  • US Air Dash 8-300 Inflight Engine Failure just after takeoff. The #1 engine started surging and as a precautionary measure the captain shut it down and we returned safely to the airport.A news crew was at the airport on another story and filmed the landing. You can see it here at this link • Plane Lands On 1 Engin...

    Not an engine failure, a precautionary shut down. I had the same thing happen to me a few months ago. It was the beta lock out switch which was unserviceable. This surging was the prop going in and out of feather. The beta lock out is designed to stop the pilot over speeding the prop by accidentally pulling the power levers back behind the gate, which could send the props into a huge over speed. It's happened in the past with the loss of the aircraft and pax/crew. That's when they fitted this back up. You'd have noticed it only started surging once the gear was up and locked. That's because there is a switch, (pseu) that tells the beta system it's in an inflight condition. The AFM now tells you to pull the fuel condition levers back to 900 rpm, (performance permitting), and cycling goes away. It certainly gets your attention though!

      @blampa 8 років тому +4

      +Mark S Hi Mark, what Jarv said is absolutely correct, you can hear the surging at the exact same time as the gear starts to retract, although the pseu switch he mentions senses an inflight condition upon the start of the retraction of the gear - not the actual stowage. It's at the same time the brakes are automatically applied to the wheels to arrest their spinning before stowage. The fact that he knows all about the beta lockout system on Q300's should tell you that he is a pilot though.

      @@haitiano1982 precautionary shut down. it would continue to run if you didn't do anything, With an engine failure, you don't get a choice.

    Some people feel unsafe on small turboprops, but I feel more safe. They can fly and land on one engine and if both go out.....well, a dash 8 could land in an empty Costco parking lot if it needed to.

    • @ZdrytchX
      @ZdrytchX 8 років тому +1

      Their electronic systems must be incredibly sensitive to mobile phone frequency harmonics then. Afaik there wasn't any successful proof that mobile phones actually intefere with aircraft electronic systems, perhaps a passenger had some sort of jammer or everyone making a call simultaneously (which isn't large for modern phones) or some other high-energy wave creating method.

    • @adventureairinc7355
      @adventureairinc7355 8 років тому +2

      You may forget there is another reason. 1. Just an unnecessary additional risk. 2. On some airplanes, when passengerns have there cell phones in normal mode you can hear the phones searching for network in the radio or headset of the airplane as a continues rattling sound. This not only just extremly annoying but also an additional risk and can cause to not beeing able to listen to the controllers or other airplanes carefully. You do not neccesarily crash of that single reason of course. But think of the Teneriffe accident which was as well caused by issues to understand each other on the radio (cause of a different reason, sure). They did a lot things wrong of course but the last line of defense was the communication. And this one failed. So interfering sounds in the radio may be the straw the break the camel´s back.

    • @NFreund
      @NFreund 8 років тому

      AdventureAirInc You do know, that the communications array of every plane (even a small cessna) is shielded against all radiation, except those in that narrow FM-Band? You can't compare that to your speakers on your desk...

    • @adventureairinc7355
      @adventureairinc7355 8 років тому

      +NFreund Not sufficient shielded for this. Cause it was not a part of the FAAs certification requirements. I know, cause I'm flying all these birds from a cessna up to larger ones. I experienced these issues and a lot of my colleagues as well.

    @weatherscience Engine is windmilling a little bit, but this is probably just because of some light sideward motion of the wind. A Turbine engine is really easy to move around. The engine blades are in feathered position so they don't start to windmill (windmilling produces drag). Normally you don't try to restart your engine unless you lose both engine, the engine didn't stop/was shut down for nothing ;)

  • @ROCKSTARCRANE
    @ROCKSTARCRANE 11 років тому

    Loss of an engine on take-off is the absolute worst case scenario in a twin engine aircraft, and almost always results in a crash with piston-engined aircraft. This pilot's skill combined with the power of the turboprop engines saved this flight....

    Engine probably was completely failed. The surging that can be heard and was mentioned was the NTS (negative torque sensing) system. This prevents the prop from going to flat pitch with loss of torque, which would be disastrous. Just because prop is still turning does not mean the engine is still running or producting thrust.

