Turns warehouse into dream home with underground living + Roman bath 🏛️

- Ignacio Morente bought a dilapidated warehouse and, with help from family and friends, he built his dream home, complete with an underground living space and a buried Roman bath, creating a bioclimatic haven for days that are either too hot or cold. He had come to Barcelona as a teen playing semi-pro tennis, but an injury had caused him to pivot to architecture.
ignacio's goal was to create a unique home blending ancient and contemporary aspects in a timeless way. He had noticed a derelict century-old warehouse in the Barcelona-area town where he had been training for tennis, so he decided to transform it into a 4-level oasis home that blends open space and a concealed underground space (bathroom, bedroom, living room, storage & laundry) while preserving as much as possible of the old granary.
Ignacio is still finishing the place he now calls home with the help of his wife, Emma Romero, hoping to add more elements as everyday use tells them what they need and plants take over the planters, both indoors and in the back-right where the low windows open to the Roman-style bath underneath the floor level.
With a constrained budget, the kitchen and downstairs (what they need for everyday living) became their priority during the first stage of their project. The upper levels are still a work in progress -they want to find out what they need before cramping up the spaces with things they don't need or wouldn't be used.
The underground living space has already become their bioclimatic refuge for days that are either very hot or cold, and friends celebrate their boldness when they visit.

Your channel is UA-cam gold. Best one for like 20 years. Thanks for all your hard work over the years.
I completely agree.
After years and so many clips I am ennoyed by her comments during filming. They neither show a professional perspective on the presented projects - "I like this window!" - nor is there any development in interviews or towards knewledge in tech and materials. Are these clips of an "architectural junkee"? Maybe for other junkees? Of one who does find interesting projects but stays on the surface, "How nice!"
He mixed the old and the new as seamlessly as he mixes English and Spanish :)
:D
Enhorabuena.... fantástico proyecto!
Is that a criticism of the building?
@@Brian-jv8iy no, just a little play on words
If I ever won the lottery, I would ask this gentleman to design my house. His attention to detail and his passion for his art are so evident. I am so impressed with the hard work he put into this dream space. We built two cabins from scratch, and I don't think as much work went into them as there is in this place. What a vision he had. I gasped out loud when the doors first opened. This home is amazing!
Big fan of this project; congrats to home owners!!
Very impressed with how he spent much time in the structure getting acquainted in the atmosphere before beginning this project. Retaining original character while creating his own space. As an artistic his future will be very promising and rewarding.
The way Kirsten can find these beacons of light and hope simply amazes me.Her steadfast pursuit to share these dreams of these people is very uplifting and healing in many ways.
This truly is a piece of art. Love it.
I agree. And he may do art showings in the main space. He could definitely make that space work during the day for a more public function since all residential clues are hidden.
This man is not only a creative marvel, but an honest hard worker as well. Much respect.👏👏 Thank you for sharing this gem home.
Elegant spaces and great textures!
Enjoyed the code switching! When someone doesn't completely master a second language and is enthusiastic about the conversation flip flopping languages is totally natural. Oh, BTW the building and its rehab were things to be excited about.
Absolutely, like when Kamala Harris was is France and she flipped flopped between English and French.
Yeah but here it was full of misunderstandings. I think flip flopping is useless, creates confusion, here I guess it was out of necessity, as seen with unrelated answers to questions, but some people force it, thinking it helps, but it does not.
Great episode. I love this home. Congratulations to this gentleman for creating such a beautiful space.
I can actually see myself living here! This is such a clear example of what he said "You have to embrace imperfection" (21:14). He maximized what he could with the budget they had. The 2 showers, the sink, the Roman bath, the 2 toilet, the windows, the one light when you're seated on the entryway toilet... everything are beautifully done!
That bathing area is too die for! I had to show it to my daughter who leans towards more modern for when she builds her home here on our land. I really want her to do it so I can walk over and use it!😂 Rhis was a beautiful, striking space, thanks for sharing.
I agree. There's something so timeless about that natural material with the sound of water. Especially when we were there on a hot summer day. It felt so good to go underground, but that space felt like stepping back in time as well (that or a modern spa).
