  • Welcome to The Best Movie You NEVER Saw, a column dedicated to examining films that have flown under the radar or gained traction throughout the years, earning them a place as a cult classic or underrated gem that was either before it’s time and/or has aged like a fine wine.
Based on the column created by Paul Shirey and currently written by Chris Bumbray for JoBlo.com, this video version of the column features narration by Bumbray and editing by Lance Vlcek. For our sixth episode, we take a look at Joe Dante's INNERSPACE, starring Dennis Quaid, Martin Short & Meg Ryan.

Yeah, a lot of these are definitely aimed at those too young to see them at the time they came out at the cinema and weren't the biggest of hits when they did like this one. I remember going to see it, and loving it, but none of my friends saw it.

Not just you. I saw "Innerspace," and many others in this series. But then I'm 74; and I saw almost every movie that came out, up until Hollywood tanked in the early 2000s. Since then I've drifted away from it.
Just got back from "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood," which I saw only because my significant other wanted to see it ("Yes, dear...") and the last one before that was Judi Dench in "Philomena" in 2013. That's two movies I've seen in theaters in six years.
Maybe if more of them were like "Innerspace," it would be different.

Had pretty much forgotten this movie until watching this tribute, and ended up downloading and re-watching it today. Had it on VHS back in the day and watched many times, but that was 30+ years ago. Still a good watch today, with some good visual effects, strong leading cast, and of course an intriguing story. Very Amblin-esque family-friendly harmless fun movie which deserved a better run at the box office, but as said here it did very well as a video tape rental, which is how I watched it many times back then (or I just recorded it off cable tv like most people).

The fact that the movie wasn't a summer blockbuster means that whoever marketed the movie was bad at their job. Marketed right it could have been that summer's biggest money maker. Dennis and Meg were great but the standout was Martin Short. Watching him in this role made me realize what a comedic genius he is. No other actor or comedian could have pulled that role off.

The difference between Innerspace and Summer Blockbusters today is the characters and story. Innerspace has a really cool story and likeable characters that you root. Today’s summer blockbuster is more about wowing you.

This movie is an absolute treasure. I've seen it so many times and it is always amazing. It's a bit bizarre but never goes over the edge. I guess you could say that about most of Joe Dante's work. Gremlins 2 is a similar experience which also has another perfect performance from Robert Picardo. It's not just the voice either. His whole physicality changes when he's Putter playing Cowboy. It's brilliant. It was nice to see him achieve fame to a degree with Voyager but he never showed off his acting to the same degree.

Joe Dante is horrendously under appreciated. He actually did a movie a few years back called "The Hole" which was quite good, but due to some weird issues with distribution was only theatrically released in the UK. It feels a lot like a movie version of a story you would see in Dante's TV series "Eerie Indiana".

I met Vernon Wells a few years ago at a con and told him something he probably never hears, that this was my favorite movie he was in. He laughed and told me an awesome story about it. He said he met with Spielberg about this part because he had seen him in MM2 and Commando and thought he would be perfect, but that it would be a challenge. The character would be mute, missing a hand and always hiding behind sunglasses, but had to be menacing. He jumped at the opportunity after that meeting. I think he nailed it. Mr Igo is one of my fave villains of all time.

My friend and I howled with laughter throughout the movie (Martin Short was perfectly cast) and I was really surprised it flopped (which unfortunately meant that no sequels were in the works). The way they've been rebooting movies lately, I've often thought this one would be an excellent candidate. It could even be a sequel with Martin Short helping out somehow.

Just came from "Rick and Morty -- Anatomy Park (S1:Ep3)" ... I forgot how much LOVE was put into 80s effects movies

Absolutely love this movie. I also think a lot of the special effects really play well in today's CGI era

Saw it in the theater in 8th grade by myself while my mom went shopping. Win/win there! Absolutely loved it then and love it now.
But seriously, what's not to like? The whole production was top-shelf. Great (if slightly recycled) concept, excellent script, hularious fun for all ages comedy, oscar winning vusual effects, perfect music by one of the greats, terrific cast including Martin Short at his very best, it's just cinema gold. Joe Dante is one of the best to ever do it and a he's a personal favorite of mine. He's so zany and cartooney and creepy all at the same time. His segment in the Twilight Zone Movie was by far the best of 4 awesome vignettes which says a lot. He's not underrated as people who know his work give him high praise but he's definitely criminally underappreciated as he's the least known by name of his more famous contemporaries. His creative aesthetic was unique and wondrous.
Thanks for all the great times Mr. Dante!

Then you should see "Flesh and Bone", with Quaid, Ryan and James Caan. She's got a great scene. Such a beautiful woman.

Indeed, some of the greatest movies were made in the 80s. Sad to see most of those actors old and tired now....

Ahhh I love this movie, haven't seen it in ages because I forgot what it's called. Nice post.
I think the art of story telling has taken a nose dive over the last two decades.

I never realised that was Robert Picardo!! I completely bought his character so much I assumed they found a guy exactly like the character to play him.

For me it was the scene where Jack was freaking out and the ship nearly went into his heart. I was like 4 and for 10 years after that the sound of a heartbeat would send me into a panic.

I will say that I used to watch this movie every single holiday I had when I was a kid. The TV channels I had back in the day would play it every time (not that I had an issue with it, I loved it!!) Great movie and super fun for fans of comedy, sci-fi and adventure genres!
