We speculate, we talk good and bad about this game, sometimes we love it, sometimes we hate it, but, at the end of the day, we hardcore scifi players, know that this is the space game we were waiting for a lifetime.
Nope, game mechanics yes, ridiculously good game mechanics, actual meaningful content no, no to the point that I can't even be bothered. Its like building a bridge that goes to nowhere. You can walk across it, but the journey is more meaningful than what you'll get at the end. Its the game that could have been, but isn't.
agree
Quester91 no
Then you're not playing it right. Take your bored ass over to the CoD channel
What about non-existing construct?
Can't wait for space legs. Walking around ships, stations, and interesting places on the ground.
Me too...me too. It has to be the main selling point from Season 3.
Yes please!
as long they don't charge us with another $40
you want legs? pay 40 bucks...
Depends on how much content they add with it. Getting up out of the pilot chair and stretching wouldn't be worth it.
Michael Spivey get star citizen dude. You won't be disappointed!!
I do look forward to what this game will become. It's far fetched, but what i'll love to one day see. Is the ability to buy your own star systems in the Galaxy, with the price based on resources and planets. And set up colonies on your own planet, by building landing pads, beacons, accommodations, defenses, bars and just places to hang out. AI people could ask to move and settle on your planet. And will pay you to transport them there. But to be able to build stuff, you'll need resources. Resources you can get yourself. Or you could set up some kind of message board so you can pay other players to get them for you. You can sell parts of your planet for other players to settle on. I just think it would be a great way of expanding players across the Galaxy. Allowing multiple stop points across the Galaxy for players to refuel, rearm and just see what you have for sale. Such as modules, resources and 2nd hand ships for alot less money. Players can scan Star systems near you, and then sell you the data so you can find out where all the different resources are near you, to help build your colony. Once you have a certain amount of AI people living in your colony, and you become rich. You can start building your very own orbital station. Just an idea. But could you imagine how cool that would be haha. Maybe one day. :)
What a great idea :) Can you please wright to Fronier and request that in next patch lol
I wish I could buy an astroid and fill it with guns so it looked like a hedgehog. Then it could protect me from griefers, all others are most welcome :)
I think this can be very hard especially if you considering that you could ,,technically" build walls to block systems like Fehu , Ceos&Sothis
David Braben himself was talking in one of the early dev diaries about things like - when a faction in a system gets wealthy and strong, they can begin building their own station. You could see the station being built. All of that would open new possibilities for missions, he was even talking about some specific stuff that can be now possible with passengers.
But David Braben's vision has also always been that the core gameplay should always be mainly about you as a commander, not a management game. So I think they do want these things added, just without the "players buying planets" element. That could also bring some problems like people getting territorial ("This is my planet, you can't mine here you scum!") etc. etc.
+Ondřej Saska a Corvette costs ~150million a Farragut Battlecruiser ~1000million I would say. A station ~10000million, a rocky planet with metall costs ~100000million and a earth like planet costs the double and so on. You know you can only earn, with a large ship and a good trade route, +-2million. How long does it take to buy a whole system with many planets and stations?
What I wanna see is, being able to get my pilot off their ass and walk around the damn ship, and possibly even stations, then I'll be really happy
that's coming with an fps Gameplay
*GALNET Breaking News*
This just in: Pilots Federation finally alllows CMDRs to get up onto their feet, no longer bolted to seats
I would be happy too.
And yet I'm scared knowing how shallow FD's design decisions are. Planetary landings - engineering-wise being quite an achievement - turned out to be novelty that wore off very quickly, and there is not much to do right now. Passenger missions? More cargo hauling... You can see that theme being used over and over, where very, very simple game mechanics are reused over and over, instead of being worked upon.
So, is waling inside your ship going to be the same kind of quick-wearing-off novelty as planetary landing was?
I hope not, but at the same time, evidence shows it is possible.
AkarZaephyr Been having a hell of a lot of fun doing planetary stuff with friends on an expedition recently. There certainly doesn't seem to be much to do gameplay-wise on planets, but the amount of possibilities that the gameplay supports (especially in multiplayer) is large.
***** I agree with you - if you have friends around, planets can be a lot of fun. Sadly, I barely have an hour a day to play so I'm not joining any expeditions as I would struggle to even keep up, let alone engage in some meaningful way.
