  • When you think of Apple you probably think of the iPhone. But just 15 years ago, its hit product was the iPod. The iPod changed the way we listen to music and helped grow Apple into one of the biggest companies in the world. But the iPod went from accounting for almost half of Apple's revenue to not even being promoted by the company. Today, the only iPod Apple sells is the iPod touch, having discontinued the iPod Classic, Nano, and Shuffle.

@@Worldofourown2024 Well if you're from the UK I get all my stuff from musicMagpie. I got a 120GB 7th gen iPod Classic for £100 and it works just like new (aside from a couple of scratches).
If you're from elsewhere, just look online and you're sure to find a trustworthy site if you research it properly. All I can say is DO NOT get used gadgets from Amazon (speaking from experience, it's a disaster). eBay is unreliable too. Use a site that is dedicated to buying/selling gadgets which has good reviews.
As for your iTunes problem, I recommend you ask around on forums before you resort to buying a new iPod. That being said, there could be a problem with your iPod's hard drive. Put your iPod into diagnostics mode to see if there's anything wrong with it.
One last thing to note is that it's possible to just have specific parts replaced in your iPod instead of getting a whole new one. There are sites that will do this for you too (but again, research this properly). You can also replace parts yourself, but you must be EXTREMELY CAREFUL taking the iPod apart because you could break the screen or if you're careless.

However, the wifi connection at school was terrible (except in my art class...so I naturally hung out there a lot, lol). We had ethernet cords though and while the full internet was supposed to be blocked from us (it was supposed to be for class assignments only but the teachers found the programs hard to use, especially without wifi), someone found a way to get to Google from the school's library page and from there, everyone downloaded Firefox (Chrome hadn't emerged yet and nobody wanted IE). Once that task was done, the internet was ours and Frostwire was added to all of our laptops. I remember downloading Zelda and the Minish Cap but never got a chance to beat it :)

I needed something with a long battery life and storage capacity that doesn't connect to the Internet so I can listen to long audiobooks and huge music libraries while in the middle of nowhere. Plus, those old iPods Classics can take a beating! I've dropped mine on rocks, concrete, and even in a river and it still works great! No screen cracks either. Even though it's a pain to download new songs and movies onto it now, I still prefer the Classic because of what I need it for

I think if it's just for listening to music, the iPod is allot more easier to use as far as navigating through your collection of music. Then again, more people rather than buying songs or albums would prefer to instead pay for a subscription to Pandora or Spotify or something like that to stream any song at anytime.

It’s like this. Vinyl killed/< 8-Track Cassette Tape Killed Vinyl, CD killed Cassette Tape iPod/MP3 killed CD and Streaming killed iPod/MP3. So there was no rise and fall of the iPod it went out on top it was simply the transitioning and evolution of the times. What would be considered a “Fall” would be if iPod/MP3 were still the relevant way of listening to music and an competing company came out with their own version of the iPhone or a MP3 Device and it dominated the iPod in sales THEN you can say it’s a rise and fall of the iPod. NOT if it’s a transitions of the times. So this video is kinda click baity or maybe they should just change the title to “The Rise and Fall of the MP3 era”.

Yes, a new battery could be purchased and put in which is what's wrong beside me ripping the weak connector off the tiny motherboard which is the one in the bottom right of the Ipod. The other one on the mid right side is tricky to get back in and be held in place for it's not a good design where it's like trying to get a tiny piece of paper to sit in a groove properly with nothing to secure it. Reasons why (in my opinion) digital music players are still valid, relevant or necessary in the 2020 tech market:
    - No local distractions when you're listening to music (phone calls, notifications, redundant apps, etc.).
    - Longer battery life: For example, due to a more energy-efficient display (mainly due to a lower resolution and size) and less power consuming tasks for the CPU.
    - The possibility of a compact and durable product design which doesn't have to adhere to smartphone design trends.
    - Much more product design flexibility.
    - Much less peer pressure on companies to remove the headphone jack, since it's a normal feature for music-listening enthusiasts and a must for audiophiles.
    - Since it's a dedicated device, there's more focus on developing and manufacturing a system which creates higher-quality audio output.
    - Lower pricing because it's a simpler product.
    - Storage sizes for everyone's budget and needs, both with and without a microSD card (which can also add plenty of storage): 16, 32, 64, 128+ Gb.
These products are obviously not aimed at people who're OK with paying a monthly fee in order to listen to music via an ad-free streaming service, which they don't own, but people who take the time to build an actual music library that is theirs to store and play.

