(S1 Ep135) The Ugly-Stik GX2 Rod vs. Slot Reds
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 січ 2025
- After my first outing with the Ugly-stik. It was apparent that the reel Shakespeare paired the combo with was a dud. So I decided to pair the rod with a mid quality reel and it was game on! Who was gonna win...the Mud Donkey's or the GX2?

Wow! My opinion on the first video must have struck a chord with Ugly-Stick lovers. Oh well, I try my best to call it like I see it. And that reel is still subpar.
^LOL She wants the GX2
I wish it was a 1 piece too. That's what I prefer. This is my first 2 piece.
MDLR Fishing I fish with the combo myself and I haven’t never had any problems with the ten dollar reel and I’ve caught some big large and small mouth bass with it like you said everyone is entitled to their opinion
Sorry late to the party but rod or reel don't matter unless your big ocean fishing. I have seen people catch river monsters with just string an a stick.
I love how you have the price scanner on still. For you can return it after the videos are done.
Good video. Your evaluation is exactly right. Good rod, crap reel. I have an ugly stick and, while its not the best rod ever, it has never let me down.
*Very good value. Action is exactly what I hoped for. This is probably my best fishing gear purchase of the year. When I buy a long (9-10ft) surf rod, it will definitely be Ugly Stik.*
My first rod and reel for inshore was a Ugly Stik GX2 combo that was a gift 5 years ago. Never had an issue catching slot reds, trout and flounder on it in the intracoastal and marsh creeks of Jacksonville, FL. I have since upgraded but my daughters still use it when they fish with me. its even been dunked once or twice.
Man I'm a definate drag addict...by that I mean I'm addicted to the sound of that drag squealing when we hook up on big fish. Tight lines bro!
I also love the sound! It equates to happiness!
That GX2 was no joke. It casted well too. I agree, it’s a low budget rod for the price conscious peeps.
Crying shame that you didn't try that reel. It's a nice combo for cheap.
I use 2 of them, quite impressive for up to 15# fish or possibly more. That's as big of a catfish I've caught so far on them. I've seen videos of people catching 6' gars, and 6-8' sharks on the GX2.
👍👍👍 I like them.
@5:45. That blowup right after you released the fish was crazy!
My 7 foot gx2 with a Abu Garcia revo bait caster is a dam good combo. Landed pb of 29 inch trout last night on 20lb fluorocarbon seaguar line and a rapala rip stop
I should have watched this one before I told you something you already knew. Lol. Nice to see one in action!
I bought the combo at Walmart and it’s so good for me I caught a 42 inch black drum just this Saturday and the past couple weeks I’ve been catching sheep head and a 24 inch red I have no trouble with it 20 pound braid on it and a Carolina rig
Agree.. got one with and one with out and the reel is weak.. added a abu Garcia reel revo and I love it.. fresh water sail water both works for me. And shore fishing none boat.. for 6month now it been fun with this need more action but still nice for the price point..
Great video! I'm 46 years old and just got into fishing. Never thought I say this, but kayak fishing looks fun. Just got an Ugly stick, and I love it. Just hit subscribe and like.
I have the same exact rod but I bought the Shakespeare rod and reel combo. Seems to work flawless one year later. I bought it last year.
I bought the Ugly Stick GX2 4 piece combo. All the youtubes said it was a great rod and reel.
My Ugly Stick might be defective because no matter how hard I Stick the rods together, sometimes it still flies to pieces when I cast it.. My rod comes apart and flies into the water.
Other than that, I like my rod but I am looking for a new one. I ordered the Megatron reel made by Kast King. I'm totally new to fishing other than the dozen or so times I went fishing in my younger years.
I’ve used all manner of rods lure fishing here in the UK, some expensive and others like the Ugly Stik not so. However the Ugly Stik has outlasted the rest and due to its price takes the most abuse, even out sea fishing on the boat. It’s the “give it to the kids rod” when they’re with me, as if it does get broken it’s not the end of the world. For the price they can’t be beaten and even though I’m a discerning angler, I’m quite happy using one.
Came here cause I love ugly stiks and I just got a new one today, the 7’6” med/light Striper, I put a brand new kastking megatron 3000 on it...now I’m wondering: do folks eat those redfish? Looks like good fishing there!