I will remain a total fanboy of Elite Dangerous. It's by far my favorite game. The game is so beautiful and awe-inspiring. The battles are intense and epic. The devs themselves are lovely creative people that really care about their game and it shows so much. Not to mention this wonderful community with yourself, ChaosWulff, Kornelius, Dr. Kaii, Troa, Mars & Spawrks... all the great people on the forums... I have complete confidence that this will remain my favorite game for a long long time and I'm so excited for every update coming!
You are right, you are realy a total fanboy :)
As every game in the world
Helder Perez Of course not! Part of loving something is being critical of it so it can be the best! 😊
Exactly
xman2008 dont forget fuel rats man!
I wish more people could see the big picture instead of nit-picking at every little thing.
And when the big picture is finished, we wont be nit-picking. We will instead be rat-hunting.
But the big picture is always comprised of all the little things. We nit-pick because we want the game to be at its very best!
Elrarion2 Why the fk do you people want to hunt Fuel rats?
Artorias the Abysswalker For the fuel of course.
Artorias the Abysswalker Don't try putting words into my mouth, i didn't say anything along the lines of that.
You took my first message not the way i intended it to be and i though you were joking.
So i joked along. Never seen a fuel rat let alone killed one.
Wonderful video, as always. Thanks for the reminding how far Elite already has come, how true the lovely people of Frontier kept to their vision and how exciting the ongoing journey still can (and will) be :)
i feel like this game sorely needs atmospheric landings.. ive explored a bunch and finding an earthlike is nice and all.. but the true excitement would be going down there and seeing what its like.. walking around.. basically the stuff that no mans sky tried to do.. but not so cheesy and repetitive
chilly22 it's going to have atmospheric landings. But to do that properly it takes time. To add populated cityscapes and shops etc takes even longer. It will come you just have to be patient.
Triple Six I agree with you. It will come, however it will also take some time, since FDev is not a huge studio and their working capability is also limited and they're also working on many other things, Character Creation, the current Beta, Multi-Crew-ships and so on, for instance.
well in 2010 they make a game with cityscapes and shops etc,and lot of npc people, but the publisher can it.
If they're going for physics accuracy, then they'll have to model air friction. And not just air like on Earth, different gases will have different properties. Different ships will have different aerodynamic properties. They could also restrict atmospheric landings to aircraft that can be dropped into the atmosphere from orbit by larger ships.
That takes a lot of work, i don't think ED will pull this out. Repetitive is the hardest part to avoid. Star citizen is focusing a lot of it's money on creating the procedural tech (aside from creating new ships to sell) which supose to be enough to create hundreds of worlds with a lot of content. We need to wait and see...
I love it when you make these sort of videos ObsidianAnt! I highly value your speculations, and every time you mention something about the future of Elite, I get that feeling of excitement for the future that never seems to get old.
FD's real problem is that they are severely under-capitalized. They cannot hire enough help to meet their delivery goals.
Wait What? The only "delivery goal" they missed so far was 2.1 and the 2-3 month setback. Otherwise they kept to their release dates so far.
I must admit I don't understand financial reports very well, but on the most recent public report from Frontier, they seemed to have a good amount of money to hand.
I doubt money is the real problem. Just a lack of manpower.
Where can I find this report?
UltimateBargains it may or may not be a money problem, i can understand both. I think they are taking the safe route. If they hire too many people it can be a crowd. They won't make the game faster if they have to many people falling over eatch other, it will be dangerous cause their money will drain way to fast for them. They did'nt have the luck of funding the same crazy amount of money like lets say Star Citizen. And even they keep milking the supporters to buy ships for many 100+$ for a game that has barely any gameplay. What i find sad is that when Frontier charges 20$ for a year of content(which i dont mind) people will scream and whine about it, yet some of the same people who complain about small 20$ dont see any problem in wasting 100+$ on ships in Star Citizen. People want E.D to grow but they won't support with money. In that case Frontier are better off Playing it safe to avoid going bankrupt. I have been trying to support them some extra by buying extra skins for all my ships, cause i love Elite and want it to grow. Anyway that's what i think:) sorry about my spelling im danish.
I am pretty sure that season 3 will be about walking around, at least on the own ship. It makes sense, the commander creator in 2.3 will be the preparation for it, and so far Frontier has added new features in the most basic form and then expanded upon it. So they probably will want to have all the basic gameplay released as soon as possible, and then flesh out everything.
as far as I know the ships don't have gravity. ...but I'm not sure. ... so it would be better if you would walk on station .
Admiral General N.N. The pilots wear magnetic boots which makes walking around possible. Walking around the ships is definitely a planned feature, they often talked about this.
