  • Vertically mounted graphics cards sure look cool, but the drawbacks from them should seriously be considered. A GPU thats looks better, doesn't mean it performs better.

    Just get a vertical GPU bracket like the Cooler Master or Lian Li ones. This moves the GPU further in the case removing any heat difference. Also looks a lot better than using the slots some cases come with.

    The only reason you’re getting higher temps is because you are choking airflow if you have it mounted using a aftermarket mount it’s further back and more stable than the one in the frame of the case

    The issue is you contradicted yourself in the video, stating the bracket might get stressed and stuff, then a minute later you state that gpu sag isn't an issue because it's being propped up with the extension cable, It's as if you ran out of points or you just didn't want the gpu to be V mounted at all. Temps really depends on how you keep your gpu regardless, some cases have space for it and some dont.

    • @hardwiredreview

      The bracket supports the GPU so it won't sag, but it may stress the bracket if the GPU gets jossled around

    • @otreblarazalas669
      @otreblarazalas669 Рік тому +10

      @@hardwiredreview that doesn't make any sense. Most of the brackets I've seen ranging from lian li, phanteks to EZDIY-FAB are very sturdy. Even in Cases like the 011 where the bracket isn't supported by a base and is in "free fall" won't get stressed.

    • @wupme
      @wupme Рік тому

      @@otreblarazalas669 then think a bit harder and it will make sense. The GPU is only held up by the bracket.
      The GPU lacks the additional support from the PCIE slot. So all the weight is on the bracket, which puts more stress onto the GPUs board where the bracket is connected to it.
      It also gets wobbly if you move the case around, and puts even more stress on it.
      On the other hand it is vertical and therefore will not sag. As it has no way of flexing into that direction.

  • @savagej4y241
    @savagej4y241 Рік тому +4

    Except for some niche cases that others here have commented on, the most practical use case of vertically (bracket) mounting the GPU is if you're going to install a waterblock for custom loop liquid cooling, and not use the stock heatsink and fans. This completely negates the downsides described in the video, frees up space for other PCIe cards, removes almost all weight placed on the PCIe slot, and replaces the mechanism of exhausting hot air from the GPU with drawing in cool air onto a radiator. The only real downsides to this is it costs more, and requires more time/effort and care. Ambient temperature in the case is slightly increased, but temperature of the GPU core and VRM's is significantly reduced. Hot spot temperatures can be reduced by 15°C or more this way, without having to undervolt.

    What I found out with my 3070ti is that, the exhaust comes out through the topside of the gpu (not the back side). So it is actually boiling the glass panel and causing thermal issues while horizontally mounting it.

I got my omen 45L around 6 months ago and I recently put it under my desk (I KNOW ITS BAD FOR TEMPS) but I have a 3070 and I was wondering if there is any way to get better airflow under my desk. I can really feel the heat when I am sitting down and I doesn’t bother me but I’m sure it’s not good for the cpu. I stay around 55-65 on small load and 65-80 on high load. I also wanted to ask you if you know if the omen 45L can have a vertical mount attached because I LOVE THE WAY THEY LOOK. Could you let me know your thoughts. One last thing is how do I know what kind of psu cables I need to get because I don’t like the stock cables and I really wanted to get a new cable for Gpu and motherboard!!! Thanks 😊

    Why would you make this video with so much false info? Get a verticle GPU mount and the weight and stress are taken away. Also with said mount you can adjust the GPU between the glass and the board so it is not on top of either. My temps and temps on other I have built for people have incresed by 1 to 2 degrees which is nothing. I don't even hit 60 degrees while gaming in 4k. As a matter of fact, vertically mounting the GPU takes strain off the motherboard connector from having the GPU weight sag resting on there constantly. Maybe do a little more research and make a new video so you don't discourage others from doing this by giving them false information.

    As with all things, it varies-- first, you need reasonable clearance between the fans on the GPU and the case-- especially if your case has a glass/acrylic panel. Looks great, but not so good with airflow. Secondly, there's a wide range of PCIe riser/bracket assemblies. My Thermaltake P3 case (which has had a vertical GPU for 6 years now), the PCIe slot is supported at both ends on a case-specific bracket that's bolted to the chassis at both ends-- it's probably more stable than if it were sitting in the motherboard's PCIe slot.

