I think the dying scientist you meet in the beginning got a HUGE improvement on that character's performance. His voice is all croaky and raspy, because he's holding on to his torn out neck. And when he says "Save them," he sounds so sad and despaired as he died, that it actually caught me off-guard and unsettled me. The difference in this scene in the remake is that he gives you the picture of his team, which makes this hauntingly emotional for such a flashy, rapidly paced intro.
THAT part was huge! I'm glad they kept the dialogue and events that happen. Unfortunately I would take all day nitpicking at how I don't like how red and desaturated the color scheme is, it makes the enemies difficult to make out imo.

I feel for this dude, I was so hyped for this remake aswell and you can tell he has genuine passion for the og house of the dead games. It’s good to see hotd1 available on modern platforms but it could’ve been so much more.
Just so everyone is aware, the news about the game coming to multiple other platforms came out the moment I was trying to upload this video. I didn't want to re-record anything so I just added text acknowledging that. It's coming at the end of the month which I think is really soon, but I'll definitely get the PC version and I'm sure it'll be the definitive version. Yeah, I'm super glad it's going on PC so soon after the switch version because I can finally use my Aimtrak guns. The gyro worked but it's very much a game that feels so much better with mouse/light gun. PlayStation is getting Move support after release too so that version will probably be the best console version overall. Gonna be interesting to see if the graphics are more like the very first reveal trailer on pc, they got downgraded on switch but I'm hoping it looks a bit better on PC.
@@christiandauz3742 As far as I know, they still have the source code for 2. It's how we were able to get ports to other platforms like the Wii and PC.
From watching playthroughs, it looks like they made Chariot a lot tankier. I remember how you could just stunlock the shit out of him in the original, but in the remake it always looks like he's close to hitting you if you aren't lighting him up. The Magician just feels a little off with his movements compared to the original and it bugs me to no end, but overall the game looks decent.
YES. Stunlocking the shit out of OG Chariot felt really good. I could get through the OG version without taking damage, but every time I play the remake I always get hit at least twice.
Saw your previous House of the Dead video and it was fantastic! House of the Dead franchise is my all-time favorite Arcade game, no question about it. I've played all of them at Arcades (minus Scarlet Dawn) with HOTD2 being my favorite followed by HOTD3 (I know crucify me) HOTD1, HOTD4 and then HOTD Overkill. The franchise is easily in my top 5, if not top 3 franchises of all-time as well. There's just SO much to love about it all, heck, I spent countless hours playing HOTD2 on its PC release, with all the different unlocks and such. So I was just flabbergasted that SEGA actually remembered about this franchise again for console players (seriously want a physical release for HOTD4 & SD already Fer fuck's sake) and I'm still very much wanting to get this game, even with the issues that are holding it back. If PS4 gets a physical release then I'll get it for that, if not then I'll get it for Switch with intent on a PS4 purchase much later on sale, as I'm big on physically owning my games and it isn't often that HOTD gets physical releases anymore Biggest bummer from what I've seen is the music and the mood lighting of the game. Those early tracks actually fit, but past the first 2 Chapters, it falls off for me. The game graphically looks great but some areas and moments get held back from how the mood lighting is done. All-in-all I'm still very pleased to get something...especially after how long it's been since HOTD 3 & 4 were on PS3 digitally, with Overkill and the HOTD 2&3 Wii being the last physical releases. @@darrylaz3570 listen, it's a great game, HOTD as a whole is great but I miss the gore and blowing holes and limbs off enemies and I prefer the Handgun & Shotgun a bit more to the Machine gun. Music was great and I did enjoy the Boss battles :P.
@@nikkis.2066 You can blame CERO and their draconian rule against blood and violence for that. Even Overkill and Remake got hit by that rule, and for Remake not only the gore was toned down, you can't even kill civilians in the Japanese version. I wasn't irked that the gore is gone since I've gotten used to it already, and I do miss the gore, but honestly had CERO be a little bit more lenient we might still have them in the arcades

Nicely put. I've been enjoying the remake for the most part. At least this game is bringing more attention to this franchise. This certainly won't be the last time I'll be taking the drive up to those manor gates.
I've accepted that it isn't what I had envisioned, but it's hopefully good for the series in the longrun, and once it's on PC I'm sure it'll be a much better experience.

I ended up buying this for the Xbox since I've been playing HOTD as a child. My biggest gripe is that no light guns take away alot of the immersion for me, although I still had fun. Hopefully the remake of the 2nd game at least keeps all the extra game modes (original, challenge mode etc.)
Tbh, I think you were a little unfair to the new Magician theme, because you didn't even put the part where it TRULY shines. Yes, the original theme is just on another level and that will always be the case, but the new one is still pretty good (I'm saying this as someone who has the original theme as a religion (especially the saturn/HOTD 2 version))
I did say that I like parts of it. I still think it's a decent song overall, and I listen to it outside of the context of the game now, along with some of the other tracks. It's just that I love the original version so much that it's really hard to match. That being said this is still really good.
The trailer for it looks like it was running on the PC version, which I can say is infinitely better than on the switch. Very good analysis by the way!
Looking at the Switch version and the trailer, there's definitely no way the trailer was running on Switch hardware. I do however wish the PC version starting area looked closer to how it did in that first trailer.
Yeah, you can definitely tell it wasn't on the Switch, otherwise you'd expect less than 30fps... am I right? As for that, it seems like they've been unintentionally slightly pulling a "Ubisoft" in terms of how a game reveal looks different from the final product. Thankfully only slightly, at least for the PC, which is the platform I own and favour.
It's funny that I found the previous HOTD video the day before this one came out. I made a comment in the previous video about one of the games you added in the Addendum at the end of this video, so if I was the one who was the first to let you know of it, I appreciate you adding it. As for HOTD Remake, I do look forward to the PC release.
Worse part? One of the branching paths is purely determined by the number of lives you have (left= odd number lives, right= even number lives, with the elevator to the right being the ideal score route), which is imo pure bullshittery, good luck reaching there without taking damage or wasting lives just to get even number of lives.
@@ZillennialRosa Ironically that's completely the opposite of what director Takashi Oda wants with the franchise (that being the games must be fair enough to be beatable in one credit.) Granted that is still possible with Scarlet Dawn, but to me it's a bit more clear that the philosophy isn't being upheld as much as the previous games here. (Which is also ironic given that Oda directed Scarlet Dawn as well)
Gonna support this game then hopefully Sega will show some love to this series. Like new games in the future and some B-movies that was faithful on all the HOTD series.

Sure it has a few problems... But I am very thankful it got a Remake. I still love the Arcade Original most. And hope they bring the rest to switch or other consoles.
I think this remake is good for what it is. I think it’s faithful to the original and tries it’s best to be a good remake. but falls short in certain aspects. Ports are coming April 28th and I’m looking forward to the modding potential on pc. Too bad my pc doesn’t meet minimum requirements for the remake.