***** You obviously underestimate the scale of the ships.
SaHaRaSquad yeah that would be the realistic possibility
The sidewinder is about the size of a private plane, with a wider fuselage and no wings. Most of the space will probably be taken up with the FSD and the cargo hold, but there is definitely space to walk around in.
Obsidian ant this is by far the most heartfelt excitement video you've posted please keep these upcoming update information running your doing a great job
Elite Dangerous: I can be the slowest developed game in history.
Star Citizen: Hold my beer
Hahaha 2020, no space legs this year or atmo, and no big change since this video was made and no new update later 2021 so what you say about SC dev?
I really like how you always stay positive, but never ignore or sugarcoat Elite's flaws.
Honestly even walking around the cockpit would be amazing at this point. I've been sitting in that chair for over a year. Just being able to stroll the deck of my Anaconda and enjoy the view would add a lot for me.
+Lucas Smith Try Star Citizen
Dear ObsidianAnt. Thank you so much for putting time and effort into your videos each day.
oh this video made me really excited about any surprises they might sneek into the game soon!
I come from the future. It’s s not as bright as you hope.
I'm not particularly excited for the ship-launched-fighters, but I sure am excited for the station interiors, planetary maps, etc.
Im a fresh commander in Elite Dangerous (bought the game yesterday), and i just wanted to say that your videos really helped me decide about buying or not. THANKS.
The Picture Made Me Scream In Exitment
yep same
That was the point
ObsidianAnt THANK - YOU ! I was waiting for a video on the future of Elite from you and you did it ! keep them coming.
I'm guessing the future of Elite, is currently unknown, and probably sometime after today
the total money that you'll have to spent is also unknown
the average person will live a lifetime
The average human produces enough skin to cover it's entire body
Stewart Savage Every living human being is alive
The captain of the HMS Obvious is the OP.
Elite just keeps looking better and better, can't wait to be able to walk around my ships and possibly the insides of stations and outposts.
My character is going to have the biggest BOOOOOOBS in the Milky-Way, so big i won't be able to see the controls... And will be a MAN!
inside of ships and landing on atmospheric planets (with possibly Sol) are the two main things I'm looking forward to.
elite has always been an immersive game, but I feel like we could go even further. currently we're stuck in our seats, ship scales and world scales are not always easy to understand, and we could just be in front of a screen showing us space.
but walking inside ships would add a new level of immersion, being able to really feel like we're inside it and not just looking by a camera fixed on the seats.
and landing on earth-like planets would remind us that we are indeed in our galaxy, that we are from a human planet, and that we did not just born inside a ship cockpit in a random space station lost in the middle of nowhere.
2019: There's no walking around. So sad.
Obsidian, this is a fantastic video. Perhaps one of your best. Perfectly captures how I'm feeling about things ED at the moment. Slowly but surely we're getting there!
The main problem with Elite is not the content, it's the core design/systems. It's like adding more guns to fix Counter Strike when the problem is how the gunplay mechanics itself act. E.g. 2.2 Has some excellent quality of life fixes, but not core content - ship launched fighters are essentially a new weapon type, nothing more to change the core gameplay.
It's still NPC grinding upon NPC grinding. Just with different weapons in different zones. No meaning behind it, no depth.
What would be meaning and depth behind it? Besides, you know, obvious "story mode" stuff which is silly as it sounds?
Pēteris Krišjānis good question. Stuff like making powerplay and minor factions be something more deep then farming NPC's forever. etc
in these sandbox game, you have to find your own story. you should consider ED is a game like mount and blade and kerbal space program.
maxpayne28 that's not always true. finding your own story is more of an "RP" pseudo-Game (Seriously all games you can RP your own story)
Sandbox just means you aren't tied to a linear progression path. e.g. Ultima/EVE you had deep crafting/market/pvp/pve/industry, literally play the entire game without killing anything,. while WoW a themepark game is level > dungeon > raid > finish in linear order.
xwize Haha exactly. But the sad thing is, it's going to be years before a good sandbox game comes along that is like EVE or UO. So many try but they try to cater to every audience and end up fucking it up (Game design conflict of interest with so many audience to cater to) and making into a pve themepark grinder, except with less themepark content then a real one.
Can't wait to see what else is in store for the game :)
I want to walk around my ship, eva on planets, eva in space and walk around stations
brilliant as always. you know, your videos were the reason I bought ED last month, and I've been absolutely loving it. keep up the good work!