    The directional gyros are not affected by any magnetic field because of AHRS. Also, ipods and cellphones do not emit any radioactive or magnetic field as they are solid state devices. Even if they did, it wouldnt make sense to prohibit them just on takeoff and landing. The compass would be no more susceptible to the field on takeoff than it would be in cruise. They dont want you using them so that you maintain a sterile cabin environment in the event of an evacuation or emergency.

    They had a beta lockout failure. It was prop RPM surging, not turbine RPM. The procedure is to reduce prop RPM to 900, but this crew had some other indications the issue might have been more involved, hence the shut down.

    Dash 8's are great aircraft. It behaves the same on one engine. To those that think the electronic device caused the engine failure I can say impossible. The p/w 123 engines don't have anything fancy to run them. There is a computer but it has a manual mode which shuts the computer off. Computer is there only to adjust fuel scheduling to compensate for different altitudes and to sync engines together for smoother running. Most likely pilots got a indication that oil pressure was low and shut do

  • @lunchbag08
    @lunchbag08 15 років тому

    Thats whats awesome about a twin engine. If one goes down you still have the other. Losing it on takeoff is a little hard because the plane wants to yaw because of all the torque of just one engine on one side of the plane.

  • @aarperry

    we practice all types of emergencies including engine failures quite often and that also includes the passenger briefing (even though there are no passengers when this is done)...
    to be honest though a single engine failure really is no need for concern. When you lose all engines or have a structural failure is when your blood pressure should increase!

  • @jackyclaiborne2142
    @jackyclaiborne2142 7 років тому +1

    In this one, it's the port engine that's failing. Usually, it's the starboard engine that's most likely to fail, because the starboard engine gets the most wear and tear. The starboard engine is almost always fired up before the port engine. If I had a twin engine aircraft of my very own, I would for one flight fire up the port engine and then the starboard engine. It would be vice versa for the next flight. If I wanted to taxi on one engine to save fuel, I would follow the "POSH" rule, "port out, starboard home". That means I would use the port engine to move from terminal or hanger to runway, and then use the starboard engine to move from runway to terminal or hanger. That way, the engines would wear evenly, and could be serviced simultaneously.

    Was surprise that the flight deck crew did not notice a problem with #1 (via the gauges or the "sound & vibrations, etc), as they accelerated towards "V1". The guy with the camera certainly showed that there was a problem, with that engine, early on. Just surprised me. Great return to the airfield with an exquisite landing, considering the circumstances. Not critizing, just curious about what the crew was "experiencing", during their initial roll. Thanks.

  • @mmichaeldonavon
    @mmichaeldonavon 11 років тому

    After reviewing the video, you are absolutely correct - there doesn't appear to be a problem, as viewed through the guy's camera prior to acceleration. What I was "fooled" by (should know better :-) was the motion of the prop blades, which is really a feature caused by the video recording. "One" can't be right all the time, can "one". :-) Thanks, N-6395T

    actually the props are windmilling because you can never have a true 0 angle to the wind. the blades are slightly twisted for aerodynamic reasons. because of that they still windmill. the turbine that spins the prop is so far back wind wont reach it. not too mention then you have to spin the whole prop reduction system

    Left engine is the critical engine with prop spinning anticlockwise when viewed from the front due to corkscrew effect from the prop wash onto the vertical fin which provides a kind of stabilising effect should the right engine fail but again it was the left that pooped and the dash 8 does have a nice large tail and all conditions were favourable

    First of all I've been on several dozen flights for business. Some flight crews say its not a problem to take pictures and some say no. Either way the only electronics the could screw up a flight is the ones that send and/or receive radio signals which would hamper navigation instruments. Notice even though the plane hasn't stopped the flight crew says the use of cell phones are now permitted. Navigational instruments are not needed then.

    @188043 Nah, the aircraft has no reason to wobble. Without the left engine, that side of the wing has no thrust so effectively the right wing would travel fast than the left which would cause the right wing to lift, so right alieron will reduce the lift of the right wing because that flap moves up, therefore they balance out. Plane still flies normally. I've pracitced engine outs in a single engine plane and its not much different except you have toput the nose down to maintain airspeed.

