Monkey-tailed skinks are so cool. If they weren't often so darn grumpy, they would be so amazing!
Those things sure do skink though.
do darn, I like it
I like the patterns
Skinkin’ Rad!
As much as I loved your video on them, would you agree that Snake Discovery also requires some Emerald Tree Skinks next? :P
I really don't know why UA-cam recommended me your channel, but I think I'm here to stay. You seem very charming, natural and knowledgeable and the reptiles and other kinds of animals are just stunning and interesting.
Edit 1: And I guess I found one of the friendliest communities on UA-cam, thank you for the nice words!
Edit 2: There's no chance I could get a reptile as a pet for different personal reasons, but I watched a couple of their videos already, which are really entertaining and educational and that's partly why I decided to stay here.
That is the best choice you'll ever make.
Welcome to one of the best channels on youtube! You'll definitely enjoy your stay!
The same happened to me at the beginning of COVID and I haven’t missed a video since then
emilys channel has singlehandedly changed my view on reptiles and im so glad i decided to watch her videos
welcome to the probably biggest group of non reptile keepers who are fascinated by a reptile chanel on the whole world :)
If you make the pothos trail and grow upwards, it will grow much faster and the leaves can get huge! Just a suggestion ☺️
And if you can't, just have a bunch of Pothos that you rotate 😹😹😹
Maybe you can grow a large climbing pothos as a decor plant in the zoo and use it to harvest leaves for them to munch on.
truth. I have several friends who got a pathos at the beginning of lockdown and have since had their offices or living rooms completely overtaken!
This! I once had a plant for 11 years that had two 10+ feet trails and three more just under before it died. (Someone murdered it on me)
@@krat5576 the problem with that is kids like to pick leaves of of plants. My dad has worked at a children's museum for ten years and they can't have live plants in grabbing range because the little buggers are determined poison themselves. His moto is "There is no such thing as kid proofing something. With enough time, kids can destroy anything."
Hey Emily, the pothos reminded me that you have a green house. Y'all could start growing a monster pothos and supply all the plants for terrariums. Mini orchids. Aquatic plants for aquascaping. Different kinds of moss.
Ooooohhh, the possibilities!
I think they said its in the works but got delayed because they had an issue with the roof- the new one they just bought! And had to rip it out and start over. The greenhouse is on hold until the unexpected construction is dealt with
I thought they demo'd the green house while they were renovating the building.
@@Black-Swan-007 nope
Yeah once they can get over the unexpected renovations that would be an awesome idea for the business.
I love how chill the skink is about Emily moving it tail around. I also love that when she let go it just stayed in that position
And the one on her head
I'd be interested in seeing a nocturnal live stream of them, similar to what you do with Rex! It'd be a cool way to actually see them being active!
Yes I second this!
They did talk about doing live streams with animals other than Rex. They got 5 extra cameras when they got the one in Rex's enclosure.
Yea when Rex goes to bed for the night the skinks come out to play lol
"Nocturnal usually have elips eyes" yea, tell that to me and the other night owl here.
Skinks are so adorable, their faces are so funny looking.
Lol
They are like chunkier Australia Blue Tongues
@@grundi18 the bois who blep
Skinks and Geckos are my favorite reptile families by far, and that is most definitely directly correlated to their amount of derpiness.
@@CommanderWiggins don’t forget legless lizards
Can we give Charles some applause this mans is funny but even though we’ve never seen him i can tell he’s caring.
Just an idea with the plant!
You could have a mesh type box (could make it natural looking) around the plant, with leaves sticking out. They can munch until they reach the mesh, then this gives the plant some time to recover and grow more shoots for your skinks ❤️
I remember hearing that my grandmother had done something like that for a catnip plant in a house with cats, who always ate the catnip down to the mesh.
Skinks are what made me love reptiles. I was holding a beardie at a pet fair and the lady who owned the reptiles asked if I wanted a skink in my hood, she said he’d love it because of how fluffy the inside was. Not sure why, but younger me became OBSESSED after that.
39 year old me just became obsessed just hearing about this. 🤩
Why would they like the fluffiness?
