    • @Shakamuni
      @Shakamuni 4 роки тому +14

      @@sketchuyu7298 The problem here is how much attention is enough to keep you motivated... 100 likes? 1000 likes? 10.000 likes? 100.000 likes? When for you "attention" = "likes", it's like a drug: it will never be enough, and you always need more.
      What is even worse: there will be ALWAYS someone who gets more "likes" than you, and the comparison will drive you crazy.
      The best way is to cut the shit at the very beginning: stay away from social networks or change your paradigm about motivation and attention.

    • @rosannevink5901
      @rosannevink5901 4 роки тому +3

      @@sketchuyu7298 I see your point and it does make you feel more confident. But don't make that take over you. Social media is and will always be a weird place... One day you're in the spotlight and get hundreds of likes, the next day you're back in your dark corner getting not even half the amount of likes you got the previous time. And THAT is what makes you very upset and de motivated and maybe even stop doing what you love. That's why I tell myself and try to tell other people that likes shouldn't be you top priority. And do what you do because YOU love it and because of some silly little heart/like.

    As a fellow artist, I do struggle with this often. I almost quit creating art because of these 'expectations'.
    Just a tip. Never value your work as to how others value it. I know this is hard. It is a fact that social media is designed to imprison our minds into thinking that we are more/less significant than others but it is our choice whether we let it manipulate us or use this as a catalyst for further self improvement.

    I agree. I noticed when i try draw with "purpose" like drawing for a friend or a commission. Things don't go well at all, but when i draw just for drawing with no plan or any thought i do ten times better.

    • @LinkEX
      @LinkEX 4 роки тому +4

      Yeah, I know what you mean.
      Though I would abstain from using "purpose" that way:
      "Purpose" commonly describes a higher, more idealistic drive, rather than a social or economic one.
      So _your purpose_ would actually be the thing that solves the very issue of drawing for likes and attention.
      But because you are convinced about its meaningfulness you intrinsically ascribe to it.

      I have noticed that in my case it's because I'm too focused on making something look good (details and shit) while I'm still working on it because I'm worried that it will not look good in the end. And then I have spent an hour on an detailed eye when the face proportions are completely wrong because I spent too little time on getting them right earlier. But when I'm drawing for myself I'm not worried about it looking perfect and make a ton of rough sketches until I like the composition, proportions, change the colors midway etc. I don't know if it also counts for you, but that was the issue for me and you should look out for that :)

      That's the protip I've heard multiple times by now, and it is quite accurate.
      Rather than spending 80% of your time on 1% of the details that will be barely visible, invest that time and energy into aspects that have a bigger impact on the final piece.
      Spend 1% at most of your total time in details. It decimates your progress - potentially also in terms of your art skills.
      (Unless maybe if you draw something to perfection to make the next Mona Lisa, but I'd argue that's only worth it if you've reached a very high skill level to begin with - which probably won't be reached if one keeps getting lost in details.)

    Expectations struggles are my every day struggles. Not only when it comes to my art, but also my friendships. I often expect people to do certain things I do for them and when not receiving them, I only end up feeling bad, doubting not only myself, but also the other person, our relationship.
    I grew up with the mindset to please people and care too much about what they think, I often don't do or even wear things I think would make people judge me.
    With art it is the same really, I try to be the best I can at the moment, but often see people like my sketches and things I spent much less time on more, than finished pieces I worked on for hours. I expect people to like my finished art that I put a lot of work into and I get people liking stuff I spent 10% of the time on. I am grateful even for that as a small creator, but I sometimes wish the work I put more effort to was recognized better.
    I wish people could just "turn off" their expectations...

      I learned a great phrase for this phenomena, and I say it all the time for any number of things. It’s “never selling too far in advance”. It was originally applied to something men do while attempting to date a girl that they just met and don’t really know. Instead of getting all worked up in the head projecting way into the future with this one girl that you don’t know( she could actually be a horrible beingat the corebut looks pretty in the outside, or simply a really bad match for you in particular). Guys are great at doing this and it is a bad habit plus it also telegraphs all the wrong things to good women. If you do this it’s your brain working you. It’s your lesser self running the show and it IS easy to begin to get help and self-improve... once you see how this ONE mental weakness has ruined good things for you sooooo many times in the past! You gotta get out of your head, and attempt to look at the world sometimes from the God’s eye view where everything is limitless and finite and interconnected. Your 5 senses are basically designed to deceive you so you constantly need to check them. Hopefully you master them, never let them get the best of you. Be realistic ANd be positive.

    To me a way to not be involved emotionally with my posts is just to not post my drawing on Instagram as soon as I've finished them.
    When I have a piece that I love, that I'm proud of, that's at that very moment that I can be touched by negative comments, not so much likes etc. So I wait, and keep them safe until I don't really care and I've moved on, at that moment I post them and yeah who cares about the likes, it becomes a score and it's not personal.

    For the most part....this video is true.
    However, during the Coronavirus pandemic, and so many people staying home....gyms and other stores being closed down....along with other bad things happening in the world right now....it does seem like now, more than ever, people are interested in seeing work that a person puts out there, whether it's on Facebook or Twitter.....whether it's attention from a celebrity or a close friend..... people want to be entertained, inspired, and assured that there's still hope in the world.
    That's true not just for art, but anything that a person is good at in general.
    I think that when you really put so much discipline, passion, and focus into something, and put it out into the universe.....not expecting much(or anything) in return....that's what truly matters. Someone can even get what they're looking for and more, with that mentality.
    Someday, the Coronavirus will be gone, people will go back to functioning normally(while not having to stay at home most of the time), and people may not be as interested with any video, artwork, comment, or Tweet that comes their way.
    However, now is a really good time to just give....not only in a positive way, but selflessly.
    I have a friend who does interviews for a living, and she said herself that she loves the fanart that I send towards her. Before the pandemic happened....I always put off drawing because "I didn't have time for it". I took it for granted.
    I used to draw a lot as a child, and stopped in my mid-teens. Had I not started drawing again recently, she wouldn't have known about it, and I really wouldn't be the artist that I am now.

