SUGAR Nerds.. So I get a lot of ill informed numpties saying how this is so full of Sugar, go figure? So I use 2 teaspoons of sweet condensed milk, which is about 50% Sugar, that's about a Teaspoon of Sugar to beat in with the eggs. There is enough froth here to make 2 cups of coffee, so at most, I use 1/2 a teaspoon of sugar in my cup.. I think sometimes the keyboard engages a little quicker than the brain.. So those that express "disgust" in the huge amount of sugar in this coffee? and then wonder why, I make a point of saying I don't usually like sugar in coffee, might need to get over it.. All the best.. And to the rest of us that are not fans of sugar in coffee, it's not too bad.. Enjoy ;o)
Steve
Wtf video of 3yrs before and I see your cmt hours earlier wow . Love this video . I will try it 😊

Theyre dumb 😂 saying that while they order their Starbuck grande latte w 500 cal 😂
I'm from Vietnam, and thanks to your video, I have made myself a very delicious egg coffee. Now abit of information for those keyboard "hero":
The coffee in this "egg coffee" have to be long-roasted Robusta beans: very dark and bitter with almost no taste of sour. And vietnamese coffee brewing style is quite "condensed", using 21gr of ground beans and 70ml of hot water. So when you add the egg cream on top, it's not sweet. People who are complaining about the "full of Sugar" maybe from Western countries or using Arabica beans (lighter and sourer than Robusta) or putting alot of water in their coffee. When using Arabica coffee for this drink you need to lower the amount of condensed milk and sugar.
I just wanted to say I really appreciate how you deal with the negative people watching your video. I always drink coffee black, no sugar but I really want to try this, especially since the black coffee is meant to be very dark with no tanginess and the sweetness is not as much as people see. Thank you for this video!
I like the way he talks and describe about the egg coffee. His eyes is sparkling, his voice contains so much joy
Yeah he has a great voice for UA-cam
I risked my life dodging motorbikes in Hanoi for egg coffee. Totally worth it.
everybody risking their lives every day in Vietnam just to cross the road lol haha
@@BTArnold100 that happen in saigon too?, i thought traffic problems can only be seen in ha noi
@@cuongdang3304 Bro, it's getting there in Saigon. A couple years ago it wasn't this way but with the economy picking up, everyone can pretty much afford a scooter so the roads are getting worse.
To get from Go Vap to District 1 takes about an hour sometimes. And it's only really 5-6 kilometers apart. Going from Go Vap to Bien Hoa seems to take forever.
Traffic tends to begin building up at around 3pm and stays that way till 7pm. Throughout the day though the streets are busy. But still, not as congested as Ha Noi
Edit: Lived in Saigon, My Tho, Long Thanh, Bien Hoa, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Than Hoa and Ha Noi. Traffic varies greatly depending on wealth of the region.
Stupid, just buy all the ingredients from Walmart.
@Furn I find crossing roads in Ha Noi not that hard lol. Just raise your hand and cross, bikes will go around you. You do need to avoid cars and buses tho.
guess ive been living under a rock cuz ive never heard of this till now... as a Vietnamese...
Rock lifted..
Oh my God
I think it is only popular in north of Vietnam though
It was made during a time where there was a milk shortage in Vietnam
you should try. it's soooo good...
It's said Vietnamese egg coffee is a liquid tiramisu! Thick, creamy, and flavorful, it tastes sooooo delicious. It's the one and only egg coffee in the world invented by the Vietnamese.
Thanks.
There is one more egg cofee that come from Austria named something so long I cant remember
Italians also have egg coffee
Scandinavia has an egg coffee also they say...
@@nitaliahope do you know what it's called? I lived in Italy long ago - don't remember!
The egg coffee experience was one of the real highlights of my first Hanoi trip a few months back. Made the trip really memorable for me, an espresso drinker.
Steve, if you want to keep the coffee warm, the Vietnamese often stick the cup in a bigger container with hot water that goes halfway up the outside of the cup while it is brewing. Keeps the coffee warm. :)
Yes they did that once or twice but unless the coffee and basin were hot in most cases it didn't work. The second video I did on Coffee in Hanoi, the lady put it over a T light and it was super hot, the First "worst egg coffee in Hanoi" they put it in a bowl of hot water and it was at the best Luke Warm. What do you think.. :)
Now that you mentioned it, I loved how it was served in the 2nd egg coffee video. The way it was served and the ambiance of where it was served was so awesome, too. Yep, definitely go with how the 2nd location did it. :)
Dont try that with egg coffee.
High heat will make the liquid become thicker, and the egg will be “overcooked”.
Drink egg coffee as fast as you drink an espresso.
Eau bain marie
Mine will be different I'll start with the eggs first set aside then make the coffee make sense
I watched this video this morning and went out for the ingredients today. I've just had my first cup of Vietnamese egg coffee and I'll be keeping it in my repertoire - delicious!
It's not just dark-roast, it's robusta coffee too! It has its own taste, more caffeine as well. We have about the same situation here (in Miami, FL, USA), with the very popular Cuban coffee. It's very cheap and uses a lot of Robusta coffee, so most people take it with sugar and steamed milk. So if you can't find Vietnamese coffee, you might like some Cuban coffee, or some brand of coffee with chicory in it. Before you could buy Vietnamese stuff in the store, Vietnamese people here all bought Cafe du Monde from New Orleans. It is possible to enjoy these as black filter coffee, but it's jolting and you don't want a big serving of it. Anyway, this looks delicious and fun, I'm definitely going to try it!
Great tips, thanks for sharing with us.. Steve
I drank egg coffee ever for the first time in January when I spent a month in Vietnam. I absolutely love it! Thanks for the recipe I have not had any since I got back but now I will.
Thanks Mary
The way you talk reminds me of my dear professor at university. He is such an approachable and kind-hearted man and so are you!
I drank egg coffee many times when I was stationed in Hanoi some years ago and I can tell you the egg coffee made by Vietnamese is the best.
my mum's a big fan of coffee, I might surprise her one morning, with this!
How nice of you.. :)

