  • EDITOR'S NOTE: At 9:16 in a previous version of this video, we showed a photo of Jonathan Van Ness as the voiceover mentions "mens' heels." Jonathan Van Ness is non-binary and does not identify as a man. We have replaced the image with one of actor Billy Porter.
The pandemic seemed to have killed heels with sales falling by more than 60% But now, designers are bringing back five-inch heels. And we couldn’t help but wonder - are Manolos making a comeback?

Sneakers didn't kill them off, health issues did. Extended wear of heels is proven to cause a myriad of issues. I only wear heels for short periods of time and usually choose a wedge.

I also wear heels. I wear more heels that sneakers because I barely own any. Although the only Time I would wear heels is like short trips, going outside and I wore them for shopping at Costco. I wore heeled boots at school as well and after I sat down for 10 minutes almost 5 hours later after I put them on, I felt fine wearing heels. I ran in those heels, Jumped down stairs in them and yea, I was walking liek Ariana in stiletto boots. I am also very very feminine compared to other people. Like VERY VERY feminine. And I don’t like athletic activities or outfits. It doesn’t suit me because I’m not a Tom boy 😅

We are living in cancel culture…when women are scared to look that she put “ too much effort”, I hear it all the time, how to look like you didn’t try too hard!
It use to be different, women had right to be femmine, put make up all day if they wanted, walk and talk like woman… thinks have changed, and we are scared of doing the wrong thing or saying the wrong thing… and most importantly if the simple woman try to dress well people start to say why, you don’t have any position to dress up! Or a house wife dress well, people start to judge her, why is she using husband money, why is she trying to look good when she “ does nothing” when in fact a housewife is most hard working woman of all…

Heels are not getting killed off. This is how companies start 'trends'. They make you feel outdated for still rocking a style, then push their own products on you. Sneakers do not have the same effect that heels do and do not even come close to killing heels. Plus, sneakers are so overpriced and ugly these days and can be easily replaced by a good pair of flats which are just as comfy and more breathable.

Apparently you must never wore sneakers in your life😄..or at least any sneaker of worth. How can you say sneakers are not comfortable there are so many sneakers with technology just for comfort but here is the thing they will cost you. You can't go buying mediocre sneakers at rack room payless and Department stores and places like these and expect to get the best comfortable sneaker ever. You gotta visit sneaker place that sell performance sneakers. They are costly but no where near as costly as high fashion heels which are cheap made and sell for thousands of dollars. A pair of Red bottoms are so over price just because the put car paint on the bottom of them. All LV does is spray Lacquer paint on the bottom and charge lots💰 💰 💰they are not even comfortable to walk around all day in. I think you they getting a pair of sneakers like Ultraboost or Re-act and you see how comfortable they are they all cost less than any SL...VL...Gucci pair of anything.

It's not just heels. The pandemic has seen a rise in comfort clothing, less makeup, etc. When there's barely anywhere to go, it's unlikely people will want to buy stilettos and fancy clothes, especially because we don't know when things will go back to normal and we can use these items. That's why most people are understandably prioritizing comfort, buying sneakers, hoodies, sweatpants, etc. Trends fade for awhile and come back with full force. We're seeing a resurgence of Y2K rn, once the pandemic ends in a few years heels and fancy clothes will come back full force

And a lot of the expensive designer trends are looking out of touch as thrifting styles and Instagram stores are more individual and cute and affordable. It's so hard to take fashion seriously. It's always trend after trend and endless shopping sprees when really you should just wear what you're comfortable in or what's practical
Edit: People who say they want to have a certain aesthetic don't seem to realize how trivial these kinds of problems are. Sure, you'll look good, but at the expense of our environment... Then when the earth isn't habitable anymore we'll see if you still need to care about fashion. If you want to look a certain way but only like once or twice, you're better off not looking that way at all, otherwise you better commit to that style for a long time. It looks like I'm telling people what to do, but honestly are you gonna complain about being told around instead of seeing the underlying problem that exists right now? Please stop thinking about yourself so much and actually realize the impact your actions have.
Edit...again. Before you read my comment and go 'oh they didn't point out '....' and '....' or you identify even the slightest slip up, can you not waste my time and yours and just move on?

I'm Sorry to hear your Sister developed bunions because of heel use. Perhaps the heels themselves are not to blame. Heels are a beautiful apparel foot wear. She was not suppose to be in heels all day. Heels are meant to beautify your style look for awhile. And on Special occasions. Not to wear them constantly. Also it takes gentle time to get acclimated to wearing the heels. Moderation is key here. I sure hope she heals from the bunions. I'm a Man. I have bunions and I wear Sneakers. Hopefully you and Your Sister will consider giving heels a Second Chance. Please don't blame the heels. It is important to use discretion and care when deciding to wear heels for extended periods of Time. Heels are Special because of their Unique Beauty.

