Really enjoyed this video, here's my take on Dimmu Borgir's discography:
S Tier: Enthrone Darkness Triumphant (best DB album by a country mile, their only album in which they actually struck a balance between black metal and symphonic metal).
A Tier: Spiritual Black Dimensions (their second best album IMO, a really bad case of Loudness War prevents this album from being S tier), Stormblåst (a huge improvement over For All Tid, though there's those plagiarized keyboard lines that prevent this album from scoring higher), Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia (I'm pretty sure DB drew quite a bit of inspiration from Dødheimsgard's Satanic Art for this album, which is actually pretty cool).
B Tier: Stormblåst MMV (DB's always handled re-recorded versions pretty well, which is no exception here), For All Tid (a pretty decent debut, though the drumming is particularly sloppy and amateurish. OTOH, early DB has quite a few underappreciated bass lines).
C Tier: Death Cult Armageddon (a pretty meh album, though its highlights (Progenies of the Great Apocalypse, Allehelgens død i Helveds rike and Unorthodox Manifesto) are pure epic win).
D Tier: In Sorte Diaboli (the moment in which Dimmu Borgir became Demon Burger, though The Sacrilegious Scorn has a pretty good riff reminiscent of Prometheus-era Emperor), Eonian (not as bad of an album as many people make it out to be, though still pretty underwhelming, at least both singles (Interdimensonal Summit and Council of Wolves and Snakes) are pretty catchy, if a bit cheesy).
F Tier: Abrahadabra (DB's worst album by a landslide, Dimmu Borgir is the only song that I actually enjoy from here, everything else is pretty forgettable).

Eonian is growing on me. Hopefully it’s their first step in a new awesome direction ! Thanks for commenting! Judging by you list you are a big fan of the Mustis, Vortex, Barker era. Cool stuff. That’s when I got into them although I had listened to their older stuff before so I liked the present day Dimmu (back then) and their older stuff a lot!

Kudos to you for rebelling against your mom and buying black metal records!
My parents were okay with everything I did - including me wearing upside-down crosses and calling myself a satanist - and in fact it was my father who introduced me to black+death metal. They're cool like that. I think you and I are about the same age, so I definitely remember having to wait to hear a record because I'm from a small town and there weren't any good record stores. I kinda miss that anticipation, and not having a 24/7 unhindered access to every song ever meant that you had to learn to appreciate what you had...special times.
Anyway, I have a few comments on this video too 😅
    - I actually think Spiritual Black Dimensions has an overall darker/more evil sound than Enthrone Darkness Triumphant. Because it has so much more tritones and a richer keyboard arrangement, I feel it has an overall dark/evil sound, whereas EDT, having a more simple keyboard arrangement and a greater deal of more classical heavy metal chord progressions (like the outro of Spellbound) sounds more forlorn/nostalgic. Either way, EDT is overall the stronger than the two!
    - I'm not sure In Sorte Diaboli is more "commercial" than any previous album. In interviews even going as far back as 1997 they talked about how they wanted to create a sound with greater commercial appeal. There have been black metal puritans calling even their first record "not true". Not a huge fan of the record, though! To me it's kind of where it seems like they were starting to run out of ideas. I think overall it's very heavily oriented towards riffs, which is kind of a shame because it's at the expense of atmosphere.
I've always felt like Over bleknede blåner til dommedag is one of the best songs of their early career, and it's a shame they never re-recorded it! They played it live recently for their 30th year anniversary, have you seen the clips? They played so many 90s classics!
You know what I miss about Dimmu Borgir? Keyboards. There's something so sinister about the simple orchestral sounds on a keyboard, you know? Puritanical Euophoric Misanthropia had a total of 13 orchestra musicians if I can remember correctly, and I think that's just about as much as they need. I absolutely loved Death Cult Armageddon growing up, and it still has some bangers, but today I think that maybe it's where they started going full Batman movie soundtrack.

