If you have this issue with this valve DO EVERYTHING AS SHE INSTRUCTS YOU TO DO! Had this problem saturday morning, followed her instructions and the computer board was bad. On a whim had my wife call our HVAC company. Told tech everything I'd done. He confirmed that "yes, the pilot won't stay lit and the valve isn't showing any code". He said, " you could probably change the computer board for around $200 or we can install a new 50 gallon commercial water heater for $1900 sunday morning." Waited til monday morning, bought new valve,pulled board and installed in existing valve. saving $1700 was definitely worth stinking for 3 days.

How is it that appliance problems seems to always happen on a weekend or around 7-8:00 pm? My 20 year old water heater quit Sunday, December 26th. I bought a new one and installed it myself that day. Consequently, it’s a Rheem with a Honeywell controller. I’m thrilled that I stumbled across this video as it is so informative and to the point with specifically explained step by step instructions! I don’t currently have any issues with the water heater but I saved the video to my Home Repair playlist just in case. Thank you for a great video and some great testimonials provide the proof that even I could accomplish this repair.
That HVAC company saw you coming. A new gas valve is a C note and a whole burner assembly, pilot generator and all the wiring and sensors of a hundred bucks. At no time, for any reason whatsoever, in my 40 years of repairing water heaters, have I, or anyone I've worked with, EVER pulled out a computer board and replaced it. Glad it worked out for you.

I appreciate the fact that you took the time to explain each step in detail, and how it could possibly relate to the overall effort to solve the problem. Other videos often show you what they did after they’ve already done it, but that’s not really ‘teaching’. You clearly showed how to do each step, which was awesome and amazing. Thank you.
The same process applies for troubleshooting a gas fireplace. My Thermopyle failed and a repair company wanted $600 just to come out and troubleshoot the problem. Thank God for youtube, Amazon and the nice people willing to share their knowledge.

I have watched a number of tutorial videos over the years and this was one of the most detailed one I have ever watched. I am an impatient person and had a fairly good knowledge of the basics related to this project so I kept saying ok I got it, Now on the other hand for someone that is just learning this technician explained so basic and complete there should have been no questions by the student. I'm pretty knowledgable about this sort of thing. I was ready to criticize this video, but honestly, I can't. Your troubleshooting was exactly spot-on and logical and your repair was exactly the right thing to do. I might add, if the heater is under warranty, call the manufacturer. I have known of them sending out en entirely new valve that can be spun in.

The pilot side of the gas valve ended up being bad on mine. I was going to get a new water heater, but I figured at this point, why not go ahead and look inside the gas valve. It took a special Torx security bit to open it (I already happened to have one). A tiny hairs width wire had become un-soldered on the pilot valve solenoid. After cleaning off a little insulation from the wire I managed to get it re-soldered and re-assembled (it was touch and go). Now it was clicking with the 9 volt battery test just like in the video. With no gas leak smell, I went ahead and tried lighting the water heater. It works great! Thank you Frugal DIY for the best instructional video I have ever seen!
Excellent video. It helped me troubleshoot my water heater to a bad thermopile. I paid about $35 and swapped out the old pilot and thermopile assy and the burner fired up right away. Your video was well made and very descriptive. Good job. It saved me about $2200 that a plumber wanted to charge me.

Excellent video. It's long but worth it. After 35 years of plumbing, I'm going to have even my experienced plumbers watch this video. You didn't mention holding the switch on very hot for 10 seconds, then hot for 10 seconds and then pilot for ten seconds to reset the WV control board. But it's better to replace the board since this doesn't always work permanently. Thank you for the great video!!

hey jimmy - question: can you please recommend a 50 gallon water heater brand/model that does NOT have one of these crappy honeywell thermostats on it? im hoping to find one with the old fashioned dial/knob gas control valve, but so far i can only find that in a 75 gallon rheem, which i wanted to get. but it has 1 inch diameter vs the 3/4 pipe outlets on the 50gal - and i was told was the pressure would be bad for my pipes. is that true? i would be grateful for any info you could offer - thanks!

