White society does not understand the meaning of this Sam Cooke classic. It takes people with a soul to feel the deep pain in this song, and white America in particular has not demonstrated that it has one. The impetus for this music was the condition created by white supremacy and its hatred. Sam Cooke's version, in my opinion, is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

I think we as a people have changed. When I was refused service at a “white” roadside restaurant, the black kitchen staff brought food out to me. That was when we had unity and empathy for each other. I drove back to New York listening to Al Green’s version, with renewed determination.
I listen to this song for more than 40 years and don't get tired off it. It brings back only good memories.❤

This song hits so hard, even though I was a 70's baby, born in 72, I am a white kid born in Flint, was raised with all of us, we didn't know color, we knew friends and family, we knew good food and great friends, we knew our best friends Mom(at age 7) would whip our ass no matter, and my Mom wouldn't question. I miss that, the feel of family, I am now an "older" white dude that still misses it. Those times seemed so simple in the 70's when I was a kid....... FYI, Flint was a great town for a long time. Oak street and Grand Travers.

I showed this to my father today it made him happy but also sad.
Due to liver cancer he is in his final stages and will be leaving me soon.
He loved this song and i grew up on Motown and this song just takes me back my father is a Vietnam veteran and is a very humble and religious man and I'am only 22 years old and I'am a martial artist in BJJ we may not have singing talents but one thing we both have is an unbreakable work ethic.
Thank you for this beautiful video it brought tears to my father's eye's.

My heart breaks for you... Dec 22nd will be a year since I lost my dad. Last year at this time I was hooking up his feeding tube & praying for a miracle. He was very scared to die. On his last day he was talking to an angel & asking her for directions to heaven. All I can say to you is spend as much time as you can with him...make the time. Take pictures...it may not seem like an appropriate time to do so but you will regret it if you don't. If you can take a trip with him even it it's a short camping trip or a crazy weekend in Vegas...you will be glad that you did. Please tell your father thank you for his service & the sacrifice he made to our country. I'm sorry. Another great song is Be Still by The Fray.