14:15 What... The... Hell? One of the reasons this is one of my favorite game from the arcade is that badass soundtrack that really gets you into the vibe of the game.
I got this for the PS4 last month. Most of issues you pointed out are not present on my copy of the game. And in my opinion, the music is just as good as the original. I used auto reload to save all the scientists, got the weapons and i finished it.
A lot of my complaints were specific to the Switch version of the game. I made a follow-up video on my second channel where I talked about the PC version. I was still really disappointed but most of my points came from technical issues, which a PC version would largely fix. I try to find the positive in every situation and I firmly believe that the devs working on the game cared about what they were making, but it came out feeling rushed and I focused on that. In my closing thoughts I talk about how it doesn't replace the original game in my opinion. I'm curious what made you say I was apologetic.
Excellent review, I do agree on most of the problem of the game, however I am glad to hear there are some aspect of the game you did enjoy. I really feel like this dev team wanted to make a fantastic love letter to the HOTD community cause I can see the passion within this project. I do hope that the music license issue is cleared and that the gyro aiming is significantly improve and that the PC version runs the graphics like a charm. I really love this series and I do wish that it gains more support cause this franchise does have a significant amount of fans. Here's hoping they'll update glitches and controls issue for the Switch to make it a much better experience. It happened to the remake of Panzer Dragoon so I'm positive the same fate can happen here.
Overall the gyro controls and various tweaks and jank of this remake led me to not enjoy it at all. That being said I will be getting the PC version as I know for a fact that mods will shape this game into what I wanted it to be originally. Not having to deal with shitty gyro controls will also let people better evaluate the other problems with this remake, such as enemy attack patterns and the stiff camera movements.

Loved the original, my best memory of it, 9 years old in 1997, in the official Sega arcade in Yohan Plaza/oriental city shopping centre in North London, me and my twin brother watching an asian dude playing with both guns on the large DX machine, a red banana on his head and a cigarette in his mouth, absolutely smashing the game, I will always remember that :)

The Magician fight also goes on for way too long, and they changed his attack pattern. The attack where he can throw glowing balls into the sky happens a lot earlier than it should in the remake.

Perhaps I'm just lucky, but I know multiple local spots that have a House of the Dead arcade machine still going. I've had the perception that it's pretty common for an arcade game.
I have yet to find one in my area, but I'm sure if I look harder I'll eventually find one. It's just up to places that have these units to take good care of them since they're sort of an endangered species in a sense.
So i am just gonna go out on a limb and say, The PC version is going to be the most successful for sales, and if local multiplayer will be a thing on it, Steam Remote play is always an option, or even Parsec is very good when it comes to local gaming on PC, an old friend of mine and I used Parsec to play wrestling games from PS2 Emulation and it was very smooth due to both of our connections being solid. Even then even something as simple as modding is going to revamp this game so much more. And i think even MORE people will have exposure to HOTD, which is fantastic.

Was very hyped for this release, only to be let down by janky controls and no option to use a Wii Remote. The PS5 won't have the same problem but good luck finding a PS5. For a remake of one of the greatest lightgun games ever, this is a mess.
Technically it's coming to PS4, with the option for PS Move controls coming down the line. Since PS5 is backwards compatible I'm assuming it'll work fine. It's just that not many people have the adapter that allows the PS4 camera to connect. I do have that because I own a PSVR, so I'll have to check it out when they add that.
I could tell it was a Unity game, I just knew it had a remake and when I saw the gameplay I said to my self "this is just a Unity game from greenlight" but putting aside all the memes I do love this remake.

@@AdmiralLink I have a feeling they'll use the same engine that they used for this current remake, at which point I'm not entirely sure how useful having the original game's source code would be. Although, they could at least study the game and do a better job of replicating enemy movement patterns and such. My biggest problem with the current remake is the way enemies often move differently and the camera movement which messes me up.
@@ZillennialRosa lip syncing needs work and researchers sometimes talks really soft which I noticed while watching other people's gameplays. Also the reload sound (especially grenade launchers) and the kill count is annoying and breaks the immersion. With the source code, the devs could take the movements and use it in the remake. And as you mentioned about make small map size so that there is no pop-ups textures and smoother loading screen.
I do think that they nerfed the bosses here because they are aware that the Switch's gyro have a subpar performance. I hope that they will buff these Bosses for the PC release!
I appreciate that they slowed the bosses, but I also don't like the smaller windows of time to damage them and the sheer number of shots it defeat bosses in this game, especially Hangedman.
Rundown on my experience of the PC Version: - Controls are a lot better this time around, but you still need to tweak it because of how low the default sensitivity is. But overall, not too bad. - Graphics are more improved, but it had worse optimizations, when entering certain sections of the map, it doesn't load until 3 to 5 secs later. And some parts of the map have super bright lighting which is too obnoxious for my taste, and some areas are too dark. - The BGM for some stages are not too bad, but I can not in my life ever accept the remake's Magician theme. Personally, it's sacrilegious to even change the tone of the original, the HOTD4 is an exception. -Gameplay aspect, it's not too bad, but you'll find yourself bored after several playthroughs. It's too short for a remake, and with a price of $9.45, I think that's too much. Sure, there are achievements and unlockables, but you'll going to just be repeating the same levels over and over again. As a fan of the series, I'm not too mad with the results, I think the devs did an excellent job on making a 90's classic, despite the source code being lost to time. But I will say that, I am a bit disappointed with how it's turned out and the issues that it currently has. Let's just hope the sequel's remake isn't as bad and stays true to the soundtrack, gameplay feel and look of the original.
Yeah, I get the reference, but the menu music in the Saturn version is also literally just the music from chapter 4 but extended. There's a distinct lack of a song that has the same tone as the 'attract' theme from the arcade and Saturn versions.
Honestly I give this an 8.9/10 I love that they managed to capture the atmosphere of the original My only complaint goes to the music, whoever the new composer was while they managed to capture some notable riffs from the original they made it rather... Funky for my taste, even the opening cinematic music while very 90s made it sound more like a Saturday morning cartoon rather than the creepy gothic tune of the original
My thoughts honestly fluctuate depending on what mood I'm in, but I've generally made my peace with it. It's pretty good for what it is, but I treat it as a different game altogether.
i loved the remake...but it can replace the original? no. not even if its just perfect; the original has a special charm that cant be replicated and will last forever.
That's the part about this whole thing that stings the most. It's knowing that we'll never get a port of the original Arcade version. It's what inspired me to make my whole retrospective video.
Honestly I really hope chariot gets his signature movement modded back into the game in the pc port, he's my favorite boss and him not having it makes me sad
The house of the dead 1 was the first game I ever played and now its my favorite game of all time. I was excited and hyped that the game would be good. When I played this remake, I gave up on the first level and started crying after seeing such a beloved gamefor me butchered in so many ways. The horrible controls was made me gave up the most, but there were so many more issues: the enemies were way too fast or way too far than it was in the OG, it takes way too many shots to kill creatures going after survivors while in the OG most of them died in 1 shot and the music is Just not there. Do you guys know how bad it had to be for me, a huge fan from the first game, gave up and started crying?
You know I always thought it was the other way round, the enemies in the original took an absolute hammering before dying, not so in the remake. And don't get me started on the godawful ragdoll deaths in the remake...