So long as Frontier doesn't get lazy as time goes on... *clears throat loudly.. LIKE, REAL LOUD*
...then I'm more than willing to keep throwing my money at their collective faces xD
Cristiano Rossi what are you coughing at? Dayz? Star Citizen? Ark? Or just that entire trend
ark?
Yuri Lalli ala the paid expansion fiasco
Joshua Engle I'm just saying in general, to Frontier.... on behalf of the community - I do have faith in them - but so long as we're continuing to support them (Braben and his vision), they'd just better not get lazy on us... that's all...
like I said, I have faith in him and his team... Hell, I trust the guy..... I just don't want them to take advantage of our trust.
because yes... the videogame industry is full of corruption and grossnesstocity.
I put around 350 hrs into the game about a year after release, built a cockpit, bought a full TM Warthog + pedals setup, etc. I later stopped playing shortly after Horizons released because I was simply burnt out. The aspects of the game I was looking forward to, were not planned to be implemented until much later (walking around, exploring bases and interacting with other CMDR's / NPC's). I did how ever have enough faith we would eventually see these things that I bought the lifetime pass when it was available. I have kept an occasional eye on the game ever since, and have enjoyed your videos during those times. Thanks for keeping us wandering CMDR's informed.
As much as I like Elite and was playing it day 1 in the alpha/beta, it's as you said ObsidianAnt its still very bare bones and not much as far as game play. I REEEEEAAAALLY dont like how it seems like they shifted away from adding legit game play elements/content to the game and focused on nothing but community driven events as game play where players are making stuff up to do b/c the lack of things to do in game. I like the game but it's been moving at a snails pace since day 1. I dont see the game getting planets with life and landing on them. I think Elite started as a spaceship sim and it will probably stay that way for a very long time. I just dont think the game engine is capable of doing much else besides the space aspect so they might as well pump up the variety in that area, which goes back to me not being happy about them just doing nothing and putting limelight on community events.
Elite is going to be left in the dust unless it hurries up and defines itself and maximizes that so that players say "I can only get that experience in Elite Dangerous"
*nods* I really wish they would take some of the best features from EVE Online (Player-Owned-Structures), Minecraft (Player-Built-Structures), Freelancer (Quest/Story)
Well internet tough guy(Sith Hippious) prove other wise the game engine can. It's already stuttering and losing fps like crazy with just horizons added in on my i7 16gb ram and top of the line EVGA GTX 1070. Game ran fine before Horizons on a single GTX 760 which proves they are not going to be able to add much more to the game planets which are 99% barren now.fuking Xbox's and PS4's are gonna have seizures if they ever give them Horizons. Then they can be disappointed as well with the lack of anything going on in the game.
Playing perfectly fine on ps4 right now so another misstep here
This video was randomly suggested to me in 2020. Looking back you can really see how little it's changed. And still no Space Legs
we need an updated video
been 10 months.
I don't think that I have ever been this hyped for walking in my life.
I hope I can just carry around a huge tank in my ship instead of the little scout buggy, soon.
When I see beautiful artwork of an anaconda over a green city, I take that as a commitment to it happening.
But whats coming after walking around and doing EVA operations?
Landing on Atmospheric Planets
Owning Capital Ships
Landing on Planets with Life
Cities
Owning a capital ship? Or just be able to control one at some time (in a conflict zone for example)? It would be a huge change in the gameplay because it means that player could destroy space stations etc.
Thanks for this video, nicely put together and revealing a glimpse into ED's future!
I want to be able to land on earth like planets and watch civilization and actually be able to walk through cities
Star Citizen.
+Garon Bradley too demanding on computers some people don't want to buy a better computer for one game
the FDL and that city at the end of the video gives me hope
I
LOVE
ELITE
But seriously, I don't think the development speed is lower than with other studios, I would argue Frontier is even faster than some other studios (ehm - RSI).
imagine walking in your ship . In a lost battle you hit a button and then your being sort of ejected into outer space , to then call someone to rescue you , your friend a friendly ship or getting kidnapped by pirates . I can just imagine for Season 3
I WANT THIS. This explains how the CMDR survives the destruction of his ship
But I think this should be an Modul
Thing is, what would stop the pirate from just blowing up your escape pod anyway and what would happen after that?
Yeah I just want to be able to call the Federal security services whenever damn pirates try to attack or hijack me.
Ian Beckmann I really wish you could eject
I hope they put in Player homes sometime in a more distant future after character creation has been made. Or ability to establish own colonies on planets or space.
Well, David Braben said that he really doesn't want Elite to become a management game.
