Just did a wrecking trip off the east coast of Essex using my brand new GX2 12-20 class.
Suddenly lost all my gear when the 30lb whiplash braid parted at the tip. On examination you could see that the guide ring insert had crumbled away leaving just the sharp edge of the metal guide. Fortunately I’d taken the 20-30lb GX2 with me so was able to do a quick changeover only to find the same thing happening to the top line guide of the second rod. It doesn’t say anywhere that these rods aren’t suitable for braid, in fact an outlet in Bristol mentions on their sales pitch that they’re suitable for braid or mono.
Fortunately I was able to get a refund when I returned them to the shop I’d bought them at.
The conclusion is that these rods are not compatible with braid use.

THANKS THANKS THANKS! I was lost in a world of rods and reels and fishing jargon so I thought, 'who would I ask for straightforward expert advice that I can trust and isn't trying to sell me something?' and it's you. So I found this vid and made my choice. sorted!

Got the gx2 spinning 7ft, What a superb rod for price, And it can take more punishment than most expensive spinning options out there

I’m glad this type of Ugly Stik GX2 has the aluminum and/or titanium oxide guide inserts. The all stainless steel guides on the GX2 get minor grooves in them at the tip from braid line.

Which Gx2 has the better guides? Boat rod or spinning?

good review mate many don't cover the detail of why to buy or not and the nitty gritty. you just did just that, that's what's needed in every review thanks, not a big fan of Shakespear kit but a big fan of the ugly stik.

Thanks for all the time and effort you put into making these videos John, the whole family enjoys watching them.
I've not fished for around 30yrs and I want to get back into it, especially fishing from the Kayak.
I bought the ugly stik gx2 12-20lb 5ft kayak rod and a penn spinfisher v 4500 reel. What test main line would you recommend using, and which strength (lb) for making mackerel traces? To get going with. Any sound advice is greatly appreciated. 😁👍

Great vid again john I get you and I also use ugly stick for everything up to filling for pollock buy for real big stuff
    Penn Rampage
Can fault them never let me down from sharks to big eels
Cost is higher but you do get what you pay for sometimes
But this is only my personal opinion

fatfish 68 - I have to disagree about the Penn Rampage. I have first hand seen 4 snap under no real pressure at all. 2 on the same trip on their first outings.

Hi all, I'm looking to get an ugly stick for the boat. I got light stuff for inshore, then I got heavier stuff for channel wrecks... now I want to get something in the middle - would the GX2 spinning meet my expectations?

Hey guys, I am travelling to TCI (Turks and Caicos) soon. I want to try ocean fishing (I have been fishing since I was a kid but mainly lakes, ponds and rivers - small fish). I bought a travel spin rod (15-40 g from Savage Gear - it's a freshwater rod), do you think it would work with 20g (3-5" lure) soft plastics in flats? Also, I was planning to buy a Daiwa Seahunter Z Travel Boat Rod 30-50lb or DAM Salt-X Travel Boat Rod 300-600g cw . I might only go for one or two boat trips whilst I am there, so most of fishing I will be doing will be probably from the beach or rocks. My questions: 1. What line and lure weight can I use with both rods (The Daiwa doesn't mention CW, only LB rating). 2. Can I use it from beach/rocks or only boat? 3. What fish can I target with these boat rods and on what line :) It's hard to find specific answers out there. Many thanks,

Buy rubber bungs for walking sticks in the right diameter and they’ll be just like what you’ve got on the 30-50lb class rod.😉

    Hi john,
i'm looking to start lure fishing in January and i am looking at a rod for this type of fishing. I don't have a great deal of money to spare as working for the nhs we don't get a lot. so would you say that the ugly stik GX2 would be ideal for spinning? 7ft 4-18g or should i look at another type? or do you think i should look at the penn Squadron 2 spinning rod? cheers mate

I moved here to south Texas 4 years ago from London. Majority of my fishing in England was freshwayer specimen hunting. But now all I do is salt water as we have amazing fishing. I moved my mum n dad over. He also is a fishing addict. He has 2 Ugly Stiks. 1 light one for lures - soft p;astics, poppers, jerk baits etc for trout/redfish/flounder/Spanish mackerel and a heavier one that Ive seen him pull out big Amber jacks, big snapper and a 7' hammerhead with it. He likes the rod a lot and at a good price. So he bought a pretty good reel to go with it. I suppose everything depends on what your target fish is.