What a refreshingly thorough troubleshooting video! I was led on a wild goose chase by some professional plumber videos, but this one exactly diagnosed and SOLVED my problem, and saved me from the hassle of draining the heater and taking it apart. I noticed, after receiving the "new" board I bought on ebay for $45, that my old board was missing the ground pin seat. I found it sitting under the water heater, and am wondering if it lost contact before I took it off and was the cause of the failure. If this ever happens again, I will first try re-soldering the seat to the old board to see if that fixes it. Meanwhile, my kids will be enjoying some hot showers. Thank you!
@Teach Them Piano, I found the same thing, the ground pin contact was broken off and sitting on the drain pan under the water heater. I soldered mine back on and it is now back in normal operation. I believe the original solder failed causing the pilot light to go out.
I usually don't watch videos this long, however, this women is covering a perplexing topic about how to troubleshoot and fix problems that occasionally come up with a water heater, and doing a vary thorough job of it, and I for one appreciate that.

I followed this on my Rheem water heater after a supply line burst and the pilot went out. I fixed the supply line and couldn't get the unit relit. It's only 3 years old. It was definitely the logic board. Thanks for the tip! You saved us hundreds! We're up and running again!

Great instructional video and really appreciate the description of each part and how to isolate test each one. I followed your diagnostic steps and isolated the problem to the control board as well. I found the pin contact for the gas valve ground pin hole of the control board had come loose and fallen off. I was able to solder it back on and returned the water heater to normal operation. Two hours of diagnostics and repair on a Sunday evening made it so the family can have hot showers on a Monday morning before school and work. Not to mention the $$$ saved, I was about ready to go buy a new water heater. I'll be following your channel, Thanks.

Great video. I would like to recommend before removing the burner. Remove the pilot tube and verify you have gas coming out of the valve. Next like you mention blow out the pilot tube. Make sure your thermal switch isn’t tripped and try to light the pilot. Most of the time that works. Unless it’s a bad thermopile it will light.
Thank you Frugal DIY! This video helped me troubleshoot and repair my water heater. I followed each step and determined the circuit card was bad. I found a new one at my local Ace Hardware for about $200. It came in the gas control valve assembly like you said. Following your video I was able to replace the bad card in my water heater on Saturday morning in time for hot water by lunchtime. The front plastic cover on the one I purchased was labeled "Resideo" instead of "Honeywell" and the part number on the side was WV8840B1110 while my original was WV8840C1605, but the card inside looked identical and after I installed it my water heater started working again. The only difference I notice is the status light signaling that is it working blinks white instead of blue. Thank you so much for saving me money by equipping me to fix it myself.

Great video, helped me find that my board was physically broken when they put it together at the factory. When they put it together it wasn't lined up and you can see where the ground pin punched into the board next to where it was supposed to go and only one of the three clips was even touching the board. The spring fingers came off when I removed the PCB; I soldered it back on and the valve works again but I'm going to replace it hopefully under warranty because that's clearly bad workmanship.
This might be the best how-to video I've seen, and I have seen quite a lot of them. Thorough, accurate and patient explanation. My impatient nature when watching these things kicks in and I get ansty; and sometimes that causes me to skip when I think I already know what's being shown to me, but with your video I stayed the course even when you got a little repetitive; it helped to drill in the information, even the simplest little thing. I was able to get up and go follow your lead without taking notes and coming back to review. so thank you for taking the time to do this!

What a GREAT instructional video. My heater is starting to act up pilot light going out every week or so. When it first done it I took the burner assembly out and cleaned it, vacuumed vents. That was probably was 3 or 4 months ago but has went out a couple more times. This has given me more ammunition to diagnose my problem, so thank you so much for this very informative video…….

The size of the torx bit. For persons (not like you and I and some others) who don't have tools, and who will have to purchase the correct bit, not knowing what size 🤔 will cause a purchase of a set. It appears to be a 15 torx bit. Overall, 99% is still considered extremely useful information and instruction for the DIY. 😊 THANK YOU FOR POSTING. Peace and Love
I just wanted to say thank you. Your video was the only one I found that went through every step that I needed. If this video didn't have the answer I would have been calling a HVAC company. The part that helped me was you mentioned that if there isn't enough gas going through the tube for the pilot light then there could be something stuck in there. I had some canned air and that did the trick. Also you telling us it will take time for the thermopile to get up the correct voltage helped as I thought mine wasn't working as it was taking forever. Like Andy Bayak said, do everything instructed as this will pinpoint the problem and save you money. You do not know how happy I am.

