Most singers try to start hitting higher notes by 'pushing higher'. Maybe you've done this: Playing a note on the keyboard and then inching your pitch (and your face and neck) upwards until you hit the desired note.
Or maybe you're able to hit crazy high notes when you're fooling around, but as soon as you go to sing a song, you tense up and lose the ability to hit those same higher pitches and more. You start working against yourself!
In this lesson, I'm going to show you three unconventional 'exercises' to help you unlock the ability to sing high WELL... Without the face and neck tension... Without the reaching or pushing! It's not about working up to a note, it's about learning how to let go, and let your voice access those notes.
Sometimes i just feel like he's testing how far people are willing to go along with him with the different insanely hilarious voice practices.
Lmaooooo
I totally am. Waiting for that response where people finally throw up their hands and thumbs down it to death. haha
@@chrisliepe It’s genius lol
All vocal practice sounds insane to the outsider
I would think the same if it wasn't so damn logical based on what I already know lol!
Me: No mom, rock music isn't the work of Satan!
Chris: We're going to be removing our faces! *makes chicken noises*
haha
fuck yeah
LMAOOO i laughed so hard at that part
best 3 things on youtube: music, chris teaching singing, comments on chris liepes's videos. Everytime i click the video I learn and I laugh its awesome LOL
rofl lololol
in 10 years Chris's videos are gonna be so extreme with techniques like " ok this first exercise might seem a little weird but trust me. I want you to take your shirt of and go to your neighbors house and scream obscenities at them."
hahaha! That approach could definitely unlock some things in your voice with the right mindset!!
@@chrisliepe hahaha dig it tho. I’m actually recording vocals right now at this moment. Just taking a quick break. Thanks to your videos man!
Wow! I've been doing this exercise for years I had no idea n
Hahaha I find this future prediction kinda funny but true
@@chrisliepe the one who feels shame he doesn't feel art. You're the man, respect 🙏
As someone who's been struggling to sing higher for a while now, I appreciate every video you release on this topic.
GOOD! hopefully, one of these videos will cause an epiphany for you!!
I liked the video just cuz of this sentence:
"Singing ist not about achieving perfection" (0:34)
Thats exactly what I needed to hear.
I desperately want a competition of vocal coaches making weird sounds
I’ve just started dabbling in improving my voice and I’ve seen some absolutely insane exercises I didn’t know existed 🤣 maybe that’s why I can’t sing lol
@@kane6529 some of my best singing I've done is after doing some absolutely abysmal and horrifying "warm-ups" and "sounds" I've created. Never feel bad to get weird when it comes to vocals 😂.
Man I was having a bad day, but those chicken sounds really brightened my day thanks Chris 😎
Any time!
It is incredible that you managed to keep a poker face after doing this😁 3:25
haha ...right... not always able to
@@chrisliepe I'd love to see some of your outtakes :)
Dude you are a wizard. I’ve had zero musical training in my life and I decided to try to learn how to sing during the covid outbreak. In 7 or 8 months or so I have improved SO MUCH, pretty much exclusively using your videos! I get compliments from my friends about how good I sound and I tell them, Chris Liepe look him up. This style of teaching is by far the best and has to at least cut the time it takes to learn in half, probably even more. I just wanna say thank you so much man and I look forward to learning more from you!
This is great to hear!
Teacher: It's about the emotions!
Also Teacher: *chicken noises*
The tip on placing the vowel sound forward is something I wasn't aware of at all. This is a huge shift in the way I have been going about it with trying to create as much power and tone from the back of my throat, neck and tongue muscles. I can tell from your example that by placing vowels forward and mentally shifting the pitch to the front of your mouth on how clear and bright the notes get as the pitch is worked on and raised. Very cool. I am learning something every video and a lot from your "Discover Your Voice" course. Thanks, Chris!
You're so welcome!
Can anyone expand further on how exactly the vowel is placed “forward”?
“Experience your voice and sharing that experience” instead of focusing on hitting specific notes is such a great ideology
“I Want You to Remove Your Face by Clucking Like a Chicken: a Memoir”
Great video!
hehe
I totally love how you are not afraid to let go even if it is perceived "goofy". great.
Oh. My. God. The vowel placement was spot on how I choke all high notes. Guess I got my homework tasks clear now.
Cool!🎉 Im living free and louder now
Help me a lot! Thanks Chris!!
Nailing it. Love the videos. Thank you.
Amen, to that opening statement Chris.
I don't know how you come up with this stuff, but it works and you are a genius 😂
Great video!
