Thanks for this review! I wanted to do Saxon last year, but caved to my kids' attitudes and went with Teaching Textbooks. Their standardized test math scores went down! I love your daughter's quote about becoming a better mathematician. Think it's worth dealing with the attitudes for an excellent math program. Thanks again!
Interesting! We used Saxon math up until 3rd grade and switched to Teaching Textbooks. My son's test scores Also went down! We are back on Saxon and it has taken over a year to get him "caught up"~ but he loves it and is now doing well.
2:02 John Saxon never believed that Geometry should be a course separated from the rest of the books. That's why there is no Saxon Geometry book before the company was sold off in 2004. Prior to 2004, the sequence went like this; Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Mathematics, Calculus. Geometry was integrated throughout all the books, which is the way John Saxon believed it should be done.
Shaunie Britt there are many support groups. Google your area and see what is offered. This is our first year homeschooling and we are loving it. It is alot of work, but it is so very worth it.
Thanks, Jen -- it's not my strong point either, but this is why we like Saxon. It's inherently a strong math program and with the video assistance it makes it easy to teach!
Hello Mary, I use with my daughter right now Saxon 8/7. We are actually almost done with it. She is a little advanced. She is in 6th grade. I was looking at the index for it on a website for Saxon 1/2 and she knows most of what is there. My question is should it be okay for her to skip this and go right to Saxon Algebra 1? I know it says not to give her the placement test if she is currently in the book, but I could give her the one for Saxon 1/2 and see where she comes out. I think she will do really well with it. Also, how have you liked using Saxon Teacher. I wanted to see an actual lesson to see if I think it'd be good to use or not. right now I have no problems with teacher her the lessons as I understand it, but if the Saxon Teacher would work, maybe it would be good for her as well. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and to answer our questions. :)
Kristena -- I have heard that if your child passes Saxon 8/7 with 80% or above they are ok to move on to Algebra 1. I can tell you (from having my daughter go through 1/2 just to gain the math confidence) that 1/2 is largely a review of 8/7. I hope that helps with that question. We really like Saxon Teacher - it offers solutions for every single problem and test problem, also. You never see a person, but you hear her voice and see her working the solutions. Hope this helps, too! Best of luck to you and your daughter!
Mary Prather Thank you for replying so quickly. It does help. I have a feeling she will be just going straight to Algebra I. She just seems so young to be doing hat but she's really far along.
I found it very interesting that you said don't skip any problems. I normally expect math books to have lots of buffer or filler. Like the map on the wall there too! :-) I guess I always like maps more than math.
How did you like saxon 5/4. I'm been looking for a math curriculum I'm currently using abeka witch I like my son love it but like you said there are some stuff that I'm not the great person to teach it. So I need a guide... I even try the option that abeka has about purchasing the CD where the teacher teaches it, but its TOO LONG VIDEO... But I haven find anything GOOD as ABEKA and the closes thing that I have find is Saxon. Suggestions PLEASE is is my 4th year homeschooling I ha e a Kindergarter, 2nd and 4th grader..
thank you so much for this review! I was wondering what all would I have to purchase if I get the DVD? would I still need the textbook or only workbooks...etc?
hi mary. my daughter and I are homeschooling my 5 yr old grandson. His speech pathologist recommended the saxon math k program. Im looking to purchase the teacher manual. what do you recommend??
I am in first year homeschool my 2daughters grade7&3.&like to teach them saxon math but i don't know which book should i buy&where i can find a good price
im in 7th gr and am taking this and im not home schooled i just go to small school and i will go back to the lesson and it wont tell me what im supposed to do it is so frustrating
80% mastery shows prodigious gaps in a students knowledge. 100% mastery means that the student has veritable mastery of the concepts being taught with no gaps. Salman Khan calls anything less than 100% mastery “swiss cheese learning.”.
Do you know if any club exist for homeschoolers...Support groups. I am seriously thinking about taking my children out of school. I am sick of the evolution crap they teach. I want my children to be saturated with the ways of God...
If you haven't found an answer to your question concerning homeschool co-ops and support groups, you might try calling some churches to possibly get the names of some other homeschoolers in your area. I think it's wonderful to see people feeling convicted about teaching their children the Word of God. I hope you are able to find what you are looking for!
I have ADD and liked your advice, but could only listen to your information. I could only watch it for a minute or 2 because I was distracted by the rapid eye blinking. Maybe you have allergies?
It’s Miah Time get real. Public school indoctrination, um I mean education is what is bunk. Many a homeschooling mother is giving selfless hours and solid education utilizing experts when needed. Many public school teachers sit their kiddos in front of screens to ‘teach.’ How dare you insult the women who are giving America future solid leaders and culture that is not completely rotted out.

Mary, you did a great job explaining why you love Saxon math. It's not our strong point so I appreciate your input!

Thank you , I have been researching for a math curriculum. You have eased my mind.
My son is entering 1st grade and my daughter Prek.
Saxon Math books worked for me where the High School standards failed, passing me with a "C". Best math books in my opinion.

Thank you so much for sharing this - I am at a CC practicum this week and really appreciate your research and advice. Blessings!
You are so welcome. I love how we all help each other! I hope you have a great time at practicum :-)

I've heard the same thing, that Math 87 is practically the same as Algebra 1/2. We'll be moving directly to Algebra 1 also.
I found your video extremely helpful. I didn't know there were instructional cd's available. Thank you for posting!

I'm with you there -- this is in our upstairs learning area - but we have maps all over the house!
which saxon edition should i use for my second grader?
hi mary. my daughter and I are homeschooling my 5 yr old grandson. His speech pathologist recommended the saxon math k program. Im looking to purchase the teacher manual. what do you recommend??
appreciate this so much Mary! thank you.
Thanks, Eryn Hall ... do you use Saxon now, or are you thinking of it?

+Zienab Habeeb my advice would be to start at Christianbook.com or Amazon
im in 7th gr and am taking this and im not home schooled i just go to small school and i will go back to the lesson and it wont tell me what im supposed to do it is so frustrating
Can each lesson be broken up into 2 days or should each lesson be done daily???
+Jamie Gonzalez It is recommended that you complete a full lesson in one day, I believe.

no problem!
Shaunie Britt Also ask at your public library for support groups. Some of them are great, they are actually co-ops.

Imagine it being out of your realm of teaching... oh wait that’s because you’re not qualified. Homeschool is bunk

Oh Miah, the test scores say otherwise, but don't let facts get in the way of your bias.