And I still think that they can look nice for very rare formal events (maybe), but I'm just over it. If I'm out I want to enjoy being out and enjoy walking around. If I want to dance at an event, I want to actually be able to enjoy myself and dance. I'm to the point in my life now where I just want to be comfortable and enjoy myself. Having a chronic genetic connective tissue disorder that wasn’t diagnosed until the latter half of my 20’s, I never managed to handle heels very well both due to the balance issue but mostly due to the discomfort from wearing high heels. I may still wear shoes that aren’t completely flat, but then the heel is no more than an inch or so, or even less to really just provide a restful angle of the foot without putting too much pressure on the forefoot when wearing the shoe. I’m very pressure sensitive which is one reason even 2-3” heels become a living nightmare for me to wear, and heels like that can be just as painful for me even if just sitting down.
Another issue for me was always the size and fit of high heel shoes. I’m a women’s US 9-9,5 and also have pretty wide feet, especially over the metatarsals, it was really damn near impossible to find high heel shoes that even fit me in the first place, let alone find a shoe that wasn’t compressing my foot awfully within seconds. I could never use those gel insoles for high heels because then the shoe became too small instantly. Because of course I also have a high profile foot with high arches (arches that almost completely collapse as I stand up)
I really did try because high heels can look fantastic from time to time. But last time I wore any was about 11 years ago for a special event and while I somehow managed to stand with them during the event, I could barely make it back to my hotel room once the event finished because my feet were so extremely painful (outright nerve pain in my forefoot) even though that particular pair of high heels was probably the best pair I’ve had. I still have those shoes at home, as a memorabilia from that day because the shoes are stunning (red satin like material stilettos with open toe) but if I was to wear any heels again for an event, it would be my brown leather pair with only about 1-1,5” heel and that are not stilettos and that I bought for my wedding day (wore a dark green prom dress type dress, that was actually my prom dress, as my wedding dress. Worked great for an October wedding as the leaves changed color outside)
But yeah, flats or sneakers are both more comfortable and safer to wear, so that’s what I stick to these days (and my orthotist approves)

I'm on the wait list for a connective tissue specialist, and I agree. I've been wearing barefoot shoes (Vivo Barefoot, Xero Shoes, and even Vibram FiveFingers) a lot more recently, and you'd think being too flat could cause problems, but I found it helped, where insoles often hurt. My toes and fingers are really long (part of why I'm wondering if I have hEDS), so having the weight spread evenly across my feet help a lot, rather than squishing my toes, and making my already unstable ankles even worse. I do have a couple pairs of boots with heels I don't mind, but that's because of the ankle support, which I like if I'm not wearing compression on my ankles. I'm actually looking at what I could wear for things like weddings, and I'm surprised at how many cute flats there are online!

Because what their implying is not at all what that article says if you pause the video and read it, the article is saying that the bill would hurt their business, not that heels would. I suppose you could make the case that Business Inisder was saying that in relation to the bill, but by sandwiching it in between the lawmakers opossing heels and cowboy boot industry oposing heels, it sure seems like they are misreporting the fact that shoemakers were against the BILL and not the HEELS.

For weddings the majority would wear flats, lower heels or fancier sneakers and a few would maybe have higher heels. Very few wear high heels casually here, it's not practical to walk on cobbled streets in them and if there's no cobbled streets then you're probably out on the countryside where they make even less sense.

And some of my most comfortable shoes are boots with a 3 inch block heel.

I love my heels, honestly, and I won't stop wearing them. But I am extremely particular about heels and will not continue wearing them if they hurt. I also only wear them when traveling for work, or on days in the office (when I am mostly sitting anyways). They are a fun part of fashion and after years of being a bootcut and keds girl I love taking time to put together looks.

