- "A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke
Lyrics:
I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh, and just like the river I’ve been a-runnin’ ever since.
It’s been a long, a long time comin’,
but I know, oh-oo-oh,
a change gon’ come, oh yes, it will.
It’s been too hard living but I’m afraid to die
‘Cause I don’t know what’s up there beyond the sky
It’s been a long, a long time comin’,
But I know, oh-oo-oh,
A change gonna come, oh yes, it will.
I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep tellin’ me don’t hang around.
It’s been a long, a long time coming, but I know, oh-oo-oh,
A change gon’ come, oh yes, it will.
Then I go, oh-oo-oh, to my brother and I say, brother, help me please.
But he winds up knocking me back down on my knees, oh.
There’ve been times that I thought I couldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able to carry on
It’s been a long, a long time comin’,
But I know, oh-oo-oh, a change gonna come, oh yes, it will.

When I was 9, my. mum told me that black people are exactly the same as white people. Since I was 14 I have been arguing against racism, I protested in London against apartheid and that people must stop buying South African produce. I protested when Martin Luther king was shot and Steve Biko was killed by the Sth African police. I am now 70 and I am STILL arguing against racism. Will it end in my lifetime? As mum said, we are all the same and we all originate from the same place, Africa. My skin just happens to be white.
Wow your mum is so proud
Wow your mother was a wise woman
Kate Younge: Your mother was a very astute woman. She raised a respectable, compassionate, loving and caring young Kate. What a mother and you should be proud of her for so many reasons. I am certain that you raised your children the same as your mother raised you. You were blessed.
You should be given a medal. I am giving one for you and one for your wonderful mother, for raising a decent human being. Unfortunately, this world does not have many mothers as yours nor children who grow up to listen to their mothers/parents.
Yes, we are all human beings some nice and some are not. It depends on how your parents or your caregivers raised you.
You are an angel on earth without wings. Thank you for being a kind and wonderful human being who to this day remembers the teachings of her mother.
I don’t think racism will ever end. Our minds will always categorize everything and everyone. But who knows.
Lots of love to you and your BEAUTIFUL mother ❤️
My two best friends recently died. One of them a month ago, the other a year ago. One night the three of us were hanging out on a Saturday night having ourselves a good time, laughing and driving around when my friend in the passenger seat asked my friend sitting in the backseat to sing for us. My friend in the backseat could sing very well and was in a gospel group with his brothers. He sang "a change gonna come". Little did I know that he was going to end up singing it to his funeral months later and now he's gone now too. These men were literally like brothers to me and now each time I hear this beautiful song, I dedicate it to them. Junie and JD, this is for you. My brothers
prayers up bro.
prayers to you my bro
May the love of the Holy Spirit be with you, dear.

There has never been another Sam Cook. He could take any song & make it his own. Sam Cook will never be forgotten! ♥️♥️♥️
“It's been too hard living, but I'm afraid to die” kinda hits home

Hi there how are you doing today, nice profile you got there...
The devil you know...
I remember my father listening to this song many, many times. I was a small child, so i didn't understand that it was a message of freedom, but I do now. I am in my early 60s now. I was raised to look beyond skin color, sex, race, gender identity, sexual preferences, and not to judge people by these. My parents stood by their beliefs all their lives. I now stand by them, too. We are all equal in God's eyes.
This song still gives me chills every time I hear it. What a moving vocal performance by the legendary Sam Cooke.

I dont care how many people remake this...no one can do this song like Mr. Cooke
Yeah so many have tried but Cooke owned this song. You can feel that he meant every single word he sang and had actually lived it. There's a unique strength and soulfulness in his voice that no other singer has been able to replicate.
Why do people remake classics
If you want to sing it that’s fine
But no one wants to hear your recording of it

A great artist makes a great song, a legend makes a great impact. Sam Cooke is the definition of a legend. May God rest his soul, and may his music be listened to long after we’re gone.