Most helpful and friendly and relaxed. Thank you.
This is gold .....thank you..
I just love your approach to singing so much!
Really love your approach @Chris Liepe! Can't wait to dive into more of your tutorials!
wow! That was a great technique. Thank you for sharing them. :)
Great excersice, thank you!
Puts it all out there and I can appreciate that.
Thank you so much I love your approach to singing
Thank you so much... you so detail then another!!! APPRICIATE THAT!!!
4:22 this brought me so much joy today was very helpful also
Love from Kenya! ❤️
I did some practice with your tips, especially in "get more confident with your voice in all registers" and I did this week.
Well, I'm a baritone, a tenor told me baritono verdiano (agile) but I always stuck between regular baritone two octave from G2 to G4, sometimes an A4... Today, after a lifetime I sing I reached a B4!!!! And was good, full! Thanks a lot for your videos!!
Amazing tips Chris, as usual. Strong medicine!!! Kudos
In love with the song 'I'm living free"!!❣️
Your teaching techniques are the best.
You're one hell of a coach in many different ways.
Thanks for sharing.
So good. The “throw a note” seems so Freddy ❤️
Thanks indeed... I've learnt that it's about taking it simple!
I appreciate all that you do Chris. A national treasure.
Thank you so much! You gave things a name for what i have yet only experienced as a kind of vague feeling 👍
I love this. It’s brilliant. Thank you for sharing your techniques. This is so unorthodox yet so on point. Wow!
Particularly the e vowel placement tip is so so so helpful. That bridge to mixed voice is so delicate, this will go so far to help preserve mine! Thank youuuuuu
Wow! 😢 That's fantastic! 😊
Haha, loving the clucking, how you didn't crack (Laughing) until the last bit whilst doing this.... My neighbours must've wondered what the hell I was watching on tv. Your techniques are both crazy and totally amazing cos they seem to work. I notice an improvement and become more dynamic and becoming less afraid of singing high just by regularly watching your content. Keep on rocking ❤️
Wow, this video actually opens a new door to me in singing
Man, you're just funtastic.
Combining technique with fun and creating metaphoric anchors is the best for remembering and learning.
Thank you!
You're the man, hope one day to meet you in person. Thanks for the tips.
This was incredibly helpful! I was getting this high mixed voice axidentaly and was loosing it again getting back to belting. But with this crazy excercise now i can easily set this mode in my voice. Chris thank you so much :)
This was the single most useful singing tutorial I have ever received 🙏🏾
AWESOME! LOVE the clucking. LOL This was SO helpful, Chris. I see now how to place vowels as I go higher. Thanks for the great insight. The note throwing was very cool too.
Thank you chris!! Needed this my friend!
You are so welcome
Wow! That “living free” example is pure gold!! Cheers from Chile Chris!
Glad it spoke to you!
Your advice (and demonstration) of how important vowel placement is in being able to sing it in any range with garbling it, was spot on! I'm pretty sure we've all experienced this, and some have already figured it out by process of elimination...but probably forgotten it (like me). So, thanks so much for this reminder! :-)
Crazy sounding, but such a good a exercise.
These videos are exactly what I've needed; I've never given myself an opportunity to explore my voice like this, and in a short amount of time i am seeing wonderful improvements and hitting notes i assumed were out of my range. Thank you Chris!
Thank you Chris! I genuinely appreciate it man!
You're welcome!
Really cool idea of separating vowel placement from tone. There are certain songs that I can always sing and they seem to lead me to really rich tones even in ascending passages that cross the breaks, but other times I feel things shutting down. I’m just starting to discover how to relax through the break from head to falsetto and open things up and get the kind of resonant timbre I hear from my favorite singers. Thanks!
The last thing you mentioned is my biggest problem and after almost 2 year of beginner singing i found it right now, In this time that I'm more focused in your videos i think that I'm finally making progress.
you're the definition of "Coach", hope you have a great year.
Thanks Chris, for putting all those videos out. With your exercises and examples i really start to get the gist of freeing my voice and those aha moments are amazing. You're truly a talent!
Awesome lesson, thanks, Chris
My pleasure!
Can't wait to try this in the car later! Been struggling to get past an F# comfortably for ages, thanks to your other videos I've managed to control the break of my voice past that note to get comfortable screams!
This is hysterical and absolutely spot on for a lesson! your ability to get students to understand new concepts is amazing.
You're so pleasant to listen to.