Love the way he explains the procedure. Hes very clear calm and precise.
An alternative to raw eggs/condensed milk is if you mix the yolks in with sugar over a double boiler (mixing in milk if needed) til you get that custard like texture. It's like how you'd do for a tiramisu.
it taste so good. I've tried it before while traveling there. oh and don't forget the Vietnamese coconut coffee ❤

Martin, that is kind of you to say, I had such a great time in Mexico and I can't wait to recreate some of the Recipes I learned whilst there, the time and location just hasn't presented itself, it will :o)
Steve
Most importantly, you need to beat eggs and condensed milk for a long time (15-30 minutes) to reduce the taste of eggs ( do it with machine). When I was a child I used to whisk eggs (only red yolk and milk) with a pinwheel and beat with my hands. It make me so tired But f * kin It's sooooo good !!
How about Vietnamese coconut coffee? I've tried it while in Vietnam, and it was as impressively delicious as its Vietnamese egg coffee cousin.
Yes, Its superb, I never had the time to film it though :o) Thanks
Tim Black im vietnamese. egg coffee use milk fresh .
That sounds delicious!!
I'm about to try coconut milk coffee ... got a little can of Aroy-D coconut milk to try putting in instead of my usual heavy whipping cream.
French Market coffee in the orange can, a "phinn" coffee maker, less than $3 at your local Viet market, I have great coffee every day and it costs me like 25c a cup, less than a dollar counting the heavy whipping cream.

My Mom use to make it when I was a child. Everyone in our family loved it. I didn't make it for long time. know, I'll make it for my Family again
The panning out on electric blender was brilliant.
I made this today. It was so good like I was amazed.
Hi Steve, I just want to say thank u so much for your recipe, because of that egg coffee helped me so much to defeat some rivals on the way of love. It helped me to get my girlfriend' heart and we are gonna get married on next August. Once again thank u so much

This is a good winter drink... and it’s just about that time in Beautiful Sydney.
I love the way you talk! It’s soothing and the recipe is more fun to make.
Well, thank you :o)
Wow. I'm from northern italy and I grew up in the 70's having the same coffee with egg. The only difference is my mother used sugar instead of condensed milk and she poured the coffee straight into the egg sugar whip. Great memories, the world just keeps getting smaller. Thank you.
I’m from the Dominican Republic and we do the same thing , it’s delicious
I know this is an older video but I appreciate it! I've always wanted to try this but didn't know it was so easy. Disclaimer: I used a regular pour over. Tip: If you don't like sweet coffee, use a cup that gives you a larger surface area. Less egg foam in each sip. So good.
My coworker is Vietnamese and he hooked me up. He got me two of the little coffee press things and he brought me back 2 pounds of coffee from Vietnam when he went back. yeah it takes time that's why I do two at a time. My goal was to make it like my favorite Vietnamese restaurant. I got it. now I need to try this one.
I’ve been using raw eggs in my protein shake for years. I’ve learned that if there is any salmonella its always on the eggshell itself. Washing your eggs before cracking them open is the best way to prevent salmonella from getting into your foods. Obviously if your cooking your eggs, then salmonella is not a problem because you’ve pretty much killed any salmonella in the cooking process.
Indeed, it's not so much in the shell as in the fecal matter left behind from Sick Chickens and Poor Handling. In some countries' like the UK, they have cleaned up egg production and the are largely safe. The world should follow suite.. Raw eggs have been eaten for centuries, if your hens are cared for, your eggs are safe. Thanks Abe, good points
If one was really worried about salmonella I'd suggest cooking them in a water bath. (Like melting chocolate for ganash)
as a vietnamese, i approved this recipe, shout out for very detail vietnamese brew instruction!!
Thanks Vân.. Steve
This may sound blasphemous, but this makes me want to do a Turkish / Vietnamese hybrid now. Gonna brew some Turkish coffee with cardamom, top with this delicious looking egg cream, and see how it goes.
Well, I'm in Turkey so maybe I could try it too.. ;o)
Coffee is super customizable and should never be limited by preparation. Go for it!
Im turkish and totally suprised of the idea , never thought hahah. Did it work ? Im curious 👀