I think it's pretty clear why Sam Ccooke "was murdered," unless you ignore the obvious, as well as two corroborating witnesses, both corroborated by polygraph. I think our entire culture needs to stop calling rapists "great men."

Bless all those who have marched for and died for the freedom we know today.
Freedom? Hmmm.
We're not there yet
And we need to continue fighting for those who come after us. Justice has not been served.
Barbi Button we’re not at a point that satisfy humanity today and we’re fighting but during centuries before us, people were already struggling for a better world and the freedom that we know today as the freedom that we have to aim is not the freedom that humans were fighting for a few years ago : this was harder to believe in because the freedom is searching everyday above the limits that were posed yesterday because of the fights that we all still have today and the fights that people had before us sacrificing their lives for better days. Exactly... There's only 1 race- the human race.. .
Sam Cooke wrote this song after being imprisoned for "disturbing the peace" after refusing to leave a Holiday Inn when they tried to kick his band out. He was scared of the song because it came to him suddenly and seemed really ominous. He asked his friend what it sounded like and he told him "it sounds like death" meaning he thought they'd kill him for the song. So Cooke only performed the song 1 time to a live audience. Just a month after its release and rapid use in the civil rights movement he was caught in a situation in which he was accused of rape by a prostitute who robbed him and then was shot dead by a woman across the hall he suspected was hiding the girl. The woman who claimed to have been raped by him was later charged with second degree murder of her boyfriend. This man had a really tragic life but I believe in some ways it all culminated into this one song. It was a song he feared but ultimately it was one of the songs that immortalized him past the 33 years he existed on this earth.

If I could drink a potion that would change my white skin into one of the beautiful other colors I would. Every day another colored brother or sister is unjustly abused, incarcerated, or killed and every day I weep, pray, and speak about about this. The rage I feel sometimes just eats through me. I was a teenager in the racist Bible Belt and my middle class parents just couldn't understand why I felt so much anger.
@@judithripleymcmillan1007The same for Women too. As well as the oppressed in N Korea, Ukraine etc… you do not have to be Black for this song to touch your soul.
This song makes me so sad. We're still waiting for the changes we need.
I’m 70 years old and this is one of my favorite Sam Cooke songs from the 1960s.
Has it been that long?
I'm 14

*Sam Cooke & Marvin Gaye*
*Divided Souls*
As a male "70s Child" from Detroit, I knew Marvin Gaye was held in hi-esteem as both a *Male Artist & a Black Male* who loved & was beloved by his Black Community...
However, I never knew his Life Story until after his death (1984) when I read *"Divided Soul" by David Ritz* (1985)...
When I discovered that after *Sam Cooke's* death, Motown was prepping *Marvin* to portray *Sam* in a motion pic which never saw the light of day...
This made me study the life of *Sam Cooke* ...I was surprised at how similar their lives were (Minus the drugs w/ Sam)...
• Both were Musical Genius'
• Both despised Social Injustice
• Both were equally talented vocally
• Both died tragically
• Both had "Divided Souls" btwn "Gospel" & "Secular" Music
*Sam* had just begun to address Social Injustice thru his music *"Change Gone Come"* ...
*Marvin* inherited *Sam's* throne & fully addressed *Social Injustice* issues via *"What's Going On"* Album.
Both Sad Endings!😔
Love to see there lives on the Big Screen like the *"Ray Charles"* Movie.
This song is mind blowing. Rest in peace, Sam Cooke 😢
I’m 14,and this song just delivered me.I don’t know how but it just saves my life from a lot of things,Thank you Sam Cooke for this song i hope it changes the 21st century 🥺🤧