It's pretty cool, how you're helpful. You make us explore our voice, like literally, we're doing weird noises and that's how we notice what our voice is able to do. It's also cool to see you go off-key, let your voice be free. Making us confortable with the fact that "if we're not in pitch while trying, we don't care". I really enjoy your content. And with this one I also laughed a lot ^^.Thanks for your work man!
This video is valuable for both information and comedic relief 😂 ive never been more entertained by a vocal excercise
The vowel placement is one of my struggles, and often I tend to have the sound going "behind" dragging me and adding tension.
I have now applied your tips, and above all the third advice seems to improve the connection from the chest to the head, as well as freeing up from the tensions.
Thank you Chris.
I was about to go looking for this video when yours popped up. Always exactly what we need :)
Perfect!
TOTALLY loving your Train of thought with singing❤
You are a very inspiring teacher not only for singing but for self-expression too!
love this thank you! Also, so much gold in here to make an out of context compilation
ITS so much fun to See U having fun expierencing Your voice. Thanks for so many different exercies with a lot of fun.
Glad you enjoy it!
I'm a voice coach myself and I admire your work, lots! Thanks so much for the inspiration you pump out in every vid!
So nice to hear! Thank you!
I always appreciate how willing you are to do stuff that would embarrass me to do. Like doing weird stuff or singing bad on purpose to demonstrate. I mean that in a nice way and its something i admire and find helpful.
didn't realize how much I was constricting with my throat and tongue muscles until I started really paying attention to it (don't have a vocal instructor to guide me on this), started seeing progress on a problem note right away!
This was such a fun video to watch!
Good!
I will be singing for an audience for the first time in a very long while. Thank you for these sessions!! EXCELLENT working with you!!🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
OMG MAN YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH HELPFUL THIS VIDEO FOR ME! It's feels like illegal to access this amazing content. THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCCHHHH!!! Wish best for you and your loved ones
this is soooo good..thx Chris
You're so welcome!
amazing! I don't even speak English but I understand all that you talk (sing) about, thank you so much, this video is more than useful❤
I'm happy to see your channel grow chris. I learned mixed voice from you. 🧡
That's awesome!
Being Loose and Projecting the vowels forward is an instant improvement for me, i never thought about it before. Thank you! :)
The timing of this video is uncanny because I was just complaining about how bad the word free sounded when I tried to sing "Free Fallin'" the other day. I didn't know why it was so difficult for me to get that word right, but now I think I know. It isn't that high of a note, but maybe my tongue is getting in the way even in chest voice. I can't afford your course, so I really appreciate these videos!
Now that's a very interesting approach. Relaxing my face is something I neglected in the past months. Thanks! Need to go back and rewatch your video on why nasal sounds aren't as bad as their reputation.
this is so cool wow
Great !!
my neighbors are gonna think I'm crazy. lol
Man! How the hell can you do this on video without constantly cracking up!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! (And yes it definitely helped with my hitting higher notes, I noticed the tension immediately when I focused on what I was doing)
hehe... ZEN clucking!
Christ I need this. I’m a one man show dishing out sweet child and various other high pitch twisters that seem to tighten when I get stressed. Thanks Chris. Love the mouthful of water idea too. And you free now. Understand now where the tightness comes from and how to deal with it. 👍👍🙏
In one week everything changed by watching your videos. Not a really good singer at the moment but the doors are opened and now I’m doing things I thought I couldn’t.
Hi there, I'm a vocal coach from Germany and I recently came across your channel. I really have to say you are one of the best coaches out there. You know what you are talking about and it's fun to watch your videos and highly informative as well. I am a folk singer and I'm also singing ancient music,. but I always wanted to be a rock singer ;-) We will see, what will happening to me after working with these exercises. Thank you and greetings from Berlin.
Holy shit. After ages trying to get mixed voice above a g4 (I'm a bass / low baritone), I did the "free" exercise and subconsciously hit a mixed voice b4. Thank you.
DEAR GOD THANK UUUUU
Thanks bro
You're Fantastic!!!
hehe, thanks!
You are tremendous my master🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉😊
What's going on here? This works!! I was Bass baritone in high school. I binged your videos yesterday. Woke up listened to this one & found myself hitting notes I'm not supposed to. I checked my range 3 times B1 to C6, I've never done that, it increased both ends of my range B1 to C6! Now how to stay this relaxed? By the way I'm 67 years old🎉 this is a Christmas present to me
This is awesome!!! Thanks for sharing!!
I’m heading to chick-fil-A ...Sudden craving 😂
Keep up the good work brother!
Funny, and useful. Great. What else? Thanks for sharing this.
Thaaaaanks man this worked like magic.
You're welcome!