@@kirstendirksen ❤
I agree, but how do you clean the tub if it's rough concrete? Did he seal it somehow? @@kirstendirksen
The blend of past and present and affordability is what the world needs. Beyond that, I had to deny the place being unusable for me because it's inaccessible for me. If home builders want to increase the time inhabitants live there, and to increase the value and number of potential buyers, they can do that by incorporating safety and accessibility. Even without a debilitating medical event, people age and would rather remain at home as long as possible.
@@d.e.7467 I was thinking along the same lines. I suppose if for some reason they cannot do stairs anymore whether temporarily or permanently, they would have to move a bed upstairs and just screen it off if need be. They have a bathroom and shower on the lower level.
This is like living in an exquisite sculpture - I am so impressed with the finishes, recycling, and details, and with the preservation for the neighbourhood of such a beautiful and telling piece of local history. Thanks so much for sharing.
Such a creative and beautiful house! Ignacio is very talented and I love his explanation of the history, the material used and his process for the build.
Amazing details. Usage of natural materials makes it home like despite the metal plates. Also, i like how thought out everything is. Great presentation!
I love this house! It's unconventional but still livable, simple yet elegant, old but modern. Great job!
I LOVE how you showcase people living in such unique ways. The way you highlight their individuality, the way you are curious about people, it's all very inspiring. Half the time I'm watching your videos for the homes you feature, the other half is that I enjoy the way you interview people. Thank you!
Absolutely stunning! So simple and bold with the design decisions. As a recovering architect I always struggle with bathrooms - there is no mirror, no outlets, but it works and redefines the sleeping - bathing rituals.
“Embrace the imperfections”. It really is all about how we perceive things. Truly a stunning work of art.
I’m getting that printed on a T shirt for myself. 😂
Very inspiring
Wow is right. I think this is the best thing I've ever seen.
That hinged, semi circular window is awesome
Totally ! When it’s down, it becomes whole, and highlights the beautiful brick within it.👏
Wow wow wow. This is absolutely fascinating, and he has every right to be as proud as he obviously is about this home. To have all done that with his own hands is a marvel. And what an incredible build it is. Love how he is so detailed about everything, the materials, the textures, the paint, the brick....all of it, so great, gorgeous place!
I firmly believe that buildings choose people, this is a prime example!
Wow! What a house. So beautiful!
one of the best and most tasteful, this guy is an artist and visionary
What a great space … only misses a swing 😃
Very cool in so many ways!! Love the hidden bathroom with the Roman bath style .. old exposed beams with the joinery .. love the way natural light gets inside .. even under the main floor! Beautiful arched window .. will look even more wonderful with lots of green plants growing around. A work of art / love!
I love that skylight into the basement. It helps make the sleeping space brighter. However, it does mean you have to always make your bed tidy in the morning. And make sure there's no dirty laundry on the floor. Because guests could see straight into your bedroom
Call me strange, but I like to air out our bedroom in the morning and make the bed right after, it helps me start the day; sort of a daily ritual, which feels nice when you have to go to bed at night.
Impressive, that cave-idea is something which we should learn again. It gets uncomfortably hot in northern Europe in the summers in houses which were built to trap heat.
This is so brilliant. Its my favorite house so far. I say that with every video, but this is perfect!
Es realmente una obra de amor y de arte. Le felicito y le deseo muchos años de felicidad viviendo y disfrutando de los frutos de su trabajo.
This built is brilliant in its simplicity. The man is passionate about his creation, and it is unique.
I LOVE IT! You guys find the best stuff to show on your channel and your subscribers adore you for it! ❤
The design of this house is sublime. Love the absence of railing on the stairs.
You are a perfect architect: You combine recycling with innovative creativity and frugality! You are an amazing architect and will be very successful! ❤️❤️❤️
I’m obsessed with this aesthetic. It’s futuristic but also primitive at the same time. It has this future Earth, civilizations past, Star Wars vibe. The wall color (am confused though which finish is where) brings to mind earthen ware, Venetian plaster. Love it. He says he used limestone, marble, I think I would have done something different though with the bath and shower. Glazed tile, bricks, glass, or finished cement for more color and sanitation.