I'm 11 and we're doing ot at school and I cries
Rest in peace to those who are not with us right now
Jonathan Lewis seriously, so many people have died before they could see change. They still fought to no avail. Our world is need of change. We've had Dr. King and Gandhi , who will be the next person to bring attention to the real problems of this world?
jimmy figueroa
Don't forget my man Malcolm X 🙏🏿
dreamerof93 oh yea I didn't mean just them. there's so many people all over the world who have brought change or fought for it. Respect to all of them.
Rmr Tyo read my second comment. I was only using those two as well known, prominent figures as examples towards my point. I hope more people would find the initiative to try to change things, even just one small thing at a time because everything starts from somewhere.
amen.,.. beautiful statement... R.I P to a ll of my fallen Angel's..
What a talent! One of the smoothest voices ever. The first time I hears Sam Cooke was a 45 my mom had. It was love at...first sound? My kids learned to love all kinds of music when they were growing up. We rode around with the windows down and the music loud.
Still waiting but we are getting there, never give up on hope. Blessed Sam Cooke, rest your work is done
My boyfriend Brien passed away only 7 months ago at the age of only 32. He use to play this song so much and would sing it with so much passion. Now this song makes me cry. Hold on to the ones you love guys bc once their gone that's it.

Adam Douglas I know it does the same thing to me and I take it one day at a time
God speed bro
I needed to hear this. God bless the makers of UA-cam to have such timeless hits available, especially in the times we are in and the ones on there way. But God is still able and is undefeated and has the final say on our destinations. Stay blessed everyone and keep Christ 1st and your cars, word, and worries in the fervent hands of the lord almighty🙏💯
I've heard many people try to duplicate this song but it's only made for Sam Cookes voice!!!! This man put his all into this. So much power in this song ❤
I listen to this song everyday. I know people on here say this is a civil rights movement song and not any of the other movements and that's true but let me tell u what I use it for. In a short amount of time I went through my uncle having been murdered, grandmother die and my soulmate, which I have two kids with cheat on me with my best friend then leave me. Thought about suicide but I know a change is gonna come and I can carry on. The Song is about pushing through and getting stronger even when you can't see the change over the horizon yet.
courage to you.
Joseph zink stay strong man
Brother have strength not only within yourself, but for the legacy and memory in which will be passed on by your children. A change will come..
Stay strong man
That is exactly right. Keep staying strong, there is always someone there for you, and if it's music like it is for me, then that's perfectly ok.
Fun fact: This song was inspired by Malcom X. He encouraged and pushed Sam to write about black peoples struggles, in a heated debate that they had in Miami. This song is very intense and intelligent. Rest In Peace Malcolm X and Sam Cook ❤
Yes n Deed, that's Exactly Right!!!!!
So that's why I thought of Malcolm X when I watched this video
Song reminds me of another friend of Sams , the Greatest.
I heard it was inspired, by the song, "blowing in the wind." I guess i heard wrong.
Had to come back, just googled the inspiration to "Change gonna come" turns out is
BOB DYLON'S 1963 protest song
"Blowing on the wind,"
but i also recognize that there could be a number of inspirations for the song.
I SAW THE CAMPBELL
BROTHERS PLAY THIS

PEDAL STEEL &

IT'S THE MOST POWERFUL PIECE OF MUSIC I'VE EVER HEARD.
I TALKED TO CHUCK CAMPBELL AFTERWARDS WHILE HE WAS WAITING FOR
HIS RIDE BACK TO THE HILTON.
HE THANKED ME AND
SAID THIS :
" IT'S A NICE PIECE"
THE SONG, THE CROWD & CHUCK WILL LIVE FOREVER WITH ME.
“Liberation is not deliverance.” Victor Hugo
.
Liberation is just the door opening, where you go and what you do, is up to you.
Liberation is not giving up the chains of one master, to put on the chains of another.
Real liberation is, thinking and doing for yourself.
We were given "Freewill". Amen, Will
"You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men."

@Daniël u cant be that dense. This song was made to represent the struggles of black people is it not obvious?
And I am an old white (sort of) lady and at 72. this is powerful and relevant to anyone that has been marginalized.
When does man made this wreck a change is going to come he ain't never lied that it has been a big change since the 50's.
My grandma who raised me since the day I was born. Her health is worsening. Today her eldest said only her children can visit her. Leaving me out in the cold. Somehow this song came to mind and here i am.
It's been a long time coming but I know change is gonna come 🥹🥹