    • @esmooth919

You know, it's funny. I have a massive music library via CDs and digital copies purchased on various websites, including iTunes; And I'm actually okay with paying 10 bucks a month for Spotify. The reason for that is because I treat Spotify the way other people treat satellite radio. It's internet radio to me. Being able to listen to music a la carte is the icing on the cake.

@@rayoflight62 I don't know the size of your budget, but maybe you could save up for a decent player that has longer-lasting performance. Sony Walkman portable music players have been around for years and they've always seemed decent to me, I think Sony is a reputable and nice company when it comes to product design. The Sony Walkman NW-E394 costs $74.99 on their website, for example, and they claim it offers up to 35 hours of use.
You can also get a rechargeable AAA battery for your music player, in case you haven't done that.

    • @arvaneret_329
      @arvaneret_329 2 роки тому

@@esmooth919 Sorry, let me correct myself: My point was that portable music players today aren't aimed at people looking for what a streaming service offers; smartphones are the ones with apps for that. In other words, these devices (portable music players) normally work with local music libraries, which is something you've built, and that's good. Thumbs up from me. I've used both alternatives as well and they both have their own qualities or advantages. I think it's amazing how much music one can listen to on-demand, and discover, with services such as Spotify. But the disadvantage is that the user ends up being subject to the company or service provider's interests (e.g. community guidelines, caving into cancel culture tactics, etc.) as well as their own management. The moment you stop paying the subscription fee, you also lose the privilege to listen to the music library you have built with their selection, but with a dedicated device storing a personal music library locally that doesn't happen because it's not so much a privilege : You supposedly own your music.
Apple Music (iTunes) doesn't actually sell music in a way that grants absolute ownership to people: They merely grant something like a lifetime, non-transferable license to listen to it, as far as I'm concerned (correct me if I'm wrong). Someone can download the files but the availability to re-download them is subject to Apple's interests and limitations.

  • @Von45Rose
    @Von45Rose 4 роки тому +25

“for people who still like owning music” For me this has got to be one of the biggest “take aways” from this video.
the point is to own music. Not, to be tied to a subscription service that allows you to do all kinds of cool stuff until you stop paying your bill.
this thought process may show my age but everybody experiences lean times and the music streaming service may not be a high priority.
its my opinion that a consumer should purchase the music and once he owns it he/she should be able to do what ever they want to do with it. Artist write the music and the record labels pay them handsomely for it. the labels sell the music and make a ton of cash. the consumer gets art.
I don’t believe it should be a never ending value stream.
Thank God this is not true for Famous artists work Picasso, Van Gogh, da Vinci, Monet etc.
could you imagine! whether you could afford the original or you bought a print. To have to pay a subscription each month to keep it on your wall! CRAZY.
Owning music means the artist sold his work, you bought it and can now do what you will with it

Don't be sad to use an mp3 player or DAT. It only tells me about you that you are a music lover. 🙂 I still use my zunes and buy mp3 songs. I actually bought like 10 mp3 songs this week. I prefer use my zunes over spotify and other streaming services. Actually, there is renaissance of mp3 players in these last years. 🙂

Yes, glad you made this video! I still use an iPod Classic 6th gen as my main music player and iTunes with the Apple ID subscription! And my library is huge, but that's no problem as there is an entire industry to mod and customise the iPod hardware with a larger battery and storage module that holds an SSD. This is exclusive to just the Classic models and not there for the shuffles or nanos...

