me over the past year. I generally do some form of squatting twice a week and I also use the rack for overhead pressing movements. I may eventually move onto a steel rack at some point, but I have absolutely got my money's worth out of this rack and then some.

Even if your cuts had been square a not perfectly level floor could have got you.
I suspect even with some cracking it will be safe as the structure is still largely intact.
Wood could have cracked some independent of what you describe.
In buildings you see cracks in beams and posts all the time.
    I would use beefier brackets.
I'd put a lip at edge so bar can't roll off.
I like your build, it's simplicity is refreshing.

      Thanks Michael!
I appreciate the kind words. Obviously it sounds like you have a lot more knowledge in the area than I do. All I can say is that it served me well for a year and a half.
As far as a lip goes, I thought I might need something in that regard as well, but I honestly had ZERO issues with the bar wanting to roll on the rack. It never moved at all - not sure if it’s cause of the increased surface area cause of the width of the 4x4 or maybe I just got lucky. Either way, it was never a problem.

      @@hortonbarbell Thanks for the reply.
I went to your website and saw you moved on.
With square cuts and bigger braces I think we both think this works.
Maybe some 12x12 ply gussets at each corner too.
And I might build build a structure in front as a fixed safety and maybe with blocking bench too. Still less 4x4 than full cages so many build. Also those require a lot of serious drilling and with pipe and all it gets close to the cheapest power racks.
So I found this useful and as proof of concept for what I might do later.
For you it was a good interim solution with a lot less money and time than the wood power racks I usually see. And the 4x4 can be used for other projects.
      Maybe a dip station...

I realize you moved on but this is an interesting design different than most...
