Not a huge Dimmu fan. But I really like Enthrone Darkness Triumphant a lot.

    9. Eonian - too refined and too much choir
    8. Abrahadabra - very uneven and Mustis' presence is missed
    7. For All Tid - raw but with some great moments
    6. Death Cult Armageddon - my first DB album. It's good but gets to be a bit long of a listen.
    5. Stormblast (original) - One of the better signature 90's black metal albums
    4. Spiritual Black Dimensions - keyboards and dynamics are incredible on this one
    3. In Sorte Diaboli - a focused concept album with great performances, drumming and meaning
    2. Puriticanal Euphoric Misanthropia - phenomenal production and drumming, great songs
    1. Enthroned Darkness Triumphant - full-stop this is the desert island DB album

You have the right order, except For All Tid is better than Death Cult. Rich has no clue about real Black Metal and his order is comical, Enthrone is by far their best album. Your 8 & 9 are completely a joke and are definitely the bottom. And, Stormblast original is much better than the redone version and Deathcult sounds like a Star Wars soundtrack with some heavy vocals.

I really love Dimmu Borgir, even the newer stuff. They have a reasonably consistent catalog, but that run of albums from "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" straight through to "In Sorte Diaboli" is just god-tier symphonic black metal.

Dimmu Borgir was one of my teenage years band along with Cradle of Filth. I was shown Enthroned Darkness Triumphant by a friend and loved it, I bought Spiritual Black Dimensions when it came out and till this day it's my favourite album, the perfect mix between older more traditional black metal from the early days and the symphonic elements which are way overdone in latest releases. After In Sorte Diaboli, ICS Vortex and Mustiis left and changed it too much for me without them. For me the ranking goes like this:
    1 - Spiritual Black Dimensions
    2 - Enthroned Darkness Triumphant
    3 - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropy
    4 - stormblast (original)
    5 - Death Cult Armageddon
    6 - in sorte diaboli
    7 - For all tid
    8 - Abrahadabra
    9 - Eonian

When you said you appreciate how they question christianity instead of just bashing it, I felt a bit of relief that you don't understand the lyrics to their first albums haha.
The only albums I don't love are the bottom two. Not a fan at all of the nightwishification of Dimmu.

  • @georgecostan3248

    1. Spiritual Black Dimensions - it really feels like everybody in the band played to their full strengths and gave the album an unmatched edge.
    2. Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia (especially the remaster)
    3. Stormblast MMV - I like the power and the dark vibe the rerecordings have. The original sounds more romantic, but the agression is castrated by the production.
    4. Enthroned Darkness Triumphant (though, the songs always had a better feel live, especially with Barker)
    5. Death Cult Armageddon (though, too ambitious for a live setting)
    6. In Sorte Diaboli (though, the mix should have been more organic, for its thrashy feel)
    7. Abrahadabra (again, the mix needed a more live feel, like on the live DVD)
    8. For All Tid - I liked the album a lot years ago, but its crappy mix neuters the aggression of the songs and many ideas are there, but the execution is lacking. Also, some songs sound better on Godless Savage Garden just because the right people play the proper instruments and the mix gives power to the guitars. In short, who produced the album didn't understand black metal and it made it too vocals and bass+drums centered, like an electronic album.
    9. Eonian - some songs are good, but overall, it's too intelectual, while Shagrath really should stop singing. Also, I hate the first two songs. It feels like the album took too much time to finish it and has a stale vibe.

Album Abrahadabra also has a Deep Purple cover - Perfect Strangers( bonus track) , Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia also has a bonus track Devils Path( solo played by Andy LaRocque from King Diamond) and they did a cover to Accept - Metal Heart (Godless Savage Garden 1998 compilation album)! Astennu did brilliant solos, great guitarist! Arcane Lifeforce Mysteria is my top Dimmu song!

I appreciate that more extreme metal bands are being represented on the channel so thanks a lot for doing that. But one thing I would like to mention. I don't expect people that don't speak Norwegian to pronounce Norwegian words perfectly . But at least try to do a little research on how to say things correctly. Like the name of the band you are talking about or what the bands members are called.. just some advice to make the channel a little bit better.

@@Arutha_Con_Doin the first four tracks ( the EP) have that sound that I love about the two records it’s sandwiched between.

Great video gents! Dimmu Borgir are the band that first got me into black metal in 1997, absolutely fantastic band. My order is...
    9. Abrahadabra. Good album, but something is just missing
    8. Eonian. A step up from the previous one.
    7. For all tid. Amazing mid 90s black metal, just not who they are going to be.
    6. In sorte diaboli. A fantastic album.
    5. Stormblast. Better than the debut.
    4. Spiritual black dimensions. A absolute classics
    3. Puritanical euphoric misanthropia. Almost perfect.
    2. Death cult armageddon. Astonishing album.

I do listen to a fair amount of black metal, but I have to admit I'm not really into this band. Nevertheless, it's kind of nice to see Sea of Tranquility do a ranking for them. Stormblast and Enthrone Darkness were new when I was getting into the style, and so i did buy those albums along with the debut. if I was to listen to this band now, I'd probably still go for the early stuff. I don't really consider it very "traditional" BM since even on the debut the keyboards are in a way the most prominent instrument. Interesting banda nd trajectory though.
BTW, Pete, if you're reading this, you might find this particularly interesting -- the keyboardist in the band in the early days had a tendency to rip off stuff from other artists, and I'm not sure the band was really aware of it till later. If you listen to the piano/keyboard intro to Stormblast, you can tell it's absolutely a tribute to "Sacred Hour" from magnum. No idea whether anybody in the band besides the keyboardist at the time was really aware of this. They fired him eventually for not being dedicated enough or something.

I can understand that Rich doesn't care much about the first 2 albums because they sound very low-fi, they do but they are just not that good by comparison to some of the stuff that got released around the same time (Darkthrone, Immortal, mayhem, Dissection,..). I would say Dimmu Borgir were the equivalent of Winger for the BM scene 😁