Yes, temps will depend on how close the gpu is to the glass panel, that's why there are vertical gpus brackets like Phanteks, Cooler Master, NZXT, etc, that move the GPU further so temps won't increase and looks better imo. The included vertical slots are recommended to use with liquid cooling gpu so it won't suffocate with less contact with air.

    Increase airflow due to the fans mounted at the bottom pushing air around and up towards the card. No hot air pockets air as these fans push the air upwards and heat rises with the help off the bottom case fans.
    If your watercooled and your AIO leaks, which they do usually at the pump or the edge of the rad. Then the water is likely to miss your GPU. Eitherway if your rocking a 4090 it decreases the rare chance if it leaks it will miss your 2k GPU. Motherboards are way cheaper.
    It helps GPU sag.
    You might always want to mention many GOOD brackets allow you to much your GPU up, down and side to side. I can chance where it sits in any direction. So there is no downside to a decent bracket.

    I've noticed lower temps all around when vertically mounting the gpu , when mounted horizontal the heat from the gpu is forced into the motherboard and if you have a nvme drive in there it will heat up that as well so not only does it cool better for the mainboard as well as the card, that is if it is mounted correctly proper case fan placement and not up against the glass , and no one should mount a gpu without a third point of contact holding the gpu up, you just asking for trouble dangling it off the IO shield not to mention the sag.
    So YES mount your gpu vertically just do it right.

      iam using an o11 dynamic with 3 bottom intake fans. vertical mounting increased my gpu temps by 5-7 degree. iam sure the reason for it are the 3 case fans below. the gpu fans push air through the fins and thus hot air out on the sides of the card. the side, is now facing downwards, so the gpu fan flow and the case fan flow fight each other. the case fans, blow that hot air from the gpu upwards, to the fans of the gpu again. this ways, the hot air gets recycled instead of blown away. not sure if should try turning the fans in the bottom around to exhaust rather then intake

Ask any gpu repair technician how often cracks in the small appendix next to the pci connections happen and how severe they are to fix. Vertically mounting the gpu let's the card sit on top of the connector and so it does not so much rely on mounting brackets to be in a good position.

    1. YOU MISSED THE MAIN PROBLEM.
    2. YOUR FAN SETUP IS WRONG
    SOLUTION:
    1. ON AN AIR COOLED VWRTICAL MOUNT CARDS THE BOTTOM FANS NEED TO BE PUSHING OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF YOUR CASE.
    IF NOT THE CASE FAN AND GPU FAN AIR FLOW CANCELS OUT COOLING.
    2. YOU NEED A FAN BLOWING DIRECTLY AT THE SPACE BETWEEN THE GPU AND MOTHERBOARD.
    THIS SPACE CAUSES THE GPU AND MB TO BECOME HEAT SOAKED, THIS ALSO MEANS YOUR REAR CASE FAN NEEDS TO BE PUSHING OUT. AMD THE SIDE FANS NEED TO BE PUSHING IN. TOP FANS ALSO PUSH OUT.
    3. HEAT RISES HAS ZERO EFFECT INSIDE A CASE.

    1:25 The AIO CPU coolers liquid I/O tubes, lies lower than the pump?
    Dude, no system is perfectly closed, after some time, liquid will evaporate and then the bubbles will go (naturally) upwards...
    This means you CPU cooling will degrade faster and the pump will run dry, what reduces it´s lifespan massively.
    ALWAYS put the pump (the thing on the CPU) lower than the coolers I/O tubes, so air get´s trapped in the cooler and not the pump!!!
    Cheers

  • @robertdrzewiecki6921
    @robertdrzewiecki6921 7 місяців тому

    ??? Absolutely no !!! Maybe in your case? it depends on the case, airflow and other factors. You can't generalize like that. It also depends on the choice of GPU. If we insert a thick card with the cooling unit placed 1-2 cm from the housing glass, the difference will be about 10 degrees. If you want to have the card in a vertical position, mount it in another PC case.

      Its not liquid cooler. It's liquid metal. GPUs don't use liquid metal instead of thermal paste AFAIK. So that is not an issue