Sure, I'm a guy, that knows nothing about the appeal of high heels, but that's not to say it's the same for heels in general. (Disclaimer: I'm not a shoe expert, so I apologise for not knowing/using correct shoe jargon) But as punishment for a drinking game, I was forced to where a good pair of 5.5cm stilettos for a whole day. Surprisingly, no incidents, only really nasty leg cramps and blisters. But it now makes me cringe whenever I see women in thin, tall minimalist high heels with steep angles, especially the on really unsuitable footpath conditions. Mad respect for anyone forced into wearing those sort of things on a daily basis against their will.
In saying so, I have no issues with comfortable supportive shoes with (short/minimalist-style) defined heels, if anything I quite dig the look. Though, like with all specific styles of clothing, I'll admit while certain people like myself dig and would look good in a pair (shoes appropriate to gender), it's definitely not for everyone. For me I tend to look more in the direction of boots & dress shoes.
The following is the story of how I came to have such an opinion... yeah it's a bit of a long one.
As a part of the cadet I did as a teen, I had to wear a pair of leather GP boots as a part of my uniform. Now the standard-issue pair was half a shin tall, full flat soled with a single zip to allow for slipping in & out of the boots (sure it had laces, but that's to adjust for comfort/fit). At the time, I myself had big feet, which kept growing to the point where my unit struggled to find a standard pair that fitted me. However, after a lot of digging, we did find a really outdated pair of boots for me to wear. The boots, despite its age were knee-high, fully laced, was in perfect condition and best of all featured a prominent set of 2cm heels. Looked like a pair of riding boots, and despite how they looked, was really comfy to wear, especially for my final 3.5yrs as a cadet. During all that time, I spent it as a senior cadet, and you know I really loved those boots, not just because of all the time and effort I spend polishing the whole thing (so many layers that you can key it and easily fix it with some water and tissue, to the point where it looks as if it was never keyed to begin with), or how good they looked for someone of my position, but the fact that unlike the standard-issue flat sole boots, the heels on my boots meant that when I walked/marched on smooth solid pavement, it always made a really distinctive, oddly satisfying click. This distinctive click and my strict, fair demeanor, according to my juniors, meant that it really did unintentionally help drive across the point of my seniority.
Unlike my low-maintenance uniform, I got really attached to it, so it really pained me when I couldn't keep the pair and was forced to give them back at the end of my cadet career.
Anyways, that's my story & opinion, and if you decided to read up until the point, I thank you for sparing some of your precious time to listen to the story of an insignifican stranger like me. I hope you have a wonderful day, stay safe, Merry Christmas and happy holidays.

I can't see heels ever dying. I'm wearing platforms more than I am actual heels anymore, but that doesn't mean I wear sneakers either. I'm a boot person. It's all about fashion trends than anything else. Like, I dress in alternative fashion. Knee high platform boots, spiked collars, all black, ripped jeans, fishnets, heavy smudged eyeliner, the whole gambit. I'm somewhere between goth and grunge, I think, and I literally only wear slides, platforms, a very damaged pair of chucks, or ankle boots I got from Walmart. As my fashion sense has evolved from a cleaner, more formal basics look to the mess (affectionate) that it is today, I traded in my wedges for chunky heels, and my chunky heels for converse hi-tops, and my converse hi-tops for combat boots and platforms. I will eventually go back to my chunky heels (especially since I can't walk in wedges -- I will trip and die, that's a guarantee) and give those more time in the spotlight, but for now, as the cycle dictates it, I'm all about flatter shoes with maybe an inch of difference in height between the toe and the heel.

I'm surprised that wedge heels didn't even get an honorable mention! My favorite pair of heels is a pair of cork platform wedges with a 5 inch heel. I love the way they change my gait because it gets me noticed! I inevitably get quizzed by many women on how I can walk in heels. Practice, practice, practice is what I tell them.

I like how this video basically lumps heels and high heels into the same boat... Which is stupidly incorrect. Heels will never disappear. And the reason is the same as it is for the disappearance of high heels. Health. A shoe without any heel, be it seperate or integrated into the sole is unhealth for your posture. You will not find a single pair of suit shoes that has no heel, the same goes for most sports shoes (mostly invisible from the outside) and even most sneakers have a low heel.
So. No: sneakers have not killed heels... They still have heels (most of them), just not as visible.

But even then, I’m wearing my Chucks out the door and changing in the car when I get to my destination. I even prefer Converse sneakers over proper tennis/running shoes. The thinner, more flexible sole makes me feel closer to the ground and allows my feet and toes to grip the ground as opposed to an inch of rubber doing the gripping. The fact that Chuck Taylors have been mostly the same for over 100 years, clearly they’re doing something right.

Nah, I just don't have anywhere to wear them. I typically wear heels when I go to weddings and other semi-formal events (dress shoes that is). At my age, weddings are few and far between. Now it's a waiting game for my nephews and others their age get married. I work in manufacturing so gym shoes are great for me. I've even thought about buying steel toed shoes for work, but couldn't find a pair that were comfortable. Although I technically don't need them since I work in the office. I do have a pair or two of heel boots but don't wear often because of the nature of my job. I usually wear them for things like girls night out.
