- Key Cavern is the third dungeon in Link's Awakening, and it is pretty darn good! Let's talk about all the reasons why!
Also this will be the last time I complain about inventory management in this game, I promise.
Also Kanalet Castle is here!

Key Cavern has my favorite dungeon theme in this game.
I remember Kanalet Castle was very interesting when I was a kid. It was confusing as to why it was even there.
I'd say that, hands-down, Color Dungeon is my favorite theme besides Ballad of the Wind Fish. It makes me feel like an adventure is about to end and I'll never be able to experience it again.
I always thought of those rocks as jelly, but now I realize they pop like balloons!
Thank you for this dungeon series btw, and for taking the time to analyze each and every one of them!
I think they are closer to rocks in the original. Not sure though.
How is this remake 5 years old 😭
oh no
I always thought of those rocks as crystals of some sort. In general I absolutely love the 2019 updated soundtrack, with the exception of the dungeon boss theme, which I think removed a lot of the punch that the original had. Key Cavern is where this game starts to take off a little bit more, but in general I think the game does a great job with ascending difficulty and complexity as you progress.
I agree!
I definitely interpreted them as crystals when I played the gameboy original some years ago, but then the switch remake adds a distinct balloon sound/visual to breaking them so that’s what I’m going with now haha
@@CaptBurgerson I mean, they definitely jiggle a bit.
The German name for this dungeon is Teufelsvilla ("Devil's mansion"). No idea why, though.
Maybe 'key' is a slur in German.
You called those things balloon rocks, I called them jello rocks lol
Also great video.
My six year old loves your Dungeon Design videos, ha! We often pull up the compilation videos and playlists during screen time!
I'm so glad I stumbled onto this channel. Thank you for the quality content!
I actually found this boss to be a challenge, because the knock-back from trying to split him in two puts you out of line, and he reforms quite quickly - and he takes up a huge part of the boss room. Not only that, but the bouncing eyes that make up his second form are very fast, and if you aren't observant enough, they can get the jump on you when they come down from the ceiling. Also, you're still getting used to the Pegasus Boots at this point, so boosting around the room could lead to unintentional accidents. But of course it's going to be easy on future playthroughs.
I love your dungeon design videos :D A lot of the times, when I play, I'm too in the moment, too focused on finding how to move forward, to really analyze some of the smaller details and design choices. You point out a number of things in each video that I hadn't noticed or wouldn't have thought of, and it gives each of the games a new life for me ^__^ Thank you!
Thanks as always for this insightful and calming series :) Love how you're always able to make me realize or appreciate things about the dungeons that I didn't think about before^^ Much love from Germany✌🏽
Another great video. Nostalgic looking back at one of the first games
I love your analysis
There's so many good things to say about this game in general, and this dungeon is very cool.
I'm still loving the comparisons between the different versions of the game .
Excellent breakdown! It’s neat to see how comprehensive your analysis of dungeon design has come
Also, loved some of the editing! Wish I knew it myself 😂
Thanks Wiz!! Means a lot my friend
I'm going to defend Bottles Grotto. It is linear but still confusing in a claustrophobic way. The last puzzle sort of hints at destroying enemies in a certain order but it is very vague. Key Cavern was fun because keys are everywhere but the dungeon itself is fairly easy to understand.
Slime eye took SO LONG to kill for me, i never got the timing right to break him apart. It was a pain. Easy, but a pain.
the remake fixed a bug where one of the doors relocks after entering turtle rock. that could be why the story beat was able to be removed. in the original you could not advance to angler's tunnel until completing the dungeon because the honey comb was required for the pineapple while in the remake you just need to reach animal village and the honey comb can be obtained before completing it as well. overall this dungeon is interesting in how it is the only post alttp dungeon that gives you an extra small key but this is to prevent the rooms from being missable.
Woo! I had gotten the game from my mother in-law a couple weeks ago, and 100%ed it due to seeing these videos.
Now I'm chowing down the Oracle games.
So good!
Thats gonna be great, i can feel it ✌🏻
Early!!! I love your videos a lot :) I listen to them while at work or doing art!
Slime eye is easy... But this whole game is pretty easy. In fact, just because of only 3 hearts... My only danger of dying was the first dungeon. But, alas, I got through it and eventually got the prime ending. So, I was happy. Plus, all of the secret cutscenes were cool. Nice video bud!
You get to keep one of the keys as a memento.
