The bit I really liked in Dragnet was when they kept trashing their patrol cars and they ended up driving a Yugo. "The cutting edge of Serbo-Croatian technology".

To be fair, the remix (which I also love) is a little long-winded. The album version is more of a classic reworking of the original theme; I never understood why they didn’t use that version.

Loved the movie version. I bought every variant of the Art Of Noise version that was commercially available at the time, 1987/88’. Including a remix tape that was produced. None of them were as good as the one used in the film. I had to connect a cassette player to my VCR back in the day to get a copy I could play in my truck.

My take on the films reviewed:
Dragnet - I liked Aykroyd's Joe Friday impression a lot and Hanks does a fine job playing counterpoint to his straight laced act. (7/10)
Adventures in Babysitting - I really like Elisabeth Shue and this is a great showcase for her. But, one question: did you really believe for a second that she was seventeen? Me neither. (7/10)
Innerspace - Now, here's my favorite of the movies reviewed in this episode. I love how this movie flows. There is never a dull moment and there is so much of interest going on that the movie just flies by. The special effects are damn good for a late '80's flick and I laughed hard at a lot of the gags (my favorite is a sight gag involving a telephone booth). This is Joe Dante's finest hour outside of the Gremlins movies. (8/10)

Fred Astaire was also a top notch singer. No, he didn’t have the gorgeous pipes of Crosby, but he had a natural singing voice. I’ve been told that Tin Pan Alley songwriters preferred Astaire over just about anyone else because he sang THEIR songs….he never stylized, or crooned, took unnecessary liberties with the rhythm and melody.

Dragnet: I absolutely love this movie. This is Aykroyd's finest hour. I don't know if I would have good as far as Gene would in praise (and that says more about how much praise Gene had than me.) What is interesting about Dragnet is that it sort of goes in "The Princess Bride" approach to its comedy, playing everything straight, only occasionally tipping the hat to its parody.
Adventures in Babysitting: I haven't seen that movie in almost 20 years when it would play in Disney Channel reruns, but I do recall enjoying it slightly. I may have to go back to see it again to think about Roger's criticisms of the racial issues he had with the film.
Innerspace: While I definitely disagree with Roger (and to an extent, Gene) in that opinion that Martin Short did not realize his potential in Three Amigos, I think they are also spot on with praising him for this film. It is sad that this film was not a hit when it came out, and only later did it gain an audience with VHS/DVD and TV airings.

I agree with them in DRAGNET, great
Cast, great performances all around, good scenes & no bad scenes, good moments & the chemistry between Aykroyd & Hanks is fun. Aykroyd's performance funny because he talks like a robot most of the movie, before Tom Hanks, Aykroyd originally wanted James Belushi to be his partner but unavailable. 👍🌟🌟🌟🌟

If they had Memo To The Academy specials back then, I can easily imagine Gene wasting his recommendation on Dan Aykroyd. Not that he wasn't great as Joe Friday, but this kind of performance wouldn't get an Oscar nomination in any year. Gene is the same guy who stumped for Keanu Reeves to be nominated for "Speed" and James Woods for "Vampires". That's hardcore maverick shit.

But if you have ever listened to the old Dragnet radio programs or ever seen the original television show Aykroyd gives a magnificent performance playing the original Joe Friday’s nephew. There are some funny moments in it but it’s not that good. And I’m a huge admirer of Aykroyd and Tom Hanks, Christopher Plummer, Elizabeth Ashley, etc. But the whole P.A.G.A.N plot was just stupid. And Ebert was right on the money when he criticized the music that plays over the end credits. If you can even call that crap “music.” Horrible stuff.