    Airliners are required to have controllable multi engine aircraft under US regulations. And yes, Henery, depending on the placement of the engines and other factors, the engine out scenario is a handful for the pilot. In the big jets it is generally not as much of an issue, but the smaller the aircraft the issue is controllability in the event of a failure - and that issue becomes more and more difficult as weight and winds, load balance, temperature, and the airplane's performance in general is effected. While two engines provide excellent power and greater takeoff and cruise thrust, the loss of an engine in a light twin is a loss of not 50% of the power, but equates to 80% power loss. Not as significant with an approved transport like the venerable Dash 8 line, but in a Beech Baron, Piper Seneca, Cessna 310, etc., the pilot must react very quickly and correctly to control the aircraft from rolling over, and maintaining directional control and airspeed control. It can be visualized by imagining yourself paddling a canoe upstream with access to only one side of the canoe - you can only turn in one direction easily, and if you paddle too hard you will be swept around downstream. Returning upstream from that point is so difficult in many cases depending on various factors that it might be impossible. So it is with the light twin.

    Actually No, We can "Feather the prop", Ie. Stop it spinning.
    A Spinning prop, known as Windmilling, actually causes huge amounts of drag and makes it rather difficult to fly the plane straight and level as the plane will want to yaw/Turn towards the side with the shutdown engine. So in this case the Prop has actually stopped although you are correct, often when filming/recoding footage this effect does happen.

    @JGunlike" ..its an accident only if there was substantial damage to the aircraft and/or passenger during flight .. like crew members incapacitation in flight, in flight fires, a/craft collision..etc are examples ..an engine failure with no ramifications isn't a major incident to FAA. The FARs define "Incident" and "Accident" separately.

    Anybody whose played Microsoft Flight Simulator knows how ridiculously hard it is to fly one of these planes with only one engine. I crashed at least 50 times before finally landing one.

    Reasons all electronic devices are banned:
    Some cause radio interference
    In case of an emergency, you could loose grip and the device could hit someone else.
    It's a distraction. You aren't going to know what you need to do in an emergency if you aren't paying attention.

    The captain was doing his job, landing with one engine isn't all that difficult believe it or not. It's something you must learn to do in order to get your multi engine rating, and then in each aircraft that requires a type rating. Pilot just doing his job.

    Not ALL aircrafts are designed to fly on one engine. Per the FAR's Part 23, aircrafts under 6,000lbs an aircraft is NOT required to maintain a positive rate of climb on a single engine, with the critical engine inoperative...

    @naisi not true at all. it can and does interfere with the communications and instruments. handheld games, cellphones, pretty much anything emitting radio frequencies. i hear my own cellphone seeking service through the headset quite often - i'm just not required to turn it off.

    @naisi this function of showing people the way out is secondary to their primary function. as far as security a 130lbs woman with no weapon is not security. checking the seatbelt is a safety issue not security issue. the first attendants , stewardesses were overpayed drink slingers.. put there for the convenience of the passenger. you can safely operate a plane without them. I can find my own way to an emergency exit without an overpayed cocktail waitress. I've followed aviation most of mylife

    Beta Lockout (mandated by FAA AD) is such a pain to deal with. That system has caused damage to many prop assemblies after failure of this "protective" system... The system becomes active after weight-off-wheels and RadAlt above 50 feet AGL. It takes lightning fast reflexes from the crew to prevent an over-torque of the feathering prop at full take-off power...

    It is simply amazing that in today’s world not only does “everything” seem to happen with video recorded but there are two angles available. Not for nothing but the flight Captain’s request was violated with the very recording of this and you could be charged with a Federal crime. Were I to be in danger of dieing (again) in an air crash though I’d probably try and record it too and say to hell with the regulations!

    The captain and first officer who saved your life on this flight are probably earning a COMBINED total of $60,000 a year! But we go where there is work because it is better to be underpaid than unemployed! Also, any airplane used commercially is required to CLIMB well with one engine failed otherwise it wont be certified and put into service.
