My grandfather was a designer for the Dash 8, the Dash 7, and Twin Otter (DH6). I know little--if anything--about aviation. but I do remember him always telling me about these three planes. I have a room full of scale models he would always bring me. These planes and De Havilland in general have a special place in my heart as my grandfather was there for 40+ years...so in a way, it's part of my life. God I miss him.
That's an awesome story! I grew up flying these planes to visit my grandparents every year since I was born, so I also feel a special connection to these planes. Your grandfather was definitely a very talented designer for making these beautiful planes!
Major respect for not playing music during takeoff/climbout/approach/landing, love hearing the music of the PW-123A. The Dash 8/Q-series is the sexiest turboprop in existence. I've been on two Dash 8-300s and two Q400s, and I prefer flying on those over a jet. Yeah, they're _that_ good.
Hey AlexB, the newer Q200, Q300s as well as the Q400s have the "NVS" system, which electronically cancels out a lot of the noise. (GM has it in their trucks now.) I retired a few years ago from Bombardier as a "Flight Service Engineer" doing many ground runs on those aircraft. One issue that an older [person has is 'Tinnitis" which is a constant ringing or drone in one's ears. If you want to listen to what I'm hearing all the time, just listen to the Dash-8 at Idle. (785 RPM.) That's what I hear constantly.
Caribbean Airlines had these aircrafts and replaced them with ATR's. I can't tell you how much I hate it. The Q300 in particular had a distinct engine sound that I'll surly miss. The ATR is just plain boring to ride. As an aviation enthusiast I prefer the loud cabin and sounds of these engines. The Q400 is just as quiet as the ATR I love this video and the quality of the audio. keep it up😎
Brian Doone it’s a shame liat got rid of them as well. The ATRs feel a bit out of place at airports in the Caribbean but the q-300s feel like that is where they belonged
6:12 fuel cutoff and turbine shutdown very intricate plane you spool the turbine up first then the propeller to high idle and during shutdown it's the opposite you shut the propeller down first then the turbine engine such a unique plane.
Even in the cockpit I can hear the loudness of the engines, feels louder compared to other aircraft types (e.g. Boeing 737 NG and Max, Airbus A320, Boeing 777, etc)
Hector Zambrano yip. The power lever controls the manifold pressure. The prop lever controls the RPM. In GA plane Blue handle - RPM and Black- manifold. But if there is no blue handle black controls RPM. Unless it is computerized
It's a bit complicated. Power levers control engine torque in Alpha range and blade angle in Beta range. The prop levers will set governed RPM in the governing range, flight or ground idle, feather, and finally fuel cutoff when pulled back. No intake manifold in turbine engines, so no manifold pressure.
ok I have a question when a plane lands too reverse the engine dose the pilot pull down the camera was a little too high too see that or is there a lever that controls forward and reverse
curious...at beginning of video FO seems to flip lights on then CA immediatley turns them back off or vise versa. Seemed like he hada bit of attitude about it too! just wondering if thats correct what i saw
Oh no, these are professionals! Bad attitudes don't belong in the cockpit. It was simply the captain turning off the taxi light after the FO had turned on the ldg lights.
Shortly after landing the captain lets go of the control wheel to place his hand on the steering tiller, I can only assume but I'd say the aircraft is still travelling at 90 to 100kts and for about 4 seconds no one is holding to control column? I am a dash 8 operator in Aus and to me that seems odd, anyone have any thoughts on that? Or had experience with certain operators where this is normal? I'm not having a go at them, just curious.
I think the procedure is that the FO takes over the controls around that speed so the captain can control the tiller, but if he's supposed to hold the control column or not I don't know.. What I know for sure is that these pilots also operate the 100-series into some of the worlds most challenging short-field airports, so they sure have a lot of experience!
Yes ur right . At that speed the Captain should control the aircraft with rudder pedals as at high speeds the nose wheel moves 7 left and right with the rudder . So should not use the nose wheel steering ,can cause damage to it.
I dont know how pilots dont scream holy f$@*K ! we F#$&%&g flyiing everytime !!! Man and machine its a seriously awesome plane the Dash 8 and pilots like this make me love taking the plane big up!
why these scandinavian guys never communicate in the cockpit? i mean why dont they say stuff like v1, rotate, positive climb, gear up etc. i thought that was standard procedure
No standard operating procedures, no call-outs V1 rotate, positive rate Gear up nothing. The Captain is turning on the approach and flare lights and completion of the landing checklist . Also the F/O holding hands on the power lever on final ....... strange.
There is a lot of communication going on, but you can't hear it because of the noise... The FO is guarding the power levers in case a go around is needed.
94mafar Man, is it common to disengage the AP so late, like in the footage? I'm mean, clear of clouds, perhaps some turbulence on final, but not significant reason to do so, is it part of SOP?? and late flare ?! And did he miss the touchdown point?
Helio Macedo Not common i believe.. Widerøe pilots do a lot of hand flying, so not SOP but I guess he just didn't want to hand fly this early in the morning, who knows.. The -300 like the Q400 hardly flares on touchdown so perfectly normal there. About the touchdown point Widerøe pilots often ask for long landings on larger airports to exit the runway faster via the best suited taxiway.
94mafar I didn't know about the hard flaring of Q400, that's interesting...And about the hand flying, I asked because I've seen some videos from a brazilian pilot who likes (own preference) to disengage the AP only with runway insight and landing clearance, when the weather allow him to do so, wich is most of the times. Thanks and best regards from Brazil, fly safe ! ;)
Feather is a position of the propeller blade which has minimum drag e.g parallel to the flow of wind . So that the wind can easily pass through the blades causing minimum drag . Feather position is usually used at starting engine and mainly during engine failure to reduce drag on one engine.
Great video, but please without music the next time. Not only that IMO music never can beat the noise in a cockpit and the sounds of the engines, but also, since people have so many different musical tastes you will probably always only please a minority. I'm pretty sure this will be for the costs of likes. Anyway you have got a like from me, for the pictures, not for the music. :-)
If I was a pilot damn I’d feel like the shit flying this plane . Especially take off I definitely would think I’m the man hahaha such an awesome aircraft
I love that sound when the propellers come out of the beta range and slowly spin up at takeoff
Darude-sandstorm
motion2k Wtf is beta range??
I thought it was just me :-)
What is the red button that he keeps tapping on the steering yoke?

