Dude this ended up looking amazing! Thx for a fun collaboration!
Thanks Emil! This was too much fun but next time a week works just fine for me😂
Thanks for doing this for us guys, really appreciate all the knowledge you guys share with us. I’m new to crafting and just finishing up my first set of tiles but these videos make me really excited to get into more advanced stuff like painting miniatures. Thanks again guys, keep up the awesome content.
Holy hell! Forget the three builds, the winner of this challenge is that sexy snowy glamour shot!
Lol haha thanks Jeremy. First time trying out that green screen thing!!

I'm proud of you boys!
We will tell them 😊
First of all: Airbrushing is not cheating. The only people that say that, are the ones who refuse to buy one.
Second (if you would like some feedback) : You used too many warm colors for a mini thats in a cold environment. Try to mix your leather and skin colors with a slight bit of blue or grey.
Funny you should mention that but I actually intentionally went with some warm colours to change things up a bit. I was even considering the pale blue skin route initially but since it's been done before just tried to go with something a bit diferent. Still added the classic blue into the clothing etc. But you're right, could have maybe gone a little less warm with the leather and skin tone. :)

Speaking of Brent. I printed the Goober Yeti to go with the running Brent from Titan Forge. I'm going to make a small display for Brent running from Brent.
Hahaha. That is epic. I should do the same 😅
Gonna accidentally touch on some psychological triggers for Brent there. lol
Soon all the models will be Brent and the world will be populated by him and his soothing voice. LoL
Squidmar brought me here. The quality kept me here. Definitely subbed!!! Great job.
Airbrushing isn't cheating! I've always been an advocate for 'use the tools you have to get the results you want' and haters be damned!
Heeeeey I think you might be right there. Thanks Ryan!!!
No way the airbrush is cheating. I think most hobby painters these days have one or multiple.
Found my way here from Jeremy & Emil's channels - now have to watch more . . . (but I give the win to Jeremy for shortening build time for dad stuff . . . and polar bear)
Haha, I hear ya. Yeah Jeremy definitely made the right call on that one. Thanks for stopping by and hope u stick around!
@@RealTerrainHobbies It was great seeing you involving your kids in the project as well - their stuff looked really great.
Wow! Very impressive guys! 6:40👍
Your dad did a pretty good job too!😜
Hey thanks hehe! I showed the lads you comment and they had some big smiles. :)
‘I’m not a painter...’. Yeah, neither was Michelangelo. 😂. That looked fantastic! I can only dream of turning out something so cool.
Great video and some awesome tips! Glad this was recommended to me. Totally subscribed and can't wait to check out your other videos!
Awesome! Thank you! There's lots of vids on the channel so be sure to check out some of the playlists. Thanks for the sub! :)
Hey Neil! 10:11 You mention another youtuber (Cathy Mallot?) but didn't link her page!
Oh right! I’ll get that fixed😬

@@RealTerrainHobbies Awesome thanks!
I love these collabs. You guys should make this a regular thing you do once every three months
I personally Loved your tent build video
Agreed!! And thanks on the tent build :)
Awesome job, well done. Wish I looked that fresh after a 24 hour shift. Really good snow affects, I'm thinking about doing something similar.
Great job, always good to go out of your comfort zone. I wouldnt say using an airbrush is cheating either, looking forward to the next project.
Well Done, I really enjoy your videos. Any suggestions on where to score some large cedar chunks like you have there. No Cedar trees around my house.
I like Jermey and watch all his stuff but your stuff blows his away. You got this.
Best part of the video was your boys joining you. Their models would look good on any table.
Wow.... Can't wait to see what else you make. I like your style.
This was awesome to see you step out of your comfort zone a little and do some speed work. Turned out fantastic too! Now I have to go watch the other guys vids
Thanks James :) Yeah it was certainly out of my comfort zone. Fun to do though and worth it in the end being able to watch all three guys' takes on the challenge.
Love this! I think you really made it look amazing. You are a WAY better miniature painter than you give yourself credit for. The terrain piece is also incredible!
Thanks man, appreciate it.☺️
Watched the other two vids. I think you won this one.
Using an airbrush isn't cheating.