Whenever you get to the Oracle games, Id love to see your thoughts on how they handled item management in those with the same restrictions.
The pegasus seeds are one example, being turned into an optional consumable in place of the item in Link's awakening, decreasing the items you need actively to be in your slot.
I also swear the loading vetween the pause menu is faster in the oracles.
Overall I would say that the oracle games handles its item management about the same- maybe even worse since with the Pegasus seeds, you still have to pause and equip them, but then there’s an extra sub menu going into the seed satchel to select them. So it’s even more UI interfacing needed
This was a good video
I love how much you point out the music bc it’s just in the background for me and I wouldn’t have noticed!
Do you hafta use blender for this series just curious?
I haven’t used blender at all for any of Link’s Awakening’s dungeons yet lol
personally the red devil in the last dungeon was the easiest boss to me. you can just stand where you entered the boss room, then spam the fire rod. when you hit it once, just spam further and he breaks.
Okay wow ...we get it Capt you HATE this game sorry not every Zeldah game has the Rock Salt Collector Achievement! 🤭 Great video as per usual
Haven't been this early in a while!
Key cavern is overall a good dungeon and a good step up from the previous two. The abundance of small keys is really satisfying.
However, the part with the bombable walls brings up one of my least favorite things about the remake. In the remake, Key Cavern is the only place that has unmarked bombable walls. Every other bombable wall in the game that was unmarked in the original now has added cracks. This particularly ruins some puzzles in dungeons 6 and 8. No idea why they decided to leave the walls in Level 3 unmarked but add cracks to all the others.
for those who don't know what tat last key is here for, i have something to tell you
me neither
Am I the only one who thought the Monkeys pooped a bridge when they were younger and played it on the Game Boy?
What do you mean “pooped a bridge”??
@@CaptBurgerson LOL in the original, after you give the monkey the banana outside of Richard's castle, he says "let's repay him!" Then all of the monkeys swarm and jump around until the bridge appears under them. You can't see them carrying sticks so I thought it.... APPEARED under them by way of their own natural processes. *OH, and afterwards he says "ok, monkey business done!"
Personally I find Moldorm the easier boss, so I just slap em at the end of my Dampe dungeons bc it's cake with the feather
Same, moldorm every time
I'm sure that's not the easiest boss. I'm sure there's a fish who no word but "trivial" and "boring" can describe it.
Yeah, hence the text on screen at 16:09 😂
wait a second, was that music from ori, and the will of the wisps?
Hell yes it was
i know my video game music!
Wait did the original Key Cavern have a second (basement) floor?
I don’t think it did 🤔
Great vid btw, can’t wait until you get to the Face Shrine, Eagle’s Tower and Turtle Rock
Yup, the map / dungeon layout was not altered between versions
I always forget Key Cavern has multiple floors. I always think Eagles Tower is the only one. Those two dungeons gave me A Link To The Past vibes so they weren't two bad. I actually struggled in the dungeons that rely on underground tunnels. Turtle Rock is one of the toughest dungeons I've played and I even struggled with Bottle Grotto.
@@CaptBurgerson i could’ve sworn it was one floor but just spaced out. 🤔
I KNOW Eagles Tower is multi floored.
I must be going insane.
@@zeaferjones1404 did the gb and gbc versions specifically say that Key Cavern had 1f and 2f? Eagles tower it did.
The only struggle with bottle grotto for me was the order of which enemies you had to defeat to get the cellar door to open
@@OmegaFox09 Face Shrine also gave me a lot of trouble. It is funny because after I finally beat Bottles Grotto I started to get in a rhythm where I beat Key Cavern, Anglars Tunnel and Cat Fish Maw pretty easily. Then Face Shrine smacked me in the face. The difficulty jump from Cat Fish Maw which was a fairly simple dungeon to Face Shrine was crazy. Eagles Tower was a tough challenge but a fun one. Face Shrine and Turtle Rock just confused me.
Balloon rocks? Aren't they just crystals? 😅
I definitely interpreted them as crystals when I played the gameboy original some years ago, but then the switch remake adds a distinct balloon sound/visual to breaking them, like they’re all rubbery and they have a resounding “pop” so Balloon Rock is what I’m going with now haha
Last time you complain about inventory management, sure.😏
You'll have to trust me on that one lol
oOO :]]
I have to comment so we reach 69
If I reply does that ruin it?