What an interesting property!
This channel is wonderful.
Thank you to all involved.
For me, hes one of the most interesting people on this channel. Every single thing is thought off, he built everything himself, he has history at home. Very interesting guy
Definitivamente en Europa la arquitectura reciclada está a otro nivel.
My favorite video from your collection of stories. La casa más bonita.
I’m in awe of his skill level! The house is a genuine piece of 100 year old art. Impressive 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It does feel like art the way he's treated everything with any history. Though I think usually anything with history has a beauty that comes with age .
This house is amazing. Very minimalist. Yet has all that is needed. Love the roman bath and shower. I love a kitchen that is not totally visible. Yet it is right at the entrance. The re-use of the materials is also great. The light switches are way more advanced that what we have here in North America. Even though the property footprint is small, inside it looks huge by the lack of walls. Well done.
A true artist and craftsman. I really applaud the respect he has for the history / story of the place and traditional building methods, and his immense understanding of how to insert modern materials into an adaptive structure, and lastly his awareness of when to leave imperfections alone and when to improve upon.
I like the versatile nature of his design, the way the toilet is separate, and the skylight features even though the floor. Wonderful. Thank you.
This seems like such a simple structure, but if this video was 3 hours long I would have watched the whole thing. Absolutley fascinating how he thought of every single angle. Bueno!
This home is a work of art. Absolutely stunning
Adaptive reuse at it's finest!!
Love it!
Outstanding home!! Even the bricks are amazing art pieces.
High IQ design. His awareness of how material and light affect his perception and the ability to follow that intuitively is beautiful as an artist myself , it is very relatable how he describes his experience and reason for the design of the space, bravo
Espectacular pensamiento de diseño, felicidades!!
Wow, love this house. clever and minimalist
I bought an old garage with almost the same volumes and constraints. This is very inspirational and superbly documented. Thanks a lot for sharing such a great piece of architecture.
Most architect built homes have STRONG voices that speak volumes about the designer. They can stir much debate, in how the individual relates to the many elements and they are RARELY boring.
Wow! He’s incredibly talented! The finishes are beautiful and look like high-end custom while also looking like they’ll last forever. The cantilever tables are super cool! I would love to see this home after a couple of years of habitation and cultivation of atrium plants, etc. this is definitely one of the neatest places you’ve highlighted.
He was showing us the planters he has installed at that back wall of the house. In a year or two that back wall should be green. Will be a different view through those huge glass doors.
@@kirstendirksen it will be even more incredible than it is now, with a wall of greenery as a backdrop…you can see his vision and dedication to each space like sleeping there overnight to just feel the space😊 I think it will be hard for him to leave this place ❤️ I can’t tell you how much I admire your work. You have quality time with your whole family and you get to travel the world with them.
Genius! Bravo ! Amazing work ! We need architects of this type to build the houses of the future
You guys consistently find the most interesting projects; where creativity and personal craft result in novel, elegant solutions. Many thanks!
Ignacio wrote to us last so I suppose he found us. Though there was no furniture in the photos and it was difficult to understand it visually until we visited. Definitely a surprise when we walked in, and downstairs particularly.
THAT MAN IS REALLY SMART N PROUD OF HIS CREATION N HE SHOULD BE 😊
Beautiful simplicity
Ignacio’s home is simply MAGNIFICENT! @Kirsten Dirksen, Please do a Part 2. We would love to hear more about the ventilation, how the planters impact the design, and maybe hear about a few more projects Ignacio is working on?
I hope to visit again once some plants have grown in. I would love to see that back wall change the view from inside into something verdant. Though likely I will need to wait a couple years for that much growth.
Awesome blend of old and new
FANTASTICO - Bravo !
The attention to such detailed design and function exudes the artistry and craftsmanship that equals and presents a habitat of fine art.
Encantador
Wow im speechless, one very beautiful home. I love it.....
Fantastic house, just amazing
That little TV is hilarious in such a large space lol
They are definitely still figuring out how to use the space. Ignacio mentioned they could even use the main floor as a gallery space.