One thing I learned on was the vent under the unit needs to be cleaned every so often cause the pilot flame needs air for it to stay lit. That is most common problem when the pilot flame goes out. However your video is great goes into good detail. Thank you so much 👍👍👍🇺🇸

wow, how fantastic is this!? As others already wrote, these units are programed to go kaputt on a weekend. I spent a whole day following all kinds of videos and then came to this beautiful post. Based on this step-by-step process I conclude it is the board on mine as well. Now for the hunt to find one. Initially thought it was the thermopile. In my case the pilot is working, and the valves do the click when I test with the battery. Thank you so much for this wonderful set of instructions.

I'd search the model number of your gas valve (found on the right side of the cover of the gas valve) on eBay and look for just a control board. There are sellers, who are plumbers, on eBay that sell the control boards from working water heaters they pulled. I'd buy one of those from a highly-rated seller. I hope this helps. You'll have hot water soon!

This is an amazing video! Covered each and every way to troubleshoot the water heater and the gas valve. Took me a month to find this video but it was well worth the cold showers as I saved $2900+ dollars for what literally was a $30 computer board on eBay. The HVAC company I called initially wanted to just replace the entire water heater system. Very glad I came across this video!

Currently renting a room in a house, tried to jump into the shower and had to jump back out very quickly -- went to look at the water heater and read up on this electronic valve controller because I'd never seen one before. After reading the labels, hopped on UA-cam to learn more and found this video. Thankfully I didn't have to deal with any bad boards, the water temp must've just been set too high or something faulted somewhere and locked the valve up. Maybe just bought myself a few more days on this board, or maybe it'll just keep working for a while, but thank you so much for explaining all of this. Eventually got the pilot lit and the board powered back up! Landlord is also very grateful :P

Thank you for the very comprehensive explanation. It helped me clear some doubts and get to the root cause of a problem with two water heaters. Even though the video mentions that it is very rare that the control valves (solenoids) fail, I found faulty solenoids in two different heaters of the same age. One had a bad pilot solenoid and the other one the problem was on the main burner solenoid. I managed to combine the two good solenoids in one control valve body and later fixed the other two solenoids (soldering the cables that were with bad contact). In the end, I could fix both water heaters without spending a penny. My doubt was if I could test the solenoids with a battery, as they work with millivolts from the thermopile and it was cleared out by this video that uses a 9V battery to test the solenoids. I noticed that some solenoids are set by even a 1.5V Csize battery while others are only set with the 9V battery, but both work well with the millivolts from the Thermopile.

