I’ll believe progress when I see progress. It is nice to hear them actually acknowledge the issues Odyssey has. Recognizing there is a problem is the first step in correcting it.

I wouldn't even expect anything to come out of them acknowledging an issue either though.
Like, we've seen plenty of promises and were only met with lies and deception, and they kept people on a short leash until they simply dropped those "ain't gonna happen anymore" and then moved on like nothing happened.
Already I got a feeling that the next content update will contain nothing interesting, at least nothing that will breathe new life into this game. We'll probably just get green-humans fighting us and pass it off as new gameplay, and that'll be it.
Honestly, at this point, I'm just even looking forward more to other similar games. Hell, even Star Citizen looks like it has a far more promising future. When I look at that game I just keep thinking "what Elite could've been.."

We live in our ships. That's why we want ship interiors, even if there isn't a lot of gameplay: the ship is our home. Maybe it would be mostly a thing for longer term exploration. How do I handle environmental control and life support, black tank, grey tank, water and air purification, O2 resupply. and so on. In the Bubble a lot of this would be handled each time we dock and refuel. But in the black?

Fully agree, after all these years from Alpha the fact we still can’t walk around our ships (unless you use VR and a long cable lol) is a huge reason why the original older players are moving on.
ED stop with the new silly stuff, redo whatever you need to give us interiors and the ability to walk around our ship and like many, I’ll be back to play!

They should've just said no. legs are a completely different game.
They should've focused on what the game does very well: Using your space ship to do things. Give us more things to do with a much greater mission variety, more things to discover with varying degrees of rarity, new space station designs, put work into making existing systems better. Space legs was a mistake.

@@BB-nn9en You’re forgetting that they said yes back in the alpha and beta that’s why all of us old time elite players backed to them.
The first time I stood up in a sidewinder with VR on and was able to walk around most of the cockpit I was absolutely blown away that they had already done it, and it just seemed like just textures to finish it.
Here we are years later, they went back on the promise of a single player game, space legs, and a million other things.

Honestly, one of my biggest gripe is that the planets are bald. I remember landing on a planet with huge canyons when I first started playing, and now they're almost completely flat on every planet I land on. It killed exploration for me. If they wanted the biologicals to be interesting, they really should have made those procedurally generated so that there would be more variation across the galaxy.
The second biggest gripe is how dated foot combat feels. They said it would be like battlefield, but that's a MASSIVE stretch. It's still super clunky.
The third is the same gripe we've always had. It's still a grindy game, and FDEV have done nothing to resolve that since the game was first released.

    • @Thiniking

    • @NoxusGr01
      @NoxusGr01 2 роки тому +4

Honestly buddy I think the exact opposite. While I agree on foot combat can be better, planets in Odissey looks much much more realistic, with distinct geological features, better illumination and no more cartoonish style colors and shades. Illumination in space is really flat because you do not have diffraction, only hard shadows and flat gradients, also the topology of many planets was waaaay off, now the displacement map is much better (while maybe "less fun" let's say). I say I like them much more than horizon! For the grinding aspects I think ultimately it's a player choice. While I play I like to be free and set my own goal, like a light roleplay and I avoid grind for credits or ranks. I still agree there are some grindy aspects for some achievements, but as I said I think it's more dependent on a player's personal goals and playstyle! Not trying to bring down your opinion, just reporting my personal experience! Fly safe commander! o7

my issues with odyssy were that it seemed to be developed by people who didn't know what elite is.
why can buy 1 ton of handheld weapons in cargo for 7000, but all the weapons are crazy priced.
why does a base pistol cost 5 times as much as a ship
why does a suit cost 20 times what a ship does
why does a handheld kinetic rifle do more DPS then a ship based multi-cannon that masses more the gau-8 tank killer on the a10 aircraft.