@@ZillennialRosa its not that they are more agressive, their speed is all messed up. They kill survivors way too fast while taking way more bullets. The last survivor in chapter 3 is borderline impossible in the remake.
On the PC the enemies don't melt, you can keep shooting their bodies and the bodies will keep reacting. You can shoot them backwards pretty far! its actually pretty funny
I have this game on the PS5 and it runs alot smoother than the switch port, there are still tiny moments when it hiccups but the load times are way faster on this version of the game. In honesty its a fantastic game, the graphics look great and its all very crisp, ive keep replaying it trying to go for the best high score lol its addicting and definetely worth it for new and returning fans. The ragdoll feature kept the game feeling fresh and its so fun blasting zombies away, I am just grateful to play this game again after all these years. They should def add a old school graphics mode as an update! Cant wait to play the House of the Dead 2 remake!!!

Haha, nice. I mostly just don't want to oversaturate this channel with HOTD content. I'll probably more videos over on my second channel. I want to talk about the upcoming PC and PS4 ports, but I don't want to put that video on the main channel, so I think the second channel is most ideal for that. A review of 2 remake would definitely go on the main channel.
Something I have never figured out about these old Arcade cabinets is how come, despite all of today's processing power behind even commodity computers, we still haven't found a good way to reverse engineer the code to port it to a more modern programming language. Considering the ROM files are quite small, it would seem to me to be much less of a hassle to just figure a way to do that than to rebuild it from scratch.
I'm not the smartest when it comes to discussions of the technical side of things, but my guess is that there just aren't enough people that are interested in these particular platforms actively working on it. We at least have a working emulator that makes the original game playable on PC.
The more I listen to the music, the more I want to believe that remake OST actually doesn't fit for HoTD. It would make sense if it's a game where cyberpunk alien from another galaxy is invading Earth.
Hey man have you heard of CarnEvil? It was an on rail zombie game from 1998. Honestly its kinda scary but pretty fun. Sadly (most likely because it came out the same year as hotd2) it was little known and forgotten. I recommend that you check it out and review it. 🙂
I have heard of CarnEvil. There used to be one at a local pizza place in my home town. I actually featured a bit of footage at the beginning of my HOTD retrospective. I don't think I'll make a dedicated video on this channel since I primarily focus on things I can talk about for at least 20 minutes, and which meant a lot to me growing up. HOTD was a much bigger part of my childhood. If I do talk about CarnEvil, it might be over on my second channel.
Yeah, I made a video on my second channel talking about the PC port. This video literally went up the day that the PC port and other console versions were announced. As expected, most of the issues I complained about here were specific to the Switch version.
The best remakes are ones made by devs who made the original, RE1 Remake 2002 for example. Didn't grow up owning Sega consoles, but I'd like to check this game out, especially if it gets a physical copy on consoles. Time Crisis was my favorite arcade shooter, but House of the Dead looks fun too.
Switch is getting phsical versions. I'm not sure about the other platforms, but I'd wait until the 28th since that's when the game comes to those other systems, including PS4, XBOXONE, and PC
@Zillennial Dissonance, I might pick up the Switch copy. There's not much releasing in the Summer I'm interested in. Can't speak for Xbox, but PS4/PS5 physical copy might happen. Limited Run Games did a physical copy for their Panzer Dragoon Remake on PS4 and it was an open pre order, nice. PS4 will have Move support too. Not a light gun, but close enough. If Sega lost the original Source code for HOTD, makes me wonder if they lost the codes for their Dynamite Cop/Dynamite Dekka games too, especially the fun Sega Dreamcast one.
@Zillennial Dissonance, It's sad that Konami of all Japanese game companies is doing a great job with their retro game collections than: Sega, Nintendo, Capcom, etc.
The remake overall lack some art sensibility, that becomes really clear if you compare to the OG. Here is 2 examples that shows this lack of sensiblity: 1- in the OG, the camera in the chariot fight is slightly looking upwards, helping to sell the idea that He is bigger than a normal human. In the remake, the camera placement makes him look small since it looks straight at him, He only looks big when He is near (wich is frequent skmce He doesnt suffer enough knockback from shots). In the OG, even when He was a little far from you, He looks bigger than you. 2- The f*****g ending is ruined in the remake. In the OG, we have the agents last words since the mission is over but sophie is "dead", só we get a sad music but it changes halfway through it to be triumpht, giving the feeling of "sophie is gone, but I finished the mission and curien's criation was stopped, I must go on" and after the credits song, you have the stage clear theme, wich is cheerfull. What the remake decided to do? They decided to have the same sad final lines from the agents, giving tha same sad ending vibes from the OG, but then plays the stage clear (thats is cheerfull and happy) and right after that it goes back to sad on the credits song. WTF?
The PC version is confirmed for later this month, and I'm sure it'll be better. We're also getting a version on PS4, XBOX One, and Google Stadia (I sound like an ad right now lol).
I'd recommend 2&3 on Wii and if you can, get Overkill for PS3 so you can use the PS Move controller and play that game with the better graphics and extra levels.
I really enjoyed this remake but there were a lot of issues that could be fixed. I’m hoping that for HoTD2 they take a lot of the criticisms from this first game and make it better. I’m looking forward to playing Remake again once the PS4 version is out and I can use the move controllers. Also glad you mentioned Zombie Revenge. It’s one of my favorite beat ‘em ups ever and I think you’ll enjoy the craziness it has on offer. Also you mentioned my biggest gripe with scarlet Dawn. The fact that enemies can take so much damage but drain your HP quickly really annoyed me with that game. Also the music is so lackluster in it. Great video and I’m looking forward to what you release next.
It's still gyro, but if it can help anyone, the dead zone at 5.0 offers much more stability in aiming. I also put X et Y sensitivy at 0.7, but I suppose this is personnal preference here.
Okay so idk what city you live in but I can think of probably 3 different HOTD 1 cabinets i could play in mine! That’s a bummer, the Original game is pretty accessible to me!
I live in a small college town where there aren't really arcades aside from one at our local mall and a small Peter Piper Pizza. My local mall had a HOTD machine a few years back, and I played the hell out of it. I took all the top high score spots. Unfortunately, there were issues with the 2P button and gun so I couldn't play with friends. Not a lot of people played it so it didn't last very long at the mall arcade, and it was replaced with HOTD4 which was there for even less time. Currently there are no HOTD cabinets of any of the games in my town.
Yeah House of the Dead Remake is pretty okay. I understand the grief of not having a reference point since the source code is lost but for what it's worth they did a fantastic job. It's still a bummer when it comes to soundtrack, boss fights, and lack of things I was hoping for the game (such as expanded lore and more game modes), but overall I'm pretty satisfied with the result, and given Forever Ent. track record of updating the game constantly till it's good, like how they did when Panzer Dragoon Remake comes out, I'm certain some of these hick-ups will be fixed. And to explain why the "feel" of House of the Dead 4 and Scarlet Dawn was like that, where enemies disintegrate instead of blood and gore, there's one reason why: CERO (Japanese ESRB) was formed not long after 3 was released and it regulated every single video game release since, including arcades. They are notorious for being extremely harsh towards blood and violence, hence why 4 and SD had toned down violence. In fact SD had a prototype gore system where you can shoot to see burned flesh and bone before disintegrate into bones, but it got scrapped. This affects the Remake in Japan as well. In that version despite getting the 2nd highest rating, violence is still toned down and you can't even kill civilians there which means less achievements in that version as well.
@@ZillennialRosa Personally I wasn't that peeved that the gore is gone. In fact HotD4 ended up becoming my favorite in the series for how much of an improvement it was in terms of story, boss fights, set pieces, lore, and voice acting, and was looking forward to see where the series goes next (until Scarlet Dawn makes, imo, multiple major step backwards). But I do admit that I miss the gore. Had CERO wasn't so strict about it we might still had it on the arcades, the only way gore might be staying in the series is through the console releases instead.
I too was waiting so long for this remake, I loved the original game as a kid but I wasn't willing to go out and buy a Sega Saturn just so I could play this game, sure the remake isn't as good as the original but it could have been a lot worse

