Wolves and domestic dogs share a common ancestry, and both belong to the species Canis lupus. However, there are key differences between them, including physical attributes and behaviours, that contribute to the perception that wolves are stronger than most domestic dog breeds, please keep in mind the word most not all. Wolves are wild animals that have evolved over thousands of years to survive and thrive in the natural environment. Their physical characteristics, such as powerful jaws, sharp teeth, strong muscles, and endurance, have developed through natural selection to help them hunt, capture prey, and compete for survival in the wild. Wolves have retained many of their wild instincts, including hunting and pack behaviour. Domestic dogs, through selective breeding, have been modified for various purposes, such as herding, guarding, or companionship, which has sometimes led to a reduction in certain wild traits. Wolves are known for their endurance and stamina, allowing them to cover long distances during hunts. This stamina is essential for pursuing prey until it is exhausted. Wolves have powerful jaws with strong teeth designed for tearing and crushing bones. Their dental structure is adapted for a carnivorous diet and efficient consumption of prey. Domestic dogs, depending on the breed, may have variations in dental structure based on their historical roles and dietary habits.
For example Livestock guardian dogs are specifically bred and trained to protect livestock from predators, including wolves and they are large and very powerful. There are several reasons why wolves don't want to confront livestock guardian dogs 1 on 1. Livestock guardian dogs are often larger and more robust than the average domestic dog.
Their size and physical presence can be intimidating to wolves. Additionally, many LGDs have a strong, muscular build and a confident posture, which can deter potential threats. Wolves may learn from experience. If they encounter resistance from livestock guardian dogs and face challenges in predating on a flock protected by these dogs, they may become wary and choose easier prey elsewhere. LGDs are bred with strong protective instincts. They are raised alongside livestock and develop a strong bond with them. When a predator, such as a wolf, approaches the flock, the LGD perceives it as a threat and will instinctively take action to protect the livestock. This includes barking loudly, growling, and displaying aggressive behaviour.

I have a 2 year old Alabai, called Emir. Not even full grown, hes robust but not fat, as with these breeds you have to avoid over feeding. He weighs 80 kg, and 90cm high at his shoulders. I mean, ppl have no idea what a fully developed strong Alabai male looks like and what he is capable of. Ppl saying a wolf can take them down in a 1v1 never seen a big dog other than a great dane, lol, and know nothing about wolves. These dogs easily break your arms by biting it, or 3-4 of them kills a normal brown bear, as it happened before in mu region, Transylvania.
Even the dogo argentino beats the Alabai. The Alabai often have the upper hand for about 15 min. Then he is done and won't fight no more

There is a reason they are called LGD because they are big, strong and ferocious. Predators should not mess with them. LGDs mean business when protecting livestocks and intruders threatening the livestocks can be screwed. LGDs are relentless and can finish you off.
Wouldn't Lions, Hyenas, Wild Dogs, and Nile Crocodiles be too much if they were in Central Africa in farms or escorting livestock in long-distance migrations?
I studied many many dog versus wolf /bear encounters, and only a few dog breeds can kill a wolf or chase away a bear and these are: 1-Turkish Kangal , 2-Caucasian Shepherd , 3-Tibetan Mastiff .
And Alabai

And to the one person who said alabai, i hope you dont mean the soviet loose jowl hybrid from the red star kennel cause that is not a true livestock guardian just like the Caucasian ovcharka but both hail as hybrids from the red star kennel. There are different variations of central asian shepherd and soviet hybrid alabai are not one but aboriginal Turkmen alabai, afghan kuchi and afghan gadi are true central asian shepherds and if anything a Himalayan bankhar dog is more dominate and more braver than a tibet mastiff. In Dagestan they have combat tournaments called league of champions and it is for battle experience, courage testing and breeding rights and not one hybrid ovcharka or alabai, nor any kangal or Tibetan mastiff has or ever come close to beating a Dagestan Caucasian volkodav. Volkodav from the north caucuses are more formidable to wild animals than the youtube hero breeds
Also depends on the type of wolf. Dogs are no match to the North Canadian or Alaskan ones, huge animals. It also depends on an individual dog and wolf. Dogs of the same breed are different in terms of endurance and stamina...just like people.

To be honest any wolf that tries to prey on any predator for food risks an early death. Even if they win they will sustain at least minor injuries which could lead to complications.
But a wolf that attacks domesticated animals is begging for the Darwin award. Sure they might more than likely get a meal but they not only risk injury by combat, they also risk getting themselves deceased from gunfire from humans.
Or risk having their entire species go extinct by humans. Just ask the Thylacines.

Coyotes hunt livestock too. Some coyotes packs are much larger than any wolf pack.

Wolves are being underrated because of this dogs and the thing that I want you to know is all these wolves are beta or lower level in their pack. Their purpose in the pack is just to search for food and check for land territory to claim for their pack. That's why they always caught by the livestock guardian dogs and as they are the weakest individuals from their pack they can't even face these dogs. That's why you have never seen an alpha wolf or the leader fighting with dogs. he has nothing to do in the village. But if an alpha wolf which is twice stronger and heavier than the weakest wolves engaged to a combat with a dog, he will consume the dog. So don't be fooled by thinking that wolves are weak because of their spies or beta and omega wolves. It is just like humans for example: you win a fight against a skinny guy and win can you say that all humans are weak?

People forget that people bred dogs to work and defend. The ones that didn’t survive were not bred. Another thing people don’t know is some dogs are smart tough fighters just like their cousins the wolves. It just depends on the dog or wolf. Dogs that still live to do what it’s bred for will always have the drive to defend and die trying. Wolves in packs eat dogs by tag team but even then a tough strong dog will go for the leader and still survive. Remember what these breeds were bred for? And all the hundreds of years of doing it you best believe that they can live up to their purpose. A dog that lives in an apartment isn’t going to beat any wolve or even a coyote. It depends on the wolf or dog. I strongly believe dogs from the Roman era defeated many wild wolves they were made for war.

LGDs have been bred for thousands of years for one purpose to guard livestock! They are not house dogs. If a rancher or farmer have a herd of what ever then if they are smart they also have more than 1 LGD. A lot of the replys I've read sound like city folks that don't really understand what a true LGD is or coyote or wolf is for that matter.

'Dogs' cannot be generalized, as a poodle or chihuahua is a snack for a wolf or even a coyote, whereas a pitbull, bulldog, or some of the even more powerful breeds are not to be trifled with.

We’ll never know because the wolf would run away being too smart to risk injury or death in that situation. And my Pyr would let him get away also being too smart to risk injury when the threat is removed. A Kangal on the other hand, that’s a different story the Kangal might not let the wolf run away.

Depends on the bloodline, it may have been a pit but it may have been breed as a pet. The the last dog in this video probably came from a long line of guard dogs.

you need to do your research. a wolf from turker where kangals originate would pose a threat to one but would sometimes lose. an american wolf tho where they can grow to be up to +200lbs wolf utterly destroy a kangal. with a bite force of up to 1200 and born hunting wolves are smarter more agile stronger faster and know way more about survival. most of the time a wolf will flee from a dog because a wolf cant risk an injury. risking an injury would disable it from hunting.