I also have a gx2 8’ UL with a the green lews Mach spinning reel, I have all the tiger series with piscifun, kastking, and Tica reels on them, I have some Elite salmon casting rods, and I still have all my old black/red/yellow ones I bought in the 90s that I still use...I probably have 20+ ugly stiks that i use for various types of fishing I do from ponds to rivers to the delta to the bay to the ocean...I became a fan of them as a teenager in the early 90s because they were cheap and they don’t break, even closing a car door on em or rolling up in the window or stepping on them...
I have this same rod and paired it with a Penn Pursuit 4000. It’s a very good budget friendly set up that’s been catching lots of nice fish over the last few years.
Nice job I have a penn fierce 2 4000 on my gx2 6'6" med and it does the job
Mark, glad you keep the rod .🛶6' med is perfect.
Great review of a great rod for the price! Well done Mark!
Really cool video man. I have a 7’ inshore Ugly Stick paired with a Lew’s tournament bait caster that’s is super sensitive and it’s never let me down. I’ve caught everything from 32” reds to 23” specks.
just realized whats missing on your yak...rear view mirrors. On the 3rd viewing of this video (or a few others too) I watch the water around and particularly behind you... lots of things going on.... I really enjoyed this trip. its interesting how I imagine a number of us recognize the backgrounds and know where you are... especially those platform towers. again great video!
Yeah they’re dead giveaways if you know the area.
👍👍👍
(Hi, will a butt joint two piece rod have more sensitivity than a mid joint two piece rod?) Thanks.....
Last week I ran down to Walley World to pick up a GX2 Rod for my wife @ 39.99. I then saw for 10 dollars more I could grab the combo and then have a spare reel in case the need ever came. I walked up to check out and they rang me up for 24.99. I'm pretty pretty stoked to say the least. Not a bad rod at all.
You got one heck of a deal, awesome!
Great video man. I have the same 6 ft medium and paired it was a pflueger president xt reel. Love the feel of the pflueger and it has a very tough/smooth drag. The cork handle on the reel feels nice too. Big difference when youve been using 20$ walmart poles your whole life like i have untill recently.
Not one wind knot. Guy with his finger on the red bleep button just relaxed a bit! Nice do over mark.
Ugly Stik rods are rods with a decent blank and cheap guides. They aren't going to be the lightest rod or come with Fuji Silcon Carbide Guides but it will get the job done. No one really needs a $500 G.Loomis NRX and $420 Shimano Metanium to go out and catch fish.
There's a video of a guy casting a gallon of water with that thing. He lifted a chainsaw and a bicycle off the ground with it pretty dang tough.
Ugly stick is the best rod to take on camping trips because its darn near indestructible
May i use sinker weights on Ugly Stik gx2 medium 6 on saltwater like big ocean in middle east?
I just wanna know is that rod specially for cast or jigging or spinning??
What technique we can used on this Ugly Stik GX2 ?
I use it for casting. But I am sure you can use it for all techniques.
I have a gx2 paired up with a diawa 4000bg and love it
Yup, I personally prefer the ugly stick rod. The reel that comes with it SUCKS! Good call Mark, brought the ugly stick rod back to life... tight lines never stop brother!
I enjoy watching your channel the most!!! Thank you for your service and congrats on the retirement. On another note can you tell me where you were here? Thank again Mark!!
I will keep my castaway rods, but have heard a lot of good about the ugly stick
Have the ultralight 7ft gx2, paired it with a Penn Battle II 2500 spooled with 30 lb power pro. Love it. Use it for everything from bass to inshore. It's my go to setup. Looking to get a beefier gx2 and maybe a 6000 battle II for sure fishin.
I have always used Ugly-Stik rods I just like them. I currently have 3. 2 Elite for spinning and an elite for a casting rod. Again I like them.
Can't never go wrong with an ugly stick
I have the gx2 Elite. It's suppose to be more premium with its cork grip handles and it's a graphite blank..for more sensitivity..
Awesome video brother! Looks like y’all had a pretty good day on the water
Am that dude who reads the online comments! lol........ Subscribed.