This is my first video of yours to watch, I found you via some other model makers. Love the work. I'd love to get one of those printers one day. They look such fun
Hey very cool. Welcome on board and hope you stick around! Plenty more vids on the channel for ya🙂
What a great build and an awesome project. We'll done. 😎
This is AMAZING! I love it.
10:37 missed opportunity, not saying 'gonna tackle this head on'...
LOL 😂. Dang that would have been good...
Hiya, first off, wonderful diorama! I know you mentioned you struggled to print the cape without lines - there could be a few factors in that, but assuming the supports/exposure are good, the biggest factors are likely your lift speed and your lift height.
3DPrintingPro has done a few more detailed videos on those parameters, but the TLDW is to set your lift speed to ~40mm/min and your lift height to ~8mm for larger printers and bigger prints, as it helps combat peel forces of larger cross-sections and FEP deformation from a bigger print area. Hope that helps!
Hey thanks for the tips. I'll give those parameters a shot and see what happens with this next one. fingers crossed!
@@RealTerrainHobbies No worries! Just to clarify, I meant ~40mm/min (not seconds, oops). It will slow down prints a bit, but it should hopefully stop lines like those, and also helps when printing more delicate supports on minis. I'd highly recommend checking out 3dPrintingPro's channel if you haven't already, it's a goldmine of printing advice:)
Wow love it! You are very talented!!
You have hands down the best “glamour/reveal” shots of your pieces. Really good work!
I found the tent video really interesting and it definitely showcased some techniques I’m interested in trying!! The style of your pieces is really fantastic
Thanks man. And glad you enjoyed the tent video haha. Appreciate the kind words. :)
Real Terrain Hobbies I love the museum quality and realism of your pieces. My dream wargaming table would be made up of pieces in your style. Really top notch stuff dude.
Thanks for doing this for us guys, really appreciate all the knowledge you guys share with us. WoW
Very nice work! Love a little friendly competition🤘🏼 What about another mash-up between you 3... say a diorama build using NO BRUSHES🤔 You can only use your fingers, toothpicks, etc - basically anything BUT a brush or airbrush. What say you?😏
That came out amazing and that ending was perfection! 🙌🏻
3:20 bro you saved my paints
Airbrushing is not cheating! BTW...the whole thing looks awesome! Well done. :)
1st Place: Neil (For an excellent piece slightly out of your comfort zone)
2nd Place: Emil (Because 1st place was taken)
3rd Place: Jeremy (Sadly I feel, caught on the back foot, not on his 'A' Game)
All excellent works, illustrating how intense this type of crafting actually is.
Well done all three of you! All winners in my mind.
You are too hard on yourself about your mini painting! You did a great job! And including what you think are mistakes helps the rest of us. (And having the axe break really makes some of us feel better about all the repairs we need to do LOL.)
Thanks Kat!! You're too kind :) And yeah, that dang axe! I honestly just broke it again this morning moving it around to get my thumbnail pic lol. I dont know what it is with this blasted model!!!😅
Sorry, typo! Thanks KaT! ;)
Absolutely amazing! Great paint job! I love your long vids on bigger dioramas but this was just as exciting! You should do more of these like 1pc statuesque type of dioramas as well! Came out very cool!
hi, as french i don't understand what's a diorama, could someone explain please ?? :) btw, what you doing looks fantastic !!!!
Love the scene. Pretty new to your channel [I liked the tent video lol] and really enjoy your work. Thanks for sharing.
Haha thanks for liking the tent video!!
This was awesome dude! You've got a new subscriber here! I really love this build and will be watching more of your videos! I know that this is almost a year old so I have some catching up to do! You have Black Magic Craft to thank for leading me to your channel because of the challenge but I'm here now for life! LOL.
Loving it, cant beat passing on knowledge to the kids, also can't wait for my kickstarter brushes to arrive....
Hey man, amazing work. Could I do a suggestion? You might get back to this model and use the cape's lines in you favor making a kilt/ tartan pattern, as a kind of a patchwork hiding it.
Very nice! Snow effects are tricky but you pulled it off great. Using an airbrush is in no way cheating. Cheating would be having someone else do the painting and you taking credit for it. So, yeah...use that airbrush.
Came here from Black Magic craft but got to say that you won this challenge! Very good job and definitely worth the subscribe.