jumping in here to add my voice to the others raving about this video. i followed all of the detailed instructions and ended up having a shot control board. ordered a new valve from Honeywell (now supplied by an off-shoot Honeywell Home brand called Resideo fwiw) off of Amazon for about $175, it arrived the next morning by 7:30, and i was able to get the control boards swapped out and my pilot-relit in about 5 minutes. thank you so much for this video, you easily saved me a thousand dollars by giving me the tools to diagnose the problem.
I have spent hours and hours trying to find troubleshooting information for my State water heater. Your video is so amazing and I am sending it to all my children and anyone else I can think of. Last September I spent $170 for 15 minutes of service to a couple of (young) plumbers who told me that there were no error codes, and the pilot light works just fine - lights up fine and this was information that I already knew. My husband and I were told that gusts of wind coming down the exhaust pipe (if that's what you call it) were putting out the flame. No troubleshooting was done at all. The problem continued. So periodically, I climb up into the attic and relight the water heater. It has been staying lit for a couple months at a time but now is going out weekly. My husband is getting antsy and does not trust my DIY skills. I may have to call out a plumber, but thanks to you I know more about water heaters and hope I can find a troubleshooting plumber.
Hey Terri. Yes, wind coming down the flue/exhaust pipe can cause the flame to extinguish. But, that's rarely the case re the issue you're having. Some plumbers, who are not ethical, don't want to troubleshoot the issue; they want to replace stuff that doesn't need replacing and charge you a boatload of money. Hence, that why I fix stuff myself. I learn as I go, and you can too. Please tell your husband that Frugal DIY (me) is asking that he PLEASE stand down and let you give a go at fixing the issue. I know that you can, and I have no doubt about that. Girl, get yourself a multimeter, just like mine (Harbor Freight $6.99) and troubleshoot the issue. I'm in my 60s, and have to crawl up in the attic tomorrow to replace the belt on my whole house fan, and I'm happy to do that so I can fix it myself and save boatloads of money. You've got this and can fix the water heater all by yourself. My guess is the thermopile is weak and giving way (here's the link to my video re how to change a thermopile: ua-cam.com/video/httzdihCxvM/v-deo.html) or, most likely, it's the control board faulty. Get to fixin' now--ya hear?
I agree with the other comments. This is really an outstanding video. She is very thorough safe, and easy to follow in explaining her troubleshooting steps. Step by step she shows how to verify each working part while isolating the faulty part(s) needing cleaned or replaced. I to had a bad control board. So, I purchased a used one on Ebay, installed it and my water heater now works perfect. I learned a lot in the process and saved $. Thank you!
Yo let me tell you. U r the best. Almost replaced the valve entirely. I did your 9v test already had replaced the thermocouple for nothing but that was cheap. Bout the valve from Amazon same one just replaced the cover n board without removing the board since connector was easy to get at. Boom came up. 3 days no hot water awful. My wife so happy. Your the only person that showed how to troubleshoot each component. Dam I’m excited lol. Thanks

You just saved me a minimum $700. I swapped out the gas-valve cover with circuit board after testing both vales per instructions. Now in new condition. Great to have my hot water back. Thanks & best wishes
This video saves another .... our heater stopped working. I couldn't keep flame going ... thought for sure it was thermopile. Tested it isolated and it was fine ... when I tested with the thermal switch I had nothing. Found there is a little black "button" on this switch like a breaker that can trip. Once reset everything started working as it should. Saved me a visit from the plumber. THANK YOU!

Outstanding video. You saved me hundreds of dollars. Your explanation is easy. I went through every step and everything was working fine. Pulled out the control board and a piece fell out. This piece was one of three "pyramid" looking metal domes. These are what make contact with the pins on the gas valve. Ordered a used one on Ebay, but is going to be 7 days to deliver. That's a lot of cold showers. I soldered this "pyramid" to its spot on the control board. Installed the soldered board and it fired right up. Thank you again. Best video on UA-cam for this issue!!!!!

If you have this issue with this valve DO EVERYTHING AS SHE INSTRUCTS YOU TO DO! Had this problem saturday morning, followed her instructions and the computer board was bad. On a whim had my wife call our HVAC company. Told tech everything I'd done. He confirmed that "yes, the pilot won't stay lit and the valve isn't showing any code". He said, " you could probably change the computer board for around $200 or we can install a new 50 gallon commercial water heater for $1900 sunday morning." Waited til monday morning, bought new valve,pulled board and installed in existing valve. saving $1700 was definitely worth stinking for 3 days.

How is it that appliance problems seems to always happen on a weekend or around 7-8:00 pm? My 20 year old water heater quit Sunday, December 26th. I bought a new one and installed it myself that day. Consequently, it’s a Rheem with a Honeywell controller. I’m thrilled that I stumbled across this video as it is so informative and to the point with specifically explained step by step instructions! I don’t currently have any issues with the water heater but I saved the video to my Home Repair playlist just in case. Thank you for a great video and some great testimonials provide the proof that even I could accomplish this repair.
That HVAC company saw you coming. A new gas valve is a C note and a whole burner assembly, pilot generator and all the wiring and sensors of a hundred bucks. At no time, for any reason whatsoever, in my 40 years of repairing water heaters, have I, or anyone I've worked with, EVER pulled out a computer board and replaced it. Glad it worked out for you.

The same process applies for troubleshooting a gas fireplace. My Thermopyle failed and a repair company wanted $600 just to come out and troubleshoot the problem. Thank God for youtube, Amazon and the nice people willing to share their knowledge.