It's funny how the Music "corner" is like a whole chunk of the living room. It may not be the whole first floor, but it surely ain't a corner. (And I love ironically extending analogies to an absurd extent). Great video, man! I watched your previous video a couple of days ago, and what a good timing to catch this one without waiting months for it. Really good analysis, I think it's really fair all in all. I personally really dislike the remake, but that's just because my enjoyment of the first game is really attached to my nostalgia, and thus the accumulation of all the subtle differences just takes me out of the experience. But I can grant that it's not an awful remake, it's actually amazing what they could achieve with the budget Sega gave them (so I'm more blaming Sega for the estate of the remake, not the devs, they really gave it their all). That being said, this is coming from someone who loves HotD 3, and can't enjoy 4 or Scarlet Dawn, those two really soured my enjoyment of the series. So maybe my opinion isn't the popular one.
Thank you for the kind words. I try to be funny sometimes. I'm hopeful that the direction of the series going forward will be better, kind of like how Resident Evil went back to its roots after not being a survival horror series for a while. Maybe Remake mods will get it very close to the arcade classic, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

It truly is great on PC. I don't have a Sinden Lightgun, but I should make that investment sometime soon. If someone mods Wiimotes to work that's something I'd be able to use.
It could be the graphical limitations of of the original game, or maybe it's the color pallete, but the original has a much creepier vibe and I wish that the remake could've captured that better. I feel the remake is way more colorful and saturated and it kind of ruins it for me.
I get what you mean. The original had those striking greys, and all the blood always stood out against it. There's a very distinct charm to the look of the original.
Same this remake didn't go so well. Hopfully it'll at least make enough money to where they can keep updating this remake and make that HotD 2 remake the best it can be. Til then, I might just pick up the remake when it goes for sale on pc.

My guess was that early on they were planning on bringing the game to other platforms. It came out on PC and other consoles in the same month, so it seems like those were the platforms they were actually targeting.
i got the port for the PC and it automatically fixes a lot of the issues with playing on the switch regarding what i hear are your takes on it Still i find it to be a pretty good remake considering the hurdles the team had to get over to make the product. I did a review of the PC port over on my second channel. I'd say that version is worth picking up even at the current price, but I'm also a massive HOTD fan, so I would have payed $100 to play it.

im a bit late to this video and im not sure if the game updated since the release but it actually does support touch screen on the switch, that's how I usually go with my playthroughs because aiming with a controller is much more difficult compared to me absolutely destroying my switch screen with my frantic tapping
A problem that I have with the game was I find the arcade version has a stronger sense of style, and I don’t mean people looking cartoony. The game has very high contrast, it had strong shadows but carefully selected colors to make sure everything stood out. If you look at some of the environments, you start to realize a lot of stuff like railings being orange red, some walls being this vibrant but not overpowering yellow, a lot of environments being mostly a shade of blue with even some green lighting in there, and the last two chapters delving more into vibrant colors taking over almost the whole environment. There was a certain feel their use of contrast and colors that created both an amazing gothic atmosphere and gameplay environment where everything is readable. In the remake, since they were using modern tech and going for a more realistic look, the models don’t have as strong shadows on them and end up looking more flat, while there are certain parts of levels where they don’t capture the same mood because the lighting engine ends up taking away the shadows and specific lighting of an area, like the bridge in front of the house, the hallway behind the double doors when you enter the house, the dining room with the murals, the hermit’s boss fight, and the entirety of chapter 3. There have also been cases where they got colors wrong imo. When they do try going for the weirder colors, it looks more desaturated and overblown. Some sections had specific coloring to them like parts of chapter 2 and 3, where they turned parts that were blue in chapter 2 to a warmer color and parts that were red and warm in chapter 3 to a cooler color.
I'd say they're all good in different ways. Each one is challenging the first time through. Chariot is the only one I actively dislike, particularly in the remake.
Man, this game is rough. I wanted to really enjoy it, but the way the controls work with gyro... made me miss playing the PC version, which honestly makes me think there should have been a PC port of this remake. At least aiming and clicking with a mouse would be a lot more precise. I don't think the remake is bad, but it could have been so much better.
For me is meh.. is not the best remake. (Is like good and bad at the same time x,D) 1- Ok, the map is perfect i like it and the zombie models that's good. 2- The RELOAD VOICE IS so annoying.. i prefer the original one (House of the dead 1 - 2) 3- I know HOTD have the worst... voice acting. But the original one (House of the dead 1) is better for me. 4- The music in a nutshell we can say: "no... This is wrong" and The Magician one is PAIN. The original one is like: "The last boss.. he's fast, he's strong and powerful. I will defeat you, monster!" It's basically what I think of the new House of the dead.
Yeah, I made this video right as emulation started to become viable for this game. Fortunately, I now live in an area where I have much easier access to arcades. It's not something I'm planning on covering any time soon, but if I'm able to play all the routes, I may do a small video dedicated to Scarlet Dawn.
There's not much of a difference between the two modes visually, aside from some extra lighting effects. It still looks bad in quality mode, and the framerate problems are even worse there. Also, for a game like this, high framerates are important, especially since the arcade original ran at 60fps. Performance is the ideal way to play, but even then, it only runs at 60 sometimes, and most of the time it drops down a ton.