You mean like buying rooms at stations to make it more of an personal experience
Ian Beckmann Something like that. Perhaps buy furnitures etc. to decorate. It would be a nice thing to have as a social area for friends :)
maybe even to store cargo for engineers like CMM or this or that something like this would be nice
I'm not sure if player homes would really fit into the game, mostly because CMDRS are, essentially, akin to nomadic people, your ship is pretty much your home when it's anything cobra size and up. ownable colonies and space stations would be cool, but I don't think many really realise the amount of funds required to run something like that, we're talking billions upon billions annually, let alone the start up cash to build them (stations obviously being the most expensive) so I think they'd have to implement a mechanic for players to own their own corporations which multiple players are part of and all members pay a fee somewhere so that the ceo has funds to plan expansions to their corporation, much like in EVE online.
Man, it was really tough flying 22,000LY out to EOL PRAU, not because of the range and my stock FSD, but because I kept stopping to stare and the planets and such. What an incredible journey!
Sorry but to always see that they are working on future content, content that will ready us for future release, and so on. It's never about something we are getting any time soon. It's always something we are getting 6+ months from now and it's never here. I'm done waiting personally. If they release something worth my time, maybe I might come back, but I know I won't dump anymore money on this game/company for anything less than a complete full game. I won't be shelling out another $40 per module as they build it. Horizons really ruined it for me.
Much of "future content" they talk about has been released. This time last year, they were talking about planetary landings...which are now available. Then the future was Engineers - which are now out. After that Frontier were talking about Passengers and Ship Launched Fighters as the future - they are on the way in a matter of weeks. Multi-Crew isn't far away now.
But yes, I do agree - it would be great it this stuff came out faster. :)
ObsidianAnt I just don't think it's going to end up being what we want sadly. I really feel they went about the game all wrong. As bad as some of the press around Star Citizen has been, some founded and the majority unfounded, it's doing it right by building the game from the ground up and planning a release of the main content at one time. Elite's release of one module at a time, sure, got out ahead of all the other games but I feel it may have hurt it more than helped because it honestly felt like a fraction of a game because in the end, it was.
Well, at the moment its not planetary landings, its "just" landing on airless moons. So the real interesting places arent available at the moment. So this whole feature is far from beeing complete.
Gamedev here, Frontier's doing it the best way possible. We have a *game* that we can play persistently, and many great experiences and functional player factions and expeditions spanning months have been achieved.
Imagine if Minecraft didn't have reliable, functional multiplayer, or a proper movement system, or even an infinite procedural world all the way up to its release in November 2011. There would have been no game that people could have played together, no amazing coop builds, no massive servers, it would have been nothing like it is today.
***** OK. Here's the issue though, with giving the game to us in parts it's led to many people giving up the game. The problem was that features came too slowly for most and too few to continue to keep people interested. Most of all when you have new and more interesting games being released monthly. If you look at say a game like NMS, it was said many times "wide as an ocean but deep as a puddle." You can almost say the same thing about Elite. I would say maybe wide as an ocean and as deep as a river. It's better but not by much. Worst yet is when you then go into the pricing and see that features which were originally stated (way back when) to be included are now being pushed to a different dlc version. It's left a sour taste that some of us can't get over.
as always man love your videos.
I remember a youtube video were they were speaking with the Frontier Devs about what they wanted to see in ED in the future and nearly 70% of them had said about the ability to walk around your ship or the stations, Thats something I hope we will see in a years time, I know that can do and I know they want it to happen, but I love ED at the moment so I can wait lol
In the future when Star Citizen will be released and it's way ahead in the number of things (FPS, Space legs, atmospheric landings, interior details) - what' will FD do to keep their player base?
FD would rather hurry. Now they don't really have competition in hard space sci-fi, but in a year or so - they probably will.
when?
Well, I don't think FD will have to worry, because nobody's going to be playing vidyagames after *the heat-death of the universe*.
Star Citizen won't come out properly for two years. Also yeah, ask NMS how they succeeded taking away ED player base :)
Александр Бенкендорф when is star citizen scheduled for release?
I wouldn't worry most of us will be dead in 2080 when SC gets released.
Another great vid, would have been good to meet you at the Elitemeet, although I'd probably had a few too many!
I didn't realize when I bought it that $60 wasn't for the entire game including the future... so I was pretty ticked off to learn about having to pay more for content when I didn't perceive a lot of content initially. I tried playing it with a friend, but have just gotten very bored with it unfortunately. I'm not going to invest in further updates.
binaryalgorithm That's fine, some features are still available to base game players regardless of owning the expansions. You'll get extra stuff either way.