I use that rod with a kastking summer 5000 size reel for catfish. For the money can’t beat it. Is there better rods and reels yes but if your looking for a rig under $100 it does the job. Had it for over a year hasn’t let me down yet.
Eh, I bought the combo for $17 at Walmart. So far, I can't complain about the reel either. Been targeting bass, channel cats, and common carp. So far it's been able to pull in good fighters up to 15 lbs without a problem. I use far better reels on other rods, but I'll keep running that cheap reel until I destroy it. One of my other go to reels is a 30 year old Shakespeare Alpha XT on an equally old 7' Rhino. Despite it being heavy and cheap, even in its day, I can't seem to kill it. It has caught a lot of fish. Though I wouldn't want to be targeting Trout or Walleye with either, they both seem to handle river monsters well enough. Now sensitivity? That's another topic entirely. They both are good enough for sunfish, but there are better options for the more picky eaters. If you're a casual fisherman, the GX2 combo will be the only thing you'll ever need. For under $20, I can't find anything to complain about.
got the combo for 40$ , gonna use the reel for now
I got the 7 foot one piece paired with a daiwa bg mq 3000k sweet setup got me a 41 inch snook the couple weeks a go hat 4od handle it perfectly
Nice 👍
I have some of the old school ugly stick and my only complain was that they were really heavy for a rod other than that they were bomb Prof
hey dont know if u remember, but on another vid i asked if your pvc would work on the compass. i did it and its amazing! THANKS!
I have a GX2 paired with penn battle 2 3k series. I've catch a lot of pangasius catfish. the biggest is 25lbs.
nice red on a 6'6 or 6' medium? nice
Try the pro light just as strong but more sensitive. I have pulled in huge fish on gx2 and pro light
I'm planning to buy this rod GX2 and I prefer 4 PC's rod. Please share your recommendation on this . Most of the time I'm traveling that why I prefer 4pcs rod. Please suggest. Also is it possible to use in salt water fishing.
I love the GX2 pole..I have the 7ft 2pc with a Shimano Sustain 4000fe and it hasn't let me down yet..
How much did you spend on the shimano if you don’t mind me asking
Does anyone recommend a good low price reel for this rod I was looking at the abu Garcia black max spinning reel what do u guys think
What ugly stik is best for micro jigging?
Great video. Thank you for the follow up video.
Key West Kayak fishing uses that $10 reel to land everything from big jacks, to 80lb sharks. YMMV.
I have had and used every generation of Ugly Stik that I have bought from the original to the GX2
With the gx2 combo I caught a big 20 pound salmon it waa a hazal not that bad ,,👍
What size line are you using?
Have same rod I paired it with kastking 4000 baitfeeder
So.it was the reel . Good action on the rod nice bend...
academy brand h20 rods are the best bang for the buck. especially their classic edition for 14.99! great for beginner fisherman! cant beat their lifetime warranty either!
Which reel is this? Thanks.....
I've seen everything from slot reds to hundred pound alligator gar on a 7' MH GX2. Awesome rod. Put a 4500 Penn Spinfisher V on it and you will have an indestructible combo that will fight for a lifetime!
Where is this? Will you post the launch in your patreon group
Yes coming soon.
I own 5 of them and when lived in South Florida I've hook some big snook and tarpon on the ugly stick and never had a problem
It’s a decent rod for its price.
MDLR Fishing I agree with the reels they put on them are garbage
Ugly Stik gx2 6’6” MH + Quantum Optix 60 , 30lb braid 50lb mono leader = perfection
Man I love the content love that its in the same waters i fish in the Galveston area i try to fish every weekend and whenever i can
Try an elite.... 90% of my fishing is with those, and shimanos... power pro braid, P-line CXX leaders.. time tested.
i like the gx2 i pulled up a high end 30 big ugly with it like a champ, i got it combo with a sedona and a nasci 4000
I didn't use braid on the combo I had the saltwater is what killed mine so prolly not a braid good reel
at 2:35 another one popped to the left on the bank.