I'm pretty knowledgable about this sort of thing. I was ready to criticize this video, but honestly, I can't. Your troubleshooting was exactly spot-on and logical and your repair was exactly the right thing to do. I might add, if the heater is under warranty, call the manufacturer. I have known of them sending out en entirely new valve that can be spun in.

The pilot side of the gas valve ended up being bad on mine. I was going to get a new water heater, but I figured at this point, why not go ahead and look inside the gas valve. It took a special Torx security bit to open it (I already happened to have one). A tiny hairs width wire had become un-soldered on the pilot valve solenoid. After cleaning off a little insulation from the wire I managed to get it re-soldered and re-assembled (it was touch and go). Now it was clicking with the 9 volt battery test just like in the video. With no gas leak smell, I went ahead and tried lighting the water heater. It works great! Thank you Frugal DIY for the best instructional video I have ever seen!
Excellent video. It helped me troubleshoot my water heater to a bad thermopile. I paid about $35 and swapped out the old pilot and thermopile assy and the burner fired up right away. Your video was well made and very descriptive. Good job. It saved me about $2200 that a plumber wanted to charge me.

Excellent video. It's long but worth it. After 35 years of plumbing, I'm going to have even my experienced plumbers watch this video. You didn't mention holding the switch on very hot for 10 seconds, then hot for 10 seconds and then pilot for ten seconds to reset the WV control board. But it's better to replace the board since this doesn't always work permanently. Thank you for the great video!!

hey jimmy - question: can you please recommend a 50 gallon water heater brand/model that does NOT have one of these crappy honeywell thermostats on it? im hoping to find one with the old fashioned dial/knob gas control valve, but so far i can only find that in a 75 gallon rheem, which i wanted to get. but it has 1 inch diameter vs the 3/4 pipe outlets on the 50gal - and i was told was the pressure would be bad for my pipes. is that true? i would be grateful for any info you could offer - thanks!

What a refreshingly thorough troubleshooting video! I was led on a wild goose chase by some professional plumber videos, but this one exactly diagnosed and SOLVED my problem, and saved me from the hassle of draining the heater and taking it apart. I noticed, after receiving the "new" board I bought on ebay for $45, that my old board was missing the ground pin seat. I found it sitting under the water heater, and am wondering if it lost contact before I took it off and was the cause of the failure. If this ever happens again, I will first try re-soldering the seat to the old board to see if that fixes it. Meanwhile, my kids will be enjoying some hot showers. Thank you!

@Teach Them Piano, I found the same thing, the ground pin contact was broken off and sitting on the drain pan under the water heater. I soldered mine back on and it is now back in normal operation. I believe the original solder failed causing the pilot light to go out.
I usually don't watch videos this long, however, this women is covering a perplexing topic about how to troubleshoot and fix problems that occasionally come up with a water heater, and doing a vary thorough job of it, and I for one appreciate that.

I followed this on my Rheem water heater after a supply line burst and the pilot went out. I fixed the supply line and couldn't get the unit relit. It's only 3 years old.

Great instructional video and really appreciate the description of each part and how to isolate test each one. I followed your diagnostic steps and isolated the problem to the control board as well. I found the pin contact for the gas valve ground pin hole of the control board had come loose and fallen off. I was able to solder it back on and returned the water heater to normal operation. Two hours of diagnostics and repair on a Sunday evening made it so the family can have hot showers on a Monday morning before school and work. Not to mention the $$$ saved, I was about ready to go buy a new water heater. I'll be following your channel, Thanks.

Great video. I would like to recommend before removing the burner. Remove the pilot tube and verify you have gas coming out of the valve. Next like you mention blow out the pilot tube. Make sure your thermal switch isn’t tripped and try to light the pilot. Most of the time that works. Unless it’s a bad thermopile it will light.
Thank you Frugal DIY! This video helped me troubleshoot and repair my water heater. I followed each step and determined the circuit card was bad. I found a new one at my local Ace Hardware for about $200. It came in the gas control valve assembly like you said. Following your video I was able to replace the bad card in my water heater on Saturday morning in time for hot water by lunchtime. The front plastic cover on the one I purchased was labeled "Resideo" instead of "Honeywell" and the part number on the side was WV8840B1110 while my original was WV8840C1605, but the card inside looked identical and after I installed it my water heater started working again. The only difference I notice is the status light signaling that is it working blinks white instead of blue. Thank you so much for saving me money by equipping me to fix it myself.