My favorite airplane. The sound of those engines is music to my ears!

The Dash 8 is such a fascinating plane
Never flew in a Dash-8. Flew in the Dash-7 from LAX to Monterrey once.
I am so proud to have flown on a Dash 8 Q300 years back to Cox's Bazar! My favourite turboprop!
One of the best cockpit tkof/lndg I have ever seen !
Thanks! Glad you liked it :)

One of the best Dash 8 vids yet .... you captured It all !
1:00 is easily one of the best dash 8 spool-ups on UA-cam
We fly two ex-Widerøe Dash-8 311V at Jazz, tail 327 C-FRUZ and tail 328 C-FSOU! Love that video!
I love that plane and its sound. Thank you for sharing.
dash-8 is a beautiful aircraft, and love the view out of the cockpit, thanks for sharing
Looks like a very experienced crew. Nice video.
Love this video and LOVE that you turn off the music under takeoff and landing, the sound of the Dash is magnificent!
Fantastic footage!!!
Two very officiant pilots there. Nice vid!
Awesome video! Beautiful aircraft. Thanks!
It's interesting to see the procedures of different airlines, flying the Dash 8.
Super, this is professional work.
My god all that shaking, I'd pass out from fear, my nerves are already on edge just watching

love the sound of the aircraft engine
Cool video. It's awesome to see the "slight" differences in operational procedures and flows, from what I'm used to (on the Dash 8 100/300 we fly)
Which Airline do you fly for?
Haha, that's gotta be one of my favorite planes. The sounds are just insane! Recently took a Q200 PHL-ISP and it was really cool.
Amazing it looks pretty good.
Was on a flight from Philadelphia to Ithaca ❤✔ Loved the experience 👊
Wow, such amazing lady Dash 8
wonderful video... beautiful take off and landing..
1:04 eargasm! Listen to those engines singing
Nice cockpit that plane must be brand new
+CaLxRoyalty Well it's actually 25 years old.
Just have to have that friggin music kick in.
ya right eh? blasts your ears
Thanks so much for sharing this !!
Gosh how I miss this plane with Piedmont airlines!! I only have 40 hrs in one but I'd give anything to go back!!!!
1:01 the loving sweet spot 😍
Great video.
i love these cockpit views :)))
i was the 600th sub! Great videos you make!!!
Do we have to have that noise/music, whatever you call it?
Caribbean Airlines had these aircrafts and replaced them with ATR's. I can't tell you how much I hate it. The Q300 in particular had a distinct engine sound that I'll surly miss. Brian Doone same the ATRs were never the same as the dash
The dash 400 is too much aircraft for liat fortunately. The dash is my favourite.
What is the red button that he keeps tapping on the steering yoke?
6:12 fuel cutoff and turbine shutdown very intricate plane you spool the turbine up first then the propeller to high idle and during shutdown it's the opposite you shut the propeller down first then the turbine engine such a unique plane.
This is the air craft brought me a special passenger ....And she’s my wife for 20 years now !
Perfect landing ;)
That music came on I thought for sure they were gonna do a loop de loop. 😉
great video
spectacular video !!!!