It honk it's good for people who want to be organized but need ALOT of storage space. I hope it doesn't get discontinued anytime soon

Yep, they're still $300 like 10 years ago. Mine went bad last year and I was mistaken to think I could pick another up for $50 just because it's an old outdated device. I guess it's the Apple brand and prestigious monopoly it holds. It wasn't ever completely compatible with PC to manage music library and the device. My library is a mess with music missing...

My 80GB iPod Classic from 2007 still works and is practically brand new. No dents or scratches. I hold on to it because I loaded it with some audio programs I could not buy or afford on iTunes. I hope I will keep it and never have to dump it. Until I get it upgraded to say 160GB or 1TB and replace the battery with something longer lasting.

I remember when iPod Minis were the cool thing and then I got my own iPod Nano. Those iPod commercials were iconic too. At the time, iTunes was really convenient because you could purchase songs separately. Until then, if there were a couple songs I liked on an album I had to buy the whole CD. With iTunes, you got more freedom to select your music and only purchase specific songs. Also, the smart phone era was kicked off by the iPhone. Apple has clearly made its impact.

my first iPod was the iPod Nano 3rd Gen. I remembered receiving one as a birthday gift when that first came out, and enjoyed storing my own songs into the device at a young age. Then by 2010, got the iPod Touch Retina display , where it first introduced me to iOS. Still remembered everybody from middle school sharing how jailbreaking was simple on the older ipod touch devices. Good times

I had a red 2nd gen and a purple 5th gen (both were eventually stolen while at school 😭😡) but now I really want one again because it would be nice to be able to take my music places and be able to leave my phone so I can properly detach myself from the world for a bit.
Also, I can't stand it when certain apps don't allow music to play 😒😤

i remember that I had an Itouch and an Ipod in 2010 while I was in the Army. Since I lacked internet access while I was there, I used to transfer to the Itouch Episodes of Animes and songs which I could see during the week. When I finished my time in the Army, I simply didn´t have any use for them and stopped using them. But I still have great memories of those two devices!

I literally still use my 7th generation iPod nano because I do not want songs to take up space on my phone, nor do I want to use streaming services and have to rely on internet to use them or have to pay for premium services. Before I took said iPod that was collecting dust, I used my PlayStation Portable as an MP3 player, it had this neat "A-B" repeat function which basically meant that you could loop a specific part of a song; like go from point "A" to point "B", really made listening to that specific 15-second part of a song over and over again really easy since I didn't always have to rewind it myself whenever it ended.

my first iPhone was a 5c .. only having 8gb, i continued to carry around my 7th gen ipod nano for music and video
i also had a 6th gen ipod nano as my watch from 2010-2015
when i got my 6s with 128gb, i no longer needed the ipod and by this point i had replaced my ‘iwatch’ with an actual apple watch; also holding 8gb itself - arguably the perfect ipod replacement
now, i have a xs, 256gb - it holds everything
    and i jumped from a gen 1 apple watch to a gen 5 - 32gb of storage
my watch now has 4x the amount of storage my first iphone did .. crazy
about 9 months ago i passed my test and began driving everywhere, no longer walking around with headphones on so much i missed listening to my music as much as i did
however, i found a use for the 7th gen ipod - it had been dead in a drawer for years
i powered it up, synced my latest library since i still buy and download my music
and it sits permanently in my car, plugged in as my media player
my ipod days aren’t over yet ✌️ 💛

I own exactly one Apple product, and that is a 5th gen apple nano. I keep it in the car so I can listen to the songs I like without sacrificing my Android phone's battery and privacy. It's easier to use while driving (a simple shake and you're on shuffle) than a cell phone, the battery lasts forever, and there's no problems with internet dead-zones while driving through the back roads (I live in NC)! When my iPod eventually dies, I'll buy another one on ebay, and if they're no longer available, I'll find the closest Android option that I can. Streaming services have WAY too many security issues and aren't easily usable on the road.