FYI - Honeywell spun off a part of the company a few years ago which is now called Residio
Great video, helped me find that my board was physically broken when they put it together at the factory. When they put it together it wasn't lined up and you can see where the ground pin punched into the board next to where it was supposed to go and only one of the three clips was even touching the board. The spring fingers came off when I removed the PCB; I soldered it back on and the valve works again but I'm going to replace it hopefully under warranty because that's clearly bad workmanship.

This might be the best how-to video I've seen, and I have seen quite a lot of them. Thorough, accurate and patient explanation. My impatient nature when watching these things kicks in and I get ansty; and sometimes that causes me to skip when I think I already know what's being shown to me, but with your video I stayed the course even when you got a little repetitive; it helped to drill in the information, even the simplest little thing. I was able to get up and go follow your lead without taking notes and coming back to review. so thank you for taking the time to do this!

What a GREAT instructional video. My heater is starting to act up pilot light going out every week or so. When it first done it I took the burner assembly out and cleaned it, vacuumed vents. That was probably was 3 or 4 months ago but has went out a couple more times. This has given me more ammunition to diagnose my problem, so thank you so much for this very informative video…….

The size of the torx bit. For persons (not like you and I and some others) who don't have tools, and who will have to purchase the correct bit, not knowing what size 🤔 will cause a purchase of a set. I just wanted to say thank you. Your video was the only one I found that went through every step that I needed. If this video didn't have the answer I would have been calling a HVAC company. The part that helped me was you mentioned that if there isn't enough gas going through the tube for the pilot light then there could be something stuck in there. I had some canned air and that did the trick. Also you telling us it will take time for the thermopile to get up the correct voltage helped as I thought mine wasn't working as it was taking forever. Like Andy Bayak said, do everything instructed as this will pinpoint the problem and save you money. You do not know how happy I am.

One thing I learned on was the vent under the unit needs to be cleaned every so often cause the pilot flame needs air for it to stay lit. That is most common problem when the pilot flame goes out. However your video is great goes into good detail. Thank you so much 👍👍👍🇺🇸

wow, how fantastic is this!? As others already wrote, these units are programed to go kaputt on a weekend. I spent a whole day following all kinds of videos and then came to this beautiful post. Based on this step-by-step process I conclude it is the board on mine as well. Now for the hunt to find one. Initially thought it was the thermopile. In my case the pilot is working, and the valves do the click when I test with the battery.

I'd search the model number of your gas valve (found on the right side of the cover of the gas valve) on eBay and look for just a control board. There are sellers, who are plumbers, on eBay that sell the control boards from working water heaters they pulled. I'd buy one of those from a highly-rated seller. I hope this helps. You'll have hot water soon!
@@frugaldiy1 yep, I found some whole units and one with just the control board. It is in fact the same one you listed in your video. The problem is that it takes three days to get here and my wife does not like that. Maybe I can strike a deal with one of the local companies....

This is an amazing video! Covered each and every way to troubleshoot the water heater and the gas valve. Took me a month to find this video but it was well worth the cold showers as I saved $2900+ dollars for what literally was a $30 computer board on eBay. The HVAC company I called initially wanted to just replace the entire water heater system. Very glad I came across this video!

Currently renting a room in a house, tried to jump into the shower and had to jump back out very quickly -- went to look at the water heater and read up on this electronic valve controller because I'd never seen one before. After reading the labels, hopped on UA-cam to learn more and found this video. Thankfully I didn't have to deal with any bad boards, the water temp must've just been set too high or something faulted somewhere and locked the valve up. Maybe just bought myself a few more days on this board, or maybe it'll just keep working for a while, but thank you so much for explaining all of this. Eventually got the pilot lit and the board powered back up! Landlord is also very grateful :P

