  • There were some signs like oil leaking from different locations, especially the top oil filler cap, that indicated that there was too much pressure building up. Most likely while driving. This continued to occur even afer I changed the rubber seal in the oil cap. Also a weakness in these cars. So I decided to nip it in the bud before it blew some other seals.

    This is a common issue with all volvo redblocks, i recommend doing this atleast once a year, that includes on the 200-series, 900-series and of course 700-series

    I cleaned my throttle body today on my 240, 400K miles and looked like it had never been done, now watching this i realize why... the rest must be much worse, im gonna have to clean the whole intake system. lmao

    Good advice.
    I've owned several of these and always do this to restore the crankcase ventilation.. My last 740 completed 250,000miles still with a 'dry' engine. If you own one, do it (soon), it's easy and effective

      Hi! Do you know what happens when these get clogged up? Like what kind of problems can it lead to? My cars been idling rough and I’m wondering if this is the culprit!

  • @lionreb
    @lionreb 6 років тому +1

    The haynes manual talks about cleaning the flame trap when you do an oil change, but no place where I have changed my oil has ever done it , to my knowledge, or recommended it! I am sure it needs to be done..

      From what I've seen it would be very hard to reach from the bottom. I doubt that any oil place ever cleans that thing, it would take time, which shops wouldn't waste. Although maybe the volvo dealerships did back in the day after 50k miles or something.

    Nick, you said you figured out the problem in a later video. I can't find it. What was the reL issue and how did you fix it? I have a 91 740 with high crankcase pressure. Thank you.

    • @plightn
      @plightn  6 років тому +6

      Cleaning out this breather box did solve the problem, but it wasn't instant, it took about 50 miles or so before I saw that the cap stopped bleeding oil. I recommend you leave the oil dipstick slightly open until you can clean or replace the box. Also if your car has an EGR (California and other states required it) you should clean that. Make sure that all of your hoses going to the air intake and into the crank are clean, a lot of the time they are clogged up. An engine flush like liqui-moly can also help.

    Just thought about it now... with so much gunk around the holes, when you remove the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) some of that gunk falls down inside the holes, right? So I should change the oil and the oil filter after changing the PCV, don't you think?

    • @plightn
      @plightn  7 років тому

      Aussie Rod not a bad idea, I might do an engine flush this summer. Some folks really clean the area around the box before removing it too.

    • @TheAussieRod
      @TheAussieRod 7 років тому +1

      Yeah, I guess I will clean it before because I just changed the oil... Another ideia I had is to buy a new PCV and keep the older one to clean it properly, beacause it make take some time... That way I could change it every year or so, without taking too long with the car sit (its my daily driving)

    thanks for valuable video..just wanna ask if this has something to do with gas mileage...very high in mine..

    • @plightn
      @plightn  7 років тому +4

      Not really, these cars do a lot of miles. There is usually something that's causing the oil leak, like pressure that is supposed to be released but isn't because something is plugged up. A good place to start is an oil flush like lquimoly and then use dye additive to see where the leaks are coming from. The gunk builds up because either someone didn't do oil changes in time or the car was driven for short distances which didn't let the engine warm up properly. Most cars like to be driven at highways speeds at least once a week. Even modern cars.

      Awesome video, at nite in cold weather with cars driving by, very helpful I have a 940 wagon not turbo and I saw you can run your car warm it up and then start engine take oil cap off and turn it upside down on top of the hike and the negative auction should hold it in if it doesn't then it has too much psoitive pressure and the pcv should be cleaned..it's hard to find anyone to listen to me as a woman and I don't trust them to know what they are doing.

    Hi there - Arriving to this video 4 years late ... I'm form Argentina, very few Volvo 240's in existence here so no mechanic would touch it ... That turned myself into my own mechanic, what it is satisfactory some times, and a pain in the ... neck other times LOL. Would regular engine flushes clean the oil separator and PCV system without doing the cleaning/replacement? I'm trying to avoid replacing it, not for cost but because it scares me to ruin something. If I do so, the car is dead for 4 weeks until whatever I broke arrives from the states ... Thanks!

    • @plightn
      @plightn  3 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately no, regular oil changes and flushes won't work, they will make less stuff accumulate over time but the system is designed to take in blow by which happens on every engine since there is no 100% gasoline burning. I understand your hesitance since you don't know which parts might break. Feel the hoses, if they are brittle order any brittle hoses or plastics ahead of time.

    where is a crankshaft sensor? Can't find it. 740 turbo

    • @plightn
      @plightn  7 років тому +2

      Aman that depends on the model year, yours is either behind the engine on top of the transmission secured by one bolt or runs to the distributor on the back of the engine.

    • @Unidente02
      @Unidente02 5 років тому

      On the 740 Turbo, you will find it behind the engine block, just below the distributor. As mentioned before, it is held in place with one 10 mm hexagonal screw. It's probably best to spray a bit of WD-40 on the bolt one or two days before you try to remove it, and use a six-point box wrench. Although it may be possible to reach it with an ratchet extension and a socket, the awkward positioning may cause rounding of the bolt head, which you do not want.

    hei can you do the same to an volvo 940 turbo?? my engine is so oily. and it shaiking so bad . sorry for my bad english am from norway

    • @plightn
      @plightn  7 років тому +1

      The shaking can be caused by several issues, check for a vacuum leak, a bad harmonic balancer or the ignition control module (left of the air box). For me the shaking was being caused by a bad ignition control module also caused the engine to lose power going up hill (not to be mistaken for the ecu, the computer under the glove box). Still you have to make sure the timing is set right and that the distributor is working properly.

    • @DRESHCO84

      my car is not losing power up hill. but wen The car is idling it is like a massage in the car. hehe. sparkplug wiers and some wakum hoses i have replased and it got a bit better. sorry for my english

    • @plightn
      @plightn  7 років тому

      Daniel Dreyer check to see that the harmonic balancer is running straight and that the exhaust pipe is hanging properly. I had a moment where I drove off a high curb and that jammed the muffler up and I was getting all the vibrations from the muffler in the car. Also sounds like your motor mount or transmission mount might be need replacing.