Back in the 80s and early 90s when I was doing both model train and dnd dioramas. I got a tip on how to make snow scenery by using a small cooking drain screen sifter to get a better coating on my dioramas. After I read an article in Military Modeler they used Baking Soda to create their snow scape. I used it once on one of my dioramas and I really liked it for it looked very real and it was cheaper than having to go out and buy all these expensive materials for diorama making. Plus everyone has it in their home for baking. For after a while it all adds up and can get expensive fast aside from having to buy your figurines. Also mixing the baking soda up with a diluted amount of water and Elmers PVA glue works good to make your fleck paste. Once you have the thickness you want for your paste you can just brush it on the areas you want to show the large amounts of accumulated snow and let it dry.
Then before I do anything else I lay down enough newspaper or anything else to spread out I have to protect my work space for easy clean up. I place my diorama in the middle of my spread and I grab my cooking wire screen strainer sifter and pour in some of my baking soda and several inches above my diorama slowly sift the baking soda over my piece. Once I have enough coverage over the whole thing I want. I grab my spray bottle that has diluted Elmers PVA glue in it that has the consistency of instant milk and I mean really diluted. And then I continue to lightly spray over the diorama to seal the rest of the sifted baking soda down onto my diorama so it doesnt fall off. I let it set to dry. Once its dry I can remove it and since youll make a big mess with the sifter and the baking soda you can collect up the loose baking soda off your newspapers etc and collect it into a container which that can be reused later for your fleck paste again.
The kids did a great job! Must run in the family haha! Great job on the build, as always. You do fantastic work.
Nice work. I'm curious in what part of a hardware store you'd find steel construction wire?
It's used for twisting rebar pieces together. It was kind of in an awkward spot so just ask one of the attendees where they keep the rebar wire.
@@RealTerrainHobbies Thanks!
That's some beautiful work there. I've never done a snow theme but this little build challenge/collaboration is making me want to try it. I just watched Jeremy's, which was awesome as well. Going to watch Emil's next.
BTW I thoroughly enjoyed your tent video. I've done a few myself and I liked your structure composition. I only did some basic A-frame tents for a camp/long rest scene. You've inspired me to revisit that project.
Thanks man and yeah for sure check out Emil's vid too! Also, glad you enjoyed the tent vid too hehe. Good luck on your next tents, although I'd gotten quite a few comments in there that baby wipes are the way to go when it comes to making cloth/canvas effects. Something to maybe try!
Between the amazing models and his paint jobs makes me want to get into D&D so bad
Hola mo pude ver el vídeo y llalovi y está asombroso😱🖒🖒👏👏👏
Looks amazing. looking forward to he next project.
You are the most fortunate miniatures/sculptor/painter to have the two younger experts to work along side you. Pride!
Fantastic project and such a wonderful collab! So nice you got some time with your boys during that process as well.
You guys say: oh we could have done better with more time!
Me trying build it over a weeks worth: Pile of trash.
I'm just striving to be as good as your kids with my mini painting. Wow.
small note that if you are making wet pallet yourself not all parchment paper is good as some of them are waxed and will not let the water through
and airbrushing is not cheating it is a tool as a drybrush or a paintbrush
Wet Palette Tip: More water and more paper under the parchment. A sponge would be even better. Keep the sponge/paper very wet and the parchment dry on top. :)
your snow became bumpy as well, so did mine when I made snow diorama.
idk why it does that.
Looks awesome man, well done
I really like the warmer colours on the mini, they make him stand out so nicely from the cold environment :) that bark trick is awesome!
Did you have any imperfections in the model from the supports?
The whole talking part is included in the 24 hours? :P
350 for drying out the bark? Doesn't it burn??
Incredible paintwork.
Definition of a diorama.....
1. It must tell a story. A fig standing on an elaborate base is NOT a diorama.
haha, to each their own😆
Using the Stronghold music, epic mini - subbed
Thanks so much for the mention! I’m so glad you found the videos useful and the end result is stunning!