The only thing I want is atmospheric landings. Just imagine entering an atmosphere while a storm is raging. thunder through the sky next to you. heavy rain drops sound on your window. feeling the turbulence in your steering. and then getting out of that storm landing on a beautiful icy planet with a clear blue sky.
Another day, another Resource extraction site another 50 shot down ships for bounty, still not enough credits for a new ship or upgrades for old one.
Rinse and repeat tomorrow while hoping for Star Citizen to turn out good.
You seem to be playing the game in a very grinding way and I don't see why.
I'm not seeing any alternatives.
Tichondrius1 We just showed them to you.
Buying crap from point A. Taking it to point B. and doing it over and over again isn't grindy?
Tichondrius1 You're trying so hard to grind in this game. You know, when you do EVERYTHING over and over again, it becomes repetitive. Surprise! I'm doing all sorts of things, and, what a shock, I'm not grinding.
Two years, and I'm still waiting frontier!!!
How the hell can they afford continued development? This is among the greatest games (or simulations) of all time, if not the greatest. I hope they don't run out of money and resort to some fund-raising scheme that irritates & alienates a large portion of the player base thus bringing the whole project to a premature end.
There's only one game I'd consider spending $3k+ on a computer for and it's elite. Ultra settings on a QHD 3440 x 1440 display? Now that'd be something. HTC Vive? That'd be amazing.
I have a TrackIR 5 already, a 4k display and the x-55 HOTAS setup. But elite is really that only game in the world of the hundreds I play that makes me contemplate spending thousands on another huge PC upgrade for the next level experience.
I hope to one day be flying my ship using a VR helmet and with the flick of a switch to open up voice comm channel with another pilot I see in the massively-multiplayer universe.
Frontier have released their financial reports - as a UK public company they are legally bound to do this. They actually have a lot of money to hand, and are making plenty of cash from Elite. So it doesn't look like there will be any problem. For now, they are looking at least 5.5 years of life in the franchise - but I suspect it's very likely they will extend it well beyond that.
That's great news! I'll be buying every expansion/season.
KanadianSpaceProgram Yeah, I'm with you on that. The VR experience is by far one of rhe best experiences I have had in any game so fat.
Magpie Grun Agree. Makes you wonder how long it will last. I invested more in this game personally, that any other gaming experience to date.
The Rift and a Hotas 4 along with a 90 inch 4k monitor. I have never experienced a more immersing game than sitting in a VR setup with 5.1 surround. I only hope they can keep this wonderful ride going for some years to come.
In fact, we can already see that frontier is aiming for the "full voiceover" route, looking at flight controllers and tutorial missions (in 2.2 Beta 4)...
Fingers crossed...
so it's just trying to keep up with Star Citizen?
No idea. But these have been the plans for Elite Dangerous since day one, back in 2012.
Trying to keep up with a game that isn't out yet...
Ikr talk about desperate.
Star what? Some vaporware fraud scam pyramid scheme? I think I've heard of it.
Captain Zeppos well you clearly don't know what a pyramid scheme is and SC already offers more than elite dangerous whilst not even being in alpha
The David Attenborough of space exploration lol, some stunning video shots there OA, game just gets better and better and I've only just started playing!!!
I very seriously doubt we will ever see atmospheric landings - I cannot see how using current tech this would be possible to do properly. How are they going to model our own planet earth for example - unless in the future all cities and towns have been obliterated. Perhaps we will never be able to land on the planet earth in a similar way we currently cannot land on our own moon even though it is has no atmosphere.
There are quite a few tech engines out there that can do full scale atmospheric planets. Check out Outerra or Space Engine.
Cities are a different subject entirely, and won't be around for a very long time. First up with be atmospheric planets without any form of life (like Venus and Mars etc).
star citizen already showed atmospheric landings with aerodynamics, i see no reason elite couldnt do the same.
Atmospheric planets and life-bearing planets are simple enough. Obsidian already SpaceEngine and Outerra, as examples. And most planets with atmospheres do not have life, so I think we can expect to see atmospheric landings on lifeless planets before we see landings on Earthlikes and such. Airless planets does seem like it was the "first step", where the second will probably be barren, atmospheric worlds. (I say this because the Orbital Glide Phase of the surface approach feels like a prototype of atmospheric flight, and a system for atmospheric entry)
-In the solar system, this would be Venus, and perhaps also Titan, if they want to bring out surface liquids alongside this. And with some luck, flight in gas giant atmospheres, if they endeavour to have volumetric clouds. That would be incredible!