      @bjornzimmermann6554 2 роки тому +17

you're absolutly right and that shows one of the problems with elite: They never had a real plan of how to expand the game so they slabt things on it. Like elixwhitetail said, there was no credit sinkhole so the whole economy went down the drain. Same with missions vs normal trading. You can make millions with a single mission run where you haul cargo from a to b. Try this without a mission just with normal trading. Not a chance, even with the same cargo.
combine this with developers who have no real vision or idea on how to expand the game and give it more real content and there we are, odissey. A bad fps, no real other stuff then shooting in a settlement.
Things they introduced and completly ignored:
Codex - still no rumors or so. This thing is dead as it can be
Powerplay - lets just not talk about it
Scanner - good idea, nothing to come, wasted effort
first person exploration - went from reaction mini game to basicly nothing
random voiced missions - never see one of them and no more real development here
Sadly i would say: Start new from scratch and develope elite dangerous 2. Maybe this could get better but the current game seems to be stuck for too long.

Not gonna defend most of those questions, but for weapons in cargo - it is the same logic as in real life, where self-cost of an item is low, but final price on retail is high to cover up all the money trader spent. Weapon cargo (if think by logic) is a sealed crate and if you open it up yourself, you make all of it's content illegal unless you are the retailer.
Clothing and weapons prices are more of a balance needs, due to how weird it would be to buy hold full of best suits, weapons with mods after 1 mining session.

Yet another grind is coming to the game, where we’ll need to travel 1000+ lys somewhere on some random planet, only to do yet another gardian puzzle, in order to unlock a new maguffin. That we’ll then will need to "Energise" or "Power Up" the new maguffin. Then bring said maguffin to relevant NPC. Rinse and repeat the process 8-10 times until all the new maguffins have been unlocked. Build and engineer a new ship with all the Thargoid maguffins, and start fighting the new "Super Powerful" Thargoids in the same exact fashion as before. The only difference, is that we will have red anti-thargoid weapons instead of the blue gardian ones.

For a game that has such a heavy emphasis on procedural generation, I'd really like to see the mission system overhauled; or at least developed with more open-ended gameplay as a possibility. Imagine if that simple mining contract turned into a pirate shakedown where, should you capitulate to handing over your hard earned ore, the mission provider updates the contract into retributive strike against the pirate faction, or even provides data on where you can go to recover the stolen cargo (possibly leading to an onfoot assault/infiltration of a pirate base/ship/station). Their communication around 4.0 all but confirms what I was suspecting all along. They no longer have the development talent in-house that’s capable of working on the old code, so they’re unable to add or modify any existing systems like ships or stations beyond extremely superficial things like skins. They needed to move everything to a new code base in order to make any deeper changes to the non-Odyssey part of the code, but it took them way too long to realize this and lost 80% of their player base in the process it looks like. The worst part is it’s probably due to management and not the devs themselves, which means all of this was avoidable.

Frontier does not comment on bans, they sweep it under the rug like it never happened.
They banned KaiZen, host of Black Sky Legion (formerly Elite Week) for "drug references" because he described the author of the pulp scifi story that the concept of The Dark Wheel was pulled from as "a pothead author" but there are dozens if not hundreds of people talking about smoking pot or whatever who don't get touched, and never mind that their own game has drugs, Onionhead is basically future weed. What they actually wanted him gone for was because he was in their pre-Odyssey content creators secret club and he told them what they didn't want to hear, that Odyssey was going to go over very badly and their plans were going to backfire (and oh look they sure as hell did, Frontier's lost half their market cap since Odyssey launched).

What does more Elite: Dangerous look like? Continued VR support with supplemental gameplay. Fixing of size/scale issues with ships. Rebalancing of core gameplay loops like mining, smuggling, and bounty hunting. Faster paced storytelling. More ships with new/innovative ways of attainment, like with materials for the XG7 series, with power play ranks, or even minor faction ranks. (maybe even ships that deviate from the pilots federation standardization of HUD and module compatibility, hence why they aren't for sale open market) Revitalized exploration for standard ships, as right now lacking a fleet carrier makes exploration seem futile and unrewarding (like riding a bicycle across the country instead of taking a plane). Seemless transition from a planets surface to orbital station. (Yes, I'm referring to ship interiors, which would require them to fix the "scale issues.” but doesn't it seem weird to you that you can walk every square inch of the galaxy on your own two feet except for the 10 steps from your chair to the ramp?)