What lures are you use for them reds...nice reds by the way 👍👍
Hogies Swimming Jack
I use a 7’6” redfish extreme rod and a quantum accurist reel
just got this rod . great vid man
Thanks 🙏
It's like a sore Peter, you just can't beat it. FTW.
lol
I bought the combo, perhaps not being that intelligent. However oddly enough, at my local Wally-World the bare rod and the combo were the same price. I don't get out fishing enough to have given the outfit a good shakedown.
Well commented on the Ugly stix. All said is truth! ;)
Great catch man
If you wanna see the ugly stik gx2 in action watch key west kayak fishing that man is a beast with that rod
Nice vid. Now you will have it forever cause 7 yr warranty can't beat it.
Gx 2 can pull a boat switch to bigger reel with that pole and seen a guy take a chainsaw to it didn't break it very tough pole
where is this at?
David rojas Galveston Tx area
LOL the gx2 is not bad at all I never had a problem with the original rod as far as wind knots or line twist but if it gets any saltwater in it will seize up quick if you don't get it cleaned for being a $10 real basically I definitely got my money's well worth out of it before it crapped out now I've got my Penn Pursuit 2 size 4000 real on it since I let my truck door slam close when I was parked on an incline and snap my penn rod I'm almost to rollover pass with my yak right now going to fish rollover Bay you should make a video sometime soon maybe the marshes on the other side of the icw or rollover bay I've never caught anything in the past myself I caught a couple of Reds and Flounder off of yacht Basin Road right next to the Pass. Lol you should take checkout tkf Forum Texas kayak fisherman don't know if you're a member already but there's a post kind of about you in the saltwater section titled" has a UA-camr ever given out one of your spots" you may find it interesting to read
I've already fished Rollover Bay and the nearby marsh. Not much fish caught that day. A friend told me about the TKF thread and it was humorous.
lol ya the ppl who are upset are just mad you catch fish in spots they thought only they knew about but never catch anything haha
Yes I got one brook first day fishing. We'll handle broke up Don't know is good I got Walmart 39 Dollars.
Diawa bg And 9” gx2 for me
Tree Climber same
I use shimano spinning reels
For the price ugly sticks are will build....
It's a good rod for it's price, for sure.
It also comes in a one piece i have one works great
Well everybody recommended for offshore fishing
Nice rods
sea monster @ 3:22
Try an uglystik elite and Abu Garcia black max
Just naught an ugly stik and on it I use the 1000 series Abu Garcia Silvermax
Nice review:-)
Great job bro !
Sir please tell me ugly gx2 good a bad made in China I request please solution I confused this road by or not boy please tell me
its a matter of getting what you pay for I have some of my ugly sticks for 20 yrs in and out of my boats fresh salt . I have payed more for better rods but I don't own any of them they all broke in a year.I fished in FL NJ PA NC yes get a good reel . I should of broke my rods many times over using 50 pound test. I love to fish 1 piece light rods for big fish loads of fun. So am i an ugly fan yes till some one else builds a rod that will hold up to all the places i fish and how hard it is getting them there. yes ime the guy that will jump a boat out of the water 3 feet spinning the prop out of the water to get to the fishing hole. you get to see a lot of gear come loose. and that's when rods break . I bought my first ugly when i got my first boat and several other 200 300 dollar rods several yrs later still own the ugly many boats and other rods later lol If i find a boat as tough as an ugly i would be set but the boats and other rods all broke. Fish what you like but remember when your rod breaks that's when karma will hit you and that laughing sound in your head will be me. YES even broke high priced rods in my yack sneaking under a bridge. not my ugly
Ps its not how much you spend for your gear its the job they get done. i make more money in 1 day then most do in a week. so I can buy the best names but I don't like getting ripped off when a 50 dollar rod is better. yes I spend 280 to 65 on reels because those brands have been with me since I was 10 in Fl and still work.got tons of reels and have never failed me. So show me a rod a strong as an ugly and I will buy it and test it. if it is as good I will buy more but so far no one has done this. I have broken them all and wasted tons of cash We all know a broken rod gets you no fish and most guys I fish with have only 1 or 2 loose I or 2 and it hurts while fishing and wrecks your day. There are days 1 take only one for where time fishing. So it must be strong.
If you spend a weeks pay or more on that rod you want to kill the company that made it when it breaks
@@noneyawa no
Like if you want him to take the gx2 BTB