@@juliusroman8616 Warm and comfortable
Something that would be really cool, would be an event where the zoo is opened at night. So the visitors could see all the nocturnal animals :)
It doesn't have to be regularly but like ones every couple of months
Edit: the lights would be turned off of course, but you could use blacklight or just weak flashlights! :)
Great idea!
I wonder if the lights being on would upaet them though. Maybe a blacklight event?
Definitely a great idea for Halloween or full moon nights….maybe if there’s ever a meteor shower nearby.
Oh yeah something like that or like a dark 'tunnel' section with low led lighting so it's kind of like moonlight so you can see nocturnals being active.
night at the zoo
Emily! Pothos are super easy to propagate! Buy one and you can make a hundred lol just cut off a segment of the stem with a couple of leaves on it and put the cut end in water! You should see roots growing from it in the next few weeks.
And in my experience, ones grown in water tend to grow much quicker too! (ESPECIALLY if said water is a fishtank - water's constantly fresh and full of nutrients from the fish food and poop!) She does have plenty of aquatic tanks so I think it'd be a good way to have an endless pothos supply - just root for a week or two and stick em in the tank! (Leaves above water though of course ;P )
Don't know if he'll see this but I wanted to send lot's of love to Charles, the Editor. I really enjoy his editing style
Charles did a great job editing the video. I love the addition of word definitions for words that we typically don’t hear as often. I know Emily tends to explain those words as well in the videos but it’s nice to be able to read this too. I’m more of a visual learner so being able to read the definition to visually comprehend the meaning.
head skink is my fave! i kept watching it going blep as emily talked. so cuuute! thank you for another great video!
PLEASE WE NEED A DEFORMED SNAPPING TURTLE UPDATE
Yes, I almost forgot about him
Last video I saw she mentioned quasi he was still hanging in there in his at home tank
I love Charles’ edits! Also the skink on Emily’s head is so cute
Here in New Zealand we used to have the largest skink ever, it was huge, but sadly it’s extinct now. We have lots of little skinks though!
Edit: sorry, it was a gecko. I remembered it wrong.
What is the name of the skink? 👀
@@aofirelily6599 Sorry, sorry, it was a gecko. 🤭 Wrong species!
@@aofirelily6599 I think it was called either a kawakawuea,or a delcourts giant gecko.
As for the largest skink, as far as I know there was a large species of skink from Mauritius that went extinct in the 1600-1700s along with other Mascarene island fauna like pigeons (the dodo, Rodriguez solitaire and the Mauritius and Rodriguez blue pigeons),parrots (Mauritius broad billed parrot, Rodriguez parrot, Mascarene grey parakeet),other birds like the Reunion white ibis and Mauritius red rail and reptiles like the archipelagos five species of giant tortoises and the Rodriguez giant day gecko to name a few.
I’ve been a long time watcher, and I went on a rewatch binge because as much as I miss having snakes I know my mental health isn’t where it would need to be in order to properly care for them. Thank you so much for showing off and talking about so many beautiful animals
That’s such a tough place to be! Sending virtual positive thoughts to you for improved mental health and maybe future snake buddies!
I hope your mental health improves. It can be hard. Take care of yourself, make sure you're getting good treatment. 🤗
I am studying biology, and monkey tailed skinks and their habitats are definetley on my list of possible BSc project!! This is awesome guys!
Hi guys, I love your channel and have become obsessed with anything reptile (mostly snakes) over the holidays because of this channel. I think it would be really cool if you guys did a “day in the life” video to see what your busy busy days look like. From feeding animals to talking to customers, I think we would all enjoy it 😊 ❤️ love you guys
What a fun idea...a series if 7,as I suspect something different would be going on each day!
@@SHENworks oo yeah a 7 part series would be cool
I don't know how many nocturnal species you have in your zoo. But maybe you could do special night events (like once every month or two) so that visitors could see those species...?
Watching Emily do the entire video with a skink on her head was life! 😁
Watching your videos always brightens my day with your positivity, educational vids and high regard of animal welfare. Keep being awesome
DUDE! are we the same person or what?
i see your comments on every video i watch!🤣🤣
I know in the Netherlands they sell plant pots you can stack. Every pot has 3 places (i believe) for plants. So if you stack some of those pots you have multiple plants so maybe that could be an alternative for one big one. But of course the question is how to match those pots with the enclosure :)
Several years back my parents sold their house and they had a pothos plant that was so huge it could circle the house a couple times when stretched out. It probably would have been perfect for y'all.
