    I set up the hose as you did and turned the motor on and let it run for about 20-30 seconds. It took about that long for everything to come out, and it was BLACK. I did lock to lock during the 20 or 30 seconds, but had the car jacked up to take the weight off the wheels. I then reconnected and then filled back up. I was worried about the pump running dry, but the shop manual I read said it was no big deal for a short period of time. Once I refilled it the system took about 30 seconds to a minute to purge out all air. I then drove around for a week and the did the whole thing over again. After the second flush the fluid stayed nice and clean. I used off-brand Honda-OK power steering fluid. That was 4 years ago, and the pump has been fine.

      unclematt3 nice work, thanks for the update on the off brand ps fluids. We’ve always recommend oem, but to each their own as long as it works.

    I know you might disagree, but always use Honda genuine fluids, they only cost a few dollars more than regular brands.

      I agree with you, this fluid is compatible with Honda, and we’ve used this fluid in the past before without any issues.

      Yeah a lot of people stupidly believe that they can throw any kind of fluid in any kind of car, but they don't realize that engineers don't just throw these systems together and then pick a type of fluid out of a hat and pour it in. They make certain specifications for a reason. If your car says to use regular gas, then you use regular gas.. if it says use high octane supreme, then use it! If it says to use only BMW blue coolant, then for the love of God, and the poor sucker you'll eventually sell your car to, please use only BMW blue coolant. I had an e46 that had to have the WHOLE cooling system replaced, which is technically regular maintenance on those cars anyways, but the whole cooling system is made out of plastic/rubber and regular coolant eats it up.. BMW blue coolant is formulated specifically for plastics.

      we got it off of a rebuilt transmission where they plug the lines. If you don't have it, you can use a 3/8 hose and plug it up with a socket closed end or a tool?

    • @aLaCartePizza

      I would do it before. That way any old fluid doesn't get into the new. Then just bleed it.

    How can you tell the difference between the return line and the feed line?

    • @NutzAboutBolts
      @NutzAboutBolts  10 років тому +1

      jaymeez return line (inlet) is the small hose or the one one going to the top of the powersteering reservoir. The feed line (outlet) is the big hose or the one that is at the bottom of the powersteering reservoir.

      NutzAboutBolts Thanks man, btw I have a 01' Odyssey and I just cleared out the egr code by cleaning out the carbon build up, my issue now is I have a idle problem. While taking the throttle body off I took off the Coolant hose going into the iac, so I believe the issue is just the coolant not being in the iac anymore but the radiator is full. Should I simply run the motor until it heats up so the Coolant can flow to the iac and hopefully fix the idle problem? It's reving up to 2500 then back down to 1200 and it repeats.

    You mention hearing the air in the system at the end...is that a temporary side effect and will that just work itself out? You don't seem concerned, so I assume it's a minor thing, but this will be the first time I do this.

    • @NutzAboutBolts
      @NutzAboutBolts  10 років тому

      Angie Guerra yeah, eventually the air will bleed itself out when you turn the steering wheel all the way left and all the way right.

    Thanks for the video! I need to replace my reservoir on a 2000 Accord (it's leaking) so I'm thinking I should flush the system while I'm at it.
    I want to make sure I have the right tools. What type of hose did you use to connect to the return and where would I find one? I saw you mention 5/8" in one reply but another you say to get a 3/8" hose and plug, but you might have been talking about two different things.
    Also what is it that you plugged exactly, did you plug the reservoir where the hose would connect to it?
    Thanks in advance!

    ok so in my recently purchased 99 accord 2.3 lx I've changed all clamps, the o-ring and even changed the fluid to make sure it had Honda power steering fluid and I'm still getting the whining noise, air/foaming in the reservoir. certainly not as bad as when I got the car but any ideas?

      I would go with that before thinking of the rack and pinion since your fluid is still foaming up since there's air in the system.

      Alex Fouts yes. I drained the fluid, took off the reservoir and cleaned it with kerosene because it had so much built-up sediment over the screen inside that i couldn’t even see through it. couldn’t believe i missed it. car hasn’t made a peep since.