And again, you can go download SpaceEngine and Outerra for free and see some of these elements for yourself. SpaceEngine actually has an array of smaller features promised in Elite, like accretion around black holes!
When it comes to civilisation, that I agree is something else. But then again, think of it this way: would you be happy with hundreds of giant, noisy starships whizzing about where you live all the time? They could very easily make a lot of civilisation appear present and detailed from above without having up-close details, especially on heavily colonised planets with settlements as large as mankind's abode on Earth, and then just have designated "No-Fly" zones above those areas. And instead, certain districts or cities would have areas where commanders could fly closer. For comparison, think of the Concorde airplanes. They were told not to hit supersonic speeds before being well away from where people actually lived, because that's pretty noisy. This would just mean that you wouldn't be permitted to fly right up to someone's surburban neighborhood, or lodge your Sidewinder in between two skyscrapers. This would hide an understandable lack of up-close detail and preserve the immersion.
And on non-colonised planets this would obviously not be the case, as it's easier to procedurally generate nature up close. Outerra generates individual blades of grass, after all.
As for our Earth, that's a whole other can of worms, yes. We have so much real and detailed data there than it'll be impossible to replicate on the level of detail Frontier likes, and impossible to procedurally imitate. Expect Earth to be a no-fly.
In short, I'm very confident that we will see atmospheric landings, but that they'll be implemented gradually, with civillian-inhabited Earth-like planets being the very last stage.
But Star Citizen a different team and game engine that had the foresight that they where going to do those things so they made sure the engine was going to be ready down the road for it. Elite on the other hand not so much. Elite will most likely stick to being mainly a spaceship sim, which I have to say its very good at and shouldn't get itself confused and slowed down by other games goals and ambitions, which is exactly what feels like Elite is in right now.
Known planets will never be landable, I don't think.
But with planets outside our current one? Simple procedural generation rules. That's the golden rule. Games already showcase this quite well. Elite dangerous already has a robust generation system. Games like the old Elder Scrolls, even. Back in nineteen fucking ninety two, they were randomly generating entire cities for you to wander around in, with inns, blacksmiths, buildings, etc.
Seven days to die procedurally generates entire cities for you to loot, and destroy as you wish.
Planet Explorers is a great example of procedural generation of forest terrains, if not a great example of an actual game.
All they have to do is just say 'right, Sol is off-limit for planetary landings' and literally any other planet is fine with procedural generation.
I, for one, can't wait to land on a water planet somewhere, and sit on the beach on an alien planet and watch the ocean. I have full faith that Frontier will make it absolutely amazing.
My 321 on what I am looking foreward to in futuer Elite:Dangerous updates are:
3. Landing on a beach at a tourist resort on a planet with an atmosphere, and maybe taking out a speedboat-style srv to ride the waves.
2. The ability for players to create missions, being able to select credits and/or items as payment.
1. Interact with mining facilities in asteroid belts, science facilities stationed near points of interest, and military facilities of minor, major, and pirate powers.
What are yours?
Is number 2 confirmed? Because if not then i don't think it will ever happen.
I want to be able to land on all planets too, not just the barren, boring, rocky deserts. And I would like to have my own outpost, but knowing ED it will probably take 1000 hours of grind just to afford the foundations.
I'm pretty confident that S3 will be about space legs.
It simply would fit into Frontiers plan to lay the groundwork first before adding the details.
And it would open up a lot of more potential stuff to do, ship interiors, station interiors, planetary structure interiors, EVAs in space as well as on planets etc. ...
The passion, its so beautifull :) keep up the good work!
it would be a good idea to have station on planets for big ships to land on and even explore and walk around inside the space station, going to shop, bars and hotels.
The game today compared to release is incredible, it's been slow progress but meaningful and worthwhile. I took a 6 month break about 8 months ago, and since I've come back I've fallen back in love with elite. It's a truly magical game
I suspect S3 will be the time for walking around and atmospheric landings because in order to be able to move on bodies with dense atmospheres an SRV might be very unsuitable since they are designed for roving on airless surfaces thus your own feet would suit alot more
When walking around ships come out, I want nothing more than to decorate the insides of my ships in different styles without having to pay £5 per photo on the wall. Even if decorating is as simple as the apartment interior options in GTA V, I would still love to do it.
And this is one of the reasons why I keep playing. Elite is far from perfect, but I see the pieces slowly being added, a solid base to build an incredibly detailed universe where a story can unfold, and we can interact with in more detail.
