The Story of Piper (The Only Known Case with her Rare Genetics)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 тра 2024
- Piper is a nonspeaking child with two rare genetic conditions. She has learned to communicate by humming songs that are relevant to her mood. For example, when Piper is joyful she hums, "If You're Happy and You Know It". Piper's family wants others to know that her form of communication is valid.

Just when the world seems to be slipping into madness and despair, I see two parents who are this wonderful and devoted. I needed something to make me smile today. Thanks.
❤
Me too! 😊
Couldn’t have said it better myself!!!!
Couldn’t agree more, simply beautiful in so many ways!
❤😊
Chris, you speak EVERYONE's language. You are just a treasure.
Chris is just as much an angel as the children and families he interviews. Truly gifts from God.
I agree! My wife Carrie, her mom, and I were blessed to be interviewed by Chris for a Valentines show he did about 5 years ago. Such a real and loving person!
So true!
@@nancyayotte2297god? He is his own person, which any kind of God had little to do with
@@jodawgsup I don't understand the question. I agree Chris is his own person, as well as a treasure and gift in as much as he cares to share his talent with us. Why would God want to have little to do with him?
Thank you Chris for sharing a glimpse of our family with the people on your channel, and for the time and energy you put into each video. We found encouragement early on in Piper's diagnosis by watching your interviews, and being on the opposite side of things was a great opportunity. You are a talented guitar player, and Piper enjoyed her time with to you! You were kind, patient, and flexible. Which is just what most people need.
Thank you to our friends, family, teachers, church, and medical team who have played roles in our daily lives. For supporting and encouraging us on our worst days.
Thank you to the online community who has commented or engaged with the video. Your kind words, prayers, and advice have been well received and shared along to our children. Time is a valuable thing that you can't get back, and it was a blessing to share our story with you all. We pray it encourages you on hard days, in hard places.
Thank you to our Lord Jesus for giving us a hope and a future. The Lord has been our firm foundation through the storms. We wouldn't be able to do an ounce of what we do without Him leading and guiding us every step of the way.
The humming she did in the first 10 seconds was the "are you sleeping, are you sleeping, brother John?" Nursery ryhme. She uses that song when she is tired or wants to know if others are awake in the house. Right before Chris showed up, Piper was napping. So in hindsight it makes sense that she was humming that song. She was still waking up from her nap.
Wondering if she has ever made music herself, on a toy piano, xylophone, etc.? 💕
I have a rear genetic disorder DAUGHTER too and she doesn’t walk, but I noticed that you had a swing what kind of swing is it?
@amandastrickland3303, you and your husband are such beautiful souls! From the moment you started to speak, I knew you loved Jesus. You radiate his character….you are what I like to refer to as “Jesus with skin on”. Thank you for doing life in such a way that you leave light and love with those you come into contact with!! Ya’ll are now in my prayers.
You guys are such a beautiful family and oh so loving. I'm going through some issues with my beliefs but seeing people who truly do show the true love of Jesus and being kind loving people, makes helps to remind me that those who call themselves Christians but don't show love aren't truly what its supposed to be.
Thank you for being an example of true love. You'll not know how much it means while I go through this faith crisis
She's definitely born with a natural talent for music. She not only perfectly keeps in time with the beat, but she also vocally changes keys along with the guitar. I'm glad her parents recognized this talent early and are using it in meaningful ways to connect with Piper.
Her name, Piper, is totally fitting for someone who is musically inclined. Lol 😊
seconding this!
I didn't even realize that!!! God works in beautiful and often mysterious ways!!! He knows what He's doing before we ever do!!!
@@daniellewallace1996 Right? I love this little girl. She's amazing! 🙂

As a former music therapist, this video is very powerful. Thank you for showing the power of music to connect with people.
I was just thinking she would probably really benefit from music therapy.
Ya know, I was waiting for this comment. I’m musically inclined in terms of instruments, theory, and was even the drum major (conductor) of my high school’s large competitive field marching band-but my dad discouraged me from majoring in music and psychology when I expressed that music therapy was my target career. No joke. It doesn’t really matter considering I ended up becoming a mom twice over while pursuing a degree and I chose to prioritize my daughters over my psych major, but I really needed to see someone comment on music therapy. That was my very first thought and I was so thoroughly intrigued and watched the entire video in full. You’re an inspiration who is very far out of reach, but I’m soooo grateful 12 years later just to see that I wasn’t silly for wanting to double major for music therapy. Although my goal is sooo far out of reach by now, I needed justification in knowing that music therapists really ARE out there and really do feel fulfilled the way I would have! I hope you are happily onto the next stage in your life and that the lives you touched fulfilled you the way your single comment fulfilled me-and I’m glad someone else likely got goosebumps for the same reason I did when this video touched me!