Thank you for the very comprehensive explanation. It helped me clear some doubts and get to the root cause of a problem with two water heaters. Even though the video mentions that it is very rare that the control valves (solenoids) fail, I found faulty solenoids in two different heaters of the same age. One had a bad pilot solenoid and the other one the problem was on the main burner solenoid. I managed to combine the two good solenoids in one control valve body and later fixed the other two solenoids (soldering the cables that were with bad contact). In the end, I could fix both water heaters without spending a penny. My doubt was if I could test the solenoids with a battery, as they work with millivolts from the thermopile and it was cleared out by this video that uses a 9V battery to test the solenoids. I noticed that some solenoids are set by even a 1.5V Csize battery while others are only set with the 9V battery, but both work well with the millivolts from the Thermopile.

i followed all of the detailed instructions and ended up having a shot control board. ordered a new valve from Honeywell (now supplied by an off-shoot Honeywell Home brand called Resideo fwiw) off of Amazon for about $175, it arrived the next morning by 7:30, and i was able to get the control boards swapped out and my pilot-relit in about 5 minutes.

I have spent hours and hours trying to find troubleshooting information for my State water heater. Your video is so amazing and I am sending it to all my children and anyone else I can think of. Last September I spent $170 for 15 minutes of service to a couple of (young) plumbers who told me that there were no error codes, and the pilot light works just fine - lights up fine and this was information that I already knew. My husband and I were told that gusts of wind coming down the exhaust pipe (if that's what you call it) were putting out the flame. No troubleshooting was done at all. The problem continued. So periodically, I climb up into the attic and relight the water heater. It has been staying lit for a couple months at a time but now is going out weekly. My husband is getting antsy and does not trust my DIY skills. I may have to call out a plumber, but thanks to you I know more about water heaters and hope I can find a troubleshooting plumber.
Hey Terri. Yes, wind coming down the flue/exhaust pipe can cause the flame to extinguish. But, that's rarely the case re the issue you're having. Some plumbers, who are not ethical, don't want to troubleshoot the issue; they want to replace stuff that doesn't need replacing and charge you a boatload of money. Hence, that why I fix stuff myself. I learn as I go, and you can too.
Please tell your husband that Frugal DIY (me) is asking that he PLEASE stand down and let you give a go at fixing the issue. I know that you can, and I have no doubt about that. Girl, get yourself a multimeter, just like mine (Harbor Freight $6.99) and troubleshoot the issue. I'm in my 60s, and have to crawl up in the attic tomorrow to replace the belt on my whole house fan, and I'm happy to do that so I can fix it myself and save boatloads of money.
You've got this and can fix the water heater all by yourself. My guess is the thermopile is weak and giving way (here's the link to my video re how to change a thermopile: ua-cam.com/video/httzdihCxvM/v-deo.html) or, most likely, it's the control board faulty. Get to fixin' now--ya hear?

Step by step she shows how to verify each working part while isolating the faulty part(s) needing cleaned or replaced. I to had a bad control board. So, I purchased a used one on Ebay, installed it and my water heater now works perfect. I learned a lot in the process and saved $. Thank you!

Yo let me tell you. U r the best. Almost replaced the valve entirely. I did your 9v test already had replaced the thermocouple for nothing but that was cheap. Bout the valve from Amazon same one just replaced the cover n board without removing the board since connector was easy to get at. Boom came up. 3 days no hot water awful. My wife so happy. Your the only person that showed how to troubleshoot each component. Dam I’m excited lol. Thanks

You just saved me a minimum $700. I swapped out the gas-valve cover with circuit board after testing both vales per instructions. Now in new condition. Great to have my hot water back. Thanks & best wishes
This video saves another .... our heater stopped working. I couldn't keep flame going ... thought for sure it was thermopile. Tested it isolated and it was fine ... when I tested with the thermal switch I had nothing. Found there is a little black "button" on this switch like a breaker that can trip. Once reset everything started working as it should. Saved me a visit from the plumber. THANK YOU!

Outstanding video. You saved me hundreds of dollars. Your explanation is easy. I went through every step and everything was working fine. Pulled out the control board and a piece fell out. This piece was one of three "pyramid" looking metal domes. These are what make contact with the pins on the gas valve. Ordered a used one on Ebay, but is going to be 7 days to deliver. That's a lot of cold showers. I soldered this "pyramid" to its spot on the control board. Installed the soldered board and it fired right up. Thank you again. Best video on UA-cam for this issue!!!!!