I think the dying scientist you meet in the beginning got a HUGE improvement on that character's performance. His voice is all croaky and raspy, because he's holding on to his torn out neck. And when he says "Save them," he sounds so sad and despaired as he died, that it actually caught me off-guard and unsettled me. The difference in this scene in the remake is that he gives you the picture of his team, which makes this hauntingly emotional for such a flashy, rapidly paced intro.
THAT part was huge! I'm glad they kept the dialogue and events that happen. Unfortunately I would take all day nitpicking at how I don't like how red and desaturated the color scheme is, it makes the enemies difficult to make out imo.
i really prefer the 3rd game's way of the zombies decomposing, this one looked like the zombies are liquid

I feel for this dude, I was so hyped for this remake aswell and you can tell he has genuine passion for the og house of the dead games. It’s good to see hotd1 available on modern platforms but it could’ve been so much more.
Just so everyone is aware, the news about the game coming to multiple other platforms came out the moment I was trying to upload this video. I didn't want to re-record anything so I just added text acknowledging that. It's coming at the end of the month which I think is really soon, but I'll definitely get the PC version and I'm sure it'll be the definitive version. I'm not gonna make a new video on it because at this point I don't have much else to say, and I want to talk about things on this channel other than HOTD. Yeah, I'm super glad it's going on PC so soon after the switch version because I can finally use my Aimtrak guns. The gyro worked but it's very much a game that feels so much better with mouse/light gun. PlayStation is getting Move support after release too so that version will probably be the best console version overall.
Gonna be interesting to see if the graphics are more like the very first reveal trailer on pc, they got downgraded on switch but I'm hoping it looks a bit better on PC.

@@christiandauz3742 As far as I know, they still have the source code for 2. It's how we were able to get ports to other platforms like the Wii and PC.
From watching playthroughs, it looks like they made Chariot a lot tankier. I remember how you could just stunlock the shit out of him in the original, but in the remake it always looks like he's close to hitting you if you aren't lighting him up. The Magician just feels a little off with his movements compared to the original and it bugs me to no end, but overall the game looks decent.
YES. Stunlocking the shit out of OG Chariot felt really good. I could get through the OG version without taking damage, but every time I play the remake I always get hit at least twice.

Saw your previous House of the Dead video and it was fantastic! House of the Dead franchise is my all-time favorite Arcade game, no question about it. I've played all of them at Arcades (minus Scarlet Dawn) with HOTD2 being my favorite followed by HOTD3 (I know crucify me) HOTD1, HOTD4 and then HOTD Overkill. The franchise is easily in my top 5, if not top 3 franchises of all-time as well. There's just SO much to love about it all, heck, I spent countless hours playing HOTD2 on its PC release, with all the different unlocks and such.
So I was just flabbergasted that SEGA actually remembered about this franchise again for console players (seriously want a physical release for HOTD4 & SD already Fer fuck's sake) and I'm still very much wanting to get this game, even with the issues that are holding it back.
If PS4 gets a physical release then I'll get it for that, if not then I'll get it for Switch with intent on a PS4 purchase much later on sale, as I'm big on physically owning my games and it isn't often that HOTD gets physical releases anymore
Biggest bummer from what I've seen is the music and the mood lighting of the game. Those early tracks actually fit, but past the first 2 Chapters, it falls off for me. The game graphically looks great but some areas and moments get held back from how the mood lighting is done.
All-in-all I'm still very pleased to get something...especially after how long it's been since HOTD 3 & 4 were on PS3 digitally, with Overkill and the HOTD 2&3 Wii being the last physical releases.

@@nikkis.2066 You can blame CERO and their draconian rule against blood and violence for that. Even Overkill and Remake got hit by that rule, and for Remake not only the gore was toned down, you can't even kill civilians in the Japanese version.
I wasn't irked that the gore is gone since I've gotten used to it already, and I do miss the gore, but honestly had CERO be a little bit more lenient we might still have them in the arcades

I ended up buying this for the Xbox since I've been playing HOTD as a child. My biggest gripe is that no light guns take away alot of the immersion for me, although I still had fun. Hopefully the remake of the 2nd game at least keeps all the extra game modes (original, challenge mode etc.)
PS4 version will have support for PS Move controllers and PC has already been modded with wii remote and light gun support.
Tbh, I think you were a little unfair to the new Magician theme, because you didn't even put the part where it TRULY shines. Yes, the original theme is just on another level and that will always be the case, but the new one is still pretty good (I'm saying this as someone who has the original theme as a religion (especially the saturn/HOTD 2 version))
I did say that I like parts of it. I still think it's a decent song overall, and I listen to it outside of the context of the game now, along with some of the other tracks. It's just that I love the original version so much that it's really hard to match. That being said this is still really good.
The trailer for it looks like it was running on the PC version, which I can say is infinitely better than on the switch. Very good analysis by the way!
Looking at the Switch version and the trailer, there's definitely no way the trailer was running on Switch hardware. I do however wish the PC version starting area looked closer to how it did in that first trailer.

As for that, it seems like they've been unintentionally slightly pulling a "Ubisoft" in terms of how a game reveal looks different from the final product. Thankfully only slightly, at least for the PC, which is the platform I own and favour.

Here's a depressing fact: Scarlet Dawn has the same amount of Branching Paths as House of the Dead 4 Special...A game with only 2 levels...

Worse part? One of the branching paths is purely determined by the number of lives you have (left= odd number lives, right= even number lives, with the elevator to the right being the ideal score route), which is imo pure bullshittery, good luck reaching there without taking damage or wasting lives just to get even number of lives.

One of the reasons this is one of my favorite game from the arcade is that badass soundtrack that really gets you into the vibe of the game.
I got this for the PS4 last month. Most of issues you pointed out are not present on my copy of the game. And in my opinion, the music is just as good as the original. I used auto reload to save all the scientists, got the weapons and i finished it.

And yeah, I don't like the new soundtrack quite as much as the original, but I still think it's mostly pretty good. I'm probably just biased for the original tracks because of nostalgia.