@@kirstendirksen Interesting, I wonder if he knows about the TV’s that can double as a picture frame to display art pieces.
this house is THE BEST EVER!!!
Love absolutely everything about this creation! Didn’t quite understand how sound from the 🚽 is dampened, but hey…❤
So warm and welcoming, even with the minimalist feeling.
it's playfully beautiful. gorgeous in every way
I would like to see it when it's fully decorated. The patio would be amazing for lots of plants and a raining fountain over the furnace opening. Ivy on the walls or wisteria to accent the old openings. Lights strung from side walls and lounge chairs and a small table. Maybe a feature that when light hits it at night it makes a beautiful pattern on the walls. Like light from a candle in a crystal bowl
I do find that the door over the oven is nonsensical. I would keep it open the entire time I'm using the oven then it would be in the way to go to the fridge and cabinets. Sometimes architects over think things that in the end are not practical. Maybe they don't do much cooking.
Enhorabuena al arquitecto/dueno de esa casa. Totalmente de acuerdo con esa vision de los materiales y de los espacios. Para mi entre los mejores proyectos arquitectonicos monstrados en ese canal.
Upon visiting Barcelona it gave me the same vibe as San Francisco, Ca.,blending historical, funky, modern and the palm trees! 🌴🌴🌴 My father in law , born in Spain and moved to San Francisco decided on the locations so he would never miss home! lol ❤
Wow what a cool place!
Beautiful, peaceful
What a remarkable house! Really makes me question my own life choices.
Beautiful home full of details and texture!
This is my favorite home video of all time. I would give my life savings + 10 years of labor to live here
This home is stunning.
WOW so minimalistic and beautiful
A wonderful and creative video. Thanks!
Your channel is truly spectacular and gets better and better every day, thank you so much!😍😍😍
That's so kind of you to say. I am always surprised that it still feels hard to edit stories. Sometimes, like today, I feel like I've only edited a decent interview into a mess. Though I took a break and came back and found a story there (i think). Will post it Sunday and hope it works.
@@kirstendirksenI INSIST your work is excellent, thank you! 😍😍😍
I’m speechless. a dream!!!
That place is incredible ❤
🙋♂️KIRSTEN,THANKS FOR SHARING THIS INVENTIVE CREATION ON A BUDGET 😅…CONGRATS TO THE OWNER/ ARCHITECT 😎💚💚💚
Wow, absolutely unique!
A perfect environment!!!Love it.
This guy has incredibly good taste.
❤ ❤ ❤ Best one I've seen in a long, long time. Wish i could build something like that, wow!!! LOVE the bathrooms locations & moreover the showers & hand washing sinks, what an excellent loft too. Like Mom, I'dwant to sleep there too. Seria mi habitacion en invierno y lugar de ejercicio, hermoso todo, wow! Mil gracias por compartir sus pasiones cinmigo, siempre he soñado con crear lugares así... & how perfectly beautiful to preserve as much as you did. Love it!!!
It sounds like your dream space lines up with Ignacio and Emma's. That downstairs was definitely perfect for the hot summer day we visited. I agree that preserving so much history in the space made the place feel so much richer.
Una de las soluciones mas interesantes de este canal en concepto y utilidad, espectacular reseña arquitectónica.
Absolutly beautiful and excellently thought through , bravo!
A.........MAZ.......ING!!!! Absolutely LOVE this place!!
Absolutely beautiful Love this type of design
This is a masterpiece... essential architecture
absolutely Fantastic !
Amazing, beautifully artistically created.
So interesting! Thank you!!
I LOVE this home!!!!!!!!!!!
This Is a beautiful multi layered home. I love the views and the light. I'm guessing in the winter the couch will come upstairs. And they may get some bedding for the upper most area. I can see that they live a very minimalist simple life, so it would be easy to make adjustments for the weather
They do seem very ready to adapt their space to any changes. And i you see the final shots they have already added a couch and TV to the main space. I also saw a photo of what looked like them using it as a more public art gallery space for an event. There are a lot of possibilities there, especially given how close they are to Barcelona and the center of their town.
