We are doing this curriculum for first grade math and we are really loving it. I didn't think I would need scripting, but I was wrong- the scripting is really helpful. I've looked into the saxon phonics for first grade as well (my daughter's kindergarten class used the school version of saxon phonics), and from what I've read the homeschool version teacher's guide is no longer in print and the used copies I see online are very expensive. I was wondering if you knew of a phonics program for 1st grade that is easy to teach, scripted and starts from the beginning and builds gradually as the saxon math curriculum does? So far this month we've been reviewing her kindergarten reading materials and relearning sightwords...but I need to get a phonics curriculum soon.....
When I first started with Saxon math, I definitely used the scripting. It really helped me understand how to teach math. After using the program for years though, I started to feel more confident using my own words. I'm so glad you are loving the book! Saxon Math 1 can be really fun (my kids loved all of the hands-on activies)! Concerning phonics programs, I've only used Hooked on Phonics personally. But I have heard of a few others that are scripted that you might want to check out. If you want an inexpensive program, you could check out The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading - welltrainedmind.com/p/the-ordinary-parents-guide-to-teaching-reading/?v=7516fd43adaa. It is scripted, straightforward, and starts from the beginning (and you can usually borrow it from the library). Another program that comes to mind is All About Reading - www.allaboutlearningpress.com/all-about-reading-level-1/. Again, this is scripted and starts from the beginning, but it can be expensive if you are purchasing everything new (you could look for used programs or borrow from a homeschool mom friend). Hope this is helpful! If I come across other scripted programs, I'll let you know! :)
I'm currently using Christian Light Education's 1st grade Learning How to Read program, and I think it fits the description of what you're looking for almost perfectly!
This was really useful, thank you! Struggling to choose between Saxon and Singapore. I know it depends on the student but how long, on average, would you say each lesson takes?
I'd say it takes about 30 minutes if you do every single thing in the lesson (the Meeting Book, the Lesson, the Fact Sheet, then the 2 worksheets). However, with some modifications (for instance, some parents choose to skip the Meeting Book and the second side of the worksheet), it may take only about 15 minutes. We've been using Saxon 3 and it takes about 15 minutes. I usually don't read the scripted lesson, but teach my son in my own words, which takes a lot less time for us. Hope this helps!
@@carolinescurriculumcorner466 I agree with this a lot. My son has a learning disability and language/communication delay. Reading straight out of what the book says can oftentimes confuse him, so I rephrase questions to how he can understand the question.
It took me a few years of homeschooling to learn this lesson, that I can use any program or curriculum in my own way, instead of exactly how the teacher book says to use it.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I just bought this (except for the meeting book) and can't wait to start my son on it. My son has autism and has learning disability. He did the placement and he is on Level 1 (he's supposed to be in 2nd grade this year, but common core is just not working out for him, so it's my first time homeschooling him this year). His older sister went to a private catholic school and they used Saxon Math. She struggled at the beginning, but now at 7th grade, she's in advanced math, so I know that Saxon Math works. Anyway, how many total lessons are there in Level 1, and by average, how many lessons do you give per day?
Welcome to homeschooling, Alexandra! There are 124 lessons in Saxon Math 1, so this is very doable for one school year. One lesson per day is how the book is intended to be used. If you do four lessons per week, you should be done in 31 weeks. Sometimes if the concept was difficult or tricky for my kids, we would spend two days on the lesson, doing side A of the worksheet one day, then side B the next day. You can use the program however you wish. You may be able to move faster through some lessons if your son already knows the concept. I hope you have a wonderful first year of homeschooling!
@@carolinescurriculumcorner466 Thank you so much. I started him on another curriculum 3 weeks ago and I felt that it wasn't working. I later on found out that the curriculum was common core based. After doing more research and talking to some homeschooling moms, I landed on Saxon Math. I then remembered that it's the same Math curriculum my older daughter was in at the Catholic school and I liked it a lot even when I was helping her out with homework before.
Hi I am using math 1 this year but I wanted to know more about the math strip that comes in the teachers book. Can you show the math strips to see how it looks like filled out for the week as an example?
Hi there! I don't have a physical copy of this book to look at right now (I've passed it along to another homeschool family), but if I remember correctly, the masters are found toward the beginning of the Teacher's Edition book. You can make copies of the masters pages and use them for the lessons that they are needed for. Hope this helps! :)
Saxon Math is a traditional math program. Some of the latest editions claim to be in alignment with Common Core, but all of the Saxon books I have used with my family (I have used K-7/6) teach with traditional methods.
The Math 1 Meeting Book a thin book which contains a blank calendar, weather graphs for each month, counting strips, and a few other pages. It is used daily during what the teacher's guide calls "The Meeting." Each day you will write the date on the calendar, graph the weather, and count with the counting strips by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, etc. Some feel it is a bit pricey (around $15) for the number of pages it contains, and you could certainly make your own if you would rather. I don't have a copy to show you myself, so here is a UA-cam link to a quick flip through of it: ua-cam.com/video/1d3itZXi1dE/v-deo.html Hope this helps! :)

Hey, did you purchase saxon workbooks for each child or did you photo copy pages so the books can be reused?

Can you explain the purpose and differences between “masters” and “fact sheets”? 🤔