O toque no solo foi sensacional!
Great landing!
I have only flown once in a Dash Turbo Prop. The acceleration on take off seemed quicker than a conventional jet airliner.
Professionals - do it day in and day out
Very nice! :D
Great and professional
Nice! Is it just the microphone, or are they not talking to eachother?
Too much noise to hear the talking without a headset
This video is a photo on Airliners.net.
Clarkey Aviation Oi Oi Oi oi
Nick Aviation HD Oi you've never been on a DHC8!
Videos are not photos. Stop confusing me
Fan of the sound too
I love I JUST LOVE IT! :D
Even in the cockpit I can hear the loudness of the engines, feels louder compared to other aircraft types (e.g. Boeing 737 NG and Max, Airbus A320, Boeing 777, etc)
That's because is a turbo prop. The planes you listed are jet powered engines.
Lovely
Great video, music is different but if you like that cool!!
I love your aircraft
why did you keep hitting the autopilot button as you were landing?
+TupolevPilot I'm not sure, but I think it was because the disconnect warning didn't sound as expected. I'm not the pilot by the way.
+TupolevPilot too much mercury in the brain from eating whales. Kept forgetting that he pushed the button....
+robinfist lol
cool video :)
Do they put newer pilots on these kinds of planes, or 737's?
They only fly Dash 8's. The newest pilots are put on the smallest -100's and Q200's flying short field operations!
Reminds me of the Twin Otter seaplane...
So the propeller RPM increases with the PROP lever, but the jet turbine with the throttle!?!?!
Have a look at 3:30

Reverse is the far aft quadrant on the console. Some airplanes have a Beta Range before reverse.

Im going crazy evry time i go on a dash 8
Not everyone likes the music, but I think it added a nice flare the video at altitude
0:34 Who else loves those chimes?
so awesome..
Thanks. Like It
:)
Man i miss that plane
Didn't U.S. Air have these? (until there was no more U.S. Air)
I dont know how pilots dont scream holy f$@*K ! we F#$&%&g flyiing everytime !!! Man and machine its a seriously awesome plane the Dash 8 and pilots like this make me love taking the plane big up!
where were the take off call outs
1:02 asmr ❤
So that is around 2.5 to 3 minutes of manually flying the plane ,from TO to landing.......scary....
what song is it?
You're welcome to read the description!
94mafar sorry, i still not used with the new youtube interface.
why these scandinavian guys never communicate in the cockpit? i mean why dont they say stuff like v1, rotate, positive climb, gear up etc. i thought that was standard procedure
Obviously the engine noise is too loud for any talking to be heard on camera, and the camera was not connected to the intercom...

Thanx buddy
Sounds there will never be much on the CVR.....
Looked a little fast and long.
Those MLG props!!!!! XD
Indeed... a very quiet aircraft... "quite noisy"... kkkkkk
Ce sont des pros, ils ne se feraient pas avoir par une mitrailleuse ces gars là.

What a dumb comment
格好いい~!
Hate those old Dash-8s...noisy as hell. Now the Q400 is a pleasure to fly on.
Nothing wrong with the Q300
Yep... The 200's and 300's sound great, never heard the 100's and 400's
1:03
good music.
If I was a pilot damn I’d feel like the shit flying this plane . Especially take off I definitely would think I’m the man hahaha such an awesome aircraft
Co pilot is wearing glasses. is this allowed?
sure
too many buttons.. i guess being a pilot isnt an easy job i guess
My name is AGBATUTU karo when I grow up I would fly like them
An American named Timothy caused the most damage to buildings in terrorist attacks in thr US before 9/11
It was good till the music started
i dont like to see pilots switching the autopilot off just before landing, its kinda cringe
It depends on the wind speed and other factors. Pilots have no problem landing with auto pilot disabled.