Even if something has 95% chance of happening there's still that 5% percent chance of it not happening. I would just say with most things expect the likely, hope for the best but, prepare for the worst.

These are symptoms not only seen in the art world but in every career field when someone is defined by their career or job and their metrics instead of just doing the best that they can and feeling good and proud of putting in their best effort. It is why I have heard that it is better to tell your child, "Are you proud of yourself?" or "how proud do you feel about accomplishing this?" instead of saying, "I am proud of you." The child will look at themselves and analyze themselves to seek better improvement and be more concerned about how they feel instead of seeking validation from their parents or others outside of themselves. Also I always enjoyed your are. I got to get back into drawing again.

    Thank you for making this video this really helps me a lot. This past few days I constantly think and have a self doubt about my art. But I think your right maybe I don't practice even more to reach my expectation and maybe I just need to go in the flow maybe thing's really dont work out in just couple of days of practice.😅

    This video legit came to me at the right time. I gave a shot at instagram again and well, the results are fluctuating but I'm trying to keep my head high. Falling to self doubt and this instant gratification of social relevance gets the best of us.
    My way of correcting myself when I hit a low is to think that, As creators whether it be art, writing, music etc... Its not about putting out content and waiting for the validation that you're relevant. That's wrong, that's looking through the wrong end of the lense! Its about creating content that'll put a smile on people's faces and even give them an idea to put smiles on other people's faces and make them feel good. Do things with the intention to make the world a better place.
    Great video though, honestly thank you for posting it.

    In the words of Russell Simmons. "DO YOU." Plain and simple. I love arts because it is in my blood. I do it for love. I don't it do it to please others or to be popular. That's one of the things that I have come to hate about being a graphic designer. After working for a graphic design company for a number of years, it did more harm to my creative edge which I didn't realize at the time I got laid off in 2008. It was rough. Just got a divorce and picking up the pieces afterward. The 2008 economic crisis crashed the job market and everything bottomed out for me. I lost everything and was homeless in AZ for almost two years. So to make a long story short, I've been rebuilding myself 10 years running and just got back to picking up the pencil and the sketchbook. Guess what? I'm struggling to create anything. Finally got a computer and digital tablet and all the latest software. I am at Ground Zero and don't know where to start. So I am slowly but surely getting back into the groove. The way I feel right now is DAMN IF THEY DO AND DAMN IF THEY DON'T. I love what I do. Keep up the good works. I enjoy watching your videos. It is inspiring and helpful in my journey back to where I should be.

      Rodney Williams what a story... I admire you and your SOULPOWER. They most important thing a soul can possess here in this 3D realm is attitude. How one acts when confronted with adversity and if I was to be granted one wish for me or anyone,it would be to have the gift that keeps on giving, a great attitude, even before health. Because even you health can be taken away, but I would hope that when that day does come when transitory, material and earthly things get taken away that I am still able to bea Beacon of light strength and hope for others even during my own suffering.

    I relate to this in a completely different subject.
    I was expecting to finish college and already be good enough to get a job and start working towards moving out. Now, I'm on my last semester and nowhere near good enough to get the kind of job that would allow me to save up. But this video made me realize that the place I live right now is not so bad that I need to move out immediately, nor is it so temporary that I need to start thinking about leaving straight away because "this boat is about to sink". It is not, so I just need to calm down and gather as much knowledge as possible so that I can build a beautiful portfolio and be proud of what I make.

    I can certainly understand your plight with expectations, especially at your size! Its like a huge load of your stocks dropping in value as soon as you look away for a second.
    As an artist, expectations aren't too much of my creative norm, I just try to make a piece with as clear of an idea I can muster from thumbnail to fininshed result. Great vid!

    I think people like rough or unfinished pieces of art more often because it makes them feel they can do something in similar quality, they seem to be "easy" to create and that's encouraging. When they look at very detailed, high quality art, they more often just acknowledge the fact that it's "fantastic"... but it doesn't make them feel like it's "possible to repeat". I hope it does make sense 😅 Many people love to watch other's art because they search for some inspiration and much more of them don't have very highly developed skills yet... so I think that's why they seem to like more unfinished things or even sketches, than these finished ones.

      Heldchenklein there is some thing extremely wrong with that, because your focus becomes so tunneled in just your aspirations that you don’t even realize how good 10k really is, you begin devaluing everything that has immense value and therefore you’re boycotting your own happiness over “Likes” Thats why being thankful is always better than being hungry.

      @@thenamesmango7235 You can't say that. It's as if them having *their own* expectations offends you. Not everyone's the same and if it devalues the "immense value" then who really is here putting the likes on a pedestal? This statement would put a lot of peope down and make them question themselves if they've become a bad person for having *goals* and *expectations* . This isn't about the numbers. It's about how the artist would feel with seeing the numbers. They would think that their art isn't good enough and this can cause an impact on them and their mental health. Telling them to not have much expectations isnt going to help either. Not hating but this was extremely inconsiderate of you to say.