I try to find the positive in every situation and I firmly believe that the devs working on the game cared about what they were making, but it came out feeling rushed and I focused on that. Excellent review, I do agree on most of the problem of the game, however I am glad to hear there are some aspect of the game you did enjoy. I really feel like this dev team wanted to make a fantastic love letter to the HOTD community cause I can see the passion within this project. I do hope that the music license issue is cleared and that the gyro aiming is significantly improve and that the PC version runs the graphics like a charm. I really love this series and I do wish that it gains more support cause this franchise does have a significant amount of fans. Here's hoping they'll update glitches and controls issue for the Switch to make it a much better experience. It happened to the remake of Panzer Dragoon so I'm positive the same fate can happen here.
My thoughts exactly. It had a rough launch but I think later on down the road most of us will be singing a different tune.
Overall the gyro controls and various tweaks and jank of this remake led me to not enjoy it at all.
That being said I will be getting the PC version as I know for a fact that mods will shape this game into what I wanted it to be originally. Not having to deal with shitty gyro controls will also let people better evaluate the other problems with this remake, such as enemy attack patterns and the stiff camera movements.

Loved the original, my best memory of it, 9 years old in 1997, in the official Sega arcade in Yohan Plaza/oriental city shopping centre in North London, me and my twin brother watching an asian dude playing with both guns on the large DX machine, a red banana on his head and a cigarette in his mouth, absolutely smashing the game, I will always remember that :)

I think the biggest crime is how they did my boi Magician dirty. Where's his need for speed and sick theme?
The Magician fight also goes on for way too long, and they changed his attack pattern. The attack where he can throw glowing balls into the sky happens a lot earlier than it should in the remake.
The music is really good for a small dev team. Great job for them. This game is growing on me

Perhaps I'm just lucky, but I know multiple local spots that have a House of the Dead arcade machine still going. I've had the perception that it's pretty common for an arcade game.
I have yet to find one in my area, but I'm sure if I look harder I'll eventually find one. It's just up to places that have these units to take good care of them since they're sort of an endangered species in a sense.
So i am just gonna go out on a limb and say, The PC version is going to be the most successful for sales, and if local multiplayer will be a thing on it, Steam Remote play is always an option, or even Parsec is very good when it comes to local gaming on PC, an old friend of mine and I used Parsec to play wrestling games from PS2 Emulation and it was very smooth due to both of our connections being solid. Even then even something as simple as modding is going to revamp this game so much more. And i think even MORE people will have exposure to HOTD, which is fantastic.

Was very hyped for this release, only to be let down by janky controls and no option to use a Wii Remote. The PS5 won't have the same problem but good luck finding a PS5. For a remake of one of the greatest lightgun games ever, this is a mess.
Technically it's coming to PS4, with the option for PS Move controls coming down the line. Since PS5 is backwards compatible I'm assuming it'll work fine. It's just that not many people have the adapter that allows the PS4 camera to connect. I do have that because I own a PSVR, so I'll have to check it out when they add that.
I could tell it was a Unity game, I just knew it had a remake and when I saw the gameplay I said to my self "this is just a Unity game from greenlight" but putting aside all the memes I do love this remake.
Unity games just have a look to them. It almost looked like a really high quality fan project at times.

@@AdmiralLink I have a feeling they'll use the same engine that they used for this current remake, at which point I'm not entirely sure how useful having the original game's source code would be. Although, they could at least study the game and do a better job of replicating enemy movement patterns and such. My biggest problem with the current remake is the way enemies often move differently and the camera movement which messes me up.
@@ZillennialRosa lip syncing needs work and researchers sometimes talks really soft which I noticed while watching other people's gameplays. Also the reload sound (especially grenade launchers) and the kill count is annoying and breaks the immersion.
With the source code, the devs could take the movements and use it in the remake. And as you mentioned about make small map size so that there is no pop-ups textures and smoother loading screen.

I do think that they nerfed the bosses here because they are aware that the Switch's gyro have a subpar performance. I hope that they will buff these Bosses for the PC release!
I appreciate that they slowed the bosses, but I also don't like the smaller windows of time to damage them and the sheer number of shots it defeat bosses in this game, especially Hangedman.
Rundown on my experience of the PC Version:
- Controls are a lot better this time around, but you still need to tweak it because of how low the default sensitivity is. But overall, not too bad.
- Graphics are more improved, but it had worse optimizations, when entering certain sections of the map, it doesn't load until 3 to 5 secs later. And some parts of the map have super bright lighting which is too obnoxious for my taste, and some areas are too dark.
- The BGM for some stages are not too bad, but I can not in my life ever accept the remake's Magician theme. Personally, it's sacrilegious to even change the tone of the original, the HOTD4 is an exception.
-Gameplay aspect, it's not too bad, but you'll find yourself bored after several playthroughs. It's too short for a remake, and with a price of $9.45, I think that's too much. Sure, there are achievements and unlockables, but you'll going to just be repeating the same levels over and over again.
As a fan of the series, I'm not too mad with the results, I think the devs did an excellent job on making a 90's classic, despite the source code being lost to time. But I will say that, I am a bit disappointed with how it's turned out and the issues that it currently has. Let's just hope the sequel's remake isn't as bad and stays true to the soundtrack, gameplay feel and look of the original.

i interpretted the menu music as a riff on the original final stage music, as that was the music used for the menu in the PC and Saturn versions
Yeah, I get the reference, but the menu music in the Saturn version is also literally just the music from chapter 4 but extended. There's a distinct lack of a song that has the same tone as the 'attract' theme from the arcade and Saturn versions.

Funky for my taste, even the opening cinematic music while very 90s made it sound more like a Saturday morning cartoon rather than the creepy gothic tune of the original
My thoughts honestly fluctuate depending on what mood I'm in, but I've generally made my peace with it. It's pretty good for what it is, but I treat it as a different game altogether.
i loved the remake...but it can replace the original? no. not even if its just perfect; the original has a special charm that cant be replicated and will last forever.
That's the part about this whole thing that stings the most. It's knowing that we'll never get a port of the original Arcade version. It's what inspired me to make my whole retrospective video.

The house of the dead 1 was the first game I ever played and now its my favorite game of all time. I was excited and hyped that the game would be good. When I played this remake, I gave up on the first level and started crying after seeing such a beloved gamefor me butchered in so many ways. The horrible controls was made me gave up the most, but there were so many more issues: the enemies were way too fast or way too far than it was in the OG, it takes way too many shots to kill creatures going after survivors while in the OG most of them died in 1 shot and the music is Just not there. Do you guys know how bad it had to be for me, a huge fan from the first game, gave up and started crying?

You know I always thought it was the other way round, the enemies in the original took an absolute hammering before dying, not so in the remake. And don't get me started on the godawful ragdoll deaths in the remake...