I love Vietnamese's Egg coffee.
This is a perfectly good light breakfast in itself - can't wait to try it.
Your instruction is very easy to understand! I’m Vietnamese & I live in Saigon. This coffee style is more popular in Hanoi than Saigon. It really hard to find a coffee shop around here that serves it. So that, I’ll try it at home. Hope to have chance to visit Hanoi and try the authentic one!
Thanks, I wan to visit Saigon too ;o)
Authentic one will be cafe Giảng in Nguyễn Hữu Huân St. Look it up on Google. Always packed. Cheers!

I'm come from Vietnam. So proud of you when you choose our egg coffee. Welcome to Vietnam! I guess u gonna surprise Vietnam's food 🍜🥘☕️
Thank you.
I like coffee(with a dash of sugar and milk or cream) and I like eggnog so this is now on my list! Can't wait to try it!
Thanks for the video....
I want to learn to make Eggnog Coffee. I always sweeten my coffee with condensed milk. Thank you for your enthusiasm. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️
I've been really excited to give this a try since your first couple of videos on egg coffee. The history about the lack of milk in Vietnam that year leading to the invention of egg coffee was absolutely fascinating. Really goes to show necessity is the mother of invention.
So true, thanks for being patient, I get there eventually :)
Steve
It reminds you of Christmas because homemade eggnog is made from similar ingredients: raw egg, sugar, milk. Thanks for the video!
If you want to use the egg but still afraid of getting sick, you can cook it. This is how you would cook it so that you keep the integrity of the emulsion:
1. While whipping the egg (as per video) do it in a bain marie (a double boiler).
2. Use a food thermometer to bring the temperature of the egg mixture to 145degreesF/63degreesC.
I'm only suggesting this method to those that don't want to use raw egg. I would honestly do it as per video myself because I'm lazy and I'd much rather be coding. XD.
TY for this bc I'm scared to use raw egg. I will screenshot this comment for when I do try this.
To be sure you have to reach a temperature of 82 Celsius, 63 are not enough.
Cafe Sua Da is my favorite way to make coffee, so I already have a couple types of vietnamese coffee, a few filters, and the sweetened condensed milk laying around. Can't wait to try this recipe, it looks incredible!

I'm Vietnamese and the idea of raw eggs scares me. But now that I have watched this. I don't think it would be that bad. Definitely gonna try it. And hopefully going to try the original one day.
Hope you like :o)
Pasteurize them if it scares you.
I'm leery of raw eggs too, but this does sound great.
The balance of coffee to egg is off compared to where I had it in Vietnam. There was always just slightly more egg than coffee so when you stir it through its creamy the whole way through and you don't need to add milk. So good! I even had an egg hot chocolate in Hanoi!
I love Viet coffee, but this looks incredible.
Gotta give this a go!

ahh just so delicious. I would just add a sprinkle of chocolate and cinnamon on top so that it ease the smell of egg and the strong flavor of Vietnamese black coffee. Oh and i would add a cfspoon of white wine into the mixture of egg yolk and condensed milk

This drink was first introduced during the sanctions after Vietnam war, when milk is rare and only meant for the sick and infants. So a coffee shop came with the idea of replacing milk with egg.
wow dont think i can ever make coffee without eggs again respect bro
Would it be easier to put the condensed milk in before the egg?
Love that you are literally everywhere
I suggest putting the egg after the condensed milk. Trust me I’m a local

I just realised that I've been on the most famous coffee shop in Hanoi, it was funny I was staying at a cheap hostel and there was a girl always at her bed, I asked why was she never our, and she told me she lost her wallet and she is waiting for her parents to send her money.
I did not have a lot of money on me as well only like 25 USD ( I was leaving the next day to Melbourne where I was living).
I told her like hey let's go for a walk, and she told me we should go this place I didn't know about the egg coffee I am Colombian an I was amazed by that Flavie, today talking with my gf I told her about the egg coffee started searching and I realise that I went to the most famous place ever for egg coffee in Hanoi without even noticing that!!
