      What was the purpose of having to replace this? Was it leaking water there? We ha e a Bradford White that is dripping water from behind the box even with the water shut off. A $240 repair would be a lot better than a full $700 replacement!!!

    Can't thank you enough for posting this video. I replaced the thermopile and pilot tube but still couldn't get the pilot to stay lit. Only thing left was the valve. I was a bit reluctant to tackle that as I've never worked with gas piping but thought, 'pipe is pipe', just the contents are different. Bought a refurbished valve for $80 and with your help, had it in within a couple hours. Heater was only 12 years old and it's just my wife and I using it. She was yammering to get a new one but I saw no evidence of rust under the tank or in the water I drained so thought I'd try and save some major dollars. With your excellent guidance, I succeeded. I can't tell you the satisfaction I felt when that status light started flashing and I fired up the burner. Two months later I'm still going in the laundry room just to look at that blinking light and say, "I did it!" Thanks again!!

    My water heater pilot light will not stay lit. I know it is not the thermal overload because I've done that in the past. The plumbing company came out and said it's "probably" the gas control valve. He gave me an estimate of $1,300 to $1,500 to replace it, or over $3,000 to replace the entire water heater (which I just installed myself 7 years ago). I know my way around tools and equipment, so I found a new exact replacement gas control valve on Amazon for around $190. After watching this video, I'm very confident it's something I can do myself. Thank you for posting this. It's very informative without all the extra babbling on and on about other irrelevant things (plus, the control valve in the video looks exactly like mine). Two thumbs up!

    • @stevebusby6618
      @stevebusby6618 9 днів тому

      @@jarrettmartinez4233 I replaced the gas control valve, but it didn't solve the problem. Not only that, but the new valve quit working. After lighting the main burner once, the pilot light went out and the valve would not relight it. I ended up replacing the entire water heater myself. If you are going to replace your gas control valve, just be very careful with both of the tubes. Don't bend them too sharply or they'll kink. And the threaded connectors have to line up perfectly before they will start. Don't try to force them in or you'll strip the threads. They should be able to go in by hand for the first few threads. It took me a long time before I finally got mine started. It should be easy as long as you're patient. I just used a 1/2" x 6" pipe nipple, some open end wrenches, and some white Teflon tape for the water and yellow Teflon tape for the gas. Good luck!

      It shouldn't take that long to drain a 40 or 60 gallon tank. Now mine was draining really slowly so I took a washer hose and connected to a garden hose and the drain line on the water heater, then I opened the pressure relief valve and gave it a good 30s at full blast. Disconnected the garden hose from the faucet and then water drained from the tank in a few minutes. Just throwing that out there for anyone that may have a slow draining tank.

My original valve was showing everything was fine and the light was blinking once every three seconds like normal, but there was no pilot or burner. Replace the valve and it started right up! Only paid about $150 for the replacement gas valve. Only difference was I had to drain the water heater completely.

    Concise, straightforward, and has some very good tips.
    The part about covering the pilot tube and burner supply with a towel (plastic sheeting) - very important. Any water you get inside (especially the pilot tube) is going to cause problems with lighting and operation.
    You may want to consider flushing the tank as part of this procedure to remove sediment etc. This is important to extend the life of your tank + improve your heater's efficiency.
    Don't forget to check the condition /operation of your TPR valve and piping, too.

    Excellent, great step by step instruction. Also appreciated that portions of the video were speeded up without losing any value. Good even commentary on process. Great example of "how to" make a How To video.

    You are making very informative video, which are very organized, well explained and to the point. I have watched three videos since yesterday; all them has a flow, well connected message; and easy to understand message which can be applied to our water heater issues. Thank you for your contributions. You can open an online virtual trade school on you tube or private website with recorded videos. You can also provide virtual visual consultation for a fee. Obviously, you need to have a disclaimer and electronically signed consent. Thank you again.

    Pro Tip: The threading on the connection to a liquid propane fed water tank is reversed. LP=Righty loosey, lefty tightie.
    We learned this the hard way by assuming the connection was stuck. The plumber just had to turn the connection the right way and install the device. Ten minutes total. Yeah, it hurts that we got soooo close to completing this repair on our own. But we still saved money by buying the part ourselves and time/money by having it mostly prepped for the plumber.
    So, great video.
    Note: Talking to friends it appears that not knowing or remembering that propane connections are reversed is something just about all of them have experienced once or twice. That takes the sting out of it...a little.