I've never heard of a monkey tailed skink until now. You learn something new AND cool everyday!
The entire southern hemisphere animals are a hot take on nature. It's like we were the experiments here, northern hemisphere is a full roster of nerfed creatures.
@@grundi18 Oh
I always love these types of videos! I love learning about new animals! ❤
I always look forward to all of your videos. I just find it so interesting learning new things about reptiles.
A blue tongue skink would still be my first choice but these would definitely be a very close second.
I've also wondered for a while as to why you didn't have any pet African land snails (Lissachatina fulica) as I thought they would be right up your alley but I recently discovered that they're actually illegal to own in the US. Such a shame as I know you'd offer some great advice on them.
It's because they're super invasive and destructive
@@Slateproc We used to have/still have them invasive in Florida and they literally eat paint and building stucco lol
I have a Blue Tongue and can say she is the chillest cutest girl
@@Slateproc Thank you for that. I didn't really do much research as to why they're illegal. I hadn't realised that they were found in the wild in the states. They certainly explains it though. Especially given how destructive they are to plants and crops.
@@grundi18 they were part of my studies in (animal) collage and there was something about them that I really loved. Such amazing animals.
Buy a bunch of pothos and repot them together. You can get a rectangular type of pot, and add grow lights(or adjust what you have to improve growth) if you don't have have for their enclosures
Just a suggestion
It would be nice if Charles left the text on the screen for a little bit longer. I read relatively fast and have a hard time reading all the text that flashes on the screen without pausing the video.
Thanks!
Seconding this. I had a really hard time with this one.
Me too! The editing is amazing! And very professional!but sometimes I think it's a bit too busy, I'd rather have a funny side note more and longer than 10 cuts from Emily to close up Emily, it is a bit distracting.... Then again Emily's side notes also always were distracting and I didn't hear the information she was trying to delay.... And had to rewatch it XD but it is part of the charm that made me stay for over 3 years now.... I think 🤔
Loving the plants in front of the mural!! Makes it look even more amazing
Emily!! If you want a super-long pothos you should start growing stems of them in your fishtanks!! In my experience they grow SUPER quick if they're grown in a tank -- like, UNMANAGEABLY quick. I plopped a single stem in mine and within six months it had taken over the entire rim of the 75-gal tank WITH it dangling down everywhere, even after me snipping it in half about a dozen times to try and keep it under control! (Which admittedly didn't help the overgrowth lol, more stems just kept growing back quicker and fuller to compensate for what I took off XD)
Just be sure to keep the leaves out of the water so the aquarium critters don't get nippy with them.
Thank you for another very informative video on another animal i knew nothing about.
I find your content so interesting. Not just the animal of the day but the personalities of Ed and Emily. Just real smart people talking about really interesting things.
I love how calm she is as one climbs up her head
Love your correlation between koalas 🐨 & the monkey tailed skink...especially about eating the parents poop (even though you didn't state this fact) for bacterial flora.
Have you thought of putting all your nocturnal reptiles together in a separate area of your business & 1 time/day a week being open, a few hours beyond regular business hours, at night for nocturnal viewing? Just a thought 🤔
Wanted to write the same about koala poop :D
She does say that she doesn't know of another reptile, so maybe she knows about that
The skink on your head is so cute! Its like plop this is where I live and Charles editing is great! I love how he left your little bloopers in!
I really love your videos, and the new editing is fantastic!
I hope it's alright to give constructive criticism though but I think the zoom ins are a biiiiit too excessive on this one.
I hope you and your editor dont take it the wrong way though, you guys are hitting it out of the park with all the additional info and tiny details in the "new style"! Here's to seeing more from you!
You should start your own big Pothos! Its incredibly easy to do and they grow fast with decent light!
Just take a Golden Pothos and put it in a pot and use a stake for it to climb on, repot into bigger pots often and keep up with vines up the stake and within a few months you'll get the plant to maturity and start getting some nice big leaves/stems.
