deep rising was one of the movies that got me and my dad to realize how full of shit reveiwers could be, got terrible reviews, but was one of our favorite movies of the year :>
Still one of my favourite guilty pleasures I think I might have watched it more than any other movie must have watched it hundreds or times lol I watched it yesterday for the first time in a few years still remember every word and tbh I was surprised how well it's aged
One of my favorite underrated movies ever. When friends are over and having fun, this movie never fails for first timers. The character Joey is up there with the all time greatest comic reliefs
“Ahhh...Now what?” (edit) Agree with many here. Saw it in the theater, thought it was a hoot, wanted a sequel. Have had it on DVD for years. Gotta love the closeup on Wes Studi’s eyes when he finds the gun is empty.
I'm a HUGE Treat Williams fan !!! I remember he did a movie for The Substitue-film series and of course other films. But,that's the movie I first saw him in.
The tollet death let's you know the movie doesn't take its self seriously, but, what a scene !!! LOL.And i didn't see Titanic at the cinema,so glad I didn't either !!! LOL.
😂😂 I consciously forgot this movie exists even though it has lived deep in my subconscious. Rewatched it because some random comment thread jogged my memory (knockoff Poseidon). Long story short, THIS is the reason why I always have to close the lid to any toilet 😂
The mid/late 90s was loaded with monster movies. Some great, some not so much. The Relic, Deep Rising, Mimic, Starship Troopers, Species...to name a few. Pretty entertaining decade for movies.
I literally just watched this movie like 2 days ago! I love this movie! It doesn’t go into a huge amount of detail about the creature of the movie but there’s enough mythology in it to really make you wonder if monsters are in the ocean like that!
LOVED THIS FILM! Growing up it was pretty out of nowhere but when my father rented it... it was awesome... you also feel a lot of mummy and that summers style. Love it!
I saw this in the theater and bought it on DVD when it came out. This movie never got a fair assessment by critics at the time, who seemed to want it to be a more serious, epic film. But, I never saw this movie as much more than a fun popcorn flick, and it excels at that in every way.
I was 15 when this movie released, I saw it like 3 or 4 times in the theatre and loved it. I a haven’t seen it for probably 20 years, I’ll have to watch it again.
I've loved this movie since it came out. I love the comedic dialog, and the lead character's fatalistic, now what? Sarcastic outlook is what made the movie so amusing to me.
I watched this movie a couple of times. I really enjoyed it. And that ending always had me wondering if he ended up on Skull Island or The Land That Time Forgot
This film scared the shit out of me when I was younger!! However, it's now a cult classic with an all star cast, as well as a mixture of action, heist, and horror. A fun ride from start to finish!
Anthony Heald deserves a shoutout for his role as the shady cruise ship owner who inexplicably knows about the creature; "Then they eat you, right?" "No, they drink you. They drink you alive!"
I saw this at the 1.50 matinee theaters after it's initial run. I had no idea what I was in for. My grandpa and I would just go to the movies and pick random movies and this was one of them. It was a great way to spend an afternoon for less than five bucks. I'm glad I got to see it in theaters, because a lot of people didn't.
100% seen this. I remember when it was still new-ish. Waited for it to come on the Movie Networks on our shipped sattelite back in the day, then recorded it on VHS and watched it a billion more times. Every time I brought it up to somebody then they thought I meant "Deep impact."
Spot on with everything, 100%. Deep Rising has been one of my favourite guilty pleasures since it came out; even bought it on Blueray. There is still a certain charm to the CGI (the ideas are great, even if the rendering aged badly), the gore is inventive, and there isn't a single actor who is not memorable (and the badass team is one of the best). I never realized until I saw your video that it was basically the 'dry run' for the Mummy; it makes perfect sense now! But, I'm sorry to say, G.I.Joe is just unforgivable. :)
This one of my favorite creature/monster movies of all time. It didn't get the attention and love it deserved!!!! And I loved Treat Williams in this movie.
I actually saw this in the theatre when it came out, and I loved it! The monster totally creeped me out back then, and it still does today. Funny that this video mentions the movie Titanic, because I remember how much the scene in the beginning where they show everyone having a party on the cruise ship reminded me of Titanic. Anyway, it's been really fun for me to revisit this movie just recently. I love how it mixes action, comedy, and horror very well. I can watch it over and over and never tire of it!
