yeah, i did alot of research on how to most humanly put them under and this seems to be the over all agreement . and plus it keeps them fresh till i want to use them .
ive done this with the soft shell ones but never the hard shell, but are you suggesting it works the same with the hard shell? if so i can defiantly give it a try :)
@LostCoastLiving, I've read that they are optimal for deep frying when freshly molted (shell is thinner). There's a lot of strategizing to figure that out, tho. I don't know the specifics but I looked into it, on UA-cam.
That freezing idea is great. They remind me of the blue crabs we used to catch in Rhode Island.

Was wondering if we should clean them before cooking to get rid of the gills and toxins?
You definitely could if you would like to. It would always be a good idea, especially if there are high numbers of toxins in your area.
You can clean them and deep fry them.
Choose a Chris and then you can eat the whole thing completely.