You are on to something. I wanted to take my time to reply to this comment cause you raise a lot of points that hit home. 1st that’s awesome that your parents were into Extreme Metal. My dad is not into metal at all (although not really against it) and my mom was into Metallica, scorpions, twisted sister, Queen, etc but never (then) into the more extreme metal. I think she was put off by the imagery and the satanism/violence of black and death metal and figured it would make me into a violent person 🤷🏻‍♂️. Parents just looking after their kid I suppose. That being said, she has since gone on to see Morbid Angel live, 1349 and other acts lately without me even knowing or being in the same city as her. She’ll send me a video or pics and I’ll be like “go mom!” lol.
Now as far as waiting for records to drop or saving up money to buy them… I miss those time. So much so that I have given up on streaming and decided to only listen to music I own on CD or vinyl (aside from the ocasional “reaction” video for my channel). There’s definitely something to cherishing and appreciating an album you own more than the free online streams. You actually take the time to take in an album, listen to it all the way through, browse through the booklet, look at lyrics… I see it on my students or younger bands I’ve recorded or worked with. They don’t even know albums or song names. I’ve had to sit there for hours waiting for them to find a song they wanted to show me and when they did find it, they only played about a minute of it before switching to a different song…
As far as the 90s stuff being played by DB I have not seen it. I’ll look for it cause it sounds cool. As I said on this video, I gave up on them a long time ago. Roughly about the time they became “Batman movie soundtrack” hahaha
Thanks for watching and commenting dude!

Spell Bound was the song that they caught my attention with. I had gotten a 10 year Anniversary Nuclear Blast vhs called Voyager and it had a Spell Bound perfomance video on it. Was a good year, 97 I think. That video also turned me on to Hypocrisy and Dissection.

    10. Stormblast MMW (Don't really consider as an album)
    9. Abrahadabra (It is what it is)
    8. Spiritual Black Dimensions (solid album but nothing that really interested me)
    7. In Sorte Diaboli (relentless album, some great tracks)
    6. Stormblast (cool album, raw aswell)
    5. Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia (cool, fast, industrial)
    4. For All Tid (great debut album, really cold)
    3. Death Cult Armageddon (majestic and epic)
    2. Eonian (hear me out, this album gets me into the whole genre, it reminds me of EDT but like ambient, softer version)
    1. Enthrone Darkness Triumphant (the greatest album in the whole discography, no doubt, every song is fantastic)

Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia with some awesome tracka are blessings upon the throne of tyranny, Architecture of a Genocidal Nature, Burn in Hell, Absolute sole right, Sympozuim. Enthrone Darkness Triumphant with tracks that i really liked is A Succubus in Rapture, Tormentor of Christian Souls, mourning palace, in Death's Embrace and lastly the night masquerade. 2 years later and this video FINALLY appeared in my feed. Better late than never! My top would be:
    10 Abrahadabra
    9 Eonian
    8 In Sorte Diaboli
    7 Death Cult Armageddon
    6 Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia
    5 Stormblast 2005
Here it was the hardest to rank because they're all really amazing in their own right.
    4 Spiritual Black Dimensions
    3 For All Tid
    2 Enthrone Darkness Triumphant
    1 Stormblast
What I wish to bring up is that Stormblast 2005 really grew on me with more relistens. They really improved quite a few old tracks and I'm a bit salty that the choirs on Broderskapets Ring and Dodsferd weren't featured on the OG Stormblast. Or the beautiful piano and flute parts on the rerecording, since I believe that they'd have sounded even better with the clearer recording quality they were going for. Also I saw many black metal keyboardists, my own friend Hylke95 included, believing that Spiritual Black Dimensions is one of the best if not THE best collection of dark symphonic sounds out there. And I really agree with that sentiment, I saw many purists claiming SBD isn't black metal and the point where Dimmu sold out, but I can look beyond all that because of the amazing musicianship we've seen on it.
Lastly, on the Stormblast VS Enthrone Darkness Triumphant debate, it's really hard for me to choose between them, since they contain 2 of my all time favorite Dimmu songs: Stormblast and A Succubus In Rapture. In hindsight, Stormblast edges out EDT for me only a little due to the softer and rawer quality which makes its atmosphere darker. To me EDT was kind of like Dimmu's The Black album, more mainstream ish but still well loved before people said the ship went downhill, and funnily enough there's quite a lot of thrash and goth influences on it. I'm looking at you, The Night Masquerade, Master of Disharmony and A Succubus In Rapture.