I can start one for you if you like I currently have 2 mature Pothos growing on my bedroom wall right now :)
Hi Emily. Are you planning to ever do a video on all of the animals in your zoo enclosures? Maybe a quick walk through?
I love how you used the painting 🖼 as a background.
The pop eating thing happens with koalas too (I think I'm not a koala expert). Btw a lizard with separation anxiety both is something I never knew about. Poor skink. They seem like one of those reptiles which are very sociable
yep that's definitely a thing with Koalas too! I came here to see if it had been said =)
Baby koalas eat mum's poop before they can eat eucalyptus leaves =)
Great video! I love that the male climbed onto your ponytail and stared into the camera. I love your videos, I could watch you all day. I have watched you guys all day, actually.
I’ve been waiting to hear about your monkey tails! Love your channel ❤️
I love these guys. I have a breeding pair and they are my favorite pets, by far.
Ooo new animal to talk about! I love this channel so much for the educational and funny content that Snake discovery provides. Thank you so much for all your dedication and work, I hope 2022 is a wonderful year for you guys!!💕✨✨
I have a 1.2 circulus too 😊 this was my first ever reptile back in 1993. So happy to have some again. Especially since now that I know they are communal I am really enjoying watching my group interact. My one female is getting quite chubby so I’m about 5 months I will discover if she’s a momma or piglet lol
I love these videos, also, maybe do a Mexican Walking Fish? Or As Most People Call Them, An Axolotl
:0
i think there is an old axolotl video
@@scourgeface yes, there is a video about axolotls from a few years ago by Snake Discovery
That's so damm cool!! Bever knew Solomon island skinks were so damm social and bonded with their families so well!! Thanks for the info
We see you new editor.... and you're doing fantastic I love the little sound effects
Thank you for all the amazing videos. Only ever had a leopard gecko, and because of your channel, Clint’s, Dav’s, and adams I have a Kenyan sand boa and now a uromastyx. Hadn’t planned on the uro we named styx, but she’d been at a feeder supply for 5 months and no one was taking proper care of her. 24 hours after getting her and getting her warmed correctly; her colors came out and so did her personality. I’d have never thought of getting these animals without you all! All of you make the world a better place
Skinks are so cute
Koalafications...beautiful. Perfect. Every video on this channel is such a treat!
Ayyyy I’m early I love all your videos and how you are here to educate as much as you can over a wide variety of animals! Love watching all your vids to find out some amazing facts?!
It's also funny that Emily compares them to koalas early in the video and then tells us about how the skinks eat their parents poop to gain the right gut flora for digestion. Koalas do the exact same thing for their babies
Hey I’m first, we love your channel
love the new editing with the definitions its a very nice touch.
Hiiii love you guys!!!! Thank you for being so positive and amazing
You should host nocturnal nights! Where we explore the zoo in low light to see the animal that are more active at night!
I love these guys they are so cute
I am dying laughing at the male just hanging out on Emily’s head. The best hat.
Reptiles are the best hats.
If you haven’t already, search for Hawaiian pothos. They look similar to a golden pothos but the leaves are much larger. I don’t know what the growth rate is compared to other pothos but having the larger leaves could slow how how fast they devour the plant
I love your vlogs it great to see reptile lovers sharing there passion .
I love watching your videos, I used to watch your videos on how to properly handle, take care of, and how to treat your snake. I used your videos as refrences to taking care of my snake and now I would love to take care of some monkey tailed skinks too
I am nearly 21 but everytime I watch your videos, I am back to 10 watching the Animal Planet learning about the world!
Same! But chronologically, I fall into the senior division!
What a way to start the weekend , Ed and Emily and some reptiles what more could you want 🦋💜only Emily could film a video going into great detail with one on her head. This is why we love you guys xxx
thank you for making these videos! cause of your videos im going to get a corn snake!!
Wow.congratulations.. I got my first baby tortoise after watching their vdos 😄😄😄
@@jayharipura9997 thats great!
I had the best idea for merch!
Hears my idea, you think of a type of snake for each star sign and then have one of your merch artists draw the snake curled into the symbol of that sign!
Anyways you probably won’t see this but I really like your videos and you inspire me so much! Keep doing what your doing ❤️
I love you guys so, so, so, so, much!