Thanks Kathy. I have really enjoyed watching your content throughout the years. Love what you're doing there and hope you don't ever stop! YT can be a finicky thing and mess with us so hope you keep finding the joy in this amazing little hobby we have and keep on making great content in the years to come! All the very best. :)
Real Terrain Hobbies thank you so much! Yes, YT is finicky but it allows me to do what I love so that’s a plus point.
Looking forward to what you do next too.
Never thought of using a urine bottle for the doctors for my figures before great size for it lol I'll need to visit the docs a few times now for test bottles lol
Funny how the two guys from Canada did a snowy diorama xD
Man, that is awesome that you and your kids are getting into the hobby together, these will be good memories for them when they get older.
that is awesome
nothing like a awesome 3d printed model and a amazing handcraft terrain
What a fun vid and a terrific result. Great to see
That’s so epic, I really need to get a 3D printer!!
Dat boi needs to just be dunked in some sepia wash.
Amazing film making on top of an amazing 24 hour build!!
Wasn’t subscribed but somewhat knew of your channel recently. I thought it funny though when you asked for us to check out your last video. In my mind I was like, “ already planning to”! Definitely a sub now, awesome job!!
Haha, awesome man. Thanks and glad to have you on board!
I am very happy you are teaching your sons how to paint minis. :)
Amazing job sir! Proud of those kids too!
Thanks Cory :)
Real Terrain Hobbies I hope my boys want to enjoy the hobby one day as well.
Okay, the paint jobs your KIDS did is better than I was a year a go. I'm north of 50 and have been painting since their age. Good teaching tips really matter! Also, in fairness to myself, when I started, I had access to Testor's gloss enamels only...
Ouch haha. Yeah those would be tough to paint decently with on a mini. And yeah, they did so well with those basic techniques! I'll be sure to pass on your compliments to the lads :)
Turned out great, Neil! 👏👏👏
Where do you get the bark material from?
The lads did well with all those minis...well done boys!
Great diorama and for someone that is not good at painting you did a brilliant job, oh by the way...airbrushing is not cheating!
Great job, excellent video and I hope you get some sleep with all that coffee in your system lol
lol thanks Dave! I did manage *eventually* to get some sleep :)
Really wish that I had access to a good resin 3d printer...stuck using the pla ones the library has, and the lab there is shut down at the moment. The mini you're doing would make a great frost giant...
Thanks man. Yeah they're really nice. At least 3d printing has gotten more affordable over the years. Save up for one of the small ones if you can, and keep an eye out for a sale!
Beautifully done....❄️👏🙂
Using an airbrush is not cheating. It's a tool to be used to get a result.
Only noticed the lines in the cloak in the glamour shots at the end. If you're willing to take that challenge you might be able to hide them in some embroidery. Either painted on or sculpted. Or maybe you could even use some lace detailing, like they use for dollhouses and dolls.
Hey thanks for the advice! I was thinking I should have used some Apoxy clay. But I like the idea of this lace detailing :)
Airbrushing != cheating
your paint job looks good, don't be ashamed of how you got it done
Thanks man :)
Awesome build!!! Just FYI... Another trick to give a winter, encapsulated, ice-look on trees is to use a clear hot-glue to coat the branches.
Incredible diorama! From that first reveal shot I had the Skyrim soundtrack playing in my head. Absolutely nailed it!
I feel like no one is touching on how great it was that you included your kids in your miniatures/ diorama. It was just really touching and nice to see. Great stuff!!
I’m surprised you’re saying the tent video isn’t doing so well. That was insane! One of my favourite videos from all of the terrain artists I follow.
Woww
I am amazed at how easy you make the snow effects look. I'm not saying it was camera tricks. The method is brilliant in simplicity, and amazing in presentation. Your videos really help my landscape work, thank you!
-
With the gift of perfect hindsight, you could have capitalized on those deep print lines on the cloak and done a band of another color, like some kind of heraldry from the original fabric.
Outstanding build. Any chance you can use automotive spot putty to fill the lines in the cape?
OOh! I'll have to take a look at that. I was wondering would I could have used to fill those in
When you have to add shitty after effects to try to make your model better. Let the work speak for itself instead of this tacky shit.
Comment of the day!🥇🥇🥇🤣 I'll do what I want thanks!😜
This deserves more views
Great job man , it looks awesome !
Incredible!! So jealous of your skill and eye for detail!