Meaning the software was able to do that out of the box. Fdev has to DISABLE THIS and called a 'BUG'. The reason why is because the CMDR saves are stored on the Frontier database server and only the ARX point balances are stored on the respective console companies. I started playing in the last year and I love the space side game but I had absolutely no idea it existed until someone told me who played it. As far a accomplishments go, that's a pretty low bar to set. I see tons of other games out there that have WAY smaller dev teams and WAY lower budgets that still manage to do WAY more with their games on a WAY faster timeline. Kinda makes me wonder what people at places like FDEV and CIG do all day for years at a time with seemingly so little accomplished compared to what other studios seem to be able to do faster and better with much fewer resources. You can say a lot of things about SC's development speed but you can't say they aren't accomplishing anything. You can park a vehicle inside a ship inside a ship and the physics engine doesn't smite everyone. Ship to ship refueling is now a thing. The actor status system is increasingly a thing with in-depth medical and survival statuses (including eating/drinking). They just increased the server player caps from 50 to 100. 109 ships and vehicles can be bought in-game. Random loot generation is now in and a whole bunch of weapons are now loot-only instead of being sold in shops. There's a river on microTech and it's a testbench for a river tool where a few clicks will drop thousands on a planet. New content and features every three months. How is this in any way not accomplishing things, unless the only thing you consider "accomplished" is a fully-featured finished game and you can't accept anything less?

  • @DeanShanra

The main issue they have is they believe an expansion is a separate gameplay loop added to their game rather than something that enhances their current gameplay loop. If you enjoy trading, you will find it very difficult to buy materials that you need to upgrade your jump drive. I don't know if this has changed but as a trader you should be able to buy materials with your credits like you would a new ship but instead with engineering you are required to fit yourself a new ship which gets you to a planet in the middle of nowhere to abuse a save and reload feature to get yourself the needed materials. Same thing with on foot exploration. Being an elite trader making millions of credits an hour you would think you can buy the best armor money can buy, but no, the best armor money can buy requires you to run around illegally stealing items most of the time to hopefully get lucky and find a rare item that you can upgrade your armor with. It kills immersion because it forces you to be something you don't want to be in the game just for the sake of ensuring one gameplay loop doesn't give you an unfair advantage in another loop. At the end of the day knowledge of profitable trade runs and reflexes in firefights are the true advantages in the game, doesn't matter how many credits you have if a better skilled player comes along so, please, stop putting a wall between each of your new features because it's really becoming noticeable now that the pilot is separated from the ship, it actually feels like you are playing two separate games now which don't complement each other.

At this point, I think Frontier's best possible path forward is two steps:
    1) make it stable. No glaring bugs, get rid of planetary tech issues
    2) put their full efforts into narrative. Give us a story - a REASON to keep playing. Start in investing in the whole Raxxla myth. Make it an alternate galaxy that the guardians went to to get away from the thargoids. I don't care, but give us SOMETHING to do other than jump, scan, rinse and repeat.

But as an avid explorer currently on hiatus, I wish they would fix some of the most basic elements of the game: Their effing graphics: the texture and shadow popping, and the damn hard horizon lines. as a software developer, my takeaway here is that the 4.0 update seems to polish up the code base, possibly with extensive refactoring to get back in line with architecture again. in any software development program with limited time and/or budget its not unknown to have technical debt and in a game that consists of a lot of different aspects and professions you can imagine that that will provide you with a lot of technical difficulties as long as they're not corrected. I also wouldn'y be surprised if consoles are adding another layer of complexity here which hampers the development.
A few years back I've played APB: Reloaded for quite some time. a game which has died in the few years after it was acquired by a small and passionate development team that was promising to refactor the game. the game had been facing tremendous development issues to the point where the only 'content' they could add to the game was a new map every now and then, add a different kind of mission using the same mechanics that were already implemented and add some new weapons because these all basically fit the same template with different stats. this process for them started back in 2018 where they started unifying all of the code base to Unreal Engine 3.5 (previously built in unreal 3 and Visual Studio 2012!) and then upgrade to unreal 4. fast forward to today they are still working on that same process. Software development done shitty can be a hell of a task to correct and a game doesn't just consist of code.
I hope that Frontier is making a same kind of step with this elite 4.0 update and im here for it.