Back around 1970 when my grandparents were in a nursing home, my sister, who could play by ear, would play songs that generation would know like Bye Bye Blackbird. Soon she would have many happy residents around her.
I am a cellist who wants to become a music therapist... Helping people through music, is there something more beautiful?
@@xTriSarahTopzThere are a lot of programs that allow adults who work to do online classes to earn their degrees:) I don't know what your situation is, but I know it's never too late! :-) whatever you do, I hope that you are happy, and I hope you know that there is time. :)
connecting music BPM to heart BPM to calm her is an EXTRAORDINARY idea. this shows the absolute love and connection that parents and guardians can have with children. understanding a child goes far beyond what we THINK is human interaction
That was absolutely fantastic
That works, when I'm anxious, loud and fast music helps
I did the same thing with my highly sensitive cat. Meet someone where they are and guide them to where you know that they need to be. The recipient has to lock in though.
The way she stared into the guitar as he played was an amazing moment. No words spoken, just vibes.
There is a young man with disabilities (mental age of four) who supports himself playing jazz piano. Someone has to lead him to the piano and help him get up there, but after that he is amazing. When Piper was looking at the guitar, I was wondering if they should hand it to her.
@@kerrynight3271 I agree, i believe if they gave her an instrument she would teach herself to play eventually.

I can’t express enough how blown away I am with Miliana. The patience and compassion she has at her age I almost can’t wrap my head around. What a special person she is and she’s really made my day. Wow. That’s some amazing parenting too.
Hope she get the attention as young kid as she deserved..though it's challenging.
The look she gave to Chris was just adorable, she kept eye contact for so long. Great communication.
She has amazing rhythm and knows her songs brilliantly. A real talent!
That rhythm got me!
@@EFab1yes she never missed a beat. I wonder if she could hold a tambourine as it would be perfect for her as she can lift her hands so she could hit on it.
Piper has better rhythm than I do!
He's such an awesome guy! I love his energy with the kids he meets. He's such a loving guy. Definitely a special person.
"We have to have the bad days for the good days" What a wise, kind, and empathic kid. The way Piper carefully watches Chris play is so amazing to see. This family is so lovely, a younger sister with an old soul and an older sister with a musical soul. Both such wonderful little girls.
The look Piper gives when she gets revved up by the music gives me life
As both a music teacher and special education teacher, I think this kiddo is absolutely brilliant!
Да в этом ребёнке сидит огромная музыкальная энергия, которая рвётся наружу и никак вырваться не может. Как жаль, что хлопки рук это пока единственный инструмент.
She hums in tune!
Piper has fantasitic rhythm!
And i really love the creative "family portrait" they have for all the foster kids that come into their lives
I was genuinely impressed by her rhythm!
What an amazing family. God bless these folk for making all those kids' lives happier and filled with love.
The look on Piper's face when you were playing the guitar was priceless! MUSIC is Piper's language... And Milliana saying, "I would calm down and I would think about the happy stuff not the mean stuff." Wow, so much maturity for a 6 year old child.
She was taught by loving parents. 😊
Oui des parent aime il en faut beaucoups
"we have to have bad days so we can have good days" wow! Milliana floored me with that statement. How does a 6 year old become this emotionally mature?
Milliana is so grown up and verbal when it comes to Piper! What a sweetie!! Piper's humming is definitely communicative and as a special educator of infants and toddlers , music and singing is a big part of the learning process. You see the light in Piper despite her disabilities. You see the joy in the family too, and the fact that they foster special needs children is a blessing that that was given to them because of Piper. She definitely has a purpose in the world!! Life for her has its difficulties, but she is pursuing it despite them. Keep humming sweet girl!!
What a special way to connect. Beautiful family and beautiful girl. I love how she told Chris what pace she wants a song by tapping the guitar. She sure knows how to connect.
Her mother looks like jen anisteian
I’m glad UA-cam allows comments again on this channel, it is the most powerful, positive and uplifting channel and community on UA-cam.
what a beautiful name for a child who communicates with music
I really appreciate whenever your interviewees talk openly about hitting/hair pulling/other physical violence. It's an aspect of certain disabilities that's treated as pretty taboo, so I think it's valuable to discuss it on such a large platform.
What did they say her condition was ?

Look how she smiles when Chris kept saying Hey. It was touching
What a proud Daddy, he can’t stop looking at her with so much love… bless xo
You can really see that brain working in her face when she locks into the beat. How lucky she is that she has this way of communicating with her family.
chris is probably the most pure person ive seen, like actually
I cannot imagine the amount of love and care needed for a child with such genetic disorders, but compounded with the desire and responsibility to give her sister everything she needs and deserves and maintain a functioning family unit seems almost impossible. My only child is a healthy 41-year-old man with a family of his own; I never take that good grace for granted. I hold a special place in my heart with love and respect for all of you.