Haha yeah… YT can be dumb like that sometimes…
NICE! I can respect that a lot. The keyboards on SBD are amazing. Mustis came out swinging and showcased his style adding a whole new depth to the band. EDT is of course my favorite album but I do love that mid Dimmu era with Mustis and Vortex. From ISD on though… 🫤

You may disagree, but hear me out (I wont judge anything after 2007, as these 2 albums are just ridiculous), so I just make it a Top 3.
    1. Spiritual Black Dimensions
    - I hated this album so much at first back then, it took me some years to grow into. After EDT this was so much different, I just couldnt stand it. But over the years its by far my most played DB album. Many times the album you despise first, will grow into something way better over the years. Mustis/Vortex/Astennu worked wonders here, the whole album a cosmic/atmospheric BM wonderland that is just unique and full of fantastic songs. Years ahead of its time.
    2. Enthrone Darkness Triumphant
    - Nothing much to add here. This is music history. In many countries this was the FIRST black metal album, that entered the regular album charts. Thats how much they took the world by storm. Mostly owed to Peter Tägtgren. Never before has a BM band dared to use such a professional sound like DB did here. In fact, he used the powerful Hypocrisy sound for Dimmu Borgirs black metal songs. The rest is history.
    3. Death Cult Armageddon
    - As artists, DCA is the absolute peak in their career. Insane songs, perfect use of Vortex fantastic voice, Mustis soundscapes just breathtaking, Nicholas drums....no need for words here, he just hammers everything away. For their vision of black metal meets orchestra, they did their best work here. Very orchestral, but still BRUTAL AS FUCK with blastbeats all along.

    • @PatPosse
      @PatPosse  2 роки тому

Dude I agree 100% with every thing you said here. I didn't ranking in the same order you did but you are 100% accurate on how you described each album. Spiritual Black Dimensions was definitely hated at first by most of us. Some of us still can't get passed it (myself included) but was definitely better than most of what was to come! EDT Is definitely a milestone as far as black metal goes and DCA was the last great album they made. Even though is far from being my favorite Dimmu Album, they had stepped up artistically, musically and visually. It was a great time to get into them like I did!
      Cheers man!

@@PatPosse Absolutely it was hated back then by most, but I think its with any album, that comes after the defining masterpiece of any band. Sure it was tempting to just do EDT Part 2, but with Astennu/Mustis/Vortex finally joining, I think they were bursting with talent, inspiration and new ideas.
I remember how the use of clean vocal parts or guitar solos in a BM album was especially frowned up. But is now much loved and missed.

@@PatPosse You're welcome. I found myself enjoying Dimmu Borgir more once they fully embraced the symphonic territories of their sound. It suits them IMO😁

I can’t argue with that logic… even though I obviously prefer the older stuff I can agree that the symphonies were amazing and added depth to their epic music (especially in the Mustis era). I wonder if they’ll come up with a new, heavier album… 🤔

Abrahadabra has got to be the dumbest name for a black metal album, if it was a name for a Rush album it probably wouldn't seem so dumb. As for the album itself, I think I can only appreciate a total of 3 songs: Gateways, Chess with the abyss and Dimmu Borgir. Death Cult Armageddon might be the last Dimmu album that I can respect for what it is.

I love how everybody has a different take on things... Most Dimmu fans who like their newer stuff praise Eonian! I didn't like it much either.. But that's what makes music so awesome and subjective!

@@PatPosse Maybe For all Tid also great. Its fluid. Stormblast is to soft for my blackmetaltaste. Enthroned has their best songs, but also weak Ones. Same with Spiritual Dimensions. But they have a weakness that runs through their entire discography. There aren't any epic 10 minute anthems or anything like that. Even in some of their very best titles, at times you'd think they could do longer, even better and more epic than that. And i forgot In Sorte Diaboli. Also meh.

    • @PatPosse
      @PatPosse  11 місяців тому

Fair enough... Stormblast is a great album, I suppose you got to position yourself in that era to really appreciate it though. It was all about atmosphere and overall darkness rather than heaviness back then...

@@PatPosse Stormblast was my introduction to black metal, so I liked it at the time. Until I discovered Burzum, Darkthrone and Lunar Aurora and later Moonblood and Mütiilation were added. That's why it changed for me. And when you put it in the league of other symphonic black metal masterpieces like in the nightside eclipse, it just can't keep up. It has this aggressiveness in the guitars that I miss in Stormblast.

Eonian is actually nice and has all elements that made Dimmu but with less of this orchestral stuff. Didn't even know it exists because I stopped after Death Cult, their worst album imo. It was so overproduced and dry, full of boring power chord riffs, and no oomph. Eonian and Abra at least had acceptable productions

    • @PatPosse

I've only listened to it once and I can tell you I like it better than Abrahadabra, it's no masterpiece as some might want you to believe but an ok album