I would like to just say that I got very distracted by all the quick zooming in and out on Emily, and it started to hurt my eyes a little. Other than that, another great and educational video ❤❤❤❤❤
Yay more snake discovery
I had a dream last night that I worked for y’all at the Snaks Discovery facility! I was checking on the bullsnakes and they were extremely sassy and tried to bite me! 😂
We got our first reptile, a prehensile tailed skink, 21 years ago and she is the most friendly and outgoing reptile we have. 2 years ago we bought 3 juveniles in the hope that they will produce babies. They are all bonded with each other but also very friendly and climb right out onto my arm when they want to come out. They are awesome!
1 st comment...love you guys.😃😃😃😃😃
The skink on Emily’s head is so cute!
I always thought it was interesting that because of their size and niche, they don't really look all that skink-y.
Haven’t commented before, but I wanted to say thank you so much for all of the amazing videos! I’m a huge snake fan, but my partner is terrified of them. Your videos are helping him slowly overcome his fear and has made him start to love snakes as well :)
Love your videos keep up the good.work ❤
I love skinks in general but I think I have a new favourite... They are lovely little critters!
Skinks are cool. I enjoyed watching. Hope they breed. It would be nice.
Hey Emily , not sure if someone said this already . But uromastyx babies also eat their parents droppings, to have their stomach flora acclimated to their foods they eat. Both Clint and Däv did very informative videos on the lizard. Love the channel and I hope the zoo is doing well
I got my first monkey tail in ‘93. I had her for 17 years. They are amazing!!! Just got my second. Hoping to get one more so my baby can live a full life.
i clicked on this so fast😭 love y’all 💕
So quick question. Since it's tail is prehensile does this mean that it cannot lose a segment of tail like many other lizards? Or do none of the skinks have this ability?
monkey tails lack the ability to drop their tails
If you take one of the shoits that has brown nubs (new growth) you can put them in a cup of water to root and then plant them once the roots are about an inch or two. That way you always have ones that are growing to replace the ones you have in the habitat.
Good job to anyone who sees this comment, have a great day 😊
You too
I live in Florida and have a EXCESSIVE amount of (invasive) golden pothos growing in my backyard, including massive 10 to 12 full grown leaves on part of a vine that is growing wayy up an oak tree. You can have as much at you'd like, if we can figure out shipping. ❤
Hi! Mike 3.0 from Outback Reptiles here!Importation of animals out of the Solomon Islands just got banned about a month ago or so from what we were told. Which means wild caught Monkey Tail Skinks will soon be unavailable. So if you are looking to get one you might only be able to find Captive bred ones around unless someone is selling their long term captive monkey tail skink! Hope this helps in some way!
They said theirs are wild caught though they didn’t want to go that route it was the only option they could find. They fully intend to captive breed most of their animals that are under pressure in the wild.
OMG the tongue on the little boy on Emily's head!!! Cracked me up.
They are so cool !!
Love your vids
Love your video’s keep it up
OMG I love these skinks one of my favorites to work with when I worked at a zoo.
You should make a giant board with all your feathers on it and under each feather is information on each bird or it could be a challenge to see who can name the most birds
Cool idea
@@rachelm6734 thx
This is so cool! Love the new outro btw!
Note to editor- Hello, a small note from a viewer. Pretty please, if possible, slow down on the zoom function. The whole video kept zooming in and out,I got a little icky tummy and woozies from watching, I had to stop. I just listened to it instead of watching. Thank you. Other than that, good editing.
Oh gosh my heart melted when I saw the little one on em's head
LOOK AT THAT FACEEEY
Aww crap. Ive been setting up a space for one of these and now that you guys are featuring them in a video, their prices are gonna skyrocket 🤦🏻♀ now I'm gonna have to get one before the enclosure is ready
Babies eating their parents poop for gut flora is also another koalification! Baby koalas also do this! Its a special poop called pap to jump start their gut bacteria so they can transition from milk to leaves. :D
I wonder if these were considered pests by cactus Air force or the Tokyo Express in world war II or if they just didn't notice these things existed? Because they like to climb I could imagine them getting into all kinds of interesting places on a Wildcat or an avenger
Ooooo new vid! Quickest I have seen a new one!