Always been a good watch. Hard to match against other movies made in 1998. My opinion is 1984, 1983, & 1998 were the best years of total quality in movies released
Definitely an obscure movie. Saw a recent thread, pretty big, in the Thalassophobia sub. This movie did NOT get a mention. It always stuck with me as a kid and I’ve never rewatched it until just a few hours ago. It traumatized me 😂
I first saw this movie on SciFi when I was like 8 or 9 years old. Me and my best friend at the time loved it. The lady getting pulled into the toilet made us laugh our asses off.
I agree 100 %. This is one of the most underrated movies with a massive cast, even if most of them weren't household names back then. Ironically I always thought that Treat Williams would have made a fantastic Han Solo. Not knowing until just now that Harrison Ford was considered for this role. I absolutely love this movie, it being right up there with my alltime faves, and I can only recommend, give this movie a chance, but dont take it too seriously. This really is a classic popcorn flick fun action movie with great lines and great effects. However the cast for this movie is overall perfect, Famke Jannsen being only one of the sauciest actresses to ever stage the screen besides the fact that she is one of the best actresses out there, and then there is Kevin O Connor, one loveable guy in this movie. This movie should have deserved so much more.
This is one of my favorites. Best scene the comedy relief sidekick gives the head mercanery a gun to shoot himself and instead he shoots at the sidekick.
I never heard of "Deep rising", but watching this clip made me "Wait a sec, I know this gem!", because it was named "Octalus" here. And yeah, I also wanted to get a sequel after the cliffhanger. Years later I watched King Kong and thought, they could have combined these.
I saw this and The Mummy in theaters upon release. Obviously, The Mummy was the more successful of the two, but this is equally as entertaining as a tongue in cheek moderate budget B monster film. Stephen Sommers showed with those two films that he has a knack for this type of genre exercise. It's a damn shame he hasn't been able to repeat it. (cont.)
I rented this movie back in the 90's and while it was fun (I loved the gory effects), I always thought the final creature was too hokey. I did like the ambiguous ending, and wouldn't mind revisiting this one again.
As a kid watching mexican television Canal Cinco 5; when my parents went on friday night dates, I saw this movie. It was always some goofy movie, an action film and then a horror feature at 9 after Chavo del Ocho. For YEARS i swore the 4th alien movie was set in a cruise ship. I was so confused because I remember so vividly the plot of Deep Rising being the same as Alien Resurrection. My goofy ass thought it was some Mandela effect but I got paramount plus and saw the trailer and I squealed in joy. This movie, poseidon and alien 4 all played on that same night. My parents had to stay at a hotel because it had started raining heavily and the highway was bumper to bumper. My grandma was babysitting me (i was like 11?) And fell asleep on the couch all night. I dont know why I thought the movies were one cohesive film but i was scared SHITLESS of water and toilets after these films.
I worked at a video store in the late 90's, early '00s. So I've seen most everything. I watched this a couple times. Great B movie. Loved the ending, wish it had lead to a sequel.
I remember enjoying the shit out of this movie when I saw it in the theater. I was just surprised how much fun I was having watching an unapologetically campy lark of a movie. And, of course Famke! Great fun!
Oh I have been *very* aware of DEEP RISING. I saw it in theaters after months of getting psyched for a real, bona fide monster movie with the (then) new CGI technology assisting it. So I have thankfully known about this film since the beginning.
Treat Williams was the perfect choice for the movie, but not for the marketing. This movie made me a fan of his ironically; He's got one foot in Nathan Fillion territory and one foot in Bruce Campbell territory.
Thanks for a vid about this film. Another thanks for showing the positive light of it. I saw it when it first came out and to this day I own it. Never was gonna be an award winner and such but it was great for what it was. Would have been awesome if cast got back together not long after release and made a second one. Treat Williams I've always enjoyed. With this film you mentioned MacGuyver....In this role I saw him as Lt. Peck (A-Team).
Oh yes - stumbled on it by accident years ago - Famke always getting my attention but on arrival of the creature - slack jawed!! - watched it again couple of months back - still stands up - sort of

That movie kicks ass.. So much fun, start to finish
Lines like "Money money money... then he gets the axe to the head. Lol
Deep Rising and Phantoms were two memorable movies from that time period. Love em.
Ben Affleck was the bomb in phantoms
Who was the bomb in Phantoms ?
Agreed. This movie is one of my favorites. Definitely go back to it often.

Kevin's character: Can't get that song out of my head (The Girl from Ipanema)