@@ZillennialRosa its not that they are more agressive, their speed is all messed up. They kill survivors way too fast while taking way more bullets. The last survivor in chapter 3 is borderline impossible in the remake.

On the PC the enemies don't melt, you can keep shooting their bodies and the bodies will keep reacting. You can shoot them backwards pretty far! its actually pretty funny
i just got this game for pc, i am going to try it with my oculus controller.
I have this game on the PS5 and it runs alot smoother than the switch port, there are still tiny moments when it hiccups but the load times are way faster on this version of the game. In honesty its a fantastic game, the graphics look great and its all very crisp, ive keep replaying it trying to go for the best high score lol its addicting and definetely worth it for new and returning fans. The ragdoll feature kept the game feeling fresh and its so fun blasting zombies away, I am just grateful to play this game again after all these years. They should def add a old school graphics mode as an update! Cant wait to play the House of the Dead 2 remake!!!

I would've done the same, but I needed to unlock the weapons for the review.
Something I have never figured out about these old Arcade cabinets is how come, despite all of today's processing power behind even commodity computers, we still haven't found a good way to reverse engineer the code to port it to a more modern programming language. Considering the ROM files are quite small, it would seem to me to be much less of a hassle to just figure a way to do that than to rebuild it from scratch.
I'm not the smartest when it comes to discussions of the technical side of things, but my guess is that there just aren't enough people that are interested in these particular platforms actively working on it. We at least have a working emulator that makes the original game playable on PC.
The more I listen to the music, the more I want to believe that remake OST actually doesn't fit for HoTD.
It would make sense if it's a game where cyberpunk alien from another galaxy is invading Earth.
I think this OST would have fit in a brand new HOTD sequel. It's just not quite right when put into this game.
Hey man have you heard of CarnEvil? It was an on rail zombie game from 1998. Honestly its kinda scary but pretty fun. Sadly (most likely because it came out the same year as hotd2) it was little known and forgotten. I recommend that you check it out and review it. 🙂
I have heard of CarnEvil. There used to be one at a local pizza place in my home town. I actually featured a bit of footage at the beginning of my HOTD retrospective. I don't think I'll make a dedicated video on this channel since I primarily focus on things I can talk about for at least 20 minutes, and which meant a lot to me growing up. HOTD was a much bigger part of my childhood. If I do talk about CarnEvil, it might be over on my second channel.

Yeah, I made a video on my second channel talking about the PC port. This video literally went up the day that the PC port and other console versions were announced. As expected, most of the issues I complained about here were specific to the Switch version.
I like the original game more to be honest but the new one is also fine

The best remakes are ones made by devs who made the original, RE1 Remake 2002 for example.
Didn't grow up owning Sega consoles, but I'd like to check this game out, especially if it gets a physical copy on consoles. Time Crisis was my favorite arcade shooter, but House of the Dead looks fun too.
Switch is getting phsical versions. I'm not sure about the other platforms, but I'd wait until the 28th since that's when the game comes to those other systems, including PS4, XBOXONE, and PC

Can't speak for Xbox, but PS4/PS5 physical copy might happen. Limited Run Games did a physical copy for their Panzer Dragoon Remake on PS4 and it was an open pre order, nice.
PS4 will have Move support too. Not a light gun, but close enough.
If Sega lost the original Source code for HOTD, makes me wonder if they lost the codes for their Dynamite Cop/Dynamite Dekka games too, especially the fun Sega Dreamcast one.

The remake overall lack some art sensibility, that becomes really clear if you compare to the OG. Here is 2 examples that shows this lack of sensiblity:
1- in the OG, the camera in the chariot fight is slightly looking upwards, helping to sell the idea that He is bigger than a normal human. In the remake, the camera placement makes him look small since it looks straight at him, He only looks big when He is near (wich is frequent skmce He doesnt suffer enough knockback from shots). In the OG, even when He was a little far from you, He looks bigger than you.
2- The f*****g ending is ruined in the remake. In the OG, we have the agents last words since the mission is over but sophie is "dead", só we get a sad music but it changes halfway through it to be triumpht, giving the feeling of "sophie is gone, but I finished the mission and curien's criation was stopped, I must go on" and after the credits song, you have the stage clear theme, wich is cheerfull. What the remake decided to do? They decided to have the same sad final lines from the agents, giving tha same sad ending vibes from the OG, but then plays the stage clear (thats is cheerfull and happy) and right after that it goes back to sad on the credits song. WTF?
The game does have some problems and the remix music isn't that good but maybe they will fix some of the issues in the pc version
The PC version is confirmed for later this month, and I'm sure it'll be better. We're also getting a version on PS4, XBOX One, and Google Stadia (I sound like an ad right now lol).

I'm really enjoying the game even with all the problems. It has inspired me to buy all the versions on the wii.
I'd recommend 2&3 on Wii and if you can, get Overkill for PS3 so you can use the PS Move controller and play that game with the better graphics and extra levels.
I really enjoyed this remake but there were a lot of issues that could be fixed. I’m hoping that for HoTD2 they take a lot of the criticisms from this first game and make it better. I’m looking forward to playing Remake again once the PS4 version is out and I can use the move controllers. Also glad you mentioned Zombie Revenge. It’s one of my favorite beat ‘em ups ever and I think you’ll enjoy the craziness it has on offer. Also you mentioned my biggest gripe with scarlet Dawn. The fact that enemies can take so much damage but drain your HP quickly really annoyed me with that game. Also the music is so lackluster in it. I live in a small college town where there aren't really arcades aside from one at our local mall and a small Peter Piper Pizza. My local mall had a HOTD machine a few years back, and I played the hell out of it. I took all the top high score spots.
Unfortunately, there were issues with the 2P button and gun so I couldn't play with friends. Not a lot of people played it so it didn't last very long at the mall arcade, and it was replaced with HOTD4 which was there for even less time. Currently there are no HOTD cabinets of any of the games in my town.
The 3rd one for the remake is so good
Yeah House of the Dead Remake is pretty okay. I understand the grief of not having a reference point since the source code is lost but for what it's worth they did a fantastic job. It's still a bummer when it comes to soundtrack, boss fights, and lack of things I was hoping for the game (such as expanded lore and more game modes), but overall I'm pretty satisfied with the result, and given Forever Ent. track record of updating the game constantly till it's good, like how they did when Panzer Dragoon Remake comes out, I'm certain some of these hick-ups will be fixed.
And to explain why the "feel" of House of the Dead 4 and Scarlet Dawn was like that, where enemies disintegrate instead of blood and gore, there's one reason why: CERO (Japanese ESRB) was formed not long after 3 was released and it regulated every single video game release since, including arcades. They are notorious for being extremely harsh towards blood and violence, hence why 4 and SD had toned down violence. In fact SD had a prototype gore system where you can shoot to see burned flesh and bone before disintegrate into bones, but it got scrapped.
This affects the Remake in Japan as well. In that version despite getting the 2nd highest rating, violence is still toned down and you can't even kill civilians there which means less achievements in that version as well.
Chunky gore is important to the series imo. Luckily the Switch is region free so Japanese players can download the US version.
@@ZillennialRosa Personally I wasn't that peeved that the gore is gone. In fact HotD4 ended up becoming my favorite in the series for how much of an improvement it was in terms of story, boss fights, set pieces, lore, and voice acting, and was looking forward to see where the series goes next (until Scarlet Dawn makes, imo, multiple major step backwards).
But I do admit that I miss the gore. Had CERO wasn't so strict about it we might still had it on the arcades, the only way gore might be staying in the series is through the console releases instead.
I too was waiting so long for this remake, I loved the original game as a kid but I wasn't willing to go out and buy a Sega Saturn just so I could play this game, sure the remake isn't as good as the original but it could have been a lot worse
The Sega Saturn version is also insanely expensive these days.