Such a lovely comment ❤
can we just appreciate the love of these parents? the way the mom looks so prideful of her every movement, the way dad knows every inch of her soul & how to calm it , what a lucky little girl, what lucky parents too to have this kind of bond ❤️😊
Once I understood Pipers music connection I understood how connected and intelligent she is. “Never judge a book by its cover.”
Millania is a wonderful, helpful sister. Good job Mom and Dad!!
It’s so cute how she scrubs her hands together between claps when Chris plays. What a beautiful child!
Just a quick story: I worked at Children's Hospital for many years, and we had a child who was a "frequent flyer", (a child who had been a patient on our unit many times) He had a deficit disorder, and was mentally deficient, but he communicated with everyone through music! His favorite song was "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog", and no matter what his mood was, as soon as he heard that song, he would stop what he was doing and immediately start clapping in time and humming with the music. I always felt like that just seemed to be a special song for a lot of special needs children. Kind of a nice memory for me. thank you for sharing yourself with these children and their families, and then sharing your videos with us! Much love... 👍🥰
Anyone would be absolutely privileged to have Piper and Milliana as children or siblings.
It was so touching when Piper was humming "If You're Happy and You Know It" when her sister was sitting next to her. Such a tender yet clear expression of love. It brought me to tears.
She listens so tentatively to the music and you can really tell she understand the rhythms and tries to copy as well which is great :) I’ve noticed people with disabilities tend to have a deeper appreciation for music. When I was younger and nonverbal I used music to help myself
By far, the COOLEST episode on this channel! Thank you to her amazing family for sharing Piper with us!! The little sister is an absolute star too! 🎉
Dang that little sister is a doll-baby! What a gem is she!
if your videos have taught me ANYTHING over the years is to NEVER, EVER underestimate someone's ability and longing for connection. i'm serious. i'll be forever grateful for that lesson. and i'm eager to continue learning.
Same. I'm ashamed to admit it but I used to wonder "how do children who can speak communicate aren't they so sad" I never thought badly of them but thought they must be sad.
Chris has shown me that there's so many ways to communicate and that they're anything but sad or "trapped" like the media will make you think.
Its changing now but I grew up when autistic children who couldn't speak were described as "trapped in their own world" thankfully through both UA-cam and meeting non verbal autistic children (my best friend from childhood has a non verbal son) I've learned that is not true at all.
This takes me back 40yrs to when my daughter was just like this. She was non verbal but music would get her attention every time. When I wanted to talk to her I would sing it otherwise she would pay no attention.
Now she can speak & interacts with people, but music is still important to her.
❤
Good try she's the only one with this!! Just couldn't resist making it about you! So sad
@@user-mj5rf1is5c if you read my comment I never said my daughter had the same condition, just that she was non verbal & only responded to music. My daughter has a rare genetic condition called Tuberous Sclerosis (intellectual disability, epilepsy, brain tumours, renal tumours etc etc). My daughter is now 42yrs old. I just thought the parents might like to know of another person similar to their daughter who can now speak & interact with people.
@@user-mj5rf1is5c I never said my daughter had the same condition just that she was non verbal & only responded to music. She has a different rare genetic condition called Tuberous Sclerosis (intellectual disability, epilepsy, brain, kidney & lung tumours etc etc).
Watching Piper interact with her family & Chris brought back so many memories of my daughter at that age. I commented because I thought Piper’s parents might like hearing that my daughter was very similar to Piper at that age but she can now speak & interacts with her friends at the art program she attends.
@@user-mj5rf1is5cjesus christ all they said was their daughter was nonverbal they never said the condition in the original comment. and if you didnt notice the channel is for families with disabled kids, so actually their comment was in the perfect place. they responded with more kindness than they could’ve given jsyk. enjoy your day
This is a very powerful message to everybody. Just because she isn't doing it your way doesn't mean she cannot do it and keep on developing her communication. Thank you to the whole family, Chris & his wife. ❤
What a unique child Piper is. She is SO wonderful 🥹
And Milliana is an angel. I cried when she said "I'm happy for her" 😭❤
I promise Chris speaks to everyone's consciousness! I've never seen him not able to connect with a kiddo-and their parents/care givers. What a blessed talent ❤
She absolutely is engrossed and emotionally invested in music 🎉
When she sits up and tilts her head :( I just lost it in tears. So beautiful!
This one is very special. You used her language to reach her and it is an absolutely beautiful thing to see thank you so much.
The way she lit up when you were playing was magical !
This one made me cry. Hearing about the kids in the hospital with no one visiting, OMG I wanna hold all them 😢
Let this comment be your beginning! Find ways to volunteer to enrich the lives of others as well as yourself!
Children's hospitals need volunteers to just hang out and play with the children who are being treated.