Frontier just need to be a little more proactive and transparent with their plans. I understand they dont want to give too much away, but sometimes it feels we are a little shut out. Well, from my perspective anyway.
But I am in it for the long haul. People confuse my criticism with negativity, but the exact opposite is true. I am so positive for this game, I just want it to get better and better.
this means we can finally enjoy a show in the type-9's concert hall!
Absolutely subscribed to Your channel. Haven't played in a while now but Your Videos really motivate me to give it another shot and most importantly make me eager to play the future builds. Thank You for Your time! I also enjoy Your voice. It's calming and narrative! :)
Cheers!
I feel like if they added new features/improvements to existing things into the game in pieces every few weeks instead of cramming it all into a giant patch every 3-5 months the player count and retention would be much higher, allowing them to to put even more money into development. My problem with the game so far is that new content takes so long to come out that I get burnt out on the old in a months time. New content, even if it's something small yet noticeable, every few weeks would go a long way to alleviate this.
Voice acting? Sweet, I hope they let me do some. I was Chip Washington in Galnet News youtube channel. :D
I wouldn't be shocked if they introduce surface storms to landable planets. That would be really interesting to add to an update. Driving around on a planet and sneaking up behind you is a massive dust storm! Tumbleweeds in space!
With the avatars it does look like a first person element beyond just piloting. Imagine full blown planet wars. Down o. The surface with space landing tanks etc 👍
Thing I'm wondering is when is walking in stations coming out
I really hope that somewhere in season 3 - probably towards the ends of it - that we'll be able to land on atmospheric planets. The star citizen atmospheric planet landing footage from games con just blew my space nerd mind
I really want them to introduce missions that pay a lot more for a wing of players, instead of a solo player. I would love to see more wings, also take part in them.
That city at 12:00 looks truely stunning. I hope we'll see that in the future.
The last picture... OMG I can't wait
second that..OMG when will we see this in game...droooling
Great watch and some fair points on the future. I enjoy your vids, so subscribed. Keep up the good work bud :)
Thank god for iterative development. I'm so glad that FD went down this route.
id love some on station gameplay where you can earn credits like maybe engineering, scientist or maybe even some kind of publuc servant. Would be amazing though if they added some kind of military role in avatar gameplay like being able to be part of the raiding party when one faction takes over another station.
Great video! Can't wait for 2.2 to hit XB1!
good work obsidian ive since not played elite much after i got my conda i sorta dropped away for the next little while till i start getting back into it again. as always excellent work obsidian
IDEA: No more using outfitting/shipyard/station elements from the cockpit: You'll have to get out of the ship, move your ass from the landing pad, and find the offices, terminals or marketplace, buy the equipment yourself, and outfit it, though it'll take 'time' ingame. Or you can pay someone else to install the module much faster. This could let the player explore the station while their ship is worked on. First-person bounty hunting, maybe?
I dislike this, it should be optional not forced. Other wise its another pain in the arse aspect of this game.
I do get really excited talking about this. Just another 6 months latest until we find out whats next!!
you should be a story teller obsidian ant could listen to you all day lol
Almost 50k subscribers, congrats!
I am new to the game and it is an exciting time! I can't wait to see some of these settlements...and Aliens
What i'd love to see is more non playable ships around, in convoys. I loved how it felt playing FreeLancer a few years back.
player housing on stations maybe? also something id like to see is like when you are walking around a station in the future you can see what other people have achieved via the medals they wear or something like that
It'd be cool to have a home station. You'd be able to walk to your own living spot in your choice station & get to customize it to your fitting.
What we need now is some looks at the content coming in 2.3 & some hints as too what is coming for season 3
I just really want to be able to own and grow one of those little planetary settlements, with a little planetary faction, with a room full of unique trinkets and a bay full of cargo.
What I want to see is if the ships (especially explorer ships) have a loo and sleeping space.
Great post, as always. Can anyone remember roughly when FD released the details of Season 2? Late 2015? Just thinking ahead to when we might learn what their plans are for the next year or so of S3.
That last screenshot! I want that!!!
I started playing a couple of days ago on ps4 and man i love and the game already, and im so hyped for the future of elite! And thank you obsidianant for the awesome content!
Now that they are introducing fighter bays on the larger ships, I would like them to introduce a dedicated carrier ship. Something with limited mobility and firepower of it's own, but capable of carrying 4-6 fighters. I would think that could be fun to have a more support oriented ship.