Great video, man! I watched your previous video a couple of days ago, and what a good timing to catch this one without waiting months for it. Really good analysis, I think it's really fair all in all. I personally really dislike the remake, but that's just because my enjoyment of the first game is really attached to my nostalgia, and thus the accumulation of all the subtle differences just takes me out of the experience. But I can grant that it's not an awful remake, it's actually amazing what they could achieve with the budget Sega gave them (so I'm more blaming Sega for the estate of the remake, not the devs, they really gave it their all).
That being said, this is coming from someone who loves HotD 3, and can't enjoy 4 or Scarlet Dawn, those two really soured my enjoyment of the series. So maybe my opinion isn't the popular one.

I'm hopeful that the direction of the series going forward will be better, kind of like how Resident Evil went back to its roots after not being a survival horror series for a while. Maybe Remake mods will get it very close to the arcade classic, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
@@ZillennialRosa 100% agree. The remake adding back zombie gore and cheesy dialogue, as well as satysfying gunplay really makes me hopeful. I think a new experience with Remake's direction, but with a bit more polish, would be very great.

This game runs great on pc with Siden Lightguns.
It truly is great on PC. I don't have a Sinden Lightgun, but I should make that investment sometime soon. If someone mods Wiimotes to work that's something I'd be able to use.
It could be the graphical limitations of of the original game, or maybe it's the color pallete, but the original has a much creepier vibe and I wish that the remake could've captured that better. I feel the remake is way more colorful and saturated and it kind of ruins it for me.
I get what you mean. The original had those striking greys, and all the blood always stood out against it. There's a very distinct charm to the look of the original.
Same this remake didn't go so well. Hopfully it'll at least make enough money to where they can keep updating this remake and make that HotD 2 remake the best it can be. Til then, I might just pick up the remake when it goes for sale on pc.
We're getting it on PC in about a week so I'm sure the community will add fixes on their own. More platforms means more sales potential.

My guess was that early on they were planning on bringing the game to other platforms. It came out on PC and other consoles in the same month, so it seems like those were the platforms they were actually targeting.

I did a review of the PC port over on my second channel. I'd say that version is worth picking up even at the current price, but I'm also a massive HOTD fan, so I would have payed $100 to play it.

im a bit late to this video and im not sure if the game updated since the release but it actually does support touch screen on the switch, that's how I usually go with my playthroughs because aiming with a controller is much more difficult compared to me absolutely destroying my switch screen with my frantic tapping
Touch screen support came with an update that released a few weeks ago, but it wasn't there at the time I reviewed the game.
A problem that I have with the game was I find the arcade version has a stronger sense of style, and I don’t mean people looking cartoony. The game has very high contrast, it had strong shadows but carefully selected colors to make sure everything stood out.
If you look at some of the environments, you start to realize a lot of stuff like railings being orange red, some walls being this vibrant but not overpowering yellow, a lot of environments being mostly a shade of blue with even some green lighting in there, and the last two chapters delving more into vibrant colors taking over almost the whole environment. There was a certain feel their use of contrast and colors that created both an amazing gothic atmosphere and gameplay environment where everything is readable.
In the remake, since they were using modern tech and going for a more realistic look, the models don’t have as strong shadows on them and end up looking more flat, while there are certain parts of levels where they don’t capture the same mood because the lighting engine ends up taking away the shadows and specific lighting of an area, like the bridge in front of the house, the hallway behind the double doors when you enter the house, the dining room with the murals, the hermit’s boss fight, and the entirety of chapter 3.
There have also been cases where they got colors wrong imo. When they do try going for the weirder colors, it looks more desaturated and overblown. Some sections had specific coloring to them like parts of chapter 2 and 3, where they turned parts that were blue in chapter 2 to a warmer color and parts that were red and warm in chapter 3 to a cooler color.
I definitely agree. The game has a higher polygon count, but is lacking in the style and visual clarity of the original.
One thing every zombie boss is overall ok except Magician
I'd say they're all good in different ways. Each one is challenging the first time through. Chariot is the only one I actively dislike, particularly in the remake.
Man, this game is rough. I wanted to really enjoy it, but the way the controls work with gyro... made me miss playing the PC version, which honestly makes me think there should have been a PC port of this remake. At least aiming and clicking with a mouse would be a lot more precise. I don't think the remake is bad, but it could have been so much better.

I don't think they're interested in makin Wii games in 2022, but to be fair they were making Just Dance games for the Wii not that long ago.
For me is meh.. is not the best remake. (Is like good and bad at the same time x,D)
1- Ok, the map is perfect i like it and the zombie models that's good.
2- The RELOAD VOICE IS so annoying.. i prefer the original one (House of the dead 1 - 2)
3- I know HOTD have the worst... voice acting. But the original one (House of the dead 1) is better for me.
4- The music in a nutshell we can say: "no... This is wrong" and The Magician one is PAIN.
The original one is like: "The last boss.. he's fast, he's strong and powerful. I will defeat you, monster!"
It's basically what I think of the new House of the dead.

Yeah, I made this video right as emulation started to become viable for this game. Fortunately, I now live in an area where I have much easier access to arcades. It's not something I'm planning on covering any time soon, but if I'm able to play all the routes, I may do a small video dedicated to Scarlet Dawn.

Why do people keep showing the performance mode gameplay while complaining about the graphics 🤦♂️
There's not much of a difference between the two modes visually, aside from some extra lighting effects. It still looks bad in quality mode, and the framerate problems are even worse there. Also, for a game like this, high framerates are important, especially since the arcade original ran at 60fps. Performance is the ideal way to play, but even then, it only runs at 60 sometimes, and most of the time it drops down a ton.