Me too! I actually got this immediate sadness in my heart
my absolute favorite thing about this channel is that the interviews dont focus on their diagnosis, but on them as people. you try to really get to know them and become their friend and make sure that you capture who they are so we can know them too. the way you treat everyone with such respect and genuine desire for connection is heartwarming.
like..... im not aure exactly how to explain it. i know it should be a given that interviews treat the interviewees with respect and stuff, but like.. most others have a vibe of like, we’re here to see something unusual that we dont know about and focus on that aspect of this person. and like, thats not necessarily bad or inherently disrespectful depending on how its handled, it can be good to learn about how others live differently than you. but your interviews are different, much warmer and much more focused on learning who they are
My girl is 14 and so much like your girl. She has SCN2A related Autism and seizure disorders. Music is a language! ❤
Great parenting. You can tell by how patient and empathetic Milliana is.
I wonder if Piper has a keyboard, she could make her own music.
I appreciate that this family fosters. We need more wonderful parents like these two! 💕💞
And could she use notes to make language. Similar to sign language but tonal
what a smart girl- one of the most unique ways i’ve seen people communicate in a while. it’s truly beautiful. what a great supportive family to help her as well!
To watch this child connect with you was amazing i saw it several times in this video. You can just see it in her eyes, lights up her face. You are a remarkable young man. Just when i start to lose my faith in humanity, I see one of your videos and am reminded that there are still good people out there. thank you for how much you do for others, thank you for your ability to really connect with others, and thank you so much for just being you
I'm watching the part where the Piper ans the dad are taping in tempo, and I really appreciated what that small calming gesture meant in that instance. It made me realize that sometimes, to be there for someone is just to be besides them, in sync with them and what they are feeling. No words are needed. Just being in sync with one another. And considering that a lot of parents, especially fathers, have difficulty doing that with their kids, It really moved me. Piper has obviously good caring parents and a great sister. They are all lucky to have each other. - just finished the whole video... Parents, you make me see thet there are good, loving people out there. Thank you for reminding me of that.
She literally doesn’t miss a beat. What a beautiful kid❤
They named this kiddo correctly, alright! I love how intense Piper's expressions get and how much her eyes light up when the music is played; you can just almost see her brain firing off all the signals. I also thought the example of lowering her heartbeat by having her clap at a slowing tempo was brilliant. It is quite clear that she's in the right family.
This is so cool. I work at a medical daycare, and several of the kids (especially the babies) really respond to singing. I love to sing, so it’s fun for me. I’ve also learned which kids enjoy songs with gestures more (like the Itsy Bitsy Spider). Some of the kids have autism, some have neurological disorders, some have genetic disorders. It’s great to see how different kids respond.
Words escape me to describe the beautiful experience this video captures. Breathtaking... You can see through her facial expressions and eyes....everything within her lights up, makes sense, and falls into place....once the music starts. The way she claps her hands to the beat....between claps she seems to feel the tempo, the way she "scrunches and scrubs" her hands between claps. That's her "feeling" the beat. One of the best videos, and best experiences I've ever had on youtube. Thank you to everyone who made this video and experience possible.
What a creative and fun way to connect with her. 💜
Ya gotta love when Chris breaks out the guitar 🎸
These parents are -- wow. :) and her sister is so attentive!! Great job Mom and Dad..
Just beautiful.
I have no words to describe what love this channel brings to the world.
It brings such an incredible message but most importantly shows the lives of the most INCREDIBLE people and the beautiful humans who raise them and teach them. All children deserve to be showered with the support and love these parents give. This is how children blossom and grow no matter if they have a disability or not. Children grow when given love and when given the opportunity to learn and shine.
Also, Chris, thank you and your beautiful partner for all you both do. It makes the hearts of so many smile and more open in general. You are both so genuine and so wonderful. What you do for this community is just amazing.

Notice the difference in her hand movements in different music patterns. It's like she's both shaping the notes and feeling the vibrations. Sculpting hands. Watch her hands and body language with different sounds.

Piper seems like an amazing child, she truly is a nice individual.
I worked with autistic adults , and Piper is way more switched on than you think, the beat to the guitar she knew within 8 bars. But its her eyes that she communicates along with the music, one very intelligent girl
Aw...How beautiful Piper is! She definitely has a musical ear and a very rhythmic heart. I imagine that music therapy works very well for her. I am so happy for her that she has parents and sister who love and accept her as she is. I am a special needs caregiver. There is a boy I also connected with through songs. He is not able to vocalize or clap, but he moves or sways differently depending on the song. As soon as he sees me, he shakes my hand and makes a peculiar noise asking me to sing. I sing for him 90% of the time. If I stop, he shakes my hand quite hard and screams, to indicate that I should continue singing, he doesn't give me any rest ha ha. He has his favorite songs and it is a relief to the heart when some songs help him calm down in certain challenging times. I've been with him for more than 7 years, so even if I'm at home, at school or anywhere, I find myself singing 😁 It's contagious.
