As an atheist I have a deep respect for buddhism. I myself am not spiritual but I agree with a lot of things that the buddha taught. I agree that love, acceptance and positivity are the ways to happiness and the parts I don't agree with I can still respect for they are harmless and well meaning. Buddhism is a personal philosophy, so personal it encourages people to not blindly except it but to ponder it and decide if that is what they believe or not. While I am atheist, I love listening to Buddhists talk for although we may have disagreements there is always a great respect between us.

The translation of the Dhammapada is very important because translations are not equal. Some are far better than others. Here are the first two verses from a very good translation:
1. Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with an impure mind a person speaks or acts suffering follows him like the wheel that follows the foot of the ox.
2. Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with a pure mind a person speaks or acts happiness follows him like his never-departing shadow.

This translation says: "All that we are is the result of what we have thought..."
Using the words thought/thoughts instead of the word mind gives a totally different meaning. Thoughts are the products of mind, they don't create the mind. The mind creates them.

To be ''of the Buddhist Family'' you would actually have to understand that Siddhartha Gautama was only ''not-quite-right in his explanations as to how to go in search of truth... and you would then go on to illuminate those shortcomings in Gautama's attempts...
Buddhist family is the Sangha, both monastic and lay, who practice together.

I agree, the only thing I would add is that we might be careful when we make statements like "buddhism isn't a religion" because I know it is for so many. I rather not discuss such a trivial thing and let people call it whatever they want.

You are NOT your thoughts. Think about it... Let it sink in. How can you be your thoughts? Thoughts come and go. But you stay. If you were your thoughts why would you ever want to be sad? You would think about being happy, free. You cannot control your thoughts.
But you can observe them come and go like they appear on a screen. Your thoughts cannot touch you. There's a space between you and what you think you are. You can chose to not be engaged by these thoughts. Thoughts may appear and things may appear hard than they actually are. If you were your fearful thoughts you would never be free or out of fear. When you see these feelings and thoughts from a distance you understand these are powerless and often exaggerated.
Let them come and go. You are free.
Madhyamaka Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta, both are paths to achieving the non-dual state which is our true nature 🙏
All creation is not grief. Don't have pity on all creatures but have compassion.

Yes. James Allen is one of my favorites. In heavenly life he quotes dhamapada directly more than once. Heavenly life is on par with the dhamapada as a teaching to me. Close are tao te ching and kybaluon.

I thought and re thought over about commenting here now as I had already commented regarding "To whom do we owe this debt?" Speaking of karmic debt. I have come to a possible realization regarding this. I say possible but really, it is the only way this make a kind of sense at all to me. My realization is this: In any closed system there are rules which any element within the system must adhere to in order that it may be said to be a part of the system. Karma is the rules of our system. Like Newtonian Physics there are actions and, reactions that happen purely as consequence of there being rules.
Except it is more apt to say that these are like but not precisely, physical law.
This explains why enlightened beings are said to not be so harried by karma as are others. They do not act in such a way as to interact with the system and its laws. If one does not seek to obtain any particular outcome in any given situation, then that one is not acting in a way that engenders karma. No intent, no crime. So to speak.
However, it occurs to me that intent is as important as action. This is why meditation and moral behavior are so important to the one seeking enlightenment. If one would interact in a way that engenders karma if only they were able then they are guilty regardless. Not of a crime mind you. They are guilty of intent. That is action. To which there must necessarily be a reaction.

@@m1galler I must say however, upon listening to the introduction to the book, it seems to be concerned with power and control thereof. The whole "meat for men" as opposed to others supplying "milk to babes" is a power centric idea. Not something Buddhism concerns itself with.
This existence is impermanent while what we truly are is not. No use vying for control of what will be gone long before you ever will.
@@streamenterer2293 I see the direction you are approaching this from. But you will see if you have ever tried to help someone above the level they are at. They almost disgusted reject the information with a love of the imperfection. It's not so much a power move to milk for babes, meat for strong men. It is that there are different tiers of spirituality spread through society and no stepping stone can be skipped. So you can only teach the next step not the final step to a person. Milk is not an insult but the proper food for this stage. They will eat meat when the milk makes them strong enough to digest it. Not power but discernment.

Because nothing can be created or destroyed karma is a function of the adaptation of the whole. Skip the intro on all these books
They are not written at the knowledge level of the author of the information and should not be considered the same level of source. The intro is usually just some intellectual and not as high in spirit as the main text. Once you get to the main section you'll see it more as just obvious truths that take no reaching to understand. It's more of a .. ya of course.. experience. Like the dhamapada
But it lays ot out as separate observable truths that together synergize to make the whole. Reexplaing what you already knew without words. I'm only suggesting meat because of what u stayed already.

None of this used to make sense... but after realizing the truth of reality, this actually makes logical sense.
A teacher told me, "Nothing is obvious until it becomes obvious". This is also refered to as the background/foreground shift.
Budddha and Jesus came with a gift of knowledge, one must go farther and understand them, apply them, it’s literally organic food for the soul.
It is good to practice the teachings in their respective chapters called suttas, it is not just a book or story, it is a way of life, a spiritual connection to enlightenment.

It's karma... The buddha taught us that we r in continuous cycle of rebirth & all what we get both good & bad are causes of what we did in past lives.... If a person puts bad thoughts in a child it's coz that very child had done the same in their previous life to another child....
